Navy Tops South Alabama To Become Bowl eligible (AP) - Darius Staten made his final home appearance a memorable one with a career-high 127 yards on seven carries with a touchdown to lead Navy to a victory over South Alabama. The Mids, who scored 22 consecutive points in the second half, finished undefeated at home for the first time since South Alabama s Ross Metheny completed 18 of 27 passes for 160 yards with two touchdown passes to Shavarez Smith, who had five receptions for 65 yards. Brandon Bridge replaced Metheny at quarterback and put together a 20-play, 89-yard drive that was stalled at the Navy 4 when Kendall Houston was stuffed by Cody Peterson on fourth-and-2 with 11:12 left in the game. Navy then put the game away on the next possession on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Keenan Reynolds to Matt Aiken. Navy backup quarterback Tago Smith added another 24-yard scoring run with 2:17 left for the lead. The Mids racked up 519 total yards, with 351 coming from the rushing attack. Navy opened an early 3-0 lead on its first possession with a 37-yard field goal by Nick Sloan. The Jaguars then responded with a 14-play, 78-yard scoring drive, capped by a 4-yard pass from Metheny to Smith. Staten then gave Navy a 10-7 lead with 13:24 left in the half with a 17-yard touchdown run. After being helped by a roughing the passer penalty on Navy s Chris Johnson, South Alabama went ahead again when Metheny and Smith teamed up for a 22-yard touchdown. The shootout continued on the next possession as Navy scored again on a 7-yard run by Shawn White, who 2013 Navy Football Schedule Record: 6-4 Home: 5-0 Away: 1-4 Neutral: 0-0 carried three defenders into the end zone. It was Miller s seventh lost fumble in four games and it was the third straight game where he lost a fumble in the red zone in the first quarter. The Navy defense was tough all day, holding the Spartans to 388 yards, including just 108 yards on the ground on 42 carries. Lopez kicked a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter, a 19-yard field goal in the third quarter and 32 and 43-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to provide the margin of victory. One of his four losses this year was when he was injured in the second quarter at Western Kentucky and left with a 7-3 lead. The Mids would go on to lose that game Reynolds owns wins over Central Michigan, Indiana (2x), East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Texas State, Delaware, Army, Air Force, Pitt, Hawai i and South Alabama. His losses have come at the hands of Troy, Arizona State, Western Kentucky (was knocked out in the second quarter of that game), Duke, Toledo and Notre Dame. He has thrown for at least one touchdown and ran for at least one touchdown in five consecutive games. Over that five-game span, he has completed 33 of his 64 pass attempts for 515 yards and five touchdowns and one interception. Additionally, he has rushed for 468 yards and 12 touchdowns on 117 carries. Reynolds is third in the country in scoring per game (11.4), second in rushing touchdowns (19) and 17th in points responsible for per game (15.8). He is 46th overall and third among quarterbacks in rushing yards per game (88.4). His 19 rushing touchdowns this year are the third most in school history for a single season. He trails second-place Chris McCoy, who ran for 20 touchdowns in 1997, by just one. He also needs just one touchdown to become only the 10th quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 20 touchdowns in a season and he would be tied for sixth all-time with Chris McCoy (Navy), Eric Crouch (Nebraska), Tevin Washington (Georgia Tech) and Cam Newton (Auburn). His 29 career rushing touchdowns are the fifth most in school history and just two behind fourth-place Napoleon McCallum (31 from ). He needs 116 yards rushing and 18 yards passing to reach the 1,000-yard mark and become just the fourth quarterback in school history to rush and throw for more than 1,000 yards in the same season. The other players to accomplish this feat are Ricky Dobbs (2009), Craig Candeto (2003) and Chris McCoy (1997). He has been responsible for 156 points on the year (19 rushing TDs, 7 passing TDs), which is just six points behind Ricky Dobbs for fifth all-time at Navy for a single season. Reynolds had a great game in the 2013 season opener at Indiana, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries and completing two of his four pass attempts for 71 yards in Navy s victory over the Hoosiers. Reynolds accomplished all that despite not practicing for almost two full weeks due to injury. Reynolds came back in week two against Delaware and had his third-career game of rushing and throwing for over 100 yards as he finished with 109 yards rushing and a career-high 233 yards and two touchdowns passing as the Navy offense piled up 51 points and 589 yards of total offense. His 233 yards were the most by a Navy