We still have a ton of things to learn and I'm excited. I like what I'm seeing and I like the effort." Mixed with returning leading scorer Elle Kerfoot (13.7 points) and spark plug Daidra Brown, Bonvicini finds herself able to push the team harder in preparation for its third season against D-I opponents. "I've definitely challenged these kids much harder than I did my previous teams because this team has been able to accept that challenge," she said. "Not only have they reached it, they've exceeded it." Well, they're not always responsive. At practice Tuesday, there was more running and teaching as the Redhawks bobbled through drills. "If there's no sense of urgency, I'll call you out," Bonvicini told her team. Eligible for the Women's NIT and Women's Basketball Invitational this season, the Redhawks have set a goal of advancing to the postseason. They were 8-22 during the season, 4-10 at home. Earlier, the senior guard spent the majority of Friday in bed, resting as much as possible to overcome flulike symptoms. By game time, she was tossing up three-pointers to help the Seattle University women's basketball team post a victory against San Francisco at Connolly Center. The Redhawks advanced to the Thanksgiving Tournament championship game. They will face Akron at 8 p.m. Saturday. San Francisco will play Loyola of Chicago in the consolation game at 6 p.m. "Now it's an ice bath and bed," Kerfoot said of her plans after scoring a game-high 19 points, including making 4 of 5 three-pointers. Seattle U (2-3) lost its previous three matchups because of poor offensive execution. Therefore, coach Joan Bonvicini put her team through strenuous practices this week, working on the offense and rebounding. Against San Francisco, senior Talisa Rhea was able to find Redhawks post players inside for assists while sophomore Ashley Ward joined Kerfoot with impressive three-point shooting, making all three she took. By Jayda Evans Seattle Times staff reporter Decades later and the conversations start the same for Joan Bonvicini. It just takes a mix of good coaching, talented players, a supportive administration, "and a little luck," Bonvicini said. SU has a good crop of young players and transfers. Bonvicini wants the program to start heavily recruiting top Top players. comments Hide / Show comments Sitting in a high school gym in Southern California, someone will inevitably walk up and say, "You don't know me but I was here when your Long Beach State teams were killing everybody." Instantly Bonvicini, now coach at Seattle University, is back in the 1980s reminiscing about how her storied career began. "It happens every time I'm in California," said Bonvicini, who returned Thursday from a recruiting trip in the state. She led the 49ers to the NCAA Final Four in 1987 and "It's great. I think I've grown and I'm a better coach, but I was very fortunate to have some of the best players that ever played." Names like Penny Toler and Cindy Brown demanded the national spotlight. But the experience revealed a formula Bonvicini hopes she can use to give Seattle U the same type of acclaim one day. "Joan is a tenacious competitor," said Washington State coach June Daugherty, who's known Bonvicini since No both comments attended basketball have been camps posted as youths. to "I this don't article. care if it's basketball or getting in line for the bus, Joan Start is going the to get conversation first. There's going to be great things that come from that program just because of her competitiveness and passion. She's one of the better minds in the game." Seattle U defeated LBS on the road last season. Afterward, coach Jody Wynn and boosters organized a gathering, bringing former players back. Wynn would like the 49ers to rekindle the glory days Bonvicini built with her program. There won't be a similar celebration on Friday. But the memories will still be there, re-energizing Bonvicini to continue the path in Seattle. "Any time Joan comes through town, they want to honor her," said Toler, who's currently general manager of the Los Angeles Sparks. She's another believer in Bonvicini turning around the Redhawks. "More than anything she's a great recruiter. Joan has the gift of gab. Two, she's warm and three, Joan will always see the good in people. It's (building SU into an NCAA team) a more difficult task because you have a lot other schools.... But if I was betting on anybody to get it done, I would bet on Joan because she's relentless." Just like those teams from the 1980s. Jayda Evans: or jevans@seattletimes.com. On The Redhawks (2-4) host Long Beach State (2-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. Connolly Center. Plenty would scoff at Bonvicini's dream. The Redhawks are in their final season transitioning back to being a Division I program, joining the WAC next season. But neighboring Washington recently hired a big-name coach in Kevin McGuff, plays in better facilities and has the opportunity to air more games on television via the new Pac-12 network. Bonvicini disagrees. "I wouldn't put the TV stuff at the top of the list," she said of a modern-day recruit's wants. "And I think facilities are important, but I wouldn't put that at the top of the list, either. I think it's about relationships. "People want to know that their kids are going to be coached well and that they're going to be treated well and that they're going to have a good experience. My dream and my goal is to do here what I did at Long Beach State." Bonvicini quickly points to players like star post Elena Delle Donne choosing Delaware, vaulting the Blue Hens to its first-ever national ranking (24), or even Princeton snagging top recruits from California as examples that unknowns still have a chance to be competitive.

As the 6-foot-2 sophomore forward went through drills with coaches, Sowell realized she was the only post player on the court. Although Seattle would welcome a few transfers and freshmen in the fall, Sowell knew it would take time for them to adjust. "I knew I had step up and kind of be the post player for the team," she said. "I was the only one returning this season, and the coaches have really encouraged me and pushed me to work hard and do everything I can to play well. It's been a change in my mentality." It's been a change for the better. Sowell is averaging a team-leading 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Redhawks while shooting 62.1 percent from the field. Having a year of experience under her belt has provided Sowell with a measure of comfort on the court this season. "Last year was definitely a year to adjust to a lot of things like being away from home and learning the college pace of the game, which is obviously a lot faster," she said. "There is a lot of adjusting that takes place with a new team and a new coaching staff and learning what they want and expect from me to play at this level. But I think I understand this year what it takes to be more successful." Seattle is playing as an independent in Division I, but will join the Western Athletic Conference beginning in the season.
