The Pack s 48 combined wins over the last two years are the most in back-to-back seasons since and (48). Mark Gottfried has now won more games in his first two seasons with the Pack (48) than any coach in school history with the exception of Everett Case (55) in 1947 and The Wolfpack posted an 11-7 mark in ACC play, marking its highest number of league wins since Three of those losses were without starting point guard Lorenzo Brown who missed time with an ankle injury. NC State advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals in back-to-back years for the first time since 2004 and Mark Gottfried is the first coach in NC State history, and only the third coach in ACC history, to take each of his first two squads to the NCAA Tournament. NC State has won at least one NCAA Tournament game in seven of its previous eight trips to the Big Dance. NC State finished the season at No. 33 in the RPI, and No. 33 in strength of schedule. NC State is 22nd in the BPI, and has the No. 20 schedule. NC State is the only team nationally to have five players average over 12.0 points per game. The Pack s starting five averages between ppg. The current Wolfpack squad is only the ninth in ACC history to have four 1,000-point scorers on the same team. The Pack, which led the nation in field goal percentage for several weeks, currently ranks fourth with a.494 mark. State ranks 13th nationally in scoring (77.5). Scott Wood leads the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (.443) and made three-pointers (3.0). Wood hit 16-of-27 (.593) in the ACC Tournament. Wood is now NC State all-time leader in both three-point field goals made (332) and career starts (135). Richard Howell is only the fifth player in school history to record both 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. He now has 1,200 points and 1,040 boards. Howell leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally in rebounding (10.7). He was one of only four BCS players to average a double-double in conference action. Lorenzo Brown is only the third player in school history to record 500+ career assists (580). He ranks seventh nationally and leads the ACC with 7.2 per game. C.J. Leslie is one of three players in the ACC to rank in the top-10 in points (seventh, 14.9), rebounds (eighth, 7.4) and field goal percentage (seventh,.514). Freshman T.J. Warren shot a blazing 75.0 percent (21-28) in the 2013 ACC Tournament, averaging 14.7 points per game. Warren leads the ACC and ranks ninth nationally in field goal percentage (.626). 2 NC State Basketball The NCAA Tournament - vs. Temple Head Coach Mark Gottfried overall (16th season) at NC State (2nd season) MARK-ED IMPROVEMENT After posting 24 wins last season, the second-most for a Pack rookie head coach, and 24 wins so far this season, Mark Gottfried s 48 combined wins are the most in back-to-back years since and (48 wins). He is one of only three coached in ACC history (Bill Guthridge and Roy Williams) to take each of his first two teams to the NCAA Tournament. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Has now made 19 trips to the NCAA Tournament as a player and coach Only the third coach in ACC history (with Bill Guthridge and Roy Williams) to take his first team teams to the NCAA tourney. Led the Wolfpack to the Sweet Sixteen in and a final ranking of 20th in the AP poll - that marked the fourth time one of his teams ended the season ranked. 24 wins and.667 winning percentage last season were the best for ACC first-year head caoches and some of the best marks nationally. Served as an ESPN college basketball analyst for two seasons. HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE Mark Gottfried has brought a fast-paced, high energy offense to NC State as evidenced by the team s scoring numbers. The Wolfpack currently ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and is 13th nationally, in scoring with 77.5 points per game. The Pack s offensive production has improved dramatically since Gottfried took over the program prior to last season. In , the campaign prior to his arrival, State ranked 115th nationally and sixth in the ACC in scoring with 70.7 points per game. Last year, his first with the Wolfpack, the average was up slightly to 72.9 points per game - the nation s 59th-best mark at season s end. State has scored at least 80 points in 19 contests this season - the highest total for a Wolfpack squad since (20 in 31 games). RECRUITING PROWESS Mark Gottfried is bringing top-level talent to Raleigh, as both of his recruiting classes have been ranked in the top-10 nationally. Last year, having just seven months until the fall signing period, Gottfried brought in the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation, including