SCOUTING HOUSTON The Cougars are a legitimate candidate for the College Football Playoff. After beating #3 Oklahoma in the opener, 33-23, Houston has steamrolled Lamar (42-0), Cincinnati (40-16), Texas State (64-3) and UConn (42-14). The Cougars have outscored the opposition, , and have won eight straight games dating back to last year. The eight-game winning streak is tied (Washington) for the third longest in the country behind Alabama (17) and Tennessee (11). Quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Greg Ward Jr. is the straw that stirs the drink for the Houston offense, completing 99 of his 140 pass attempts (.707) for 1,325 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Ward Jr. has also rushed for 178 yards and five touchdowns on 63 carries. Running back Duke Catalon is Houston s leading rusher with 225 yards on 48 carries and one touchdown. Linell Bonner is Ward s favorite receiver, catching 33 passes for 439 yards and two touchdowns. Steven Dunbar has 21 catches for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Six different Houston receivers have caught touchdown passes this year. While the Houston offense gets all the attention from the national media, the defense has been stout. The Cougars are giving up just 1.6 yards per carry (210 yards on 129 carries), while allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete just.570 of their passes. Houston has already recorded 40 tackles for a loss, 18 sacks and seven turnovers on the year (four interceptions and three fumble recoveries). The Cougars bring to Annapolis the #1 rushing defense in the country (42.0 yds/gm), the #6 total defense (250.0 yds/gm) and the #3 scoring defense (11.2 pts/gm). The defense is led by Steven Taylor, who has recorded 27 tackles, six tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks, while Garret Davis has 26 stops, four tackles for a loss and a sack. Quarterback Bobby Misch completed 10 of his 21 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while Rich Clouse (97 yards, 1 touchdown) and Mike Smith (96 yards, 2 touchdowns) both had huge games on the ground. Meanwhile, the Navy defense held South Carolina to just 102 yards on the ground. GM 5 NAVY VS. HOUSTON: 3 NAVY WINS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS Navy s victory over #15/16 Memphis last year was its first win over a ranked opponent since beating Notre Dame six years to the day ( ). It was also the most points the Mids have scored against a ranked opponent. It was Navy s first win over an AP top 15 team since Nov. 17, 1984, when it shocked #2 South Carolina, It was Navy s first road AP top 15 win since Sept. 21, 1974, when it knocked off #8 Penn State, 7-6 Navy has not beaten more than one ranked team in a season since 1957, when it defeated #5 Notre Dame (20-6), #10 Army (27-20) and #8 Rice (20-7) in the Cotton Bowl. The win extended the Falcons home winning streak to 15 straight. Jalen Robinette had five catches for 163 yards for Air Force, including a 75-yard TD catch late in the third quarter that broke open the game. The Midshipmen averted a shutout on a 6-yard TD run by Shawn White with 8:33 remaining. The optionoriented team finished with more yards passing (260) than rushing (57). For that matter, so did Air Force (257 yards passing, 173 on the ground). Steelhammer sat out the first half after being disqualified for a targeting call in the third quarter the previous week at Utah State. He watched the opening half from the locker room, but soon made his presence felt by picking off a Will Worth pass with Navy driving in the third quarter. He had another late in the game. He was the leader of a unit that had six sacks, eight tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and held a Navy team averaging yards rushing to just 57. The first half was ruled by defense with the only score a field goal. A surprise, too, given that Air Force and Navy came in averaging a combined 906 yards per game. Air Force began to pull away in the third quarter when McVey scored on a 1-yard plunge. Robinette soon followed with his TD catch from Nate Romine, who finished 8 of 14 for a career-high 257 yards and two scores.

