RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The 2007 preseason officially gets underway on Saturday when Kansas City travels to Cleveland to face the Browns in the preseason opener for both clubs. The Chiefs are entering their second campaign nder head coach Herm Edwards, while Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel begins his third campaign directing the Browns fortunes. Edwards is attempting to build on a successful debut as the Chiefs field general. In 2006, he became the first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season with the club. Kansas City became just the fifth club since 2000 to rebound from an 0-2 start to qualify for the postseason. The Chiefs finished the year with a 9-7 record, tying for the most victories by a first-year coach in franchise annals. It marked the second time Edwards had led a team to the postseason in his first season with a club he also achieved the feat with the 2001 N.Y. Jets making him one of just five coaches in league history to accomplish that feat. Cleveland is coming off a 4-12 campaign in However, one of those wins was a shocking OT upset of the Chiefs. Kansas City held a lead in the fourth quarter, only to see Cleveland score the game s final 17 points behind backup QB Derek Anderson. Both clubs will be attempting to learn more about their quarterback situation in this contest. In Kansas City, QBs Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle are dueling for the starting job. In Cleveland, QBs Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson are in camp, while QB Brady Quinn was unsigned as of August 3rd. Saturday s game will also mark the return of LB Donnie Edwards to the Chiefs defensive unit after a five-year stint with San Diego. Up next for the Chiefs is a nationally-televised Thursday night contest at Arrowhead vs. Miami (8/16) on ESPN. Cleveland hosts Detroit (8/18) in the Browns next preseason matchup FINAL STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS BROWNS Total Offense (16) (31) Rush Offense (9) 83.4 (31) Pass Offense (22) (23) Total Defense (16) (27) Rush Defense (18) (29) Pass Defense (18) (15) Turnover Ratio (T10) -15 (31) Pts./Game (15) 14.9 (30) Opp. Pts./Game (11) 22.3 (22) THE SERIES Kansas City and Cleveland are tied in their all-time regular season series at 9-9-2, while the Chiefs hold a 3-1 advantage in preseason action. 2 THE HEAD COACHES HERM EDWARDS NFL Head Coach: 7th Year NFL Coach Overall: 15th Year NFL Overall: (.490) Regular Season: (.500) Postseason: 2-4 (.333) Record w/kc: 9-7 (.563) Record w/nyj: (.488) Overall NFL Exp: 27 years College: San Diego State ( 77) Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fiveyear stint ( ) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 24, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. EDWARDS VS. THE BROWNS Herm Edwards is 1-2 all-time vs. the Browns. Jets 10, CLEVELAND 7 Butch Davis 12/3/06 L CLEVELAND 31, Kansas City 28 Romeo Crennel HOME TEAM IN CAPS ACCORDING TO COACH HERM... On his message to the team for training camp in 2007: Real simple - Compete. That s been my message from the spring until right now and going into the season. You have to be a competitive guy if you re going to make this team. This is my second year here and the first year I had a veteran football team and I wanted to make sure I knew more about my players. I have to set a different foundation for all these young players this year. On the defense: Defensively we re equipped with some speed and we have some athletic defensive linemen. I think with this system that s what you need. We have three linebackers that we feel are very, very fast. We have some big guys who can move and run. Our end situation is pretty good. With that being said, we have a chance to be a pretty good defense. Last year we took a step in that direction and we ve got to continue to take bigger steps. On the quarterback battle: Obviously, Damon (Huard s) main strength is he s been in the league a long time. He s seen a lot of things. He s played in this league and he s been successful really being a bullpen guy. He s won games for us. But he hasn t been in the forefront being a starter for 16 games, so that s something new for him. For a young QB like Brodie Croyle, last year he knew he was coming in to be the third [QB] and this year he has