three McDonald s All-Americans. It marked the first time the Wolfpack had three McDonald s All-Americans in the same class since Gottfried followed up with three more recruits signed in November and that class currently ranks ninth nationally and once again boasts a McDonald s All-American in guard Anthony Cat Barber. Gottfried came to NC State with the reputation of being a first-class recruiter. Game time is 1:40 p.m. on TBS. Last season, the Pack earned its first NCAA bid since the season. NC State was the 11th seed, but knocked off San Diego State (79-65) and Georgetown (66-63) before falling to eventual runner-up Kansas (60-57) in the Sweet 16. PACK AS THE 8TH SEED NC State has never entered the NCAA Tournament as the eighth seed. PACK VERSUS THE 9TH SEED NC State has never faced the ninth seed in the NCAA Tournament. PACK IN FIRST ROUND (NOW SECOND ROUND) ACTION Technically the Pack s first game in the 2013 NCAA Tournament will be in the second round, but in the Pack s previous trips to the Big Dance, NC State has found success in its opening game. NC State enters 12-5 in what was formerly the first round, now the second round. In fact, the Pack has failed to win a NCAA Tournament game only once in its last eight trips. IN THE EAST REGION For the second straight year, the Pack was placed in the East Region. NC State currently posts a 9-7 mark in the region. Of NC State s 55 previous NCAA Tournament games, the Pack has played the most in the East Region (16). GOTTFRIED IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Head coach Mark Gottfried is making his second appearance in the NCAA Tournament as head coach of the Pack, and his ninth trip overall as a head coach. Last season, Gottfried became the 11th coach in ACC history to reach the NCAA Tournament in his first season. He is now only the third coach in ACC history to take both of his first two squads to the Big Dance, joining Bill Guthridge (1998, 99) and Roy Williams (2004, 05). In his first stop as a head coach at Murray State, Gottfried took the Racers to the NCAA Tournament in each of his final two seasons. At Alabama, Gottfried went to five straight NCAA Championships ( ), advancing as far as the Elite Eight in NCAA TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE Last season, no players on the Wolfpack roster had NCAA Tournament experience. This season will be different, as four of the Pack s current starters also started all three games in last year s run to the Sweet 16. C.J. Leslie (15.7 ppg), Lorenzo Brown (13.0), Scott Wood (12.0), and Richard Howell (11.7) all averaged double figures and at least 29.0 minutes in the three games last season. Rounding out the Pack s seven-man rotation is a trio of freshmen who obviously have never competed in the tournament. NC STATE STAFF KNOWS THE NCAA TOURNAMENT All three Pack assistant coaches have NCAA Tournament experience, combining for 23 NCAA Tournaments entering this season. Associate head coach Bobby Lutz started his NCAA postseason experience with back-toback NCAA appearances as an assistant coach at Charlotte in 1997 and Lutz was then promoted to head coach for the 49ers, and led them to five NCAA appearances in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, Orlando Early has now been an assistant coach at four different schools that made a combined eight NCAA Tournaments appearances. Early was part of the Western Carolina squad that won the Southern Conference and advanced to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Then, he was an assistant under Lutz at Charlotte in 1999 and Early joined Mark Gottfried s staff at Alabama in 2001, and was an assistant coach for four seasons, reaching the NCAA all four years. Rob Moxley s NCAA postseason experience came as an assistant at Charlotte under Lutz in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and THE SERIES VERSUS TEMPLE Friday s matchup between NC State and Temple will the eighth meeting in a series that dates back to NC State leads the series 6-1, having won the first six meetings. NC State is one of only six schools to have every coach in its history have at least a.500 record in NCAA play, given a minimum of four coaches. The others are Georgetown, Maryland, Michigan, Oklahoma and Syracuse. In fact, Michigan is the only other school with seven coaches to advance to the NCAA Tournament. PACK BRINGS HOME ACC HONORS All five of the Pack s starting five have earned earned some sort of ACC accolade in Senior Richard Howell nabbed first-team All- ACC honors by the media and second-team by the coaches. He was the Pack s first firstteam selection since Julius Hodge in Juniors Lorenzo Brown and C.J. Leslie were named to the ACC s second and third