quarterback since 2000 and he became the first Navy player to throw for over 200 yards and rush for over 100 yards since Craig Candeto in Reynolds led Navy to a victory over Air Force, rushing for 126 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries while throwing for 54 yards. Reynolds rallied the Mids for 17 fourth-quarter points in Navy s upset over Pitt. He finished the day with 93 yards rushing and one touchdown on 21 carries and 105 yards passing and one touchdown on 18 pass attempts. Reynolds was outstanding in Navy s loss at No. 25 Notre Dame, rushing for 55 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, while completing six of his nine pass attempts for 88 yards and one touchdown while executing the triple option almost flawlessly. He had the best game of his career against Hawai i, rushing for a career-high 226 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries and completing four of his eight passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. It was the third-most rushing yards by a quarterback in school history and the four rushing touchdowns are tied for the third most in school history. Against South Alabama, Reynolds rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He completed 10 of his 17 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown as he led Navy to a victory over the Jaguars as the Mids became bowl eligible. In 2012, Reynolds became the first Navy quarterback to win his first four career starts since senior Bob Powers, who won his first six career starts in He became the first freshman to start at quarterback for Navy since Jim Kubiak started five games in 1991, when he guided the Midshipmen to a victory over Central Michigan NAVY FOOTBALL Game NOTES: 5 Reynolds was just the third freshman in program history to start at quarterback, joining Kubiak and Alton Grizzard, who started seven games at quarterback in In his first career start against Central Michigan, Reynolds completed six of his 11 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 59 yards in leading Navy to a victory. Reynolds won his second start, rallying Navy to a victory over Indiana. He rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and completed eight of 13 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. His four-yard TD pass to junior Matt Aiken with 2:02 left gave Navy the win. Reynolds improved to 3-0 as a starter with a nearly flawless performance against East Carolina as Navy rolled over the Pirates, Reynolds led the Mids to touchdowns on seven of his eight drives and totaled 132 yards of total offense and five touchdowns (3 rushing, 2 passing). Reynolds won his fourth straight start with a win over Florida Atlantic. He rushed for a career-high 159 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries and completed eight of his 15 passes for a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns. Against Army, Reynolds led Navy on a fourth quarter seven-play, 80-yard drive that he capped himself with an eight-yard touchdown run to give Navy a victory. Reynolds was held to 43 yards rushing, but scored the game-winning touchdown and completed 10 of 17 passes for 130 yards. He became the first player in series history to be named the game s MVP as a freshman. He has had just three touchbacks and eight of his punts have been fair caught. The 42.3 yard average is the fifth best average in school history. Last year, Beltran averaged 43.6 yards per punt on his 44 punts, which stands as the third-best single-season average in school history. He would have finished 18th in the country in punting if he had enough punts to qualify (3.6 punts/gm). Fifteen of Beltran s 44 punts were fair caught and 18 downed inside the 20. He had 11 punts last year of 50 yards or more. He kicked a career-long 63-yarder against Notre Dame in the 2012 season-opener. Beltran averaged 37.5 yards per punt as a freshman. There are seven schools that will be an Independent in 2013: Army, Navy, Notre Dame, BYU, Old Dominion, New Mexico State and Idaho. Mids want To Pass On Their Own Terms With Keenan Reynolds at quarterback, the Mids have wanted to go to the air more than they have in the past as Navy has not had a quarterback, outside of Ricky Dobbs, who can throw it as well as Reynolds in the triple option era. With that being said, the Mids still want to pass on their own terms and not be forced to throw when the defense is expecting it. Navy still must have success running the football to make the passing game effective and in games where it is forced to throw, it has not had as much success. Dating back to 2003, Navy is 18-1 (.947) when throwing the ball 0-5 times in a game and (.759) when throwing the ball 6-10 times. As a whole, the Mids are (.805) when throwing the ball 10 or fewer times. Conversely, Navy is (.443) when throwing the ball 11 times or more, including a 7-13 (.350) mark when throwing the ball 16 times or