MINNESOTA VIKINGS (1-1) SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: FOX Regional Coverage (WDAF-4 in Kansas City) Matt Vasgersian and Jayice Pearson. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Vikings will meet for the first time in a regular season contest at Arrowhead since 99 as Minnesota seeks a victory at Arrowhead for the first time since 74. KC makes its regular season debut at Arrowhead after back-to-back road games have left the squad with an 0-2 record for just the fifth time since 88. However, in all four of those previous instances the Chiefs have bounced back for a victory in their third game of the season. Last year, KC posted a 41-0 shutout vs. SF (10/1/06) in its third game after an 0-2 start. Kansas City is coming off a loss at Chicago (9/16), while Minnesota is 1-1 on the season after suffering a OT setback at Detroit (9/16). Despite meeting infrequently during the regular season, these two franchises are familiar training camp foes. Minnesota faces the unenviable task of attempting to upend a Chiefs squad that owns an NFL-best (.750) record at Arrowhead dating back to 90. Kansas City has also registered a league-best 20-4 (.833) record against NFC foes at Arrowhead since 95. Herm Edwards and Brad Childress are both in their second season guiding their respective franchises. Among active head coaches, only Tony Dungy (6) and Bill Belichick (5) have registered more playoff appearances than Edwards (4) since the start of the 2001 campaign when Edwards was a rookie head coach with the N.Y. Jets. Edwards led the Chiefs to a 9-7 mark and a Wild Card berth a year ago, while Childress posted a 6-10 record with Minnesota. Kansas City ranks eighth in the NFL in total defense, allowing ypg. The Chiefs defense has relinquished just two TDs and has allowed an average of just 13.0 offensive ppg. KC has not given up any points in the first quarter in 2007 and is tied for the NFL lead by permitting just six offensive points in the second half. KC is tied for fifth in the league, allowing 13.5 first downs per game. The Chiefs are also sixth in the NFL in pass defense (179.0 ypg) and are ninth in the league, giving up just 3.6 yards per rushing attempt. The Chiefs boast one of the league s most unique roster compositions. Only New Orleans and Washington (17) have more 30-year-old players than KC (16), while only Indianapolis (16) boasts more rookie and first-year players than KC (14). Next week the Chiefs travel to San Diego (9/30) for their third road game in four weeks, while Minnesota hosts Green Bay (9/30) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS VIKINGS Total Offense (28) (21) Rush Offense (27) (10) Pass Offense (24) (25) Total Defense (8) (20) Rush Defense (15) 76.0 (8) Pass Defense (6t) (25) Turnover Ratio (18t) +1 (8t) Pts./Game (31t) 20.5 (12t) Opp. Pts./Game (18t) 11.5 (3) THE SERIES Kansas City owns a all-time advantage over Minnesota in the nine previous regular and postseason meetings between the two clubs. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ CAN SET NFL TD MARK FOR TIGHT ENDS Chiefs eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (730), receiving yardage (8,781) and TD receptions (61), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060, 62 TDs). Gonzalez s 61 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 8,752 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (eight) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 18 career 100-yard receiving games, trailing only WR Otis Taylor (19) for the top mark in Chiefs history. Those yard games are fourth in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), Jackie Smith (22) and Sharpe (19). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 101 contests at Chicago (9/16), meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. 7 Kansas City s defense kept the Chiefs in the game throughout the day by forcing three Chicago turnovers, but it wasn t enough as the Chiefs dropped a decision at Soldier Field. A special teams TD and a bit of trickery helped the Bears build a 17-7 halftime advantage as Chicago never looked back. The Kansas City defense made its first statement on the Bears second offensive play of the game. Chicago QB Rex Grossman hit WR Bernard Berrian for an 18-yard gain, but Chiefs S Bernard Pollard forced a fumble and DT Alfonso Boone recovered it. However, Kansas City was unable to mount a drive when it took over at midfield. Chicago put together the first scoring drive of the afternoon with 79-yard march that took over eight minutes. The balanced drive featured eight rushing plays and seven passing plays. The Bears used a bit of chicanery to score their first touchdown when Grossman hit tackle-eligible John St. Clair for a twoyard scoring pass and a 7-0 lead. That lead quickly doubled as WR Devin Hester returned a Chiefs punt 73 yards for a touchdown minutes later. Chicago would tack on a 46-yard field goal to give the home squad a 17-0 edge with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter. The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the first half when QB Damon Huard engineered the two-minute drill to perfection. After a 31-yard completion to TE Kris Wilson, Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for a 26-yard pickup. On the next play, Huard lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone where rookie WR Dwayne Bowe hauled in the pass which was actually intended for Gonzalez for a 16-yard TD. Bowe s first career score cut the Chicago lead to The Bears would turn another punt return into points in the third quarter when Hester s 31-yard return set up a 38-yard field goal from K Robbie Gould. The Kansas City defense forced its second turnover of the day when LB Napoleon Harris intercepted a Grossman pass. K Dave Rayner, who was signed during the week, was good on his first FG attempt for Kansas City. He split the uprights on a 45-yard field goal to cut Chicago s lead to The Chiefs caught a bad break in the early going of the fourth quarter when a 35-yard Huard-to-Bowe flea flicker into the end zone was nullified by an illegal motion penalty. Instead of the seven points, Kansas City would get nothing as a subsequent 48-yard field goal try by Rayner was blocked four plays later. LB Donnie Edwards would give Kansas City life as he intercepted a Grossman pass and returned it to the Chicago 18-yard line on the Bears next possession. The Chiefs, however, came up empty again as Huard s fade pass for WR Samie Parker was intercepted by S Danieal Manning in the end zone. Kansas City would get one final opportunity to put points on the board when QB Brodie Croyle relieved a wounded Huard. Croyle methodically marched the Chiefs to the Chicago 24-yard line, but RB Michael Bennett was stripped by CB Charles Tillman with 2:21 remaining and the Bears were able to run the clock out to preserve the victory.