teams respectively by both the media and coaches. Freshman T.J. Warren was named to the ACC s All-Freshman Team. Last weekend, senior Scott Wood was tabbed to the ACC All-Tournament second-team. GOTTFRIED RACKING UP WINS Head coach Mark Gottfried has had an impressive start to his NC State career. The Pack picked up its 24th win of the season in the ACC Tournament. After posting 24 wins last season, the Pack has back-to-back 20+ win seasons for the first time since and Gottfried has now won more games in his first two seasons with the Pack (48) than any coach in school history with the exception of Everett Case (55) in 1947 and Overall, the 48 combined wins over the last two seasons are the most in back-to-back years since and (48 wins). If the Pack picks up its 49th win in the NCAA Tournament, it will be the most in back-toback years since 52 in 1974 and The Pack s 24 wins this season tie last year as the most since winning 26 en route to the national championship in FINISHING STRONG Last season under first year head coach Mark Gottfried, the Pack won six of its final eight games en route to a Sweet 16 appearance. History seems to be repeating itself this year. NC State won six of its last eight games to close out the regular season, and reached the ACC Tournament semifinals for the second straight season. BALANCED ATTACK Throughout the season, NC State s offensive attack has been balanced, with different players stepping up at different times. Each of the Pack s starting five is averaging between points per game. NC State is the only team nationally to have five players each average at least 12.0 points a game and is one of just seven teams to have five players average double figures. WOOD HEATS UP ACC TOURNAMENT Playing in his final ACC Tournament, senior Scott Wood left a lasting memory for many Wolfpack fans. Wood averaged 19.0 points, shooting 59.3 percent (16-27) from three-point range, and was named to the all-tournament team. In the quarterfinals win over Virginia, he nailed 7-of-12 long range bombs and finished with 23 points. He tied a career-high for threepointers, and also set a school record for most three-pointers in an ACC Tournament game. NC STATE PLAYERS CAREER STATS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT In the semifinal loss to Miami, Wood was 6-of- 10 on threes, and led the Pack once again with 21 points. In 10 career ACC Tournament games, Wood hit 33-of-69 (.478) from three-point range and averaged 12.6 points. ALL ABOUT THE OFFENSE NC State currently ranks second in the ACC and 13th nationally in scoring at 77.5 points per game, so it s probably safe to say that the offense is the driving force behind State s success. In the Pack s 24 wins, Mark Gottfried s squad is averaging 81.4 points per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field. In those 24 wins, NC State has been held under 70 points only twice. However, when the Pack s offense has stalled, the results have not been positive. In its 10 losses, NC State averaged 68.0 points per game, shooting 45.7 percent from the floor. In four of those 10 games, NC State was held under 70 points five times. In 24 wins In 10 losses Diff. FG% FG% FT% PPG HOWELL, WOOD SET SCHOOL MARKS Seniors Richard Howell and Scott Wood have led a revival of the NC State program in their four years, and their names are now etched in the record books as their careers wind down. Howell became the school s all-time leader in career offensive rebounds, and now has 389. He broke the previous career mark of 370 set by Kevin Thompson ( ). He also became only the fifth player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, and the first to do so since Tommy Burleson ( ). He ranks fifth in school history with 1,040 rebounds. Scott Wood has already set two new career marks, and could add a third. In the ACC Tournament, he broke Rodney Monroe s record of 322 career three-pointers made, and now has 332. 5 NC State Basketball The NCAA Tournament - vs. Temple SHOULDA, WOOD-A, COULDA Senior Scott Wood now has 332 career 3-pointers for the Wolfpack, which leads all active ACC players by 116 and ranks fifth in league history. In the ACC Tournament, Wood broke Rodney Monroe s ( ) career mark of 322. Wood is one of just 10 players in ACC history to hit 300 or more 3-point baskets since the bonus shot was introduced experimentally for the season and permanently in Career 3-Point Field Goals Player, School Years Pct. His career total of 88.8 percent is well ahead of the pace of Terry Gannon s ( ) current school record of.854 percent. BROWN IS BACK Junior point guard Lorenzo Brown returned to action at Clemson on Feb. 10 after missing two starts and most of a third game with an ankle injury - all NC State