SETTING THE STAGE Service Academy rivals Navy and Air Force will meet for the 49th time on the gridiron when the two battle one another on Saturday at Falcon Stadium (46,692) in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM (ET), 1:30 PM in Colorado Springs. Air Force leads the all-time series, 28-20, however the Mids have won 10 of the last 13 games including a victory last year in Annapolis. The winner of the Navy-Air Force game has won the Commander-In-Chief s Trophy in each of the last 19 years (1996 was the last time that did not happen). This year marks the first time both Navy and Air Force enter their match-up undefeated. Air Force has won two of the last three games played in Colorado Springs, including a victory in In 2012, Navy defeated Air Force at Falcon Stadium in overtime, Overall, Air Force is 16-7 all-time against Navy in Colorado Springs. Navy is looking to start 4-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1978 and 79. Last year, the Mids started 4-0 before losing at Notre Dame. Navy started 6-0 in 1979 and 7-0 in Navy has won 19 consecutive games against unranked opponents, which is the fourth-longest streak in the country. Only Alabama (62), Clemson (43) and Ohio State (21) own longer winning streaks. The Navy-Air Force game is being spotlighted by the Joe Moore Award, which highlights outstanding offensive line play, as one of the Big Ugly Spotlight Games of the Week. Niumatalolo is in his ninth year at the Naval Academy, which ties him with George Welsh and Eddie Erdelatz as the longest tenured football coach in Navy history. Navy received 14 voting points in this week s Amway / USA Today Coaches Poll, but were shut out of the Associated Press Poll for the third straight week. Air Force received four votes in the coaches poll. Saturday s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network with Carter Blackburn, Aaron Taylor and Jenny Dell on the call. Keith Mills will host a two-hour Navy Insider special on WBAL Radio (1090 AM) starting at 12:30 PM. The Navy Football Tailgate Show on WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM will air at 1:30 PM. The Navy Football Pregame Show with Pete Medhurst, Omar Nelson, Joe Miller and Tim Murray will get underway at 2:30 PM, followed by game action beginning at 3:00 PM on the Navy Radio Network. Following the contest, Medhurst, Nelson, Miller and Murray will recap the day s events in a 30-minute postgame show. SCOUTING AIR FORCE The Falcons enter Saturday s contest against the Mids with a 3-0 mark, earning victories over Abilene Christian (37-21), Georgia State (48-14) and Utah State (27-20). Air Force is a veteran team with seven senior starters on offense and 10 senior starters on defense. The Falcons are led by senior quarterback Nate Romine, who has rushed for 153 yards on 41 carries and has thrown for 364 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-32 passing. He has yet to throw an interception. Senior tailback Jacobi Owens has rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries to lead the Falcons rushing attack, while senior fullback D.J. Johnson has rushed for 198 yards on 52 carries. Air Force s leading receiver is senior Jalen Robinette, who has four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons are ranked second nationally in rushing offense (359.3 yds/gm), 123rd in passing offense (127.0 yds/gm), 29th in total offense (486.3 yds/gm) and 42nd in scoring offense (37.3 pts/gm). Grant Ross leads the defense with 17 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss and an interception, while Ryan Watson has 15 tackles and an impressive five sacks on the year. The Falcons rank second nationally against the run (51.7 yds/gm), 95th against the pass (257.7 yds/gm), 21st in total defense (309.3 yds/gm) and 27th in scoring defense (18.3 pts/gm). MIDS TOUGH AGAINST UNRANKED OPPONENTS Navy has won 19 straight games against unranked opponents, which is the fourth-longest streak in the country. Navy s last loss to an unranked opponent came on Oct. 4, 2014, when the Mids lost at Air Force, Since that loss, Navy has produced a 19-3 (.864) record with its three losses coming against ranked opponents Houston and Notre Dame (twice). The Mids defeated a ranked Memphis squad in that streak, as well. 3 SERVICE ACADEMY DOMINANCE Navy has been the dominant Service Academy over the last decade plus, winning 24 of the last 27 meetings (.888) against Air Force and Army dating back to the 2002 Army-Navy game. The Mids have posted an overal record of (.671) since 2003, won 10 CIC Trophies in the last 13 years and have gone to 12 bowl games in the last 13 years. Navy has dominated of late, winning the trophy 10 of the last 13 years and winning 24 of the last 27 Service Academy games against Air Force and Army West Point in the process. Navy has won the trophy a total of 14 times: 1973, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1981, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and When there is no clear-cut winner, the trophy remains with the winner of the previous year s competition. The three-sided trophy stands two-and-a-half-feet tall and is engraved with the academy seals. Reproductions of the three mascots the Army West Point Mule, the Navy Goat and the Air Force Falcon are ensconced on the respective sides of this bauble. The trophy is sponsored by the West Point Association of Graduates, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and the Air Force Association of Graduates. The year in which the trophy is won is engraved on a plate gracing the respective academy s side of the trophy. 