NIUMATALOLO SPELLS SUCCESS Navy football coach Ken Niumatalolo has been on the the Mids sideline as either an assistant or head coach for 19 of the last 22 years ( and as an assistant, 2008-current as the head coach). Over those 19 years, Navy has compiled a record (.611), won 10 Commander-In-Chief s Trophies, gone to 12 bowl games and won six bowl games. Navy is in Service Academy games with Niumatalolo on the coaching staff (.703). In the 117 seasons without Niumatalolo, Navy has posted a (.549) record, won five Commander-In- Chief s Trophies (in 26 years), gone to eight bowl games and won three bowl games. Navy is (.460) in Service Academy games without Niumatalolo on the sideline. AMERICA S TEAM Navy has players who hail from 31 different states on its roster, the most in program history. Texas leads the way with 25 players, while Tennessee and California have both produced 17 Midshipmen. North Carolina has 14 players on the roster, while both Florida (13) and Georgia (12) are also in double digits. NAVY LOVES THE LONE STAR STATE Navy has 25 players from the state of Texas including key contributors Kyle Battle (Temple), Brandon Colon (Brownsville), Brandon Jones (Keller), Elijah Merchant (Humble), Maurice Morris (La Porte), Micah Thomas (Cedar Park), Anthony Villalobos (Fort Worth), Tre Walker (Texarkana) and Adam West (Spring). WHERE THERE S A WILL, THERE S A WAY In his first two career starts, senior quarterback Will Worth led Navy on fourth-quarter drives to give the Mids a come-from-behind win. Against UConn, Navy trailed with 4:57 left and Worth, set up by a 26-yard punt return by Calvin Cass Jr., drove the Mids 17 yards in four plays and scored the game-winning touchdown from one-yard out to give Navy a lead with 3:08 left. Navy held on to win after the Mids defense made a goal-line stand in the final seconds. Against Tulane, Navy trailed with 7:39 remaining and Worth led the Mids on a 10-play, 72-yard drive over 4:48 and capped it himself with a one-yard TD run with 2:57 left to give Navy a lead. Worth then hit a wide open Toneo Gulley in the flat for the key two-point conversion and the Mids held on for the win. Worth is the first Navy QB to lead the Mids to comeback victories in the fourth quarter in back-to-back games since Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada did it against Air Force and Pitt in Worth was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll in each of his first two weeks as a starter. SERVICE ACADEMY DOMINANCE Navy has been the dominant Service Academy over the last decade plus, winning 24 of the last 28 meetings (.857) against Air Force and Army dating back to the 2002 Army-Navy game. The Mids have posted an overal record of (.667) since 2003, won 10 CIC Trophies in the last 13 years and have gone to 12 bowl games in the last 13 years. HOUSTON: 5 CONTINUITY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS Navy has lost just five coaches in the nine years Ken Niumatalolo has been the head coach (three changed jobs, two retired). Six of Navy s coaches (five assistants and Niumatalolo) have been in Annapolis for at least 10 years, giving Navy, along with Air Force, the most coaches in the country that have been at the same school for 10 years or more. Defensive coordinator Dale Pehrson is in his 21st year at Navy, Niumatalolo is in his 19th year, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper is in his 17th year, slot backs coach and special teams coordinator Danny O Rourke is in his 15th year, offensive line coach Chris Culton is in his 14th year and outside linebackers coach Jusin Davis is in his 10th year. Of the three times Navy failed to score in the red zone last year, once the Mids took a knee (end of the game at Tulsa), once Austin Grebe missed a field goal (Tulsa) and Connecticut stopped a fourth down play in the final minute when Navy was trying to run out the clock. Navy has already failed to score four times in the red zone this year, including a 3-for-6 performance against UConn. Navy was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the one, had a field goal blocked and had a fumble returned for a touchdown. Navy also took a knee in the red zone to end the game against Tulane to account for the fourth. This season, the Mids are (.778) in the red zone, with 13 of those 18 (.722) resulting in touchdowns. Navy is ranked 98th in red zone offense. The Navy defense finished #12 in the nation in red zone defense last fall, giving up just 28 scores in 38 red zone opportunities (23 TDs, 5 field goals). This year, the defense has given up seven scores in eight opportunities (.875), with just three of the seven resulting in touchdowns (.375). Navy is ranked 89th in red zone defense. TOUCHDOWN NAVY Navy has scored a rushing touchdown in 52 consecutive games. The last time the Mids did not score a rushing touchdown they were shut out, losing to San Jose State, 12-0, in FAST STARTS Navy has outscored the opposition in the first half this year. The Mids have won the first quarter, 28-10, and the second quarter, Navy has scored 52 points in the second half of games, while giving up 55 points. Navy is 3-0 this year when scoring first, 0-1 when they don t. Navy is a remarkable 58-4 (.935) under Niumatalolo when entering the fourth quarter with the lead.