losses. Since returning from the injury, Brown has averaged 10.9 points, 7.8 assists and 35.7 minutes in the last 11 games. The Pack has gone 8-3 in those contests. Although he wasn t at full speed in his first game back at Clemson, Brown came off the bench and sparked the Pack s comeback win with 15 points and four assists in 32 minutes. It was Brown driving to the basket and then dishing to Scott Wood in the corner that led to Wood s game-winning three-pointer with just 1.0 left on the clock in the win. Brown then returned to the starting lineup the next game, and played a career-high 42 minutes in the overtime win over Virginia Tech on Feb. 16, dishing out seven assists and chipping in 15 points. Brown went down with the ankle injury midway through the first half at Virginia on Jan. 29, and missed the rest of that game and then the Pack s next two, against nationally ranked foes Miami and Duke. The Miami contest on Feb. 2 contest marked the first game of Brown s career that he missed, breaking a string of 59 straight starts dating back to his freshman season. UN WARREN-TED SUCCESS Freshman forward T.J. Warren was inserted into the Pack s starting lineup in the last nine games, scoring in double figures in eight. In those games, he has averaged 15.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. Warren was even hotter in the ACC Tournament, as he shot a blistering 75.0 percent (21-28) and averaged 14.7 points in the Pack s three games. Warren had a monster night in the thrashing of Florida State on Feb. 19, with 31 points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes for his first career double dip. That point total was the third-highest ever by a Wolfpack freshman. In the next game at UNC, he recorded his second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Warren ranks second among ACC freshmen, and 24th overall in scoring with 12.4 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points five times this season - tying for the most on the Wolfpack squad. He leads the ACC in field goal percentage with a.626 mark, ranking ninth nationally Warren was named to the ACC s All-Freshman team, the Pack s first selection since DOUBLE TROUBLE It has been almost four decades since an NC State basketball player had more double-doubles than senior Richard Howell has posted in Howell posted an ACC-best 17 double-doubles on the season, and a leaguehigh nine in conference play. Howell s season mark ranks eighth nationally and he is just one of four BCS players to average a doubledouble in conference play this year. In fact, Howell has more double-doubles than 10 other ACC teams! Not since Tommy Burleson had 26 in has a Pack player posted a higher total. Howell had posted double-digit point and rebound totals in 16 of the last 29 outings. NC State leads the ACC with 35 individual double-doubles this season - the next closest team is Duke with 19. His.514 field goal percentage ranks seventh in the current league rankings. Leslie, BC s Ryan Anderson, and Duke s Mason Plumlee are the only players in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Over the last 15 games, Leslie has averaged 14.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. He has recorded seven double-doubles in that span, and has 10 on the season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS All four of the Pack s upperclassmen are climbing up the charts in the ACC and NC State record books in various categories: Scott Wood is now NC State s all-time leader in three-pointers made with 332, fifth-most in ACC history. Wood also set a new NC State record for career starts with his 126th on Feb. 16 vs. Virginia Tech. He broke the record set by Julius Hodge, and now has 132 for his career. MILLENIUM MEN The game at Wake Forest on Jan. 22 may have marked the first time in school history that two players have reached the 1,000-point total for their career in the same game. Senior Richard Howell and junior Lorenzo Brown both reached that milestone and now boast 1,200 and 1,145 career points respectively. All four of the Wolfpack s upperclassmen are members of the 1,000-point club. Scott Wood scored his 1,000th point in last season s opening-round win over San Diego State in the NCAA Tournament and now has 1,457 career points which ranks 18th in school history Junior C.J. Leslie earned his place in the fraternity in the first half in NC State s win over Western Michigan on Dec. 29. He became the 46th player in NC State s storied basketball history to score his 1,000th point and now boasts 1,339 for his career. The last time NC State had three 1,000-point scorers on the same team was in , with Brandon Costner (1,273), Ben McCauley (1,138) and Courtney Fells (1,060). The squad