1 THE DOPE SHEET OFFICIAL PUBLICITY, GREEN BAY PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL CLUB VOL. V; NO. 25 GREEN BAY, JAN. 22, 2004 SEASON REVIEW LOST OPPORTUNITY: Attempting to stitch-up wounds from the Packers divisional playoff loss at Philadelphia is futile. Because rather than enter 2004 proud of what they did accomplish one of the most successful campaigns in team history the Packers must instead begin a new season disappointed in what they did not accomplish. No doubt, the Packers confidence would ve been at a season-high had they become the first NFC team since 1987 to knock off the No. 1 seed in a divisional playoff. But, as Mike Sherman said, the bottom line is the Eagles won the game. So, once fans have something else to talk about, when training camp arrives, time hopefully will have clotted most of the wounds. Then, the Packers can regain confidence knowing: Since 1993, no other team has proven more resilient after playoff losses. Over the previous 10 seasons ( ), the lifetime of the salary cap and free agency, the Packers have the best postseason rebound percentage. Following season Lost in playoffs Made playoffs Missed playoffs Pct Green Bay Philadelphia Jacksonville Tampa Bay Miami Minnesota Pittsburgh San Francisco Indianapolis Dallas Kansas City New England St. Louis* San Diego Tennessee* Buffalo Detroit Denver N.Y. Jets Arizona Baltimore Carolina New Orleans Seattle Washington Chicago Cleveland Oakland* Atlanta N.Y. Giants * Oakland played in Los Angeles from ; St. Louis played in Los Angeles from ; Tennessee played in Houston as Oilers from won at least one Super Bowl during span Their franchise has compiled that rebound percentage during an era when nearly half of postseason clubs miss the playoffs the following season. Of the 120 playoff teams from , 56 (or 46.7 percent) failed to reach the postseason the next year. They re not the first to sustain such a crushing playoff loss. In fact, over the last 10 seasons ( ), eight Super Bowl teams including the 96 Packers rebounded from similar postseason heartbreak: Team Lost to In Super Bowl following year SF, Dal., 38-21, '93 NFC champ. Won XXIX, beat Dal. in rematch Pit., SD at home, 17-13, '94 AFC champ. Lost XXX Dal., at SF, 38-28, '94 NFC champ. Won XXX GB, at Dal., 38-27, '95 NFC champ. Lost XXXVII TB, at Phi., 31-9, '01 NFC wild card Won XXXVII, beat Eagles in NFC champ. RETURNING STARTERS: For the first time in the Brett Favre era, the Packers could return all 22 starters from their previous season s finale. That depth is rare in today s game because players change teams so often, with free agency and the salary cap. In fact, the last time Green Bay did it was 1991, when the team brought to training camp all 22 starters from its 1990 finale. The only 2004 question mark is left tackle Chad Clifton, eligible for unrestricted free agency. If the Packers resign him, though, all 22 starters from their playoff loss at Philadelphia are expected at 2004 training camp. Vince Lombardi replaced no fewer than seven starters while winning the NFL title five times in his nine seasons as Packers coach. However, he returned all 22 starters on only two occasions, from and The Packers won the NFL championship all four seasons. ONCE EVERY 60 YEARS: Mike Sherman received a lot of hindsight criticism for a crucial decision that didn t go the Packers way. What most may not realize, however, is the incredible odds the Eagles overcame to spawn those criticisms. "If you get a team into fourth-and-26, Sherman said, I think you've made the right call. We were able to do that, we just didn't make the play." If the Packers made the play, they likely would ve won and few, if any, would ve criticized. The call: With 2:30 left, facing a fourth-and-1, momentum in hand and a lead at the Eagles 41-yard line, the coach attempted unsuccessfully to draw Philly offside, took a delay of game, and punted, leaving the contest in his defense s hands (rather than go for it, risking field position and loss of momentum). The play: While some questioned the call right away, it didn t backfire until on the ensuing drive the Eagles converted an unbelievable fourth-and-26, with 1:12 left. The odds: What were the chances that Sherman s decision was not the correct call? Well, David Dolan, assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, using available NFL data estimates the odds of converting that play at that time were 1 in 339. Dolan and his colleagues estimate a play like that would occur once every 60 years. A SEASON OF INCHES: Despite the odds, that 4th-and-26 play didn t carry the anticipated shock-value, because a series of close losses had already thickened the Packers skin. In fact, four of the Packers seven losses were decided by inches. But in the end, those inches seemed to add up to four miles. Some said the Packers were only a few plays from a 13-3 regular season. The plays: Sept. 21 at Arizona: The Cardinals Dexter Jackson picks off Favre in the end zone with 7 seconds left, capping a 12-play, 68-yard drive. Arizona wins, Oct. 12 vs. Kansas City: With 9 minutes left in regulation, Green Bay up and in field-goal range, Favre s pass deflects off Donald Driver s hands and Jerome Woods 79-yard touchdown return steals the Packers momentum at a critical juncture, en route to overtime. Oct. 12 vs. Kansas City: On the Packers first overtime play, Ahman Green breaks several tackles and appears headed deep into Chiefs territory when Woods perfectly timed hit knocks the ball loose. One play later, the Chiefs score the game-winning touchdown. Nov. 10 vs. Philadelphia: The Packers defense holds the Eagles to 3 points and seven punts on their first 10 possessions. But late-game leg cramps sideline starting cornerback Al Harris, and Donovan McNabb hits Todd Pinkston on a corner route with 27 seconds left. The Eagles win DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF LEFTOVERS: The Packers lost a game in which they did not fumble. Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release.