11 FOR 11 Navy has had 11 consecutive senior classes go undefeated against Army West Point. CONTINUITY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS Navy has lost just five coaches in the nine years Ken Niumatalolo has been the head coach (three changed jobs, two retired). Six of Navy s coaches (five assistants and Niumatalolo) have been in Annapolis for at least 10 years, giving Navy, along with Air Force, the most coaches in the country that have been at the same school for 10 years or more. Defensive coordinator Dale Pehrson is in his 21st year at Navy, Niumatalolo is in his 19th year, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper is in his 17th year, slot backs coach and special teams coordinator Danny O Rourke is in his 15th year, offensive line coach Chris Culton is in his 14th year and outside linebackers coach Jusin Davis is in his 10th year. Navy is one of just two schools to have the same offensive staff back for a sixth straight year. All players and assistant coaches will also be available at that time. Coach Niumatalolo will be available for phone interviews Monday-Thursday from 2:00-3:00 pm. All player phone interviews must be arranged through Scott Strasemeier at least one day in advance. Players will conduct phone interviews during the day (Tuesday- Thursday) as their class schedule permits and will also be available after practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. AMERICAN ATHLETIC TELECONFERENCE The American Athletic Conference will coordinate a weekly teleconference of the league s 12 head football coaches beginning Monday, Aug. 29, and continuing each Monday (including holidays and byes) through Nov. 21. Each coach will be available for 10 minutes. WORTH S LATE TD RUN HELPS NAVY BEAT TULANE (AP) - A week after Navy quarterback Will Worth scored the winning touchdown on a late, 1-yard run against Connecticut in his first start, he did the same thing in a American Athletic Conference victory against Tulane two weeks ago. The winner against Connecticut came with 3:08 left in a victory and the winner against Tulane came with 2:57 left, capping a performance in which he had 113 yards rushing on 25 carries. Worth had eight carries for 58 yards on the winning 10-play, 72-yard drive. He followed that TD run by throwing a two-point conversion pass to Toneo Gulley for a lead. Tulane s Andrew DiRocco missed wide left on a 45-yard field goal attempt with 7:39 left in the game, setting up Navy s winning drive. After a scoreless first quarter, Navy drove 94 yards on 15 plays and took a 7-0 lead on Chris High s 6-yard touchdown run. The 15 plays were the most by the Midshipmen on a possession this season. Tulane responded with an 8-play (all runs), 75-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown from Josh Rounds. He had five carries for 52 yards on the drive. Shawn White had 4-yard touchdown run, but Bennett Moehring missed the extra point and Navy led The Green Wave responded with a 76-yard drive that ended with 36-yard touchdown run by Dontrell Hilliard with 19 seconds left in the third quarter. TOUGH SCHEDULE AHEAD Navy s remaining nine opponents have a combined record of (.706) on the year with eight of the nine teams sporting at least a.500 record. Meanwhile, three of the nine remaining opponents are undefeated: Air Force (3-0), #6/#7 Houston (4-0) and Memphis (3-0). The overall combined record of Navy s opponents this year is (.667), with 11 of the 12 at.500 or better. WHERE THERE S A WILL, THERE S A WAY In his first two career starts, senior quarterback Will Worth has led Navy on fourth-quarter drives to give the Mids a come-from-behind win. Against UConn, Navy trailed with 4:57 left and Worth, set up by a 26-yard punt return by Calvin Cass Jr., drove the Mids 17 yards in four plays and scored the game-winning touchdown from one-yard out to give Navy a lead with 3:08 left. Navy held on to win after the Mids defense made a goal-line stand in the final seconds. Against Tulane, Navy trailed with 7:39 remaining and Worth led the Mids on a 10-play, 72-yard drive over 4:48 and capped it himself with a one-yard TD run with 2:57 left to give Navy a lead. Worth then hit a wide open Toneo Gulley in the flat for the key two-point conversion and the Mids held on for the win. Worth is the first Navy QB to lead the Mids to comeback victories in the fourth quarter in back-to-back games since Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada did it against Air Force and Pitt in Worth was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll in each of the last two weeks. THE POWER 6 The American Athletic Conference is (.700) against non-conference opponents, which is the fourth-best mark among conferences. NIUMATALOLO SPELLS SUCCESS Navy football coach Ken Niumatalolo has been on the the Mids sideline as either an assistant or head coach for 19 of the last 22 years ( and as an assistant, 2008-current as the head coach). Over those 19 years, Navy has compiled a record (.613), won 10 Commander-In-Chief s Trophies, gone to 12 bowl games and won six bowl games. 