The Aggies are 7-22 all-time at the Big Dance with all seven of their wins coming from The last NM State win in the tournament came against St. Bonaventure in the NCAA Consolation game, 79-73, during its Final Four run in *Note: NM State had to vacate wins from , including a 3-3 mark in the NCAA Tournament during those years. If counted, it would NM State s 24th NCAA Tournament appearance with a all-time record with its last tournament victory coming against Nebraska (97-79) in NM State has now made an NCAA Tournament appearance in seven of the last nine years. This will be New Mexico State s first time playing an NCAA Tournament game in San Diego. In the last 10 losses for NM State in the Big Dance, two have come by single digits. Those two single-digit losses came against No. 13 San Diego State (73-69 OT) in 2014 and No. 12 Michigan State in 2010, AGAINST ALL ODDS Heading into Friday s contest, the 12th-seed has gone all-time since 1979 and have won at least one tournament in 15 of the last 17 years. When looking at the opening game of the tournament, 12-seeds are all-time while three of the last six 12/5 upsets have come in overtime. Heading into this year s tournament, here s a list of 12-seeds that got the upper-hand against their opponents 2017: Middle Tennessee > Minnesota : UALR > Purdue (OT2) 2016: Yale > Baylor : None 2014: Harvard > Cincinnati : North Dakota State > Oklahoma (OT) 2014: Stephen F. Austin > VCU (OT) WACTION IN THE BIG DANCE With the current makeup of the Western Athletic Conference, only three different teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in NM State (24), Seattle U (11) and CSU Bakersfield (2016) while the Aggies and Runners are the only teams to have advanced to the tournament as a member of the WAC. When the Aggies take the court on Friday, it ll be the 93rd time a WAC team has played in the NCAA Tournament. The WAC is all-time in the tournament. Here s how WAC teams have been seeded the last 10 years 2018: NM State 12 seed 2017: NM State 14 seed 2016: CSU Bakersfield 15 seed 2015: NM State - 15 seed 2014: NM State - 13 seed 2013: NM State - 13 seed 2012: NM State - 13 seed 2011: Utah State - 12 seed 2010: NM State - 12 seed Utah State (at-large) 12 seed 2009: Utah State - 11 seed Technically speaking, NM State is 2-2 all-time when playing as the 12-seed. However, three of those four games occurred during the season that was vacated by the NCAA. Thus, leaving NM State 0-1 as the 12-seed back in 2010 against Michigan State a affair in favor of the Spartans in Spokane, Wash., thanks to a lane Game 34 - #20/18 Clemson WAC Standings (Thru games on 3/10) (RPI thru games on 3/11) Rk. The redshirt junior was critical to Clemson s defensive success that led to 11-straight wins. With big man Donte Grantham out for the season 19 games into the season, Gabe DeVoe is second on the squad with 13.2 points per game. Like Reed, DeVoe earned all-conference accolades as well, taking home All- ACC Honorable Mention while big man Elijah Thomas was named to the All-ACC Defensive Team. FAMILY AFFAIR When New Mexico State clinched the WAC Tournament title on Saturday, March 10, Shunn Buchanan (WAC Tournament Champion) joined his brother Leroy Shaq Buchanan (OVC Tournament Champion) as the only other set of brothers play in the NCAA Tournament. Because the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament was the week before the WAC s, their parents were able to watch both sons punch their ticket to the Big Dance. As luck would have it, both New Mexico State and Murray State will be playing in the San Diego pod for the first and second round of the tournament both as 12-seeds. The other brother duo playing in the NCAA Tournament is College of Charleston s Osinachi Smart (CAA NM State Men s Basketball Game Notes

Other than the three the Aggies have on since the season, the last time NM State won a regularseason title outright was when it won the Big West Conference back-to-back years from With the win, Chris Jans became the only first-year head coach in program history to win a regular-season conference title outright. Former Aggie head coach Marvin Menzies shared the WAC regular-season title his first year at the helm. TITLETOWN USA When zeroes came across the board last Saturday at Orleans Arena, the Aggies of New Mexico State wrapped up their 10th WAC Tournament Championship appearance since joining the conference in the season with a vicgtory over Grand Canyon. Jones is also 15 short of passing Hamidu Rahman (737, ) for eighth on the all-time rebounding list at New Mexico State. HISTORY IN THE MAKING On top of immortalizing himself in the Aggie basketball history books on Saturday, Feb. 10, senior Jemerrio Jones may have immortalized himself in the NCAA record books as well. At the end of the game, the 6-5 forward finished with a line of 27 points and 20 rebounds. That was his third-straight game with 20 rebounds. The back-to-back-to-back 20-rebound games by Jones made him the only player this century to do such