Redhawk Women s basketball Weekly Release #1 This Week for the Redhawks: Seattle University women s basketball played their two exhibition contests last weekend, topping Simon Fraser, 72-69, and Western Washington, in an exciting double overtime game. The Redhawks look to build on their success in and look forward to opening the regular season at home as they host the University of the Pacific Tigers. The players will also sign autographs following the game, and this year s posters will be available for fans. This Week s Student Promotions: When students pick up their free game ticket (with Student ID), they will have a chance to sign up for a special drawing to win two $25 gift cards, one to Starbucks and one for Cherry Street Coffee House! Following the game, Coach Bonvicini will address the crowd and draw the winning student name. Must be present to win. Scouting Pacific: The Pacific Tigers recorded an record last season, reaching the Second Round of the Women s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) before falling to San Diego, The Tigers downed Arizona State in the first round of the tournament, Their 18 wins was the most since 2002 and their third-place finish in the Big West was their best finish since Kendall Rodriguez started all 32 games, averaging a team-leading 13.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg. The Tigers return their top four scorers, all averaging in double figures last year, and are picked to finish second in the Big West this year. Last Time vs. Pacific: Last season, the Redhawks took the Tigers into a close overtime contest, but ultimately fell, in Stockton, Calif. Kacie Sowell recorded her ninth double-double of the season, and recorded a career-high 18 rebounds and three assists. Bonvicini s 1000th Career Game: Head coach Joan Bonvicini will coach her 1000th career game versus the University of Washington at Key Arena on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. A special pregame presentation will take place prior to announcement of the starting lineups. Fans are encouraged to come early and stay late, as the first 500 fans will receive an SU beanie, courtesy of State Farm. For more information and to enter visit WAC Preseason Poll: The Redhawks were picked to finish fourth in both preseason Western Athletic Conference polls, both by the media and by the league s head coaches. Kacie Sowell was named to the First Team in both polls and Ashley Ward was named to the Second Team in the Coaches Poll. Utah State was favored to win in both polls. Three Redhawks Named to College Sports Madness WAC Preseason All-Conference Teams: College Sports Madness announced their WAC Preseason All-Conference Teams and Kacie Sowell was named to the First Team, Ashley Ward was named to the Second Team, and Taelor Ross was named Preseason Freshman of the Year. Seattle U Joins the WAC: On July 1, 2012, 17 of Seattle U s 20 sports found a conference home, joining the Western Athletic Conference. The WAC is the sixth-oldest of the nation s 11 FBS (Division I-A) conferences. SU is one of 10 full members of the conference alongside current members Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State, as well as fellow newcomers Denver, UT Arlington, UTSA, and Texas State. NCAA Division I: After 33 years since Seattle U last competed in a NCAA Division I conference, and after four years of NCAA Division I reclassification, SU returned to full NCAA Division I membership in August The Redhawks will now compete for conference championships and will be eligible for automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.

6 6 head coach joan bonvicini FOURTH season/southern connecticut state 75 Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women s collegiate basketball history and former coach at the University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head coach of the Seattle University women s basketball team on Tuesday, Aug. 4, The veteran head coach finished her third season at Seattle University behind an all-time (.647) record and is 11th on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list for women s college basketball. She became the 18th coach in NCAA Division I women s basketball history to reach the 600-win mark in February The Redhawk head coach also boasts win seasons over her historic coaching career. Bonvicini led the Redhawks to one the most successful seasons in program history during the season, notching their first 20-win season as an NCAA Division I program, as well as leading them to their first NCAA Division I postseason appearance in school history. Seattle U made it to the semifinals of the Women s Basketball Invitational before falling to the University of Northern Iowa, Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54 student-athletes earned Pacific-10 accolades and 21 earned conference academic honors. At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a (.563) record over 17 seasons. She led the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and the WNIT Championship in She was head coach at Arizona from 1991 to Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women s Basketball Hall of Fame (1994), the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (2005), and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2007). She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State in 1979, posting a record (.821) in her 12 seasons with the 49ers. Long Beach State won 24 games or more every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned ten conference championships and ten straight berths in the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and With the 49ers, she was named the 1981 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Following the season she was named the Region VIII and PCAA Coach of the Year. In 1984, she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been honored by the city of Long Beach as their 1989 Citizen of the Year. The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State before being promoted to head coach at age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern California. A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in the AIAW Championships. In 1975, she was named Region I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.

7 7 Leaders of the Pack: Kacie Sowell, Maggie McCarthy, and Daidra Brown will serve as team captains in O Neill Promoted to Associate Head Coach: In June 2012, head coach Joan Bonvicini announced that assistant coach Kristen O Neill was promoted to associate head coach. The 2012 season will be her fourth year with the team, and she has been a major contributor in their transition back to NCAA Division I. Bonvicini Hires Shaquala Williams: In June 2012, Seattle University head women s basketball coach Joan Bonvicini has announced the hiring of assistant coach Shaquala Shaq Williams. At the collegiate level, Williams was a four-year varsity basketball letter winner and three-time All- Pac-10 honoree at the University of Oregon, as well as being named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (1999) and Pac-10 Player of the Year (2000). Most recently, she served as assistant women s basketball coach at Sacramento State University Season Recap: After a historic season and postseason run for, the season came to an end one game shy of the championship game, as the University of Northern Iowa came away with the win in the Women s Basketball Invitational semifinals, Despite the loss, this season and this team will be remembered as one of the great- est teams in Seattle U women s basketball history. Among their vast accomplishments, the team notched the first 20-win season as an NCAA Division I program. They also reached their first NCAA Division I postseason, the first postseason appearance for any Seattle U team since the school began the NCAA Division I reclassification process during the school year. The Redhawks more than doubled, and nearly tripled, their win total from one season ago, finishing after finishing 8-22 during the season. They finished 14-6 on their home court, winning 12 of their last 15 home contests. Sophomore Kacie Sowell was named to the WBI All-Tournament Team and was also named Independent Women s Basketball Player of the Year. Coach Joan Bonvicini was named Independent Women s Basketball Coach of the Year. College Sports Madness named a Seattle U player the Independent Player of the Week ten times over the season (Sowell six times, senior Talisa Rhea three times, and sophomore Sylvia Shephard once). Sowell recorded 18 double-doubles over the season and finished as the team s leading scorer. She averaged a doubledouble for the season, averaging 14.3 ppg and 10.2 rpg. Rhea finished as the team s second leading scorer, averaging 14.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Rhea also led the team with 165 assists. Sophomore Ashley Ward also finished the season averaging in double figures, averaging 10.3 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Nationally, Sowell tied for ninth in NCAA Division I in double-doubles (18), finished fifth in the nation in field-goal percentage (56.6 percent), Ward finished 26th in NCAA Division I free-throw percentage (84.9 percent), and Rhea finished 26th in the country in assists per game (5.2). Senior Elle Kerfoot also became Seattle U s all-time leader in made three-pointers (finishing with 193) and became the 11th player in program history to pass the 1,000 career point mark (finished with 1,077 total career points).