5 MORE ON NIUMATALOLO NIUMATALOLO NAVY S ALL-TIME WINS LEADER Ninth-year head coach Ken Niumatalolo has led the Midshipmen to a (.657) record and is the program s all-time winningest coach. He is 8-0 all-time against Navy s biggest rival, Army West Point, and is the first head coach in the history of the Army-Navy game to win his first eight games against the rival service academy. His eight wins against the Black Knights are tied for the most in Army-Navy history with College Football Hall of Fame Coach Army West Point s Earl Blaik, who was just (.500) from against Navy. TILLMAN WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE BEST RECEIVERS IN SCHOOL HISTORY Senior wide receiver Jamir Tillman had a huge 2015 season for the Mids with 29 catches for 597 yards and five touchdowns, including 14 catches for 402 yards (28.7 yards per catch) and four touchdowns over the last five games. Tillman was the first Navy player in school history to catch a touchdown pass in four consecutive games (SMU, Tulsa, Houston, Army West Point) and was the first Navy player with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games since He averaged 20.6 yards per reception in 2015 which was the the ninth-best average in the country. Being elected team captain at the Naval Academy is one of the highest honors you can receive at an institution that prides itself on producing great leaders, said Niumatalolo. Toneo and Daniel are not only outstanding football players, but they are great leaders in the locker room and in Bancroft Hall and I have no doubt that they will be great captains for us. Gulley has played in 35 of Navy s 39 games over his career, earning three varsity letters. He has been a key player for the Mids not only on offense as a runner and blocker, but on special teams as both a kick returner and on kick coverage. Last year, he played in 12 of 13 games carrying the ball 12 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while catching two passes for 30 yards. He has been in on 14 tackles during his career and has returned 12 kickoffs. Gonzales has started 24 of Navy s last 26 games at linebacker and has recorded 151 career tackles, including five tackles for a loss and four interceptions. He has played great in Service Academy games, contributing 38 tackles in four appearances. Last year, Gonzales recorded 65 tackles, four tackles for a loss, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble for a Navy team that finished 11-2 on the year. The Mids did not force any turnovers against Tulane. The Mids have recovered three fumbles this year and have yet to pick off a pass. Freshman defensive back Alohi Gilman has recovered two of those fumbles, which is tied for the fith most in the country. One of those two fumble recoveries (against UConn) he caused and returned it for a touchdown. NEVER GIVE IN The Navy defense has allowed just seven touchdowns on the last 26 turnovers by the Navy offense dating back to the 2014 season. KEEP THE BALL, WIN THE GAME Navy is 23-1 (.958) over the last five years when winning the turnover battle and (.516) when tying or losing the turnover battle. GM 4 NAVY AT AIR FORCE: 7 GETTING TO THE QUARTERBACK The Navy defense recorded 22 sacks in 2015 after posting just eight sacks in The 22 sacks are the most by a Navy team since 2009 when the Mids recorded 22 sacks in 14 games. ALOHI MEANS GOODBYE Freshman Alohi Gilman, who hails from the same hometown as head coach Ken Niumatalolo (Laie, Hawai i) had an incredible game against UConn in what was the first start of his career. Gilman earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after he recorded 10 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered two fumbles and returned one of those fumbles two yards for a touchdown in Navy s victory. Gilman is currently tied for fourth on the team in tackles with 17. ROMINE A THREAT Senior slot back Dishan Romine became a threat as a kick returner last fall, averaging 27.3 yards per return on his 24 returns with a long of 90 yards against Tulsa. He was ranked 11th in the country in kickoff returns last year. As a team, the Mids ranked 25th, averaging yards per return. Romine s 27.3 yards per kick return was the sixth-best average for a single season in school history and his career kickoff return average of 26.5 (28 returns for 743 yards) ranks third best. Pretlow fumbled the ball and Navy s Taylor Heflin recovered it at the Fordham seven-yard line. Quarterback Tago Smith scored on the next play. Perry, who was listed fourth on the depth chart at quarterback, had been sick earlier in the week and missed practice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He felt better on Thursday and was allowed to play in the JV game on Friday, but the coaches decided not to dress him for the game on Saturday. Perry s services, howerver, were needed when starter Tago Smith went down with an injury. The third-string quarterback, Zach Abey, was unavailable and all of a sudden Navy needed a backup quarterback. Perry was summoned out of the crowd by the coaches, while managers went back to Ricketts Hall to get his uniform. Perry entered the game with 38 seconds left in the third quarter and led Navy on a 90-yard drive that resulted in a field goal. He played the rest of the game.

