The UNLV Lady Rebels are in the postseason for the second straight year as they will open play in the 2018 Postseason WNIT Thursday night when they face former Mountain West conference rival Utah in Salt Lake City. This is UNLV s fifth straight first round road game in the WNIT, and the Lady Rebels are also looking for their 20th win of the season, which would give them back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since and UNLV and Utah were founding members of the Mountain West, and have met twice since the Utes left the league, with a home-andhome series in and Both games were won by Utah. The Lady Rebels earned their spot in this year s 64-team event thanks to claiming the Mountain West regular season championship, the first in school history for the team. That gave UNLV the league s auto-bid to the WNIT, while Utah was an at-large bid after finishing on the season, though 8-10 in the Pac-12. The Utes have lost their last three games, though the team has dealt with injuries to two of their top three scorers, their status for Thursday s game is TBD. The winner of Thursday s contest will take on the winner of the first-round matchup between Saint Louis and Kansas State. 4 LADY REBEL BASKETBALL HEAD COACH KATHY OLIVIER When UNLV was searching for its next women s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation s best -- it didn t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women s basketball history on April 22, The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals as the sevenseed. Olivier s first recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, would 10 months later became the firstever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier s best season would come in , as UNLV finished the campaign with a record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixthbest in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the first time since with a trip to the WNIT. Her most recent squad also recorded a 22- win season (22-11) while receiving an at-large bid to the WNIT. Highlights of the campaign included wins over the SEC (Ole Miss) and the Pac-12 (USC), as well as an 8-1 start to the year and a school-record 12 MW victories (12-6 record). Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac- 10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. The Lady Rebels have reached the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since a six-year stretch from UNLV is making its 19th all-time postseason appearance UNLV claimed a school-record 14 Mountain West conference victories UNLV has seven road victories for the second straight year (7-4) UNLV s 9-2 start to conference play was its best since going 11-1 in the Big West in UNLV won four straight MW road games for the first time in program history In December, UNLV played five straight games against teams currently in the RPI top-50 - vs Buffalo (19), at Gonzaga (36), at Stanford (13), Mississippi State (3) and Syracuse (35) UNLV swept a school-record five MW conference opponents - (Air Force, New Mexico, San Jose State, San Diego State, Utah State) PLAYERS TO WATCH... The Lady Rebels bring back one of the most experienced lineups in the Mountain West, and it all begins with senior Brooke Johnson and junior Nikki Wheatley who will be the starting backcourt for the third straight season (Wheatley received a medical redshirt last season after a knee injury in the 10th game of the year). Johnson currently ranks sixth in the league in scoring with 16.1 points per game while also counting herself among the conference s leaders in assists (sixth per game) and steals (third spg), and leads the MW in minutes per game at 36.9 mpg. Wheatley meanwhile is seventh in the conference in rebounding with 6.5 per contest, and adds 13.8 points per game (11th) and 3.4 assists per contest (ninth). She s also fourth in steals with 1.8 per game. Making a big jump in her second year with the Lady Rebels is junior center Katie Powell, as she is nearly averaging a double-double with 15.6 points (seventh) and 8.7 rebounds (second) per contest. LAST TIME OUT... A short bench and poor free throw shooting was the difference for UNLV on March 6, as the second-seeded Lady Rebels were upset by seventh-seed UNR in the quarterfinals of the 2018 MW Women s Basketball Championships at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV never trailed in regulation, and opened up a nine-point halftime advantage. It was sixpoint lead after three quarters, until the Lady Rebels opened up the fourth with six straight points for a lead. UNR scored 10 of the next 14 points, to knot the game at 59-59, and again at with 42 seconds left. Both teams missed their next shot sending the game to OT. In the first overtime, UNR grabbed a lead with 1:21 to play, but Brooke Johnson scored five straight to tie the game again at 68-68, leading to a second overtime. After UNLV scored first in the second overtime, UNR had seven of the next eight points, while UNLV missed three of four at the line. That led to a advantage. Johnson scored to cut the edge to two, and UNLV got the ball back with 21 seconds to play but Johnson s jumper in the paint was off, while UNR made two-of-two at the line to seal the win. UNLV was 10-of-19 at the free throw line for 52.6%, while UNR was 20-of-22 for 90.9%. The Lady Rebels were also outrebounded by a margin. LADY REBEL NOTES: * Five player scored in double figures for UNLV - Johnson (19), Nikki Wheatley (18), Paris Strawther (14), Katie Powell (11) and Jordyn Bell (10) * UNLV s bench was outscored 16-1 in the game. MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS... UNLV had a league-high three players earn all-conference honors, while senior Brooke Johnson was named MW Defensive Player of the Year, the first from UNLV since Johnson was also selected to both the All-Conference and MW All-Defensive Team, as was junior Katie Powell. Junior Nikki Wheatley was an Honorable Mention selection.