an opportunity to start. So, there s competition and there s a lot of pressure on him but that s good because you need to find that out. On the running back situation: It s running back by committee for right now and that s OK and really good for us because they ll get a lot of snaps with the first group especially for Michael (Bennett) and Kolby (Smith). ROMEO CRENNEL NFL Head Coach: 3rd Year NFL Coach Overall: 27th Year NFL Overall: (.313) Regular Season: (.313) Postseason: 0-0 (.000) Record w/cle: (.313) NFL Playing Experience: None AFC West Experience: None College: Western Kentucky ( 69) Romeo Crennel was named the 11th head coach in Browns history on February 8, Crennel has led Cleveland to a record over his first two seasons as an NFL head coach. He served as the defensive coordinator/defensive line coach for Cleveland in 2000, prior to working as New England s defensive coordinator from While in New England, Crennel crafted a Patriots defense that won three Super Bowls. Crennel originally entered the NFL as the N.Y. Giants special teams/defensive assistant coach ( 81-92). He served as the defensive line coach for both the Patriots ( 93-96) and N.Y. Jets ( 97-99) before his initial coaching stint in Cleveland. Born June 18, 1947, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Crennel began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater of Western Kentucky ( 70), before being promoted to defensive line coach. Crennel enjoyed coaching stops at Texas Tech ( 75-77), Ole Miss ( 78-79) and Georgia Tech ( 80) before entering the pro ranks. A four-year starter as a defensive lineman, Crennel gave up likely all-conference honors to fill in at offensive tackle as the Hilltoppers struggled on offense. The move solidified the team s offensive line and earned Crennel team MVP honors. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER LAMAR HUNT The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble style, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both Kansas City s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. 7 LAST TIME Browns 31, Chiefs 28 (OT) December 3, 2006 Cleveland Browns Stadium 71,972 KANSAS CITY CLEVELAND On a brisk afternoon on the shores of Lake Erie, Kansas City watched Cleveland erase a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to claim a upset win on a 33-yard field goal in overtime. Only a week prior Cleveland was shut out at home, but came out firing on its opening drive. QB Charlie Fyre hit WR Joe Jurevicius for a pair of passes before capping the drive with a perfectly-placed throw to WR Braylon Edwards for a 23-yard TD. The Chiefs offense needed a possession to get warmed up, but on their second drive they were able to put the ball in the end zone. RB Larry Johnson carried on five of the first seven plays before QB Trent Green threaded a 22-yard TD pass to WR Eddie Kennison to tie the score at 7-7. Kansas City did not slow down on its next possession as Green and TE Tony Gonzalez found a rhythm. The Chiefs quarterback placed a pass on the back of Cleveland S Brodney Pool in the end zone where Gonzalez went over the defender to pull in the nine-yard scoring pass. Cleveland would respond by converting a fourthand-one at the Kansas City 19-yard line. Three plays later Frye found RB Jason Wright for a 16-yard gain down to the one-yard line. From there RB Reuben Droughns crossed the goal line from one-yard out to tie the score at at the half. The Chiefs opened the second half with a 39-yard Green-to-Kennison pass on the very first play. Then Green hit RB Michael Bennett and Gonzalez on backto-back pass plays before TE Kris Wilson made a shoe-string catch for a six-yard touchdown. After exchanging turnovers, Browns P Dave Zastudil pinned the Chiefs at their own one-yard line. Unfazed, Kansas City simply marched 99 yards for its fourth touchdown of the day. Facing a third-and-six at the KC fiveyard line, Johnson took a handoff around left end for a 16-yard pickup. Using a mix of the run and pass Kansas City used 14 plays and 7:41 as Green threw his fourth TD pass of the day, a 23-yarder to Gonzalez. Cleveland would cut into the score when backup QB Derek Anderson subbing for injured starter Charlie Frye led back-to-back fourth-quarter scoring drives. A 54-yard shovel pass to Wright keyed the first TD, a six-yard pass to TE