9 GM 4 NAVY AT AIR FORCE: 9 JASPER CHOSEN FOR NCAA CHAMPION FORUM Nine minority football coaches, including Navy offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper, were selected to participate in the 2016 NCAA Champion Forum, a unique professional development opportunity where attendees gain a realistic view of the role of a successful college head football coach and the preparation necessary to become one. The participants came together June in Dallas in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention. The Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences host the program and select the attendees rising minority coaches in college football who will lead the next generation of head coaches. NCAA leadership development coordinates the program logistics and leads the curriculum development. The NCAA leadership development department provides professional and personal development for the entire Association, including student-athletes, coaches and administrators, through accessible resources, strategic partnerships and annual customized programming at little or no cost to the membership. NAVY PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN THE AAC WEST Houston was selected as the favorite to repeat as the American Athletic Conference champion as the Cougars were the overwhelming choice in the league s 2016 preseason media poll. The Cougars received 27 of a possible 30 votes to win the league title in the preseason balloting. Additionally, Houston was the unanimous pick to win The American s West Division crown, as the Cougars finished with 180 points. USF was the media s choice in the East Division as the Bulls received 15 first-place votes and 164 points. USF received two votes as the favorite for the conference title. Temple received nine first-place votes in the East Division race and was tabbed by one voter as the league favorite. Cincinnati had six first-place votes in the East Division balloting. Houston finished the 2015 season with a 13-1 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the conference play as the Cougars tied for the West Division title before winning the first American Athletic Conference Football Championship. Tom Herman s squad capped the season by topping Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl to finish the year ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Houston returns 11 starters from last year, including quarterback Greg Ward Jr., who rushed for 21 touchdowns and threw 17 TD passes and is one of seven returning Maxwell Award semifinalists from last year. Navy was picked second in the West Division with 128 points after the Midshipmen set a school record with 11 wins in the 2015 season. Navy went 11-2 last year and tied Houston for the West Division title with a 7-1 conference record in its first year in The American. Michigan 2015 AAC WEST DIVISION CO-CHAMPIONS After 134 years playing as an Independent, Navy finished its first year in a conference as the American Athletic Conference West Division Co-Champions with Houston. The Mids finished 7-1 in the AAC with victories over East Carolina, Connecticut, Tulane, USF, Memphis, SMU and Tulsa. Navy s only loss was to Houston, while Houston s only loss was to UConn. GLADCHUK RECIPIENT OF 2016 TONER AWARD United States Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk was named the 2016 recipient of the NFF John L. Toner Award announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. Presented annually by the NFF, the Toner Award recognizes an athletics director who has demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football. Since taking over as Navy s Athletics Director in 2001, Chet has overseen a renaissance of the Naval Academy athletic program, said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. His leadership has helped create one of the most successful periods in school history, including great success by the football team. His accomplishments place him at the forefront of his profession and make him truly worthy of this prestigious honor. Gladchuk will be honored at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. He will accept his award alongside the recipients of the other NFF Major Awards, including Chancellor of the University of Texas System and retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral William H. McRaven (NFF Distinguished American Award), College Football Hall of Fame coach and AFCA Executive Director Emeritus Grant Teaff (NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award), the Voice of the Washington Huskies Bob Rondeau (NFF Chris Schenkel Award for excellence in broadcasting), and the yet-to-be announced recipients of the NFF Gold Medal and the NFF Legacy Awards. NAVY AND UNDER ARMOUR FORM MULTIYEAR PARTNERSHIP The Naval Academy Athletic Association and Under Armour, Inc. announced a multiyear partnership in 2014 that designates Under Armour as the official outfitter of Navy s varsity intercollegiate athletic program. Under Armour, the leading sports performance and innovation brand, will outfit all of the Navy s 33 men s and women s varsity athletic teams beginning in the season. The comprehensive partnership also includes marketing and promotional opportunities. Under Armour has been a consistent and dedicated supporter of the military through its corporate UA Freedom initiative and long-standing association with organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project. Through an intercollegiate athletic program that is one of the largest in the country, and a highly organized club sports program and intramural sports program, each midshipman, male and female, is afforded the opportunity to compete in athletics at a level commensurate with his or her abilities. The emphasis on physical fitness is borne out in the first line of the mission of the Naval Academy: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically. The NAAA arranges the scheduling of over 500 contests in 10 conference affiliations for intercollegiate athletics, including the 33 varsity sports and 12 plebe/junior varsity teams, provides coaching staffs, all operational expenses and equipment, and maintains a fully staffed central office to handle the administrative details of the intercollegiate and club sports athletic programs.