LADY REBELS SET HISTORY WITH 1ST-EVER MW TITLE... UNLV claimed its first-ever Mountain West championship when it defeated Utah State on March 2 to finish in a tie for first place in the regular season standings at 14-4 overall (along with Boise State). It s also the first conference title of any kind for the Lady Rebels since winning the Big West Tournament. The last regular season conference title came in when UNLV shared the crowd with Long Beach State with 15-3 records. NEW MW MARK FOR TOTAL VICTORIES... With its win Friday against Utah State, UNLV recorded its 14th Mountain West victory of the season. That is a new school record, topping the mark of 12 set a year ago (12-6). Its also the most conference wins for the Lady Rebels since going 14-4 in the Big West in SCHOOL RECORD-EFFORT AGAINST THE AGGIES... UNLV set a school record on March 2 against Utah State by hitting a perfect 17-of-17 at the free throw line for 100%. Surprisingly, that just barely beats UNLV s performance the first time this season against the Aggies, as the Lady Rebels shot what was then the third-best percentage in team history, knocking down 22-of-23 for 95.7% on Jan. 6. That gives UNLV a combined for 97.5% for the season against Utah State. STREAK STOPPERS... Perhaps the most impressive part of the Lady Rebels 7-4 road record this season is the number of double-digit home win streaks UNLV snapped this season. It began with UNLV s victory at Gonzaga on Dec. 9, which stopped the Bulldogs 10-game home win streak. The Lady Rebels followed that with their victory at New Mexico on Jan. 17, 2018, stopping the Lobos 13-game home win streak, which ranked as the ninth-longest active in the nation at that point. UNLV claimed a third streak as its victim on Feb. 21, as its win at Fresno State snapped its 10-game home win streak, which was the nation s 10th-longest active. THREE AND COUNTING FOR POWELL... Junior center Katie Powell collected her third Mountain West Player of the Week honors on Feb. 26 after again leading UNLV in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg) during a 2-0 week. More impressively, the wins came over teams that had been a combined when they faced the Lady Rebels. She began the week with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) in a road win at Fresno State and followed with 20 points, seven rebounds in a home win over New Mexico. She also shot 52% from the field. HOT-SHOOTING LADY REBELS... UNLV was on first to start the game against Boise State in its win on Feb. 3, shooting 66.7% in both the first and second quarters. The Lady Rebels finished the game with a final field goal percentage of 56.9% (29-of-51), the highest for the team since shooting 63.5% against Arizona on Nov. 13, MORE WEEKLY HONORS FOR POWELL... Junior center Katie Powell became the first Lady Rebel to be named Mountain West Player of the Week twice in the same since Danielle Miller in the season, after picking up her second award in three weeks on Feb. 5. Powell earned the award after averaging 24.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while leading UNLV to a 2-0 week against San Jose State and Boise State. She posted a career-high 28 points against SJSU, and recorded a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds in the big win over the Broncos, while adding a career-high five steals.

