The Seahawks carry a two-game losing streak to Boston after suffering back-to-back home losses to Charleston Southern and Hofstra. Northeastern, meanwhile, dropped a count at George Mason on Thursday night in Fairfax. 3 Head Coach Buzz Peterson Robert Buzz Peterson brings an extensive background to UNCW, leading four different teams to fi ve post-season tournament appearances during his impressive career. Peterson led Appalachian State to the semifi nals of the 2010 CollegeInsider.com Tournament, guiding the Mountaineers to a overall record and the SoCon North Division title last year. He stands (.605) in 12 seasons as a head coach. Peterson, 46, left the college game in 2007 to become Director of Player Personnel for the National Basketball Association s Charlotte Bobcats, but returned last fall to ASU, where he began his career at Appalachian in In his fi rst stint in Boone, Peterson led the BUZZ PETERSON S YEAR-BY-YEAR COACHING RECORD Institution Season Overall Pct. His.669 overall winning percentage and.797 winning percentage are both tops among ASU coaches in the program s history. Peterson was named SoCon Coach-of-the- Year in 1998 and 2000 and led ASU to three 20-win campaigns. Following the campaign, Peterson took over at Tulsa, where he led the Golden Hurricane to a record and the 2001 National Invitation Tournament championship. Tulsa defeated Memphis, 72-64, in the semifi nals at Madison Square Garden and then cruised past Alabama, 79-60, in the title game. Peterson s success at ASU and Tulsa landed him the Tennessee job in and he spent four seasons in Knoxville. He compiled a record with the Volunteers, collecting two NIT berths. In , Peterson moved on to Coastal Carolina and piloted the Chanticleers to a mark in two seasons. CCU registered its fi rst 20-win season in 13 years in when the Chants went before losing to Winthrop in the Big South Conference championship game. Peterson then joined the Bobcats and worked closely with Head Coach Larry Brown as the organization s top talent evaluator for the 2009 NBA Draft. Before his fi rst stint at ASU, Peterson spent nine seasons as an assistant coach, with stints at Appalachian State ( ), East Tennessee State ( ), N.C. State ( ) and Vanderbilt ( ). The teams that he served as an assistant coach for racked up four post-season appearances, including two NCAA berths and two NIT bids, and went a combined Before entering the coaching ranks, Peterson enjoyed an outstanding playing career at UNC Chapel Hill. He played four seasons for legendary head coach Dean Smith from and helped lead the Tar Heels to a record and four Atlantic Coast Conference championships. He was member of the 1982 national championship team, where he teamed with future NBA stars Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins. As a player in high school, Peterson was a Parade and McDonald s All-American at Asheville High School in Asheville, N.C. 5 Memorable Moments In The UNCW-NU Series Junior guard T.J. Carter drained an 8-footer as time expired to lift UNCW over Northeastern, 46-44, in the fi rst meeting between the two schools on Jan. 28, 2006, at Trask Coliseum. Carter recorded his fi rst career double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Seahawks, who shot just 28.4 percent. UNCW relied on its defense, holding Jose Juan Barea, the league s leading scorer, to a career-low fi ve points on 2-of-12 shooting, including 0-of-8 behind the 3-point arc. The Seahawks also forced 19 turnovers. Senior forward Beckham Wyrick scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to lift UNCW over No. 5-seeded Northeastern, 69-54, on Mar. 5, 2006, in the semifi nals of the CAA Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. Wyrick led four players in double fi gures as the Seahawks built a halftime lead and coasted down the stretch. UNCW held NU to 26.9 percent shooting in the second half. Senior guard John Goldsberry matched his career high with 10 assists and held NU star guard Jose Juan Barea without a fi eld goal in the second half. Northeastern held the visiting Seahawks to just 32.8 percent shooting in their fi rst visit to Matthews Arena as the Huskies carved out a win in the historic facility. Senior guard Adrian Martinez and senior forward Bennet Davis scored 12 points apiece and senior guard Bobby Kelly chipped in 11 for the Huskies, who forced 18 turnovers and committed just seven miscues. Senior guards Daniel Fountain and T.J. 7 SETTING THE SCENE UNCW wraps up the regular season today when the Seahawks take on Northeastern at historic Matthews Arena. The Seahawks are still looking for their fi rst win in Boston since NU joined the CAA in THE CAA STANDINGS The Seahawks, at 7-10 in the league, are in eighth place in the CAA standings. Northeastern sits in 10th place in the 12-team league at THE FINALES UNCW stands in regular season fi nales since records are available ( ). The Seahawks are 18-7 at home and 7-15 on the road in the fi nal game of the regular season through the years. UNCW has lost its last three regular season fi nales and last won with a verdict over Delaware on Feb. 24, LAST GAME Hofstra s guard tandem of Charles Jenkins and Mike Moore scored 22 and 20 points to power the Pride past UNCW, 71-64, in the regular season home fi nale for the Seahawks on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.
