San Diego State 35, Navy 14 Dec. 23, 2010 San Diego, Calif. (AP) - Freshman tailback Ronnie Hillman rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns, while junior quarterback Ryan Lindley completed 18 of his 23 passes for 276 yards and two TDs to lead San Diego State to a victory over Navy in front of a San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl record crowd of 48,049 at Qualcomm Stadium. The Aztecs jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Hillman scored on a 22-yard touchdown run and wide receiver Vincent Brown caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from Lindley. Navy cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter when, on third-and-19, senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs hit wide receiver Greg Jones with a 30-yard touchdown pass. San Diego State went back up by 14 with 3:15 left in the half when Hillman scored on a 37-yard run, but the Mids answered with a 10-play, 73-yard scoring drive to cut the lead to at the half. Dobbs hit Jones with a 40-yard pass down to the San Diego State 11 and then scored from the one with seven seconds remaining to give the Mids some momentum heading into the locker room. Navy got the ball to start the third quarter and moved it to the San Diego State 9-yard line where the Mids had it first-andgoal. On first down, Dobbs was stopped for no gain and on second down he rushed for six yards to the Aztecs 3-yard line. On third-and-goal, sophomore slot back Bo Snelson was stopped for no gain and on fourth down Dobbs just barely overthrew an open Snelson in the end zone as the Mids turned the ball over on downs. The score remained until early in the fourth quarter when Lindley hit Hillman with a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo elected to punt on Navy s next drive when the Mids had a fourth-and-two at their own 42. The decision did not pay off as San Diego State kept the ball for the next 6:46, driving 80 yards on 13 plays with Hillman capping the drive with a one-yard run to make the score Series Vs. 3 Navy Bowl History Navy owns an bowl game record all-time. Last year, the Mids dealt Middle Tennessee a 24-6 loss at the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in what was Navy s 19th bowl appearance. The six points allowed by the Navy defense were the fewest in any bowl game last season and Navy was the only team not to allow a touchdown in a bowl a year ago. It was also the fewest points the Mids have allowed in a bowl game since shutting out Ole Miss, 21-0, in the 1955 Sugar Bowl. Ten days is tied for the quickest turnaround in FBS history going from a final regular-season game to a bowl game. In 2004, Southern Miss had its game against California pushed back to Dec. 4 due to a hurricane. The Golden Eagles lost to the Bears, 26-16, but turned around 10 days later and beat North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl, Prior to this year, the shortest time between a final regular-season game and a bowl for the Mids was 12 days in 2010 when Navy beat Army, 31-17, on Dec. 11 and lost to San Diego State, 35-14, on Dec. 23 in San Diego. To complicate matters further, the Mids were in final exams on Wednesday and Thursday before the Army- Navy game and Monday-Thursday after the Army-Navy game before leaving for San Diego on Friday. The Mids are 1-1 this year against the Mountain West, losing to Air Force and beating San Jose State. Opponent W L T Air Force Boise State Colorado State Fresno State Hawai i Nevada New Mexico San Diego State San Jose State UNLV Utah State Wyoming Total California Ties Navy has 14 players on its roster from California: sophomore long snapper Josh Antol (Trabuco Canyon), freshman defensive end Shane Artim (Woodside), freshman safety Randy Beggs (Temecula), freshman safety Dexter Bell (Imperial), sophomore corner Cameron Bryant (San Diego), senior long snapper Joe Cardona (El Cajon), freshman kicker Pat Cassley (Chatsworth), junior offensive tackle Brandon Greene (Highland), sophomore linebacker Ryan Harris (Mission Viejo), junior punter Gavin Jernigan (Lawndale), freshman linebacker Tony Mack (Moorpark), freshman outside linebacker Trey Olsen (Roseville), senior defensive end Paul Quessenberry (Carlsbad) and junior kicker NIck Sloan (San Diego). Navy Makes It 13 In A Row With A Victory Over Army (AP) - The game was over, and it was time for Navy to celebrate its 13th straight victory over Army. After the Midshipmen stood respectfully for Army s alma mater, defensive ends Paul Quessenberry and Will Anthony along with nose guard Bernard Sarra hoisted Ken Niumatalolo on their shoulders to give the winningest football coach in Navy history a free ride in the wake of a triumph. Niumatalolo (56-35) broke a tie with George Welsh for most wins at Navy. He also became the first to win his first seven games against Army (4-8). The streak remained intact because of Navy s unrelenting defense and quarterback Keenan Reynolds versatility. The Cadets went up 7-0 in stunning fashion, holding Navy to four yards on its first series before Josh Jenkins blocked a punt and Xavier Moss scooped up the ball and sprinted seven yards into the end zone. Navy senior Pablo Beltran never had a punt blocked before that play - it was his 151st kick - and it marked the first time since 2009 that Army scored first against the Midshipmen. It was a horrid first quarter for Navy, which gained 15 yards on three straight three-and-outs. Army maintained the upper hand in the second quarter, but the momentum turned when Cadets quarterback Angel Santiago was stuffed on a fourth-and-1 from the Navy 30 with just over two minutes left. The Midshipmen then turned to a seldom-used weapon - the forward pass - to pull into a tie at the break. Reynolds completed a 39-yard pass to Jamir Tillman to the Army 31 and connected with Ryan Williams-Jenkins for 12 yards before throwing a 9-yard TD pass to Tillman with 18 seconds to go before halftime. Navy opened the third quarter with a 41-yard kickoff return by Williams-Jenkins. That led to a 45-yard field goal by Austin Grebe for a 10-7 lead. Army then wasted a 50-yard drive, moving to the Navy 30 before Daniel Grochowski hooked a field goal try to the left. Reynolds subsequently directed a 12-play march that lasted nearly eight minutes and ended with the 5-foot-11 junior bulling over the goal line for a 10-point cushion. The two teams traded fumbles and a 52-yard field goal by Grochowski made it with 1:51 left, but Navy recovered the ensuing onside kick. The 13-game run by Navy is the longest in the history of a series that began in Before the Midshipmen went on their unprecedented streak, neither team in this storied rivalry had won more than five in a row. Navy leads the series In the previous 12 games, the Midshipmen outscored Army including 34-7 last year. Although the score in this one was closer, the result was the same. The Cadets haven t defeated the Midshipmen since First-year coach Jeff Monken became the sixth coach to lose to Navy over that span. Mids Tough When The Calendar Turns To NOvember Since 2003, Navy is (.754) after Oct. 31, including a 22-6 (.786) mark over the last six years.

