1 From the President Last Saturday was a difficult day for the club in terms of the football results and we are not shying away from that. Losing the playing coach and captain as well as others unavailable at present means we have to continue to dig deep. I m very proud of this group and am convinced that rewards will come. This club has its best opportunity in 30 years to build sustained success. The building is the most rewarding part and that s where we are at right now. Understanding where you are at and what is required is the part most clubs struggle with. We have a clear picture of both. However it is also important that we not lose focus on just how well other parts of the club are going. In particular the netball sides are going from strength to strength. The netballers have done their building and are working hard to sustain and improve their performance. On the weekend the A grade team played good opposition and were able to win convincingly. As stated before they are very well lead by not only Kym, but also their senior players. Ali, Sarah, Annie, Teresa and others set the Official Newsletter of The Imperial Football Netball Club Issue 11, 2012 tone for the group. If they continue to build their momentum they are well placed for another assault on a finals campaign. The netball club has been a tremendous addition to our club over many years now. Importantly we have been able to link the two different sports more and more each year. This is by and large a result of the cooperation of the people involved in both football and netball. This week we received important news which helps us take the next step in being able to help the netballers in their endeavours. Hugh Delahunty, the minister for sport and recreation is coming to our netball game on Saturday to announce that we have been successful in attaining funding for new lighting at the courts. This will mean training moving back to our own courts rather than Mansell reserve, in addition the potential for night games. Well done to Curly Roberts and all those involved as this has been an ongoing project over months. In particular Brent Williams who has done a lot of work with this project. As mentioned last week there is plenty going on with the antique fair and the ball. Please continue to support the people driving these initiatives. Anna Clohesy and JC need our co-operation over the next 2 weeks. Please do what you can to assist. Good luck to all teams on the weekend. Jules
2 The crowd at 27 Deakin last week. to make your shift you need to make arrangements to swap with another person. Thanks for helping out. Canteen Roster for this week 30/06/ am Sam Hickey Leah Kennedy pm Jade Scott Riley Croft Gabriel Williams pm Courtney Weightman Danielle Mazzini Logan Middleton Jonah Wright pm Cassie Fillery Kane Cameron Luke Kerr their first clash against Irymple. The Div 1 girls made some unforced errors and were given a run for their money but in the end their netball experience helped them hold on to the win. With a few girls away, the C reserve and C grade teams were made up of some reliable U/17 girls who helped the teams have fairly big wins. The C grade girls are playing very steady consistent netball and working extremely well as a team. Like most weeks the B grade team had a tough game on their hands but with some persistence and determination they worked together and came out with the victory this week. A grade started off close with Imps only having a small lead at the quarter time. Slowly but surely we edged away at them and ended up with a 25 goal win. The whole team did exactly what we needed to on the day especially Megan Gray who was far too strong for Irymple s midcourt. Apologies for the girls who were best but there were no results in the paper. Ali Netball report Hatches CANTEEN ROSTER Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped out in the canteen so far this season. Below is the roster for this round versus Merbein. If you are unable Round 10 Vs Irymple A Grade Best: Megan Gray B Grade C Grade C Reserve U17 Div U17 Div On the netball front it was a very positive day for Imps with 6 wins from 6 against a very competitive Irymple squad. It didn t matter whether the final score showed a 20 goal or a 1 goal win, all games displayed a high standard of netball. The u/17 div 2 girls showed huge development with their netball skills and as a team, winning by 10 goals compared to a 1 goal loss in The proud dad, Gareth with Jimmy Preston.

