2 The Sacramento Kings are dedicated to making a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of people in need and at risk in the Sacramento area. With literacy as a top priority, Joe and Gavin Maloof have forged a strong working partnership with local literacy centers and area school districts. In the Maloof family s first two years of owning the Kings, the organization s community efforts were rated best in the league in NBA fan surveys. That service to the community expanded in 2001 as J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sacramento Kings number one in the NBA for overall fan experience, adding to the 3 rd straight community service achievement. In addition, Joe and Gavin Maloof were the inaugural winners of the Sports Humanitarian World Hall Of Fame s Most Involved Executives for GEORGE J. MALOOF SR. COMMUNITY CUP Joe and Gavin Maloof have dedicated the first home game of the preseason every year as the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup. Each season, the Maloof family will donate at least $100,000 of proceeds from the Community Cup game to a local charitable community improvement project. This year s game is scheduled for October 14, 2001 against the Dallas Mavericks. Our father was a very community-oriented man, both in his professional and personal life. By dedicating our first home game each year to a long-term charitable commitment to children and families in need, we feel we are recognizing and honoring our father s beliefs in the importance of giving back to the community, said Joe Maloof. Gavin Maloof added, Our entire family sees community service as a major priority for the Kings organization. We are dedicated to assisting those in need in our community. This annual event is a great way to tip-off each new Kings season. Last year s George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup benefited an afterschool arts program partnership with the Sacramento City Unified School District. The Kings $100,000 donation is renovating a historic school administration building (1619 N Street) in downtown Sacramento. The site will be home to Hemispheres, a new after-school visual and performing arts center. In 1999, proceeds went to refurbish the baseball fields in South Sacramento, which host the Airport Little League organization. The 2001 recipient of the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup is the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation. The $100,000 donation will support construction of the new Community Cultural and Youth Sports Center in Sacramento. The Kings presenting partners of the 2001 Community Cup are Raley s and Bel Air, Coors Brewing Company, and UPN 31 KMAX. MALOOF TEAM MEMBER PROJECTS Maloof Sports and Entertainment full-time and event team members participate in community projects, donating their hard work, expertise, and energy. Past projects include a site preparation for the 17th Avenue Park, currently know as the Bill Bean Park, building a new gateway to the Oak Park neighborhood at 14th Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., school improvements at Kit Carson Middle School, and renovation of Gardenland Park. Kings volunteers will also serve Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds with the TLC Soup Kitchen for the eighth consecutive year, along with holding a party for children who need a little extra cheer during the holiday season. TEACHER APPRECIATION NIGHT Every year the Sacramento Kings recognize the top teachers in Sacramento County. This year s outstanding group of teachers and educators will be recognized on February 19, 2002 when the Kings play the Atlanta Hawks. Each teacher will receive tickets, dinner, and an award during halftime on behalf of a grateful community. 322

3 KINGS READING TEAM CHALLENGE The Kings join Pepsi, Tower, and Allstate Insurance to encourage young people to make reading a life-long habit. Kids are encouraged to pick up their Kings Reading Team Challenge scorecard at various locations in the Sacramento area, including participating libraries, schools, ARCO Arena, Tower, and Allstate Insurance offices. The goal is for students to read as a team for a total of 100,000 minutes. Each successful youth who returns a completed scorecard by reading 20 minutes a day for twenty days will receive a special prize, courtesy of the Kings, Pepsi, Tower, and Allstate Insurance. Kings players and staff will make personal appearances at various locations throughout this season to promote the importance of making reading a life-long habit. The Kings and Pepsi will also offer a classroom challenge for students and teachers. Last season, the Kings Playoff Reading Challenge was an enormous success with over 2,000 students reading over 2.4 million pages. This year s winning class will be visited by a Sacramento Kings player and featured during a Kings halftime broadcast. LITERACY CENTERS In keeping with the spirit of Team Up and emphasizing our efforts towards literacy, the Kings will work hands on in the community by cleaning up, building, or rebuilding local literacy centers. Locations may include, but are not limited to, school and public libraries, computer rooms, and nonprofit community centers. Volunteers from both Maloof Sports and Entertainment and supporting corporate partner Operating Engineers Local Union 3, will help adopt rooms or buildings in need of upgrades into quiet areas for students to read and study. In addition to the Reading & Learning Center improvements, the Kings will also hold a book donation drive during the month of December, offering a way for fans to join the Kings during our literacy efforts. TEAM CAPTAIN OF THE WEEK Special students are recognized during Kings games as a Team Captain of the Week. Once a week, students will be selected to present the game ball to the referees and represent the Kings as an honorary team captain. The student will also receive tickets to the game to enjoy all the action on the court. The Team Captain of the Week is made possible by Wells Fargo Banks. TICKET TO THE FUTURE Quest, Southwest Airlines, and the Kings are offering students a chance to write about technology and travel through the Ticket to the Future essay contest. Students select from a variety of questions, write an essay, and send it in for a chance to win. The top twenty essay winners will receive a personal computer, monitor, and printer. The top three students will also receive a visit from a Sacramento Kings player to their school. In addition to the essay contest, Quest and Southwest Airlines will fly a group of underprivileged students to a museum or education center for a unique experience. Last year, students from Elder Creek Elementary School (SCUSD) flew to Los Angeles on Southwest Airlines and spent a day at the California Science Center. NECA/IBEW is joining the Kings in recognizing these teachers by providing each of them with a $1,000 grant towards their school and profiling each teacher on a Kings radio broadcast. Two teachers will also be chosen for a very special visit from a Kings player to their classroom. Comm. Service 323