6 6: 2016 NAVY FOOTBALL GAME NOTES IN THE CLASSROOM The rigors a student-athlete faces at a Service Academy are unlike those a typical student-athlete might encounter on a day-to-day basis. Whether it s the added military training, mandatory room or uniform inspections or the academic schedule, Service Academy student-athletes are in a league of their own. The Naval Academy s academic day is divided into six 50-minute class periods beginning at 7:55 am and concluding at 3:20 pm. Unique to the Academies, all 4,400 Midshipmen reside on the Yard in Bancroft Hall and dine together in King Hall. Being elected team captain at the Naval Academy is one of the highest honors you can receive at an institution that prides itself on producing great leaders, said Niumatalolo. Toneo and Daniel are not only outstanding football players, but they are great leaders in the locker room and in Bancroft Hall and I have no doubt that they will be great captains for us. Gulley has played in 35 of Navy s 39 games over his career, earning three varsity letters. He has been a key player for the Mids not only on offense as a runner and blocker, but on special teams as both a kick returner and on kick coverage. Last year, he played in 12 of 13 games carrying the ball 12 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while catching two passes for 30 yards. He has been in on 14 tackles during his career and has returned 12 kickoffs. Gonzales has started 24 of Navy s last 26 games at linebacker and has recorded 151 career tackles, including five tackles for a loss and four interceptions. He has played great in Service Academy games, contributing 38 tackles in four appearances. Last year, Gonzales recorded 65 tackles, four tackles for a loss, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble for a Navy team that finished 11-2 on the year. 30 POINTS IS THE KEY Under Ken Niumatalolo, the Mids are (.807) when scoring 30 or more points in a game. Under Niumatalolo, Navy is (.831) when holding the opposition to under 30 points. MIDS CONSISTENTLY AMONG NATION S TOP RUSHING TEAMS Over the last 14 years, Navy has consistently been one of the top rushing teams in the country, never finishing lower than sixth. The Mids kicked off the trend in 2002 when they finished third in the country in rushing, averaging yds/gm. In 2003, Navy led the nation averaging a then schoolrecord yds/gm. In 2005, Navy led the country in rushing for the second time in three years, averaging yds/gm. Navy finished the 2006 campaign averaging a nation sbest and then school-record yds/gm. The Mids rushed for a school-record yds/gm in 2007, becoming the first team in NCAA history to lead the nation in rushing three-consecutive years. In 2008, Navy led the country in rushing for an unprecedented fourth-straight year, averaging yds/gm. The Mids finished #2 in the country in 2013, averaging yards per game. Navy finished #2 in the country in 2014, rushing for yards per game. It was the best rushing average by a Navy team since 2007 when that team rushed for a school-record yards per game. In 2015, the Mids finished #2 in the country (tied with Baylor), averaging yards per game. It was the third straight year that the Mids finished second in the country in rushing. Georgia Southern, coached by current Tulane coach Willie Fritz, finished first last year averaging a whopping yards per game. Through four games this fall, Navy is averaging just yards per game, which ranks 14th in the country and is the lowest rushing average for Navy in the triple option era. NAVY PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN THE AAC WEST Houston was selected as the favorite to repeat as the American Athletic Conference champion as the Cougars were the overwhelming choice in the league s 2016 preseason media poll. The Cougars received 27 of a possible 30 votes to win the league title in the preseason balloting. Additionally, Houston was the unanimous pick to win The American s West Division crown, as the Cougars finished with 180 points. USF was the media s choice in the East Division as the Bulls received 15 first-place votes and 164 points. USF received two votes as the favorite for the conference title. Temple received nine first-place votes in the East Division race and was tabbed by one voter as the league favorite. Cincinnati had six first-place votes in the East Division balloting. Houston finished the 2015 season with a 13-1 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the conference play as the Cougars tied for the West Division title before winning the first American Athletic Conference Football Championship. Tom Herman s squad capped the season by topping Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl to finish the year ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Houston returns 11 starters from last year, including quarterback Greg Ward Jr., who rushed for 21 touchdowns and threw 17 TD passes and is one of seven returning Maxwell Award semifinalists from last year. Navy was picked second in the West Division with 128 points after the Midshipmen set a school record with 11 wins in the 2015 season. Navy