1 Screbench Duties WBA Dmestic Basketball GENERAL Scring system - The Waverley Basketball Assciatin (WBA) use tuchscreen scring technlgy called LiveScre, develped by a lcal rganisatin - Jamware. Events ccuring during the game such as scres and fuls are entered n the LiveScre tuch-screen by the screr based n signals made by the referees. The current game data in LiveScre is autmatically displayed n large LCD mnitrs n each curt where it can be viewed by players, spectatrs and fficials. Screr s respnsibility - The screr is recgnised as an fficial, just like the referees are. This means that scrers must refrain frm shwing strng vcal supprt fr a team r displaying dissent with refereeing decisins. A screr can be instructed t leave the screbench if, in the pinin f the referees, they becme verly invlved in supprting a team. In extreme cases scrers can be reprted. In this event they are reprted as an fficial and the cnsequences are far wrse than when a spectatr is reprted. BEFORE THE GAME Screbench fficials - Bth teams prvide a screbench fficial. One persn will perate the LiveScre tuch-screen and the ther will acknwledge referees signals, check the entries being made t LiveScre by the ther fficial and perate the directinal arrw. Intrduce yurself t the ther team s representative and decide: wh is undertaking which duty; wh will have primary duty t identify the number f a player wh has scred. Game fees The game will nt start until the referees have checked that bth teams have paid the prescribed fee fr the game, signified by a green dllar sign ($) next t the team name in LiveScre. If unpaid the dllar sign will be red. All Malvern Tigers games are paid n mnthly invice s the dllar sign shuld always be green. Registered players - The names f all registered players fr each team will be displayed in the lwer sectin f the LiveScre screen, called the Player Tray. These details are entered by the club s Membership Officer at the start f the seasn using an internet-based LiveScre administratin system. Changes are als made during the curse f the seasn when new players jin r existing players are mved t anther team. Adding players t the game - Players wh are present n their bench are added t the active sectin f LiveScre by tuching the ADD TO GAME buttn next t the player s name. Players arriving late A player arriving late may be added t the active sectin f LiveScre right up until the end f the game. New players If a player s name is nt displayed in the Player Tray the player s name, date f birth, gender and unifrm number are added t the team using the ADD NEW PLAYER TO GAME buttn. The player s unifrm number must be updated at the same time but the ther details can be added during a break in play r at half time if there is insufficient pprtunity befre the game cmmences. 2 Screbench Duties eligibility f the player (see next sectin) befre adding them t the team and entering their details. Playing under anther player s name is nt allwed and will result in sanctins against the ffending team and the club. Additnally, the player will nt be cvered by Basketball Australia s persnal injury insurance. Eligibility f new players The typical reasn fr adding a new player via LiveScre is because the player is an emergency player filling-in fr a regular player wh is absent. Emergency players must be registered with their club and are usually surced frm a team in a lwer age grup. On a given day a player can nly play in ne game in each age grup fr which they qualify. Fr example, an Under 10 player can legally play with ne, and nly ne Under 12 team as an emergency player. On the same day they can als play with their usual Under 10 team as a regular player. In thery, they culd als play in ne Under 14 r lder team as an emergency player n the same day. Unifrm numbers - Every player n a team must have a unique unifrm number. Check the unifrm number against each player s name and make any crrectins by tuching the displayed number and selecting the crrect number frm the drp-dwn list bx. The 36 valid unifrm numbers are: 4 15, 20 25, 30 35, and Unifrms - All players must wear a team unifrm cnsisting f the same clured tps and the same clured shrts, althugh the clur f the tps des nt have t match the clur f the shrts. Failure t cmply will result in a penalty f tw pints fr each nn-cmplying article, awarded t the ppsitin team. Fr Open Age teams the penalty is five pints. These pints are t be added t the nn-ffending team s scre by the referee at the half-time interval, r at the end f the game if the ffending player arrives after half-time. Penalties are nt applied during grading games t allw teams sufficient time t get their unifrms rganized. Unifrm clur clash - When the tw teams have similarly clured unifrms the team shwn n the left f the LiveScre screen is permitted t retain their unifrms. The ther team must change t alternative cntrasting tps. Malvern Tigers unifrms are reversible s it is easy fr the team t change t red tps in place f the usual black tps. Sets f alternative yellw tps are held in the Malvern Tigers strage cupbard at Waverley, which is in the vid area accessed thrugh the dr at the end f Curt 3. Alternative tps are als available fr hire frm the Waverley canteen. Late start pints will nt be awarded whilst teams are rganising alternate tps. Alternate unifrm numbers If hired r brrwed tps are used the numbers will usually be different t a player s nrmal number. Tuch the TEMP SHIRTS buttn t reset all player numbers t 00. Tuch the 00 next t the first player s name and select the player s temprary number frm the drp-dwn list bx. Cntinue this prcess fr all players. The numbers entered will nt be retained in Livescre. The player s usual unifrm number will appear at the next game. Late start - T cmmence the game, bth teams must have at least fur players n the curt and ready t play. If a team is late nt the curt, they will be penalised 1 pint fr each minute they are late, at the discretin f the referee. The game will be frfeited if a team is nt ready t play within ten minutes f the scheduled start time f the game. This delay can be extended if the tw teams are in agreement, s lng as bth teams agree that the team leading at the end f game time will be the winner regardless f which team was late in having sufficient playing numbers. 