This year marks the 55th anniversary of the 1963 team that posted a 9-2 record and was ranked as high at No. 2 in the country. The Mids owned victories over West Virginia (51-7), William & Mary (28-0), Michigan (26-13), VMI (21-12), Pittsburgh (24-12), Notre Dame (35-14), Maryland (42-7), Duke (38-25) and Army (21-15). The Mids lost at SMU (32-28) and to No. 1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl (28-6). The weekend includes a Friday night dinner/dedication in the new 1963 Navy Football Team Club in Akerson Tower, a pregame tailgate, on-field team recognition and a Sunday brunch. The dedication of the club is a culmination of a fundraising effort from the team in support of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A new tribute will be unveiled in the club at the dedication and will provide recognition to one of Navy s all-time great teams. The following members of the 1963 team will be in attendance this weekend: Bruce Abel, Bruce Bickel, Michael Chumer, John Connolly, Dennis Connolly, Richard Curley, Charlie Durepo, Richard Earnest, Wayne Hanson, Neil Henderson, Bill Higgins, Joe Ince, Duncan Ingraham, Doug Katz, Andy Kish, Larry Kocisko, Alexander Krekich, Tom Lynch, Nick Markoff, Fred Moosally, Phil Norton, Bob Orlosky, Skip Orr, James Ounsworth, Pat Philbin, Norman Radtke, Mike Riley, Alan Roodhouse, John Sai, Robert Schaefer, Charlie Shields, Steven Shrawder, Roger Staubach, Robert Sutton and Bob Wittenberg. SETTING THE STAGE Navy and Temple will meet for the 14th time in school history and for the third time as conference foes when they square off on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (34,000) in a key conference game for both schools. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm and the presenting game day sponsor is Navy Mutual. The Mids are (.804) at home under head coach Ken Niumatalolo, including a 18-2 (.900) record over the last four seasons (16-1 in regular-season games over the last four years). PRESENTING GAME DAY SPONSOR Temple leads the all-time series, 7-6-1, and the Owls are 2-0 against the Mids since Navy joined the American Athletic Conference in Temple and UCF (0-1) are the only two AAC opponents that Navy has not beaten. Both of those schools are in the East Division, so Navy only plays them twice every four years. Temple has won three of the last four meetings and has dominated the Mids in the last two outings. The Owls beat Navy, 34-10, in Annapolis in the 2016 AAC Championship Game and then beat Navy last year, 34-26, at Lincoln Financial Field in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated. Navy s last win over Temple came in 2014, 31-24, in Philadelphia. Navy is 4-4 all-time against the Owls in Annapolis. Navy enters Saturday s game in a three-way tie for second place in the West Division with SMU and Tulane at 1-1. Next week s opponent, Houston, is in first place with a 1-0 mark. Temple is in a three-way tie for first place in the East Division with Cincinnati and UCF at 2-0. USF is 1/2 game back with a 1-0 mark. The Brigade of Midshipmen will march-on at 3:11 pm. A flyover will take place at the conclusion of the National Anthem at approximately 3:22 pm and will feature four Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornets from the Tomcatters of VFA-31 based out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. Piloting the lead aircraft is the squadron commanding officer Cmdr. Kevin Chlan, USNA Class of The wing aircraft will be piloted by Cmdr. Damon Loveless, USNA Class of 2001, Lt. Cmdr. James McMillan, USNA Class of 2005 and Lt. Nick Danforth, USNA Class of They recently completed a successful deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve onboard the USS George H.W. Bush. The Navy women s lacrosse alumni will be honored at the second timeout in the first quarter. The group is in town as part of the Women for Navy Athletics fundraising initiative to help raise money for women s varsity sports at the Naval Academy. The 2018 Navy women s lacrosse team will be honored at the first timeout of the second quarter. The Mids finished the 2018 season with an 18-4 mark, won the Patriot League Tournament Championship, defeated Johns Hopkins (16-9) and Loyola (19-15) in the NCAA Tournament before falling to Maryland (17-15) in the Quarterfinals. It was the second-best season in school history. The Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps and Navy Band will perform a combined performance at halftime. After the game, the Navy Football team will gather in front of the Brigade of Midshipmen and sing Navy s alma mater, Navy Blue & Gold. Hammond, sidelined early in the game when dazed by a helmet-to-helmet collision, returned to run for three touchdowns and throw for another, leading Air Force past Navy, 35-7, last Saturday in his first career start. Joseph Saucier also scored on a 48-yard run for Air Force, which took the first leg in the competition among the service academies for the Commander in Chief s trophy. Air Force will play at Army on Nov. 3 while Navy (2-3) plays Army on Dec. 8 in its final