Gasser then started game two vs. North Dakota, becoming just the third UW freshman to start a game under Bo Ryan, joining Devin Harris in and Alando Tucker in FROM WALK-ON TO STARTER: Senior Wquinton Smith made his first career start vs. Prairie View A&M, setting career highs with 17 minutes, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Before Smith, the last non-scholarship player to start a game for Wisconsin was Kevin Gullikson at Iowa on Jan. 21, The last four-year nonscholarship player to start for the Badgers was David Burkemper vs. Michigan on Feb. 27, OPENING SUCCESS Wisconsin is now all-time in season openers, including in season-openers at home. ON THE ROAD IN NON-CONFERENCE Over the last four seasons, the Badgers are 5-3 in non-conference road games, including wins at Georgia, Marquette, Texas and Virginia Tech. Under Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is exactly in true road contests, including a 5-5 mark last season. WELCOME BACK Wisconsin returns three starters from a year ago junior guard Jordan Taylor and senior forwards Jon Leuer and Keaton Nankivil. UW also brings back reserve senior guard/forward Tim Jarmusz, who started the first 27 games last season. Wisconsin boasts one of the most experienced rosters in the Big Ten. UW features six seniors, including a pair of fifth-year seniors. The Badgers return 12 letterwinners overall, and on average the UW players enter the season with 2.82 years of experience. Both of those numbers trail only Northwestern among conference teams. The Wildcats return 13 letterwinners and average 2.85 years of experience. The Badgers return 59.8 percent of their scoring, 74.7 percent of their rebounding and 61.9 percent of their assists from last season. Overall, the Badgers will be looking to replace 34.5 percent of the minutes played in Wisconsin s roster will feature the leading scorer (Leuer ppg), leading rebounder (Keaton Nankivil rpg in Big Ten play) and assist producer (Taylor apg) from last year s team. FRONTCOURT FOUNDATION Last season Wisconsin was led by senior guards Jason Bohannon and Trevon Hughes. This year, a senior duo in the frontcourt takes the lead role. The senior duo of Leuer and Nankivil has appeared in a combined 176 games, making 91 career starts. The combo averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in LOOKING BACK AT The Badgers made their 12th-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. UW is one of just six schools with an active NCAA tournament streak of at least 12 years, joining: Kansas (20), Duke (14), Michigan State, (12), Gonzaga (11) and Texas (11). The Badgers won 24 games in , tying the team for the fifth-winningest season in school history. Ryan-led teams own each of the top six spots in the UW record book for singleseason wins. Since Bo Ryan took over in 2001, Wisconsin has posted a (.713) Big Ten record, tops in the conference. Over the last four seasons, UW also owns the best Big Ten mark at (.743). Purdue (49-21), OSU (49-21) and MSU (49-21) are all tied for the next-best records over that span. Wisconsin defeated three teams ranked in the AP top 10 last season (No. 5 Michigan State, No. 6 Duke and No. 4 Purdue). That is the fourth time in school history UW has defeated three top-10 foes in a season (also accomplished in , and ). Over the past eight seasons, nobody has played defense like the Badgers. Wisconsin has ranked in the Big Ten s top three in scoring defense in seven of those seasons and finished among the nation s top 10 five times. Last season, the Badgers once again led the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing only 56.9 points per game. That number ranked fourth in the nation. 7 The Bo Ryan Years Ryan has taken UW to new heights Bo Ryan is the 56th NCAA coach to reach the 600-win plateau and is one of just nine active Division I coaches to reach that hallowed ground. Ryan s career winning percentage of.765 is second only to North Carolina s Roy Williams among active coaches with 600 wins. Among all-time coaches with 500 career wins (regardless of NCAA classification), Ryan s winning percentage ranks 10th. With a win over Penn State (Jan. 24, 2010), Ryan tied legendary Indiana coach Branch McCracken as the second-fastest coach in conference history to record 100 Big Ten wins, doing so in 140 games. Only Bob Knight did it faster (131 games). Ryan s.713 (107-43) winning percentage in conference games is the best of any Big Ten coach in history, surpassing Bob Knight ( ,.700). Ryan reached both 100 and 200 wins at UW faster than any coach in school history besides Basketball Hall of Famer Walter Meanwell. With a win over Marquette last season, Ryan became just the third coach to win 200 games at Wisconsin. Ryan s 217 wins rank third in UW annals behind Basketball Hall of Famers Harold Bud Foster and Walter Doc Meanwell. Coach Record 1. Ryan has led Wisconsin to a (.713) record in Big Ten play. That is the highest winning percentage of any coach in Big Ten history. Ryan is the fastest coach in UW history to reach 100 Big Ten wins, doing so in 140 games. That also ties Branch McCracken as the second-fastest in conference history to reach 100 Big Ten wins. Only Bob Knight (131) did it faster. UW has finished among the top four in the Big Ten in each of Ryan s nine seasons. That nine-year stretch of top-four finishes is the best in UW history, passing the previous record of seven seasons from NCAA Tournament Record UW pre-bo Ryan: 7 appearances / 9-6 UW with Bo Ryan: 9 appearances / 12-9 Wisconsin made seven appearances in the NCAA tournament in the 103 seasons before Bo Ryan took over as head coach.