The Mids kicked off the trend in 2002 when they finished third in the country in rushing, averaging yds/gm. In 2003, Navy led the nation averaging a then schoolrecord yds/gm. In 2005, Navy led the country in rushing for the second time in three years, averaging yds/gm. Navy finished the 2006 campaign averaging a nation sbest and then school-record yds/gm. The Mids rushed for a school-record yds/gm in 2007, becoming the first team in NCAA history to lead the nation in rushing three-consecutive years. In 2008, Navy led the country in rushing for an unprecedented fourth-straight year, averaging yds/gm. The Mids finished No. 2 in the country in 2013, averaging yards per game. It was the best rushing average by a Navy team since 2007 when that team rushed for a school-record yards per game. The Mids head into the bowl season as the nation s topranked rushing team, averaging yards per game. Fullbacks Having Big Year Navy s fullbacks have rushed for 1,592 yards and 10 touchdowns on 231 carries (6.0 yds/carry) this year. Senior Noah Copeland is second on the team in rushing with 889 yards and five touchdowns on 117 carries. Copeland is averaging a whopping 7.6 yards per carry. The school record for rushing yards per attempt (min. 90 attempts) is 8.3 by Shun White in His 7.6 yards per rush would also rank fourth in the nation if he qualfied (you must average 10 carries per game and Copeland is three carries short). If Copeland gets 13 carries against San Diego State, he would qualify for the NCAA stats. He has a chance to be just the second fullback in the triple option era (1995-current) and the first since Kyle Eckel in 2004 (235-1,147) to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. 11 2014 NAVY FOOTBALL Game NOTES: 11 Navy and Under Armour Form Multiyear Partnership The Naval Academy Athletic Association and Under Armour, Inc. recently announced a new multiyear partnership that designates Under Armour as the official outfitter of Navy s varsity intercollegiate athletic program. Under Armour, the leading sports performance and innovation brand, will outfit all of the Navy s 33 men s and women s varsity athletic teams beginning in the season. The comprehensive partnership also includes marketing and promotional opportunities. Under Armour has been a consistent and dedicated supporter of the military through its corporate UA Freedom initiative and long-standing association with organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project. This new affiliation further expands Under Armour s leadership in providing proven performance benefits to college athletes on all playing fields. The Naval Academy Athletics Association marks the brand s 12th Division I all-school partnership. Through an intercollegiate athletic program that is one of the largest in the country, and a highly organized club sports program and intramural sports program, each midshipman, male and female, is afforded the opportunity to compete in athletics at a level commensurate with his or her abilities. The emphasis on physical fitness is borne out in the first line of the mission of the Naval Academy: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically. The NAAA arranges the scheduling of over 500 contests in 10 conference affiliations for intercollegiate athletics, including the 33 varsity sports and 12 plebe/junior varsity teams, provides coaching staffs, all operational expenses and equipment, and maintains a fully staffed central office to handle the administrative details of the intercollegiate and club sports athletic programs. In addition, it makes all arrangements for approximately 1500 student-athletes who are members of the Navy sports teams for competition either in Annapolis or when they go on the road. Army-Navy and Poinsettia Bowl Uniforms The Under Armour uniforms are inspired by the First Navy Jack. In 2002, Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England ordered all United States Navy ships to fly the First Navy Jack with the Don t Tread On Me motto and moving rattlesnake in place of the regular Navy Jack for the duration of the global war on terror. The First Navy Jack, with its red and white stripes, was first used by the Continental Navy during the American Revolution. On the uniforms, the Don t Tread On Me motto is embroidered into the hem of each jersey as well as the side of the pants and right sleeve of the baselayer. The 13 red and white stripes featured in the flag are incorporated into the shoulders of the jersey, knee insets of the pants, palms of the gloves, baselayer and socks. Under Armour has designed a new N-Star logo using the red and white stripes of the flag with an interlocking rattlesnake, which will appear on the side of the helmets. All In The Family Navy has four sets of brothers on its 2014 roster, which is tied with Minnesota and Northwestern for the most in the country.