regular-season game. Hammond was injured on a third-down run in the opening minutes of the game. He returned to throw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Ronald Cleveland and run for touchdowns of 1, 2 and 5 yards. During Air Force s second offensive series, Hammond absorbed successive hits to his head by two Navy defenders. Shaken, Hammond lay on the ground for several moments while being tended to by team trainers and medical staff. He sat up and was helped to his feet before being led off the field for further examination. Officials, after reviewing the hit, penalized Navy linebacker Taylor Heflin for targeting. Heflin was disqualified from playing in the remainder of the game. Isaiah Sanders played in place of Hammond for most of the first quarter and part of the second before the starter was cleared to return. Up by seven at halftime, Air Force added two touchdowns in the third quarter with Hammond leading a pair of 75-yard drives that he finished with 5- and 1-yard scoring runs, respectively. He added the 2-yarder early in the fourth quarter on a quarterback draw. Navy struck first on a 2-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter by Garret Lewis, his first play in relief of starter Malcom Perry. But the Falcons came back to score a pair of touchdowns less than two minutes apart in the second quarter to move in front 14-7 at the half, triggering a run of 35 consecutive points by the Falcons. Hammond, in his second series since returning to the field, connected in the flat with Cleveland who turned a short reception into a 61-yard catch and run for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Saucier was able to turn the corner after taking a pitch from Hammond, outrunning defenders along the sideline to go in for the score. INJURIES The following players on the depth chart missed the Air Force game with an injury: Starting wide receiver Zach Abey, second-team cornerback Marcus Wiggins, secondteam linebacker Griffin Baumoel, third-team linebacker Tyler Pistorio, third-team quarterback Dalen Morris, thirdteam slot back Mason Plante and kickoff specialist J.R. 5 IN THE CLASSROOM The rigors a student-athlete faces at a Service Academy are unlike those a typical student-athlete might encounter on a day-to-day basis. Whether it s the added military training, mandatory room or uniform inspections or the academic schedule, Service Academy student-athletes are in a league of their own. The Naval Academy s academic day is divided into six 50-minute class periods beginning at 7:55 am and concluding at 3:20 pm. Unique to the Academies, all 4,400 Midshipmen reside on the Yard in Bancroft Hall and dine together in King Hall. Anthony and Sean are not only outstanding football players, but they are great leaders in the locker room and in Bancroft Hall and I have no doubt that they will be great captains for us. Gargiulo had a breakthrough junior campaign at fullback, rushing for 423 yards and three touchdowns on 76 carries (5.6 yards per carry). 7 MIDS CONSISTENTLY AMONG NATION S TOP RUSHING TEAMS Over the last 17 years, Navy has consistently been one of the top rushing teams in the country, never finishing lower than sixth. The Mids kicked off the trend in 2002 when they finished third in the country in rushing, averaging yds/gm. In 2003, Navy led the nation averaging a then school-record yds/gm. In 2005, Navy led the country in rushing for the second time in three years, averaging yds/gm. Navy finished the 2006 campaign averaging a nation s-best and then school-record yds/gm. The Mids rushed for a school-record yds/gm in 2007, becoming the first team in NCAA history to lead the nation in rushing three-consecutive years. In 2008, Navy led the country in rushing for an unprecedented fourth straight year, averaging yds/gm. The Mids finished No. 2 in the country in 2013, averaging yards per game. Navy finished No. 2 in the country in 2014, rushing for yards per game. It was the Mids best rushing effort since 2007 when they set the school record. In 2015, Navy finished No. 2 in the country, averaging yards per game. Georgia Southern, coached by current Tulane coach Willie Fritz, led the country in 2015 averaging a whopping yards per game. The Mids finished 2016 ranked No. 4, rushing for yards per game. Navy averaged a school-record rushing yards per game in 2017, which was the second most in the country. Kyle Eckel (1,249) and Craig Candeto (1,112) were the first players to achieve it in Meanwhile, Keenan Reynolds (1,373) and Chris Swain (1,023) accomplished the feat in MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE In eight career starts at quarterback, junior Malcolm Perry has carried the ball 184 times for 1230 yards (6.7 yds/carry) and 13 touchdowns (153.8 yds/gm). Perry has rushed for more than 100 yards in six of his eight starts and for over 200 yards in three of the seven (SMU and Army in 2017 and Lehigh in 2018). Perry is one of just five Navy players in school history to have two 200-yard rushing games in a single season, joining Zach Abey (2017), Keenan Reynolds (2013 and 2014), Chris McCoy (1996 and 1997) and Napoleon McCallum (1983). Perry is one of just four Navy players in school history to have three 200-yard rushing games in career. Chris McCoy holds the school record with five 200-yard rushing games, while Keenan Reynolds and Napoleon McCallum had four each. There have been only five runs of 90 yards or more in the history of Navy football and Perry has two of them - both in He is just the third player in FBS history to have two runs of 90 yards or more in the same season. Perry is averaging rushing yards per game this year, which is the 11th-best average in the country. Perry was the starting quarterback at Hawai i in Navy s 2018 season opener and rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. His touchdown run came on a 75-yard scamper, marking his fifth career touchdown of 65 yards or more. Against Memphis in the AAC opener, Perry carried the ball 36 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns in Navy s thrilling victory over the Tigers. Perry became the second player in school history to lead the team in rushing (166 yds), passing (22 yds) and receiving (17 yds) in a single game, joining Keenan Reynolds, who did it in his final collegiate game against Pitt in the 2015 Military Bowl. Perry had his third-career 200-yard rushing day when he amassed 223 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in Navy s victory over Lehigh. SMU was the first team to slow Perry holding him to 33 yards on 14 carries before Perry had to leave the game in the third quarter with a concussion. Perry was stymied for a second-straight game when he ws held to 54 yards on 19 carries against Air Force. Perry, who played at both slot back and quarterback as a sophomore, rushed for more than 100 yards in three consecutive games as a slot back (Cincinnati, Tulsa and Air Force) his sophomore year. He was the first Navy slot back to have three consecutive 100-yard rushing days since Shun White in Perry rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries against Cincinnati and a then career-best 104 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries against Tulsa. He had an incredible day against Air Force rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while catching two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. His 91-yard touchdown run against the Falcons was at that time tied for the second-longest run in school history and the longest run in stadium history. Against UCF, Perry caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Zach Abey and had a long touchdown run called back because of holding. Against Temple, Perry caught four passes for 94 yards and carried the ball five times for 23 yards. He also threw a five yard touchdown pass to Abey. Perry took over the starting quarterback job against SMU a year ago and rushed for an AAC-record 282 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries to lead Navy to a win. The 282 rushing yards was the fourth most in the country in 2017 and the second most by a quarterback. It was also the fifth most in FBS history by a quarterback. His 92-yard touchdown run now stands at the longest run in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium history and the second-longest run in program history. He was named the FBS Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. Brian Madden rushed for 201 yards and threw for 113 yards in a loss against Tulane in Brian Broadwater did it in 1998 against FCS Colgate, rushing for 216 yards and passing for 165 yards in a win. Abey s 79-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Carmona against Tulane last year was the longest TD pass by a Navy player since Ricky Dobbs threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jones against Arkansas State in Abey had a great game against Air Force in 2017, rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing for 86 yards and two TDs, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Carmona with 15 seconds remaining that gave Navy a win. Abey marched Navy 75 yards in 11 plays and took just 1:38 to do it and the Mids never needed to take a timeout (had two available). Against Memphis, Abey rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries, but completed just one of his seven passes for 20 yards while throwing two interceptions and losing three fumbles. After not playing in the Army game, Abey came off the bench against Virginia in the Military Bowl and rushed for 88 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries. The five touchdowns tied an FBS record for most rushing touchdowns in a bowl game and it also set an AAC record for any game. Abey rushed for 1,413 yards in 2017 which was the second most in a season in school history. Only Napoleon McCallum (1,587 in 1983) had more. It is also the 12th most in FBS history by a quarterback. The other aviator was identified as Lt. Cmdr. James Brice Johnson, a 2007 graduate of the Air Force Academy. Both pilots were assigned to the Blacklions of Strike Fighter Squadron Two One Three, based at Naval Air Station Oceana and assigned to Carrier Air Wing Eight.
