Defense Leads The Way In 24-6 Victory Over MIddle Tennessee In The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl Fort Worth, Texas (AP) - Keenan Reynolds joined the 30-touchdown rushing club in Navy s 24-6 victory over Middle Tennessee in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. Reynolds had a three-yard score to cap the opening drive for Navy (9-4) and added a one-yarder in the fourth quarter. Already holding the NCAA record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, Reynolds upped his total to 31 to match Colorado State running back Kapri Bibbs, also a sophomore, for the national lead this season. The only players with more rushing TDs in a season were Barry Sanders (37) with Oklahoma State and Wisconsin s Montee Ball (33). Navy piled up 366 yards rushing and finished its season with five straight victories. The Blue Raiders (8-5) were held to a season low in points. They had finished the regular season with a fivegame winning streak, averaging nearly 43 points a game in that stretch - since a 34-7 loss on Oct. 12 at North Texas. Reynolds lost two fumbles, matching his total during the regular season, but Middle Tennessee failed to convert into points on either of the miscues. Both fumbles were recovered by linebacker T.T. Barber, Middle Tennessee s MVP, after Navy drove inside the 20. Down 10-6 at halftime, the Blue Raiders moved to the Navy seven on the opening drive of the second half. They went for it on fourth down instead of trying a short field goal, but fullback Corey Carmichael managed only a yard before getting taken down by Travis Bridges and George Jamison, who also had an interception. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played in 2015, will be carried either on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday. American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pinnacle of college football s postseason structure, both in the coming season and beyond. In , the league champion will receive an automatic bid for the final edition of the Bowl Championship Series, including a spot in the VIZIO National Championship Game if it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings. Moving forward, The American champion would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. The Mids kicked off the trend in 2002 when they finished third in the country in rushing, averaging yds/gm. In 2003, Navy led the nation averaging a then school-record yds/gm. That is the fifth-best rushing average for a team over the last 11 years. In 2005, Navy led the country in rushing for the second time in three years, averaging yds/gm. The yds/gm is the seventh-best rushing average by a team in the last 11 years. Navy finished the 2006 campaign averaging a nation s-best and then school-record yds/gm. That is the fourthbest rushing average by a team in the last 11 years. The Mids rushed for a school-record yds/gm in 2007, becoming the first team in NCAA history to lead the nation in rushing three-consecutive years. The yards rushing is the second-best rushing average by a team in the last 10 years. Only the 2000 Nebraska team (349.3) rushed for more over that time period. The yards per game are the most yards rushing by a FBS team since Nebraska averaged yds/gm in In 2008, Navy led the country in rushing for an unprecedented fourth-straight year, averaging yds/gm. The Mids finished No. 2 in the country in 2013, averaging yards per game. It s the best rushing average by a Navy team since 2007 when that team rushed for a schoolrecord yards per game. Notre Dame and South Alabama were the only two teams this year to score a touchdown in the first quarter against the Navy defense. Getting The Fullbacks Going The Mids got the fullbacks going in the Toledo game as junior Noah Copeland (153 yds) and sophomore Chris Swain (62 yds) combined for 215 yards on 41 carries. The previous high out of the fullback position came against Duke when the fullbacks rushed for 87 yards on 20 carries. Copeland had the best game of his career in the Mids loss to the Rockets, finishing with a career-high 153 yards rushing. It was his first 100-yard day of the year and third of his career. His previous high was 126 yards set last year against VMI. Copeland is Navy s first back to rush for 150 yards since Gee Gee Greene rushed for 150 yards in a loss at Troy last year and it s the most yards rushing by a Navy player since Keenan Reynolds rushed for 159 yards last year against Florida Atlantic. Copeland also had his first-career touchdown reception against Toledo, catching a 20-yard pass from Reynolds. Unfortunately, Copeland was injured in the Pittsburgh game and has not returned. He is expected to play in the Army-Navy game. Junior Quinton Singleton emerged as a threat against Pitt, rushing for 27 yards and a touchdown on five carries in the fourth quarter. The fullbacks had another great game against Notre Dame as Swain (16-85, 1 TD) and Singleton (16-77) combined for 32 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown while consistently running over Notre Dame defenders. Singleton had the best game of his career against Hawai i, rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Rookie Shawn White added his name to the scoring column in the Mids win over South Alabama, bullying his way in from the seven. Singleton (4-61) and Copeland (5-54, 1 TD) both had big days in Navy s 34-7 rout of Army. All told, the fullbacks rushed for 1,187 yards and nine touchdowns on 256 carries (4.6 ypc). The fullbacks fumbled once all year (Swain against Notre Dame) and they did not lose a fumble. Navy still must have success running the football to make the passing game effective and in games where it is forced to throw, it has not had as much success. Dating back to 2003, Navy is 18-1 (.947) when throwing the ball 0-5 times in a game and (.770) when throwing the ball 6-10 times. Mids Adopt 12-Year Old Mathias Giordano The Navy football team adopted 12-year old-mathias Giordano from Leesburg, Va. into the Navy Football Brotherhood this fall. Giordano, who is battling Sarcoma cancer, is a huge Navy football fan and was recently introduced to the team by Lt. Jordan Fogler, who is a family friend of the Giordano s and an admissions counselor at the Naval Academy. Fogler reached out to the Navy football staff to see if Giordano could get a tour, but instead he got much more. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo welcomed Giordano with open arms by personally taking he and his family on a tour of Ricketts Hall and introducing him to all of the coaches. Giordano then got a chance to meet some of the players on the team including sophomore fullback Chris Swain, senior wide receiver and co-captain Matt Aiken, junior defensive end Aaron Davis, junior fullback Quinton Singleton, junior quarterback John Hendrick, junior safety George Jamison and sophomore quarterback Keenan Reynolds. The players autographed a scheduled poster for Giordano and took photos with him. Before Giordano left for the day, Coach Niumatalolo presented him with an autographed helmet and words of encouragement letting him know that he and his family are in his prayers. In addition, Niumatalolo adopted Giordano into the Navy Football Brotherhood and offered him tickets to every home football game. Giordano was at the Delaware game and was in the locker room with the team after the game. One of Navy s All-Time Great Quarterbacks Returns As Commandant Of Midshipmen Former Navy quarterback Capt.