3 Screbench Duties Fixtured games are scheduled t cmmence at 45 minute intervals and have the fllwing timing rules: a) Games cnsist f 2 x 18-minute perids, and a 2-minute perid fr half time; b) Each team is permitted a maximum f ne 1-minute time-ut per half; c) The game clck des nt stp at any stage during the first half f the game; d) Time-uts are nt allwed during the last minute f the first half; e) The game clck will stp n every whistle during the last tw minutes f the secnd half f the game; START THE GAME Tuch the START GAME buttn t start the game clck. DURING THE GAME Scrers rle - The primary rle f the screbench fficials is t accurately recrd n the LiveScre tuch-screen the prgress f the game based n signals made by the referees during the curse f the game, and t infrm the referees f certain events and situatins that affect the game. The screbench fficials als: perate the alternating pssessin indicatr s it indicates the team wh will take pssessin f the ball at the next jump ball call; perate the game clck. mnitr the time a player is in the Sin Bin (as a result f a technical ful) and advise the team cach when that player is allwed t return t the game. The ADD PENALTY, LOG INJURY and TEAM FORFEIT buttns are nly used by the referees and are passwrd-prtected. Acknwledging referee signals - One screbench fficial shuld acknwledge all signals frm the referees, preferably by relaying back t the referee their exact hand signal and vice call. Refer t the separate Officials Signals guide fr details f referees hand signals. At the very least, make eye cntact and visually acknwledge by hand that their signal has been received. This als encurages the lessexperienced referees t make sharp and cncise signals t the screbench. If bth screbench fficials are unsure abut a referees signal, get the referee t repeat r verify it. Use cmmn sense. If the call culd have an immediate affect n the game (culd result in bnus free thrws due t excessive team fuls r benching f a player due t excessive persnal fuls) request immediate cnfirmatin frm the referee in questin. Use the curt siren t attract their attentin, if necessary. Recrding game events - The three mst cmmn events that need t be recrded in LiveScre during the curse f a game are scres, fuls and time-uts. Each time a whistle is blwn r the ball ges thrugh the basket lk t the referees fr a signal. The trail referee (the ne fllwing the directin f play) is primarily respnsible fr the flight f the ball and will nrmally signal a scre. The lead referee can signal a scre when a ful has been cmmitted in the act f shting. Either referee can signal a ful r a time-ut. See page 13 fr referee psitining diagram. 4 Scres - Screbench Duties Field Gals are wrth 2 pints frm within the 3 pint field gal area, and 3 pints frm utside the 3 pint field gal area, as signaled by the trail referee. Tuch the 2 (r 3) buttn next t the player s name if the sht is successful. The player s prgressive scre and the team scre will bth increment by 2 (r 3). Free thrws are wrth 1 pint. Tuch the 1 buttn next t the player s name if the free thrw is successful. The player s prgressive scre and the team scre will bth increment by 1. Fuls - The sequence f the referees signals fr a ful is: Pints successful (in the event f a ful n a successful shter); Number and unifrm clur f the player cmmitting the ful; Type f ful; Number f free thrws r directin f play. Recrding a persnal ful Tuch the FOUL buttn adjacent t the ffending player s name. The player s ful cunt (displayed in red) and the team ful cunt will bth increment by 1. Recrding an unsprtsmanlike ful Tuch the FOUL OTHER buttn adjacent t the ffending player s name, then select UNSPORTSMANLIKE frm the drp-dwn list bx. The player s ful cunt (displayed in red) and the team ful cunt will bth increment by 1. The ppsitin team will be awarded tw free thrws, fllwed by pssessin at the centre line extended. Secnd unsprtsmanlike ful If a player receives a secnd unsprtsmanlike ful they must leave the curt precinct fr the remainder f the game. The penalty is effectively the same as fr a disqualifying ful. Recrding a player technical ful Tuch the FOUL OTHER buttn adjacent t the ffending player s name, then select TECHNICAL frm the drp-dwn list bx. The player s ful cunt (displayed in red) and the team ful cunt will bth increment by 1. The ppsitin team will be awarded tw free thrws, fllwed by pssessin at the centre line extended. See als the Sin Bin rule belw. Recrding a cach r bench technical ful Tuch the BENCH FOUL buttn in the team s header area, then tuch either COACH r BENCH. A bench ful des nt cunt as a team ful s the team ful cunt will nt be incremented. The ppsitin team will be awarded tw free thrws, fllwed by pssessin at the centre line extended. Sin Bin rule This rule applies t every player r cach wh receives a technical ful. The ffending player (r cach) must leave the curt and nt participate in the game until five minutes f game time has elapsed. The scrers shuld recrd n a piece f paper the time displayed n the game clck when the player leaves the curt and the time when the player may return t the game. Half time is nt cnsidered game time s, fr example, a player cmmitting a technical ful with ne minute t g in the first half may nt return t the game until fur minutes have expired in the secnd half. Alert the cach and player as sn as the five minute Sin Bin perid has elapsed. Recrding a disqualifying ful Tuch the FOUL OTHER buttn adjacent t the ffending player s name, then select DISQUALIFYING frm the drp-dwn list bx. The player s ful cunt (displayed in red) and the team ful cunt will bth increment by 1. The ppsitin team will be awarded tw free thrws, fllwed by pssessin at the centre line extended. 