also had a trio of 1,000 scorers led by Thurl Bailey (1,495), Dereck Whittenburg (1,272) and Sidney Lowe (1,048). That squad went on to win the national title. Only 10 previous times have a pair of players in the same recruiting class each scored 1,000 point during their careers, the last was the trio of Costner, Fells and McCauley. Howell and Wood became the 11th and Brown and Leslie are the 12th. 1,000-POINT QUARTETS NC State is only the ninth team in ACC history to have four players who have reached 1,000 career points on the same team. WOOD ON FIRE Senior sharpshooter Scott Wood is regarded as one of the nation s top long range threats. He currently leads the ACC in both three-point field goal percentage (44.3 percent), and made three-pointers per game (3.0). His 102 makes this season is ninth-most in the NCAA. Over the last 10 games, Wood is averaging 15.6 points, hitting 41 bonus shots. He has led the Pack in scoring five times over the last 10 games. THE CLEANER In the Wolfpack s win over top-ranked Duke on Jan. 12, Mark Gottfried asked his team during a time out if anyone was going to rebound. 7 NC State Basketball The NCAA Tournament - vs. Temple Howell lived up to his word in that game and in the games since, as he has been active on the glass more than ever before. He currently leads the ACC in rebounds per game with In games against ACC competition, his average was an even more impressive 11.4, as he was the only ACC player to average double digits in conference games this season. Howell leads the conference in offensive boards, pulling down 3.8 a contest, 4.2 vs. league opponents. Second Time s The Charm Last season, Mark Gottfried became the third coach in NC State history to take his first team to the NCAA Tournament, joining Press Maravich and Les Robinson in achieving that feat. This year, Gottfried has accomplished a feat only one other coach in school history has done by taking his second edition to the Big Dance. Jim Valvano guided the Pack to a overall record and a 7-7 mark in the ACC, earning his first berth into the NCAA tournament in his second year. It was a short trip, however, as the Wolfpack lost to Tennessee-Chattanooga in a first-round game in Indianapolis. The next year, in Valvano s third season, the Pack won nine consecutive postseason games (three in the ACC tournament and six in the NCAA tournament) to win the 1983 national championship. Big Rich is currently fifth nationally in rebounding - 10th in offensive boards. In 16 of the last 22 games, Howell has rebounded in double digits. He had a nine-game streak of double-digit rebound games broken vs. Miami on Feb. 2 - the longest double-digit rebound streak for a Pack player since All- American Tommy Burleson did it in 10 straight games in Howell also continues his climb in the NC State record book. He now ranks fifth in school history in that career category with 1,040. He became the school s leader for career offensive rebounds March 3 at Georgia Tech, and now has 389 for his career. BATTING.500 Although NC State continues to be among the national leaders in field goal percentage, the Pack s mark dropped below.500 for the first time all season in mid-february. NC State, which led the nation for several weeks, now ranks fifth with a.494 mark. In 19 of the Pack s 34 games this season, NC State has shot over 50.0 percent. The last time the Pack shot over 50.0 percent in that many games was during the season, when NC State shot 50.0 percent or better in 19 of the 36 contests. FREE WOOD With the game close in the final minute, there is nobody NC State coach Mark Gottfried wants to go to the free throw line more than senior Scott Wood. Wood s.920 mark from the line would lead the ACC if he had enough makes to qualify (the minimum is 2.5, he is at 2.38). Wood has made 67 of his last 71 attempts from the charity stripe - a.944 mark. In the final minute of ACC games this season, he sank 19-of-22 (.864) attempts. For his career, Wood has hit 88.8 percent from the free throw line. He is well ahead of the pace to establish a school record, as the current school record holder for career free throw percentage is Terry Gannon ( ) at.854 Legendary Everett Case, who brought big-time basketball to the South, had the second most wins of his 16- year NC State career in his second season, , posting a 29-3 overall mark. The Pack also won both the Southern Conference regular-season championship and the Southern Conference tournament title. At the time, however, conference champions did not automatically qualify for the tournament. The eight-team field was selected by district representatives and Kentucky was chosen over Case s Wolfpack. Instead, NC State made its second consecutive trip to the National