Steve Heiden. Anderson would find Heiden again minutes later, this time for a three-yard touchdown to tie the game at with 35 seconds left. The teams would trade turnovers on the final two possessions of regulation as Green fumbled, but LB Kawika Mitchell intercepted an Anderson pass to force overtime. Kansas City won the coin toss in the extra period, but was forced to punt. From there, Cleveland put together a game-winning drive. Facing a secondand-15 from the Kansas City 45-yard line Anderson escaped out to the right and broke a tackle attempt by S Greg Wesley to pick up 33 yards. The Browns handed the ball to RB Jason Wright on two consecutive plays to set the ball up on the left hash. K Phil Dawson then walked on the field and calmly drilled a 33-yard field goal to cap the Browns comeback win. 8 LAST GAME Colts 23, Chiefs 8 January 6, 2007 RCA Dome 57,215 KANSAS CITY INDIANAPOLIS The Chiefs fell behind 16-0 in an AFC Wild Card contest at Indianapolis and never could find the offensive rhythm to get back into the game, falling by a score of 23-8 at the RCA Dome. The Colts outgained the Chiefs by a 435-to-126 margin in total yards and limited Kansas City to just one-of-11 on third downs. Despite a valiant defensive effort by Kansas City that held the Colts third-ranked offense out of the end zone for over 40 minutes, Indy shut down the Chiefs offensive attack. The Colts dominated nearly every category of the first half, but KC s defense kept them in the game by forcing three QB Peyton Manning INTs and relinquishing three first-half FGs, instead of TDs. The Chiefs went three plays and out on each of their six first-half possessions and the Colts capitalized on three of their ensuing drives. On Indianapolis first drive rookie RB Joseph Addai ripped off runs of 10 and nine yards to set up a 48-yard field goal. On the Colts second drive Manning and WR Marvin Harrison converted on third-and-eight with a 42-yard pass to the Chiefs 25-yard line. Indianapolis would reach the KC one-yard line, but like they did on the first drive the Chiefs defense forced them to settle for a 19- yard K Adam Vinatieri field goal and a 6-0 lead. The Chiefs squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second quarter. CB Ty Law who is no stranger to the playoffs with 13 postseason starts intercepted Manning for his fifth postseason INT and returned it to the Colts nine-yard line. RB Larry Johnson ran the ball to the two, setting up third-and-goal. However QB Trent Green fell on third down after being stepped on as he pulled from center. Things got worse for Kansas City when K Lawrence Tynes 23-yard field goal try hit the left upright, leaving the score at 6-0. Kansas City dodged another bullet when rookie S Jarrad Page picked off Manning at the KC two-yard line with 1:50 left in the first half. However, once again the Chiefs offense couldn t move the ball and the Colts were able to sneak in a third field goal, this time from 50 yards out, to make it 9-0 at intermission. Manning would throw his third INT of the game on the opening possession of the second half, as Law snared his sixth postseason INT, his fifth career playoff pickoff of Manning. The Chiefs couldn t convert the turnover into points and instead watched Indianapolis rattle off a 12-play, 89-yard TD drive. Manning completed four passes before Addai scored on a six-yard TD run to increase the Colts lead to With 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, the Chiefs finally notched their initial first down of the game on a six-yard pass from Green to TE Tony Gonzalez. That jumpstarted the offense as they would rattle off 60 yards en route to a Green-to-Gonzalez six-yard TD. A successful two-point conversion from Green to TE Kris Wilson cut the Colts lead to 16-8 after three quarters. The one-possession deficit would not last long however as the Colts engineered a back-breaking, nine-play, 71-yard scoring drive that finished with a Manning-to-WR Reggie Wayne five-yard TD and moved Indianapolis ahead by a 23-8 margin. The Chiefs still had hope with 4:00 left when they moved the ball to the Indy 26-yard line, but Green was sacked and stripped by DE Robert Mathis. Indianapolis would register its third turnover of the game on Kansas City s final possession, clinching the Colts 23-8 win. IND Vinatieri, 48-yard field goal (10-39, 4:51).