while ESPN Stats & Info and Stats Inc. have confirmed he s the only player to do so since their database began in Jones also joins elite company in the NM State history books, becoming just the third player to have three games with 20 rebounds or more in a single-season. Sam Lacey did it twice in his career during the (3) and (5) seasons and while Billy Joe Price did it during the (3) season. With his 22 rebounds on March 9 against Seatlle U in the WAC Tournament semifinal game, Jones now joins Lacey as the only other players in Aggie history to have five games of 20-plus rebounds in a single season. PROECT THIS HOUSE After the final home contest on Feb. 24, New Mexico State wrapped up the campaign with a dominant 95-8 (.922) record on Lou Henson Court dating back to the season. Since that season, NM State has lost no more than two games at home in any season. ACTIVE LEADERS Through March 12, Jemerrio Jones is ranked seventh amongst active Division I players with a 10.8 career rebounding average and is also ranked 17th when ranked across Divisions I, II and III. Meanwhile, teammate Zach Lofton s 18.2 career scoring average ranks him 18th amongst Division I players and 72nd among active players in Division I, II and III. RPI CHECK Through March 11, New Mexico State holds the highest RPI number amongst conference teams checking in at 35. Utah Valley, who opened the season at Kentucky and Duke back-to-back days, is the next closest WAC team at 83 while Grand Canyon and Seattle U checks in at 156 and 166, respectively. Meanwhile, the rest of the league is in the 200-range. Jemerrio Jones is not only the league leader in rebounding at 13.2 boards per game, but is also second nationally. Lofton s 83 triples on the year is good for second-best in the league while his.382 clip from deep is also svent-best in the WAC. Tip-off time and network are to be determined. TOP OF HIS CLASS Through games on March 12, head coach Chris Jans 28-5 overall mark and his.848 winning-percentage is best among first-year head coaches and first-year head coaches at a new school. Chris Holtman of Ohio State is 24-8 on the year, but holds a win-percentage of.750. WAC DOMINANCE CONTINUES After a successful regular-season campaign, New Mexico State head coach Chris Jans was named the Western Athletic Conference Don Haskins Coach of the Year while senior Jemerrio Jones was named the WAC Player of the Year. Jans is the first WAC men s head coach since Nevada s Mark Fox ( ) to win coach of the year honors in his first year at the helm. The Aggies posted a 25-5 overall mark in the regular-season and 12-2 record in conference play under his direction. The 12-2 record in the WAC gave NM Sate its third regular-season title in four years outright and is the second-best record in conference play since joining the WAC. In addition, Jans guided the Aggies to their first win over an AP top-10 ranked opponent since 1990 when NM State defeated then-no. 6/7 Miami in the semifinal game of the 2017 Hawaii Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Jones player of the year honor makes it three-straight for New Mexico State. It is also the fourth time an Aggie has been named the league s top player in five years. The Memphis, Tenn., product finished the regular-season with 18 double-doubles eight of which came in conference play as well as a triple-double. With his 15 rebounds vs. Chicago State, Jones now has 395 rebounds on the year, moving him into fourth place and just two shy of passing Pascal Siakam (394, ) place. 16 New Mexico State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia handed the reigns to the coveted Aggie men s basketball program to Chris Jans on Monday, April 17, naming the Fairbank, Iowa, native the 26th head men s basketball coach at NM State. Chris Jans EXPERIENCE NM State Experience 1st Season NM State Record 28-5 NM State WAC Record 12-2 Collegiate Experience (2nd as HC) 26 Seasons Collegiate Record Alma Mater Loras College 91 The 25-year veteran took the helm of an Aggie team that won a program record 28 games and won 28 games himself in his first year. Since his arrival, New Mexico State has beaten its first AP top-10 opponent in 17 season as well as take down a pair of Power 5 teams in Illinois and then #6/7 Miami. His tenure started off with a bang, sweeping both UNM and UTEP before winning 11-straight. Jans was named the WAC Coach the Year after leading the Aggies to a 12-2 conference finish to claim the regular-season title and added a WAC Tournament title to his name when the Aggies defeated Grand Canyon Under his direction, Jemerrio Jones was named the WAC Player of Year while Zach Lofton was named First-Team All-WAC. Jones was also named to the all-defensive team while AJ Harris joined Lofton on the all-newcomer list. In addition, Jones and Lofton were named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association s All-District VIII team. He recently began his second-stint at Wichita State prior to the start of the season under head coach Greg