Invitation Tournament, where it lost in the first round to DePaul in New York. Last season, Wood set the ACC record for consecutive free throws made with 66 straight during the season. That streak is the fourth longest in NCAA history. CUTTING IT CLOSE The Pack s seven ACC conference losses were by a combined 35 points, with five of those losses being decided by four points or less. NC State s first four ACC losses at Maryland (1), at Wake Forest (2), at Virginia (3) and vs. Miami (1) were decided by a combined seven points, and all were decided in the final 10 seconds. The Pack was on the positive side of two back-to-back close games in mid-february. At Clemson, State trailed for most of the game, but Scott Wood s three-pointer with just 1.0 left gave the Pack the win. Gottfried and company dispatched Virginia Tech in overtime on Feb. 16, winning On the season, NC State s average margin of victory in the 11 ACC wins was 9.7, while the margin of defeat in the seven losses was 5.0. WE LIKE LEWIS The injury to Lorenzo Brown definitely had a silver lining - and his name is Tyler Lewis. The Statesville native averaged just 9.7 minutes per game over the first 20 games of the season, but with Brown out versus leagueleading Miami, Lewis played 36 minutes, then 39 in a start the next time out at Duke. Now Lewis is seeing action both as Brown s backup and playing alongside him. Over the last 13 games, Lewis has averaged 5.8 points in 17.2 minutes. In ACC play this season, the rookie had 25 assists to just five turnovers in 226 minutes of action, and hit 31- of-35 free throws in league play. ON THE REBOUND Over the last nine games, NC State has been hitting the boards. The Pack has won the rebounding battle in six of those contests, and

NC State cleaned up on the glass in the home win over FSU on Feb. 19, edging the Noles 45-21, including a 21-6 edge on the offensive boards. The 45 rebounds were the most the Pack has produced this season, and the 21 by FSU were the fewest for an opponent. At UNC, the Pack had a edge and then a advantage against Boston College. In the win against Wake Forest, the Pack held a edge, and converted 16 offensive boards into 44 second chance points. NC State is one of just two teams (Wake Forest) to have a pair of players in the top-10 in the ACC rebounding stats. As a team, the Pack ranks third in the ACC in rebounding margin. KNOCKING OFF NUMBER 1 NC State s win on Jan. 14 against topranked Duke was the program s first over the nation s No. 1 team since Feb. 2, On that date, the Wolfpack also knocked over the No. 1 ranked Blue Devils, 78-74, snapping an 18-game winning streak. The victory was NC State s sixth over a No. 1 team. The Wolfpack is one of 18 programs to boast at least five wins over No. 1 teams. MAKIN THREES When senior Scott Wood has success from beyond the 3-point arc, NC State has success in the win category. Since Mark Gottfried took over the program, when Wood hits three or more 3-pointers in a contest, the Wolfpack s record is Its record improves to 16-3 when Wood connects on four or more 3-pointers in a contest. In his career, Wood has nailed three or more threes 59 times. State posts a mark in those contests. Twice this season, Wood s late three-pointers have helped the pair to road ACC wins. At Clemson, Wood knocked down his third three-pointer of the game with just 1.0 left on the clock, to help the Pack pull out a win. In the ACC opener at Boston College, exploded for 12 points over the final 3:46 of the contest to seal the win for the Wolfpack. He scored his first six points on consecutive 3-pointers. Then in the final 27 seconds of the game, Wood connected on all six of his free throw attempts, including two with a second remaining to seal the victory. HEAD COACHES Mark Gottfried brings 16 years of experience as a head coach to the Wolfpack, but he isn t the only one on the NC State staff who has run his own program. Three other members of his staff have also served as head coaches: Associate head coach Bobby Lutz, Assistant coach Orlando Early and Director of player development Larry Farmer. Lutz was a head coach for 25 years, guiding the program at at Charlotte from and at Pfeiffer from He took Pfeiffer to six NAIA Tournaments and Charlotte to five NCAA appearances. Early was the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe from , earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year honors. In his 12 seasons as a head coach, Farmer won 166 games in stints at UCLA ( ), Weber State ( ) and Loyola-Chicago ( ). He led the Bruin squad to a 23-6 mark, the Pac-10 title and a No. 7 final ranking. PACK ON TARGET NC State has boasted three of the top seven field goal shooters in the ACC this season. Freshman