2 The team had won eight straight games (all eight in 2003) in games without a fumble. Green Bay in a road game held a lead entering the fourth quarter. The Packers were 15-2 in such games under Mike Sherman ( ), and 42-9 with Brett Favre under center ( ). The Packers held the lead at halftime. In all five road wins during the season, they led at halftime. Including New England s win Jan. 10, teams carrying at least a five-game winning streak into the divsional playoffs had won 10 straight games, and 15 of their last 17. Green Bay posted eight sacks, a franchise postseason record. The previous mark was six, set in Super Bowl I, Jan. 15, 1967, when the Packers sacked the Chiefs Len Dawson four times and Pete Beathard twice. The eight sacks were the most by any NFL playoff team since Minnesota sacked Washington eight times in The league s postseason record is nine (four times). BOTH ENDS OF THE EMOTIONAL GAMUT: The Packers experienced both extremes during one of the most exciting NFL postseasons ever. Green Bay became only the second NFL team to play consecutive postseason overtime games. Marty Schottenheimer s 1986 Cleveland Browns, who lost when John Elway orchestrated The Drive in the AFC Championship, were the first. The Packers denied Seattle Jan. 4 when Al Harris became the first player ever to end a postseason sudden-death contest with a defensive touchdown. His 52- yard interception return sent Green Bay to Philadelphia. The Packers are now 2-1 in postseason overtime games, including a 1965 sudden-death classic that eliminated Don Shula s Baltimore Colts. WINNING CONSISTENTLY IN A LEAGUE OF PARITY: No other team has won more, and won more consistently, since the 1993 collective bargaining agreement. And most agree, winning in the current-era NFL is more difficult than ever. That 93 CBA decreased dramatically each player s average tenure with his team. Every offseason, NFL players have two significant reasons to become free agents, one at their option (unrestricted/ restricted free agency), and the other at their team s option (termination for salary-cap purposes). Those reasons didn t exist before Four straight winning seasons Mike Sherman s done it in his first four years as an NFL head coach. That s remarkable considering teams have changed head coaches 81 times since 1993, and only two tenures Sherman s and Dave Wannstedt s have produced winning seasons in each of their first four years. Sustained success was common from the 1970 merger to During the span, 16 teams were able to post winning records over four straight years (73 total fourseason streaks). However, since the 1993 collective bargaining agreement introduced the salary cap and free agency, only 11 teams have strung together four winning seasons (22 total four-season streaks) and just three since The Packers are the only club that has done it twice ( and ). Green Bay has nine playoff appearances since 1993, more than any other club. In that span, 10 teams have two or fewer playoff berths (San Diego 2, Chicago 2, Carolina 2, Seattle 2, Cleveland 2, Arizona 1, New Orleans 1, Washington 1, Cincinnati 0, Houston 0). SINCE 2000: By the time Mike Sherman took over as Green Bay head coach in 2000, the impact of the 93 CBA had saturated the league. Dallas and San Francisco, the winningest 1990s franchises, had lost most players who led them to glory, and were still dealing with ramifications of earlier salary-cap decisions. Sherman, Wannstedt and the Eagles Andy Reid are the only three coaches, representing the NFL s only three teams, with winning seasons each year since What s more, Sherman and Reid are the only NFL coaches who have not lost more than two straight regular-season games (minimum 17 games coached). MOST UNIQUE OFFENSE EVER: Tom Rossley in 2003 fielded one of the best overall offenses in NFL history. In fact, no other team in league annals has: Rushed for at least 2,500 yards, Passed for at least 3,300 yards, Completed at least 65 percent of passes, Rushed for at least 18 touchdowns AND Passed for at least 32 touchdowns; what s more, Only two NFL teams over the last 20 seasons have combined at least 2,558 yards rushing with at least 3,377 yards passing: the 2001 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 1988 Cincinnati Bengals. BEST PACKERS RUSHING OFFENSE: The Packers, who own one of the top rushing histories in pro football, originated the phrases Run to Daylight, the Lombardi Sweep and the Guardian Angels. So the fact that Green Bay broke several franchise rushing records in 2003 was very significant, especially since the Packers foundation is still Bill Walsh s West Coast passing system. Ahman Green, who d