5 Screbench Duties Persnal ful cunt - When a player cmmits his r her furth persnal ful, it is a curtesy t alert the Cach fr that team, as the Cach may wish t substitute that player ut f the game. When a player cmmits his r her fifth persnal ful, alert the referee, wh will then instruct the player t leave the curt and take n further part in the game. An autmated curt annuncement is made when a player s ful cunt reaches fur and five but it may nt be heard by the referees, player r cach. Team ful cunt - When a team cmmits its eighth team ful in that half f the game, alert the clsest referee. When a team cmmits its ninth and any subsequent team ful in that half f the game, alert the referee that signaled the ful. Bnus free thrws t the ppsing team will nrmally apply. The exceptin is an ffensive ful (a ful cmmitted by the team in cntrl f the ball). In this case, bnus free thrws d nt apply and pssessin is taken frm the side-line. An autmated curt annuncement is made when a team s ful cunt reaches eight r mre but it may nt be heard by the referees r cach. Time uts - When a team time-ut is signaled by a referee, first check that the team has nt already taken a time-ut in that half and then tuch the team s TIME OUT buttn. If that team has already used their alltted timeut (ne per team per half) advise the referees immediately s they can decline the timeut request. Time-uts cannt be taken during the last minute f the first half f the game. The clck des nt stp fr time-uts, except in the last tw minutes (see belw). When ten secnds f the sixty secnd time-ut perid remains an autmated curt annuncement will be made t alert the teams and t prmpt the referees t take actin t restart the game. Alternating pssessin indicatr - After the jump ball t start the game n further jump balls take place in the game. Instead, the tw teams alternately take pssessin f the ball frm the side-line when a jump ball wuld therwise have ccurred. The team whse turn it is t take pssessin is indicated by the alternating pssessin indicatr perated by the screbench fficials. As sn as ne team takes clear pssessin f the ball frm the jump ball that started the game, the arrw n the indicatr is mved s it pints in the directin f that team s basket (i.e. the end t which the ppsing team will try t scre). This will be indicated by ne f the referees. Frm that pint n, the team whse ffensive end is in the directin f the arrw will take pssessin f the ball frm the sideline. The arrw is reversed when the player n the sideline actually passes the ball back int play, and nt befre. Game clck in last tw minutes - In the secnd half f the game, the screbench fficials shuld alert ne anther when the game time is appraching the last tw minutes. Inside this perid the clck is stpped n every referee s whistle as sn as the whistle is blwn. The screbench fficial shuld keep their finger near the START/STOP game clck buttn n the tuch-screen s the clck can be stpped withut delay when a whistle blws. The clck is started again nce the ball is tuched by a player n the curt after being inbunded. If an inbunded ball ges ut f play again withut being tuched by any player n the curt the clck remains stpped. Referees are meant t signal t the screbench t start the clck but this desn t always happen in junir dmestic games. When free thrws have been awarded inside the last tw minutes, the clck remains stpped while the player is shting, and des nt start again until: a) after the last (r nly) free thrw is successful, the ball tuches r is tuched by a player n the curt after being inbunded frm the baseline; r b) after the last (r nly) free thrw is unsuccessful, the ball tuches r is tuched by a player n the curt fllwing the unsuccessful sht. 6 Screbench Duties Crrecting errrs An errr can smetimes be made when entering events n the tuch-screen, such as awarding a scre r ful t the wrng player, r awarding 3 pints instead f 2 pints. These can be crrected in tw ways: If the last entry made is an incrrect entry, tuch the UNDO LAST buttn t remve the last entry, then make the crrect entry in the usual way. If ne r mre entries have been made since the errneus entry, make nte f the errr and the time it ccurred. At the next break in play tuch the UNDO LOG ENTRY buttn, tuch SELECT ACTION TO UNDO and then tuch the lg entry t be deleted. Tuch UNDO t remve the ffending event. AT HALF TIME Prvide access t the LiveScre tuch-screen s the referee can check that all details are crrect and signed ff. Observe any change made by the referee (e.g. penalty fr incrrect unifrm r late start) s it can be cmmunicated t team caches. Add the name, date f birth and gender details f any new player if that infrmatin has nt already been entered. Check that all players in the active sectin fr bth teams are present n the team bench. Mve any absent players back t the Player Tray by tuching the REMOVE FROM GAME buttn next t the player s name. Players can still be added t the active sectin if they arrive after half time. Ensure the referees reverse the arrw n the alternating pssessin indicatr s it takes accunt f the teams change f ends after half time. AT THE END OF THE GAME Ensure the details f any player injuries are entered int LiveScre by a referee. Remain at the screbench until the referee has finished as yu may need t help reslve a query r crrect an errr. Thank the referees and the ther screbench fficial fr their help and supprt during the game.
