It's the seventh time overall and second straight year the teams have played. The Cougars lead the series, 4-2, including last year's on Nov. 18. PVAMU last defeated Houston at home on Nov. 28, LAST TIME OUT The Panthers lost Sunday at #16 Wisconsin, Houston dropped its first contest of the season Tuesday at LSU, FORMER COUGAR STANDOUTS SMITH, DANIELS LEADS PANTHERS After serving as Interim Head Coach over the final 12 games of the season in leading Prairie View A&M to a 6-6 record, Byron Smith was officially named head coach on April 12, Smith was a two-time All-Southwest Conference player for the Cougars in and , scoring over 1,000 points and averaging 16.9 points per game while playing for Head Coach Pat Foster. He also served as Director of Basketball Operations at UH under Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler from (full bio page 3) Assistant coach Derrick Daniels is in his first year on the Panthers' coaching staff, and was a four-year starter from , and led the old Southwest Conference in assists as a junior. SENIOR SPARK Senior forward Zachary Hamilton has been a big spark for the Panthers, first off the bench, and now in the past four games as a starter. He's averaging 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals, shooting 48 percent from the field, and 44 percent from 3-point range. He scored a season-high 29 points in last Friday's game against Lamar, including a career-high seven three-pointers. This season, Hamilton leads the Panthers and is eighth in the SWAC in scoring (14.0 ppg), 13th in field goal percentage (46.1%), fifth in 3-point FG shooting (41.7%), and sixth in 3s made per game (2.1), while also averaging 2.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He has and has posted six straight double-digit scoring games. NEWCOMERS AMONG LEADERS IN SCORING A pair of first-year Panthers have emerged as top scorers early in the season. UNLV transfer Daquan Cook is averaging 12.3 points (14th/SWAC), 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals (tied 6th/SWAC). The senior tied a season-high with 17 points vs. Jarvis Christian on Nov. 22 to go along with season highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (six). Junior L.J. Westbrook (Casper College) has joined Cook in double-figure scoring in five of seven games this season, and is averaging 10.1 points and 3.3 rebounds, shooting 49 percent from the field (8th/SWAC), 36.8 percent from the three-point line (12th/SWAC), and 76.2 percent from the free-throw line (10th/SWAC). He scored a season-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds in the win over Fresno State and scored 11 with three rebounds and four assists vs. Jarvis Christian. SETTING THE PACE Senior guard Ja'Donta Blakley is scoring 6.4 points per game with 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game (4th/SWAC). He tied a season-high with 11 points and added five rebounds and five assists in the win over Jarvis Christian. Blakley had a season-high eight assists in the win at Fresno State, and corralled a season-high seven rebounds at UTSA. He had eight points, five rebounds and four assists Sunday at Wisconsin. BLOCK PARTY J.D. Wallace was an enforcer for Prairie View A&M off the bench in the win over Jarvis Christian. Wallace had season highs in points (eight), rebounds (six) and blocked shots (five) for the Panthers. He is averaging 3.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and leads the SWAC with 2.1 blocks per game. PICKED TO FINISH 6th IN SWAC The Panthers were picked to finish 6th in the 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference standings, in voting done by the league's head coaches and sports information contacts. CHAMP SLAYERS HC Byron Smith appears to have a knack for taking down defending conference champions and NCAA Tournament teams for his first wins of the season. This past February, the Panthers beat defending SWAC Champion and arch-rival Texas Southern to earn Smith's first win as interim head coach. On November 14, the Smith-led Panthers beat defending WCC champ Fresno State for the first win of the season. 4 Byron Smith became the sixth head coach in PVAMU NCAA Division I history and the 10th head coach since the campaign on April 12, Prior to accepting the role of head coach, Smith spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at PVAMU. He was named interim head coach the final three months of the season. Elevated to the role of interim head coach in January of 2016, the Panthers quickly made the transition to Smith's style as they defeated conference rival and defending SWAC Champion Texas Southern for his first career win on Feb. 6. One week later, the Panthers defeated Grambling State for their first winning streak of the season and began a second half run which saw PVAMU close out the regular season with wins in four of the last six games. During PVAMU's late run, the Panthers defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff for their first win in Pine Bluff, Ark. since 2005 and also defeated Southern University on their home court for the first time since Under Smith, senior guard Jayrn Johnson flourished as he averaged 20.5 points over the final 11 games of the season. Johnson finished as PVAMU's scoring leader and was the team's top threepoint shooter in addition to being named SWAC Player of the Week on two occasions in the month of February. During the campaign, Smith played a pivotal role in helping senior center Reggis Onwukamuche ascend to the top of the SWAC amongst post players as Onwukamuche was named the SWAC's Defensive Player of the Year while also Head Coach Byron Smith earning a spot on the All-SWAC Second Team. Onwukamuche finished the regular season with 57 blocked shots (1.7 per game), ranked 10th in the SWAC with 5.3 rebounds and second with 2.4 offensive rebounds per game. As a result of his play, Onwukamuche received an opportunity to play professionally as he inked a contract with the Sheffield Sharks of the British Basketball League. In addition to Onwukamuche's play, junior post Karim York saw his role expand as he averaged a careerhigh 9.1 points per game along with 5.1 rebounds. York tripled his scoring average in and averaged nearly four times more rebounds than the previous season with the Panthers. In his first season at Prairie View A&M, Smith helped the Panthers make history as they advanced to the championship round of the 2014 SWAC Tournament for the second consecutive season. Smith primarily worked with the team's post players and helped forward Demondre Chapman achieve career highs in scoring in rebounding. Smith has experience in all levels of basketball across the globe. Prior to Prairie View A&M, Smith was an entrepreneur as he ran a business which consisted of him coaching high performance skills and fundamentals programs in the Houston area. Collegiately, Smith spent one season ( ) at Texas Southern and helped the Tigers advance to the championship round of the SWAC Tournament for the first time since Before coming to TSU, Smith served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M and helped lead the Aggies to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in addition to securing a pair of nationally ranked recruiting classes. Smith also served as the head coach of the highly-successful Houston Swoosh AAU program for three seasons. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Harlem Globetrotters in In , he served as an assistant coach at McClennan Community College in Waco, helping the team to the regional finals. In , he was the interim head coach at Texas Southern. Smith was the director of basketball operations at his alma mater, the University of Houston, under Clyde Drexler from Smith was a standout player at UH from , twice earning All-Southwest Conference honors under Coach Pat Foster. He was a 1,000-point scorer in two seasons (1,051), averaging just under 17 points per game. Prior to that, he was an all-conference player at Tyler Junior College in and played at Northwestern State in A native of Bossier City, La., Smith earned all-state honors as a senior at Airline High School after leading the state in scoring with a 30.6 average. After graduating from UH in 1991, Smith played professional basketball overseas for six seasons, including four years in Australia. He also played in Turkey and Greece. Smith and his wife, Melanie, has two children, Christopher and Kayla.

5 Panther Legend Beaty Enters Pro Basketball Hall of Fame Prairie View A&M University basketball legend Zelmo Beaty was officially inducted posthumously into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 in Springfield, Mass. The journey to the sports' highest honor was long but now complete for the Panther legend, who averaged 25 points and 20 rebounds on The Hill from , leading Prairie View A&M to the 1962 NAIA Championship while earning MVP honors. Beaty joins Willis Reed of Grambling as the only SWAC players in the Pro Basketball of Fame. The 6-foot-9 center was the third overall pick in the 1962 draft by the then St. Louis Hawks of the American Basketball Association. He played 13 seasons for the Hawks, both in St. Louis and Atlanta, along with the Utah Stars and Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged a doubledouble for his career with 16 points and more than 10 rebounds per game. Beaty, who was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, scored more than 15,000 points and grabbed more than 9,600 rebounds during his pro basketball career. He was a five-time All-Star, and earned playoff MVP honors in leading the Stars to the 1971 ABA Championship. Beaty took his place in the Hall with fellow centers Shaquille O'Neal, Yao Ming, along with other greats Allen Iverson, Sheryl Swoopes, coaches John McClendon (posthumously) and Tom Izzo, referee Darrell Garretson, multisport player Cumberland Posey, and contributor Jerry Reinsdorf.