previously broken the 41-year-old single-season yardage mark, erased Andy Uram s 64- year-old record when he ran for a 98-yard touchdown, his last carry of the regular season, Dec. 28 vs. Denver. In the process, the Packers broke their single-season rushing record, which also stood for 41 years. Since Green s idol, Walter Payton, retired after the 1987 season, only four NFL teams have posted more rushing yards in a season: 2,774 Pittsburgh Steelers ,710 Cincinnati Bengals ,669 Baltimore Ravens ,629 Denver Broncos ,558 Green Bay Packers 2003 Best NFL records since 1992, 1993, etc. Since 1992 Green Bay San Francisco Miami Pittsburgh Denver Kansas City Since 1993 Green Bay San Francisco Denver Kansas City Miami Since 1994 Green Bay San Francisco Denver Miami Pittsburgh Since 1995 Green Bay Denver Tennessee San Francisco Miami Since 1996 Green Bay Denver Tennessee Miami New England Since 1997 Green Bay Tennessee Denver Miami Tampa Bay Since 1998 Tennessee Green Bay Miami St. Louis Denver Since 1999 Tennessee St. Louis Green Bay Indianapolis Philadelphia Since 2000 Philadelphia Green Bay Tennessee St. Louis Miami Since 2001 Philadelphia Green Bay New England St. Louis Miami Since 2002 Philadelphia New England Tennessee Green Bay Indianapolis

3 Green Bay s rushing quantity was obviously up in 2003 (507 carries, most since 1978), but so was its rushing quality. Green Bay averaged a franchise-record 5.05 yards per carry, second in the NFL behind San Diego (5.15). What s more, the last time the Packers ran for more than 18 touchdowns (their 2003 total) was 1964 (23). And, the 03 Packers ran for more first downs (127) than any Green Bay club in 39 years (133 in 1964). The Packers franchise-record 2,558 rushing yards would ve led the league if not for Baltimore (2,669) and Denver (2,629). It was the first time in 20 years that three NFL teams rushed for at least 2,558 yards. In 1983, ironically when several Hall of Fame quarterbacks were drafted, five teams (the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Redskins and Bears) topped 2,558. TOP OFFENSIVE LINE, 2003: According to combined rankings in two key O-line categories rushing yards per game and sacks per pass play Larry Beightol fielded the NFL s top offensive line during the 2003 regular season: Combined 2003 NFL Rank, 2003 NFL Rank Ranking Rushing Yds/Gm Sacks/Pass Play 8 Green Bay Denver San Francisco Jacksonville 8 8 San Diego Carolina Kansas City Indianapolis New Orleans Minnesota 4 23 Tampa Bay 24 3 The current starters (tackles Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton, guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, and center Mike Flanagan) began starting together in Since that season ( ), no other team has allowed fewer sacks (68) and only one other offensive line has graded out better: Combined Rushing Yds/Gm Sacks/Pass Play Ranking , NFL Rank , NFL Rank 5 San Francisco Green Bay Kansas City San Diego Denver Miami Pittsburgh Indianapolis Cincinnati N.Y. Jets Tennessee After 2002 injuries hit four of the five positions, the front picked up where it left off in 01 and did not miss a 2003 start. Take out 2002 when Flanagan played most of the year at tackle, Rivera played the season with torn ligaments in both knees, Tauscher tore an ACL in Game 2 and Warren Sapp ended Clifton s season with an unnecessary blindside hit and the Packers current starters are tied for the league s top unit: Combined Rushing Yds/Gm Sacks/Pass Play Ranking 2001 & 03, NFL Rank 2001 & 03, NFL Rank 6 Green Bay San Francisco San Diego Kansas City N.Y. Jets Denver Indianapolis Cincinnati Pittsburgh Dallas In 2003, the Packers tied for second in the NFL (with Indy), allowing just 19 sacks a franchise low for a 16- game season. Detroit led the NFL with 11. The team was 6-1 in games without allowing a sack, including a Nov. 16 win at Tampa Bay, in which Green Bay ended the Bucs NFL-record streak of 69-consecutive games with a sack. During that contest, Clifton shut out Simeon Rice, who tied for second in the league with 15 sacks. Green Bay s six regular-season games without a sack were its most ever (team sacks became official in 1963). According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Packers went three consecutive games without allowing a sack for the first time in team history, Sept The line went 256 passing plays between sacks, from Sept. 7 to Oct. 5. MEMORABLE FINALE: On Dec. 28, a day dripping with irony, the Packers playing their best football of the season during a 4-0 December were at the mercy of an official s judgement call, 2,002 miles from Lambeau Field in Tempe, Ariz. Few (if any) Packers players and coaches, focused