4 RALEY S AND BEL AIR REMARKABLE KIDS Sacramento area school children get the chance to attend a Kings game at ARCO Arena in the Raley s and Bel Air Remarkable Kids section. Students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in the classroom are rewarded with this Kings experience of a lifetime. INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE THROUGH EDUCATION The Kings Community Foundation has pledged 40 junior college scholarships to graduating seniors from Sacramento s high schools. The first class eligible for scholarships graduated at the end of last season (June, 2001). TicketMaster is a presenting partner in this community re-investment program. KINGS BASKETBALL SUMMER CAMPS Beginning this summer, the Kings will conduct a basketball camp to provide the highest level of basketball instruction to area youths. The new state-of-the-art practice facility, located adjacent to ARCO Arena, provides the Kings a venue to host basketball drills, guest speakers, games, quality instruction, and an opportunity to interact with NBA personalities. Proceeds from the camp will benefit the Sacramento Kings Community Foundation. Sierra Springs Water and Krispy Kreme support these camps to make them possible. GATORADE MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL LEAGUE The Kings and Gatorade are partners to support after-school basketball in the Sacramento area. Through a multi-year agreement, the partnership has refurbished local school gymnasiums with backboards, rims, and floor maintenance equipment. As the NBA and WNBA launches a national program supporting youth basketball, named Junior NBA/Junior WNBA, the Kings and Gatorade will look to support local leagues with league enhancements and incentives. MEMORIBALIA DONATIONS FOR LOCAL FUNDRIAISERS Every year, Kings players and coaches autograph thousands of items for local raffles and auctions that help raise millions of dollars for the Sacramento-area community. Schools or non-profit organizations benefit from this great opportunity to offer a priceless autographed item or Kings merchandise for their fundraising efforts. GOLD RUSH CLASSIC In order to preserve one of the most prominent national sporting events in Sacramento, Maloof Sports and Entertainment recently agreed to take over the management and development of the Gold Rush Classic, a fixture on the Senior PGA Tour since its inception in In addition to saving another major league franchise in Sacramento, Joe and Gavin Maloof guaranteed the continuation of the area s largest fundraiser. The Gold Rush Classic has raised over $4.1 million for non-profit charities over the past 13 years. Since the Gold Rush Classic started in 1987, the tournament has generated more dollars and in-kind services for charitable organizations than almost any other event in the greater Sacramento area. This year s event was held from September at the Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills, California, and offered a Pro-Am featuring NBA Legends and celebrities. Some of the SPGA s top golfers, including 2000 winner Jim Thorpe, Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher, and the 2001 winner Tom Kite, were joined by notables Charles Barkley, George Gervin, Bill Murray, and the Kings own Chris Webber. NBC Inside Stuff Executive Producer Ahmad Rashad and Gavin Maloof chaired the tournament that benefited Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo s "Mayor s Summer Reading Program," and the Technology and Learning Center of the El Dorado County Boys and Girls Club. 324

5 The NBA is deeply committed to creating programs that improve the quality of life for all people, with a special emphasis on reading and youth programs. Each year the league, its players and its teams donate millions of dollars and hundreds of hours to charities and community outreach programs. Through its extensive outreach programs, team foundations, and public service announcements, the NBA is deeply involved in addressing a variety of important social issues in its communities. Read to Achieve is a year-round program designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading that will reach an estimated 50 million children a year. It is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. In addition to a $100 million a year promotional campaign, the effort includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs. With the support of long-time national partners such as RIF and Scholastic Inc., Read to Achieve will create Reading and Learning Centers throughout North America in an effort to provide access to reading materials and technology to young people everywhere. These centers are modeled after the work done at the Eastern Branch of the Boys & Girls Club in Washington, D.C., that was unveiled during All- Star In addition, a wide variety of reading timeouts, book distribution events, book fairs, reading programs, essay events and on-line programs are being developed for the upcoming season. Integral components of the program are national and local All-Star Reading Teams comprised of current and former NBA and WNBA players and other members of the NBA family, who promote reading efforts through in-arena events, Public Service Announcements, and community appearances throughout the year. In recognition of the community outreach of our players, the league has established the Hometown Hero of the Month Award, which honors players whose efforts in the community are truly outstanding. To honor the NBA Player that reflects the passion that the league and its players have for their communities, all 29 NBA teams nominate a player for the Hometown Hero of the Month Award which is presented 12 times a year. Awarded annually at the conclusion of each league s regular season, the NBA and WNBA Sportsmanship Awards recognize players who embody the spirit of sportsmanship. The NBA makes a $25,000 donation on behalf of the NBA Sportsmanship Award honoree, and a $10,000 donation on behalf of each of the three divisional awardees, to the high school of their choice. In addition, the NBA will recognize National Sportsmanship Day with local events throughout North America. The NBA also supports the efforts of Prevent Child Abuse America, the Martin Luther King Holiday, Black History Month, Gallaudet University, and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. Comm. The dancers excite the fans with their high energy and explosive dance routines. Under the direction of April Cabrera-Co, the Royal Court Dancers continue to be considered the most exciting dance team in the NBA. 326