For most teams, a rally from 18 points to win would be one of the best comebacks in team history if not the school record. For UNLV, who already owns two of the top comebacks in NCAA history, the Lady Rebels rally from down in the first half against SDSU comes in as just the secondbest comeback of the season. First of course was the 21-point comeback in the final six minutes in UNLV s overtime over Portland State in the season opener. UNLV has made a habit of rallying from big first half deficits in conference play this season. The win at SDSU marked the third time the Lady Rebels have trailed by double-digits in a game and rallied for a win, and all three games were on the road. Utah State held a 10-point second quarter edge on Jan. 6, before UNLV pulled out the victory, while the Lady Rebels were down 20-6 at New Mexico on Jan. 17, before the eventual victory. ROAD CROWDS NO PROBLEM FOR THE LADY REBELS... Perhaps the most impressive part of UNLV s 5-2 record on the road this year is how the team has played in front of the biggest hostile crowds the Lady Rebels have faced this season. UNLV has played three road games this year with announced crowds of larger then 4,500, and have won all three. Even more impressive, two of the wins came over top-75 RPI teams, with the win at New Mexico in front of 5,786 fans, and December s non-conference win at Gonzaga in front of 5,378 fans. On Jan. 27, UNLV knocked off San Diego State in front of 4,568 fans. POWELL MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Katie Powell became the first Lady Rebel to earn weekly honors this season, as she was named Mountain West Player of the Week after leading UNLV to a 2-0 week with victories over New Mexico and Colorado State. Powell scored 18 points in both contests, the first of which was a victory that broke New Mexico s 13-game home win streak. She then scored eight points in the deciding fourth quarter in UNLV s win over Colorado State, including four straight to rally UNLV from three down to take the lead for good at on the way to a victory. NEW COURT FOR THE LADY REBELS... The Lady Rebels are playing on a brand new court for the first time in the Cox Pavilion, as the athletic department debuted its new floor and new design tying into Las Vegas during UNLV s victory over Colorado State on Jan. 20. The new floor replaced the previous Cox Pavilion floor that had originally been used in the Thomas & Mack Center before moving to the Cox in 2001, and was several decades old. The new design incorporates the world-famous Las Vegas Strip skyline as well as the Las Vegas Sign. Kemmer was originally a member of the UNLV softball squad, and in her freshman season for the team she played both right field and pitcher, and finished third on the team with a.327 batting average while recording 33 hits, 17 runs and 12 RBI. Kemmer played guard at Valley Christian HS in Phoenix, and helped her team to a state championship runner-up finish in 2014 while averaging 12.8 points, 4.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. UNLV CONTINUES SUCCESS AT THE PIT... With its victory at New Mexico on Wednesday, the Lady Rebels claimed their eighth win on the Lobos home court in Mountain West play. That s the most wins of any current league school in the Pit over the Lobos since the first year of the conference ( ). Even more impressive is the Lady Rebels recent success in Albuquerque, as UNLV has won six of its last eight games in the Pit, including the past two. That includes a four-game win streak from , the only such four-game win streak on the road over the Lobos in MW history. Head coach Kathy Olivier meanwhile is the only active coach in the Mountain West with a winning record at The Pitt, as she is 6-4 all-time with the Lady Rebels in Albuquerque. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS FOR WHEATLEY... Nikki Wheatley picked up her second all-tournament honors of the season when she was selected to the ASU All-Classic team after posting 13.5 points and six rebounds over the Lady Rebels two games. JOHNSON, WHEATLEY PICK UP ROUND-UP HONORS... Both Nikki Wheatley and Brooke Johnson were named to the Lady Rebel Round-Up All- Tournament team after leading UNLV to a win over Hofstra and a seven-point loss to Minnesota. Johnson averaged 17.5 points per game over the weekend, while Wheatley posted a doubledouble average of 13 points and 12 rebounds. BROWN LOST FOR THE SEASON... Freshman Kavionnia Brown suffered an ACL injury prior to the Lady Rebel Round-Up, and will be out for the rest of the season. The Albuquerque, N.M. native appeared in three games with one start for UNLV, and dished out six assists while collecting two steals and two points. She played a key role in the Lady Rebels big fourth-quarter rally against Portland State (Nov. 10). 4TH-QUARTER COMEBACK ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK... UNLV has made the NCAA record books in the past for owning two of the largest comebacks in women s college basketball history, but the Lady Rebels outdid themselves in their season opener night. Down by 21 with just 5:27 left in the game, 72-51, UNLV rallied to claim an overtime victory over Portland State on Nov. 10 at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV would use a 19-0 run to make it a one-possesion game, and Brooke Johnson nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to complete a 22-1 run to end the fourth quarter and force overtime. Including the extra period, the Lady Rebs outscored Portland State 37-8 over the final 10 minutes. UNLV s previous top comebacks including a win over George Washington on Nov. 30, 2007, after trailing by (25) with 18:20 left in the second half, and a win over Air Force on Feb. 20, 2009 after trailing (22) with 9:51 left in the second half.

One year after undertaking the toughest schedule ever under head coach Kathy Olivier, UNLV managed to top that with this year s non-conference slate. For the first time in school history, the Lady Rebels will face two defending Final Four teams from a year ago, and in fact, will play them in back-to-back contests. That s all part of a five-game stretch against teams that played in last year s NCAA Tournament. It starts off with road contests at Gonzaga (NCAA 1st Round) and at Stanford (Final Four) on consecutive weekends. The Lady Rebels then return home for a pair of games in the Duel In The Desert, where they will face national championship runner-up Mississippi State and Syracuse (2nd round), who played in the 2016 NCAA title game.