Marshall. At the conclusion of this past season, Jans was elevated to associate head coach before taking the NM State head coaching job. Prior to returning to WSU, Jans coordinated one of the nation s best turnarounds in in his first year as the head coach at Bowling Green. In just one season, he took a BGSU team that lost 20 games in and guided it to a record-setting overall mark in which was the most wins in a single-season for Bowling Green since (24). With the 21 wins, Jans became the first head coach in Falcons history to lead the team to 20 wins or more in his first year at the helm. His record-setting 21 wins eclipsed the 18 wins set previously by hall of famers Harold Anderson and Bill Fitch. The campaign also saw Jans lead BGSU to its first national postseason tournament victory since 1975 when the Falcons defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) in the 2015 Collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT). In that same year, Bowling Green finished Mid-American Conference play 11-7 which was the most wins in MAC play for BGSU since going 11-5 during the season. In addition, the Falcons also reeled off 11 road victories for the first time since the season. With the historic year for Falcon men s basketball, Jans was chosen by his peers as the National Association of Basketball Coaches top first-year head coach with the 2015 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year award. Before taking the helm at BGSU, Jans spent seven years alongside Marshall at Wichita State ( ). He was a member of the inaugural staff with Marshall at WSU and turned the program around to become the staple of the NCAA Tournament it is now. After just one season, the Shockers earned a CBI bid in 2009 followed by an NIT bid at home in 2010 with the help of future NBA guard Toure Murry and center Garrett Stutz. The Shockers began to break through in the campaign when they recorded 24 wins and a runner-up finish in conference play. Despite missing the Big Dance, WSU gave Shocker fans some hope when it reeled off five-consecutive wins and won the program s first NIT Championship. Wichita State claimed the Missouri Valley Conference title the following year and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2006 as the No. 5 seed before falling to the 12th-seeded Cinderella VCU Rams. Jans was instrumental in landing Ron Baker, a future All-American and NBA player, who helped guide WSU to its deep run in the NCAA Tournament in The Shockers broke a lot of brackets that season, taking down Pittsburgh and the overall No. 1 seed Gonzaga to reach the Sweet 16 before taking down a hot La Salle and Ohio State team to earn Wichita State its first Final Four appearance since In the final season of his first stint with the Shockers, Jans helped Wichita State set an NCAA record with a 35-0 start to the season. During that stretch, WSU ran the gamut in the Valley and became the first program to go undefeated in nearly 30 years. That season also saw Fred VanVleet, Cleanthony Early and Baker earn first-team all-conference selections while Early and VanVleet notched All-America honors on top of VanVleet adding MVC Player of the Year to his mantle of awards. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst College in 1992 before taking a similar role at NAIA Grande View College in Jans earned his first head coaching opportunity when he took over at NJCAA Division II Kirkwood Community College in NM State Men s Basketball Game Notes

17 Jans was named the Region XI Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to a season, which included a conference title and the program s first-ever national tournament appearance. He followed up his rookie season with a 31-6 campaign highlighted by Kirkwood capturing the NJCAA Division II National Championship and Jans being named the National Coach of the Year. Sandwiched in between his time at Independence Community College ( ) and Howard College ( ), Jans got his first taste of the Division I level as an assistant coach at Idaho ( ) under David Farrar. After Howard, he took over at Chipola Junior College and joined forces with Greg Heiar who played for Jans in his rookie season as a head coach at Kirkwood CC and was a fellow assistant coach at WSU. Success continued to follow Jans as he led Chipola JC to its first conference title in a decade while finishing sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament and finished 32-5 overall. Jans then made his second appearance at the Division I level, this time as an assistant coach at Illinois State ( ) on Porter Moser s staff before joining Marshall at Wichita State. Jans was a three-year starter at Loras College ( ) and was named a captain as a senior. During his time in Dubuque, Iowa, he helped the Duhawks break 16 scoring records and two NCAA Division III records for three-point shooting. A graduate of Loras College in 1991, Jans earned his bachelor degrees in marketing and finance. He and his wife Sheri have two kids, Nick and Maddie Gazda.