It wasn t until sometime later that Keato discovered he didn t have any of his gear with him. No boots, socks, shorts. Evidently he d left them at training the Thursday before but we were playing at Irymple. By this stage it was too late for Keato to go and get his gear so Mick Hickey did the dash into town. 4 Look-a-likes The Gribble brothers... Don t forget to send photos or nominations for Tool of the Week or anything else you want to see in the G & W to martinhill_associates.bigpond.com PAST COACH S PROFILE: Bob Kerr Nickname: After I did my knee in 83 (first time) Pud MacDonald used to call me Quentin after the little bloke in the wheelchair, which I thought was cruel and felt for Quentin. Games coached: At Imps Three seasons and four finals. Was lucky enough to get a ride off Crossy's coat tails and was his assistance coach at Melbourne with the Under 19's and reserves for 3 years. After that coached a senior side called Tooronga-Malvern for a number of years where I had half the side of former Mildura players. Premierships coached: Zero, Lucky enough to finally coach the Imps Under 13s last year who went through undefeated. Current weight: 88 kgs and its going down weekly as my wife and I are in training for a half marathon on 1st July this year Coaching weight: To long ago to remember Why did you coach at Imps: Approached by the late John Groves on the recommendation of the legendary Michael Bowden. How long did you coach at Imps: 3 years then another 3 years as Mark Cross's minder (on and off the field) Favorite on field coaching memory: Watching the crowd gasp as Michael Bowden made a come-back under a cloud of secrecy at Red Cliffs and we won the game. Favorite off field coaching memory: Belting Bruce Croft with a track suit top as he yawned at one of my inspiring 1/2 time speeches. It must have worked as we were behind at that stage and got up and won. From memory that was the day there was a brawl after the game involving the late Mr. Lynch. Who was the player you thought was the most unlikely to play seniors but did anyway: I was always dubious if Luke (my boy) would "make it.". He was a bit small and a little slow and could not kick. However he had the growing spurt late, worked very hard on his kicking and fitness and has been rewarded. I love going to the footy to just watch his attack on the footy. Favorite (not necessarily best) footballer you coached and why: Murray Leake was a gem of a bloke who had no fear. He also requested to take over the famous number 37 when I left. Brett Pickering was the most passionate player you would ever want to play with. Best footballer(s) you coached: Paul Hogarth as I loved the way he would call for the ball from the late Neil (great bloke) Croft. Paul does struggle to pronounce his "Rs". Paul played in a Reserves Grand Final at the MCG for Melbourne and was incredibly stiff not to be relisted the following season (change of coaching staff). If these were the end of season awards who would win them from the players you coached? Most consistent: John Price kicked one hundred goals, I' m thinking a couple of times. He was a very good player. Worst trainer: There is no worse trainer in the history of the club than the great man, Billy Hicks. He was a beauty. He had so many excuses one
5 could write a book, however he was a genuine fella and it really did not matter as he could not kick over a jam tin but had one of the best set of hands ever. My recollection tells me that John Price was also not to enthusiastic when it came to training. Worst listener: Pud McDonald without any hesitation. He would make a mistake and say, "Yeah I know". My come back was "if you bloody well known then why the #$%& are you doing it." Pud would then remain silent. I think I had the same conversation with him each time he played. game. After a couple of cans and then into the Green Room where Pickles and Croft would be in my shout. I always had two or three behind and I would leave the place in a mess. I had some incredibly great times with heaps of great blokes. I am now involved in the Junior Club and coaching the U14's and look forward when we have Darcy Hogarth, Mackenizie Mayne and Jack O'Donnell in senior football running around to prove that they are so much better that their fathers. Most selfish in front of goal: Garry Weaver. He could only kick left foot and would not handball for his life. One of my most favourite memories involving an Imps player was.: Whilst playing for Red Cliffs I grabbed Phillip Nash by his big bit of woolly hair and slammed his head into the turf. He got up and chased me around for the rest of the game trying to even up. He never caught me and he has carried that burden to this day. When he returned to the club and found I was involved it took him some to talk to me. We are great mates now. Three words that best describe you as a coach: Passionate, Loved Sunday training (Barrel at the Green Room), and Loyal. Anything else you want to add: I was extremely lucky to be involved with the club and had great support from Peter Maloney, the president at the time. Peter thought it was a great idea to have me mentored by the late Kevin "Drinkering" Pickering and John Croft. We had fantastic success in the first year and a slab of beer would always come into the rooms after the