simply on winning their game and not on games out of their control, had any idea what was happening during the first 58 minutes of the Cards-Vikings game. Neither were they aware (nor did they understand) that the wrong teams had won the early games, allowing Seattle to clinch a tiebreaker with Dallas that terminated Green Bay s wild card hopes even before it kicked off with Denver. Only Arizona, and not Green Bay, could decide the Packers playoff fate. Arizona erased an 11-point deficit in the final 1:54, scoring two touchdowns and recovering an onside kick. Playing valiantly for Head Coach Dave McGinnis, the Cards scored the game-winning touchdown with time expired, when Josh McCown hit Nate Poole on a 28- yard pass. Poole got only one foot down, but the official ruled the Vikings pushed him out of bounds touchdown. The replay official upstairs confirmed Poole had possession, and the Lambeau crowd communicated to the Packers: they were in the playoffs. Arizona lost the No. 1 pick in the 2004 draft, but not the Packers gratitude. BALL SECURITY: The Packers last fumbled on Dec. 7, a win vs. Chicago (a Favre-Green exchange), and executed their last 343 offensive plays including postseason without a fumble. Green Bay closed 2003 without losing a fumble over its last 405 offensive snaps (since Nov. 27 at Detroit). Ahman Green did not fumble over his last 246 offensive touches (225 rushing attempts, 20 receptions, one fumble recovery). The Packers lost just two fumbles over their last nine games both on Thanksgiving. Including playoffs, Green Bay went 8-1 in games without a fumble, and 3-6 when fumbling. NOT BAD FOR A THIRD RECEIVER: Among receivers with at least 25 catches, Javon Walker finished second in the NFL with a 17.5 average. Dallas Joey Galloway (19.8) led the league. Over the last eight games, including playoffs, Walker averaged 24.1 yards per catch (23 receptions, 511 yards), with five touchdowns. On Jan. 4 vs. Seattle, Walker tied the NFL record, and is now one of five players to record 100 yards receiving in each of his first two playoff games. The list includes Sterling Sharpe, the Packers last first-round receiver before Walker, and two of the NFL s most memorable postseason tilts: Lenny Moore s performance in the 1958 Colts-Giants sudden-death league championship, and Dwight Clark s 1981 effort in the NFC Championship, a game that included The Catch. Player, Club Season(s) 100-yard games Lenny Moore, BalC at NYG, 101 yds ( 58); vs. NYG, 128 yds ( 59) Dwight Clark, SF 1981 vs. NYG, 104 yds; vs. DalC, 120 yds Sterling Sharpe, GB 1993 at Det, 101 yds; at DalC, 128 yds Javon Walker, GB vs. Atl, 104 yds ( 02); vs. Sea, 111 yds ( 03) Steve Smith, Car vs. DalC, 135 yds; at StLR, 163 yds 2004 FOES: The Packers at home will face Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Dallas, the N.Y. Giants, Jacksonville, Tennessee and St. Louis. The team will travel to Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Washington, Houston, Indianapolis and Carolina. The 04 slate includes six playoff teams (Dallas, Tennessee, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Indy and Carolina), a rematch with the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field and the team s first trip to Washington D.C. in 25 years.

No. 2 Dan Marino (four) is the only other player in history with at least four 30-TD seasons. Reached 3,000 yards for a 12th overall season, and tied No. 2 John Elway ( , ) on the NFL s alltime list. Dan Marino (13) paces the list. By reaching 3,000 for a 12th consecutive year, Favre extended his own NFL record. ON TOUCHDOWN-PASS LIST: Favre (346) put No. 2 Fran Tarkenton (342) in his rear-view mirror Dec. 22 at Oakland, and now looks up at only Dan Marino (420) on the NFL s alltime touchdown pass list. At his current pace, Favre would not catch Marino until MOST ACCURATE SEASON, TOO: With a 65.4 completion percentage, Favre established a career high and franchise record (both 64.1 in 1992). FAVRE PASSES GREGG: The ironman on Dec. 7 passed Forrest Gregg for the longest consecutive games-played streak in Packers history. Only one man has played more games in a Packers uniform than Favre (191), Hall of Famer Bart Starr (196). So, the Packers looked up the numbers: Over their careers in a Packers uniform (where they played the vast majority of their NFL games), Taylor actually fumbled (one fumble every 61.0 touches, 33 fumbles, 2,012 touches) more often than Green (one fumble every 66.2 touches, 22 fumbles, 1,457 touches). Even Green's idol, the late Walter Payton, fumbled more often. Payton, according to Elias, over his Bears career fumbled 34 times in 2,173 touches (50.5).