went 11-2 last year and tied Houston for the West Division title with a 7-1 conference record in its first year in The American. The Midshipmen, who capped the year with a win against Pitt in the Military Bowl, return six starters from a defense that held 10 of its 13 opponents to 21 points or fewer in HEISMAN WINNER, NAISMITH WINNER, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Navy is one of just two schools to produce a President of the United States (Jimmy Carter), a Hesiman Trophy winner (Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach) and a Naismith Award winner (David Robinson). The other school to match that feat is Michigan, who produced President Gerald Ford, Heisman winners Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson and Naismith Award winner Trey Burke. JASPER CHOSEN FOR NCAA CHAMPION FORUM Nine minority football coaches, including Navy offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper, were selected to participate in the 2016 NCAA Champion Forum, a unique professional development opportunity where attendees gain a realistic view of the role of a successful college head football coach and the preparation necessary to become one. The participants came together June in Dallas in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention. The Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences host the program and select the attendees rising minority coaches in college football who will lead the next generation of head coaches. NCAA leadership development coordinates the program logistics and leads the curriculum development. The NCAA leadership development department provides professional and personal development for the entire Association, including student-athletes, coaches and administrators, through accessible resources, strategic partnerships and annual customized programming at little or no cost to the membership AAC WEST DIVISION CO-CHAMPIONS After 134 years playing as an Independent, Navy finished its first year in a conference as the American Athletic Conference West Division Co-Champions with Houston. The Mids finished 7-1 in the AAC with victories over East Carolina, Connecticut, Tulane, USF, Memphis, SMU and Tulsa. Navy s only loss was to Houston, while Houston s only loss was to UConn. GLADCHUK RECIPIENT OF 2016 TONER AWARD United States Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk was named the 2016 recipient of the NFF John L. Toner Award announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. Presented annually by the NFF, the Toner Award recognizes an athletics director who has demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football. Since taking over as Navy s Athletics Director in 2001, Chet has overseen a renaissance of the Naval Academy athletic program, said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. His accomplishments place him at the forefront of his profession and make him truly worthy of this prestigious honor. Gladchuk will be honored at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. He will accept his award alongside the recipients of the other NFF Major Awards, including Chancellor of the University of Texas System and retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral William H. McRaven (NFF Distinguished American Award), College Football Hall of Fame coach and AFCA Executive Director Emeritus Grant Teaff (NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award), the Voice of the Washington Huskies Bob Rondeau (NFF Chris Schenkel Award for excellence in broadcasting), and the yet-to-be announced recipients of the NFF Gold Medal and the NFF Legacy Awards.

Under Armour, the leading sports performance and innovation brand, will outfit all of the Navy s 33 men s and women s varsity athletic teams beginning in the season. The comprehensive partnership also includes marketing and promotional opportunities. Under Armour has been a consistent and dedicated supporter of the military through its corporate UA Freedom initiative and long-standing association with organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project. Through an intercollegiate athletic program that is one of the largest in the country, and a highly organized club sports program and intramural sports program, each midshipman, male and female, is afforded the opportunity to compete in athletics at a level commensurate with his or her abilities. The emphasis on physical fitness is borne out in the first line of the mission of the Naval Academy: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically. The NAAA arranges the scheduling of over 500 contests in 10 conference affiliations for intercollegiate athletics, including the 33 varsity sports and 12 plebe/junior varsity teams, provides coaching staffs, all operational expenses and equipment, and maintains a fully staffed central office to handle the administrative details of the intercollegiate and club sports athletic programs. In addition, it makes all arrangements for approximately 1500 student-athletes who are members of the Navy sports teams for competition either in Annapolis or when they go on the road.