more. With Keenan Reynolds as the starting quarterback, the Mids are 5-1 (.833) when throwing it 0-10 times and 7-5 (.583) when throwing it 11 or more times. Cody and Matt are great leaders on and off the field and there is no question in my mind that they will do a great job. They both work extremely hard and will set an example for the entire team. Peterson played in all 13 games last fall, starting the final eight at inside linebacker. He finished with 67 tackles, two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. Peterson recorded 10 tackles in Navy s overtime victory over Air Force and a career-high 14 tackles against Army. 11 Mids Adopt 12-Year Old Mathias Giordano The Navy football team adopted 12-year old-mathias Giordano from Leesburg, Va. into the Navy Football Brotherhood this fall. Giordano, who is battling Sarcoma cancer, is a huge Navy football fan and was recently introduced to the team by Lt. Jordan Fogler, who is a family friend of the Giordano s and an admissions counselor at the Naval Academy. Fogler reached out to the Navy football staff to see if Giordano could get a tour, but instead he got much more. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo welcomed Giordano with open arms by personally taking he and his family on a tour of Ricketts Hall and introducing him to all of the coaches. Giordano then got a chance to meet some of the players on the team including sophomore fullback Chris Swain, senior wide receiver and co-captain Matt Aiken, junior defensive end Aaron Davis, junior fullback Quinton Singleton, junior quarterback John Hendrick, junior safety George Jamison and sophomore quarterback Keenan Reynolds. The players autographed a scheduled poster for Giordano and took photos with him. Before Giordano left for the day, Coach Niumatalolo presented him with an autographed helmet and words of encouragement letting him know that he and his family are in his prayers. In addition, Niumatalolo adopted Giordano into the Navy Football Brotherhood and offered him tickets to every home football game. Giordano was at the Delaware game and was in the locker room with the team after the game. One of Navy s All-Time Great Quarterbacks Returns As Commandant Of Midshipmen Former Navy quarterback Capt. Navy, Notre Dame Extend Series Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk and Notre Dame Director of Athletics and Vice President Jack Swarbrick announced last fall that Navy s football series with Notre Dame, which is the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in college football, has been extended to 2026, which will be the centennial year for the series. The Irish and Mids will meet in South Bend on odd years, while on even years the game will be Navy s home game, customarily played at regional NFL venues. The two schools, which have played every year since 1926, will meet for the 86th time on Sept. 1 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. The 2014 Navy-Notre Dame game will be played on Nov. 1 at FedExField in Landover, Md. Montalvo Returns To The Academy Freshman quarterback Ralph Montalvo is enrolled in classes this fall after being involved in a serious automobile accident last year on Thanksgiving night while home in Miami on leave. Montalvo was the passenger in a single-vehicle accident and was in critical condition at Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami. He was in a medically induced coma for 16 days, because of the trauma to his brain and then spent another week drifting in a pharmaceutical fog. Montalvo would spend a total of 45 days in the hospital and then several months going for rehabilitation up to five hours a day, the last four months at a VA hospital in Richmond, Va. Montalvo had a remarkable recovery and returned to the Naval Academy on July 2. He is a freshman academically and will be held out of contact this year. He still has three years of athletic eligibility remaining (he played in every JV game last fall). Montalvo is a 2011 graduate of La Salle High, where he lettered in football, track and field and lacrosse. He earned Honorable Mention All-State (Fla.) honors in football and was selected as the team s Most Valuable Player as a senior. He was listed third on Navy s depth chart at quarterback before the accident. Too Many Rushing Yards Toledo rushed for a season-high 321 yards against the Navy defense. The Mids turned in 515 yards (444 yds rushing, 71 yds passing) in a week one win over Indiana and came back with a 589-yard effort (352 yds rushing, 237 yds passing) in a 51-7 victory over Delaware in week two. The 589 yards of total offense are the most by a Navy team since Nov. 6, 2010, when Navy piled up 596 yards in a victory over East Carolina. The Mids have never had 500 yards or more of total offense in three straight games. The Mids topped 500 yards for the third time in 2013 with a 514-yard performance (419 rush, 95 pass) against Toledo.