forward T.J. Warren has led the league all season and now posts a sizzling.626 mark. If the season were to end today, Warren s mark would break the school record of.624 set by Kevin Thompson in Richard Howell currently ranks third in the ACC field goal percentage standings while C.J. Leslie is seventh with marks of.566 and.514 respectively. Only Virginia has more than one player ranked in the league s top 10 in field goal percentage in the ACC besides NC State. NO SUB FOR YOU Mark Gottfried s starters and top reserve are definitely seeing the bulk of the action for NC State in The Wolfpack is the only team in the ACC that has six players averaging over 27 minutes of playing time a game. Duke and Miami each have five players seeing that much action. Beyond the Pack s top six, only Tyler Lewis is averaging double digit minutes (12.7). PAINT PRODUCTION The Pack has outscored its opposition, 1,336-1,097, in the paint this season, an average of 39.3 points per game. The opposition is scoring 32.3 points per contest in the lane, giving the Pack +7.0-point edge. That equates to 51 percent of the Wolfpack s scoring production coming from the post, compared to 46 percent of the scoring output for its opponents post players. This season, NC State scored 40 or more points in the lane 16 times this season and three times it has eclipsed the 50-point barrier, including scoring a season-high 56 points at Wake Forest on Jan. 22. The Pack owns a 14-2 record in those games. GIVING ASSIST-ANCE Eight times this season, junior Lorenzo Brown has recorded double digits in assists. All of last season, Brown had two performances with 10 or more assists, including a career-best 13 in the Pack s loss to topranked Syracuse. Against the Orange, he also registered his first career double-double, adding 10 points. Brown, who leads the ACC in assists per game at 7.2, is the conference s active leader for double-digit assist games with 10. He has seven 10+ assists games this season, only one player, Quinn Cook of Duke with two, has more than one this year. Brown s assists per game are the most by a Wolfpack player since Chris Corchiani averaged 9.6 per game in ON THE BREAK One of the points of emphasis in NC State s offensive style is to score points in transition. This season, the Pack has outscored its opponents, , on fast break points. Through 34 games, NC State is averaging 14.5 points per game on the fast break, compared to 7.1 per contest for its competition. OUR STATE, IN-STATE The NC State roster includes six players from North Carolina, tying for the most on a Wolfpack team in a decade. The three-player freshman class, all of whom were McDonald s All-Americans, are North Carolina natives. Rodney Purvis hails from Raleigh, T.J. 45 NC State Basketball Wolfpack Coaching Staff MARK GOTTFRIED SECOND SEASON ALABAMA 87 Back-to-back 24 win seasons... Consecutive NCAA Tournament bids... Two straight top 10 recruiting classes... A Sweet Sixteen appearance... National rankings. Those are just a few of the many accomplishments enjoyed by NC State during head coach Mark Gottfried s first two seasons with the program. Under his direction, the Pack earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006 and he is now the only coach in NC State s storied basketball history, and only the third in the 60-year history of the ACC, to take his first two teams to the Big Dance. This year s squad has already recorded a record, tying its highest win total in 30 years. For Gottfried, this is not unfamiliar territory as he has made 19 trips to the NCAA Tournament as either a player or coach. Last season, when he guided his first State team to the Sweet Sixteen, he became only the second coach in ACC history to post a pair of NCAA Tournament victories in his initial season and he was one of seven first-year coaches in the 68-team tournament field. Gottfried became the third Wolfpack coach to direct his team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season, joining Press Maravich (1965) and Les Robinson (1991). For the third time in Gottfried s tenure as a head coach, he has now led a program to multiple NCAA berths. In his previous head coaching stops, Gottfried led his alma mater Alabama to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments ( ), including a trip the Elite Eight in At Murray State, Gottfried guided the Racers to NCAA Tournament berths in 1997 and In two seasons at NC State, Gottfried has compiled 48 wins, the most victories by the Pack since the and (also 48). Last season, his 24 wins and.667 winning percentage were the best for first-year head coaches in the ACC and some of the best nationally. Gottfried s first-year win total win was only second to legendary Everett Case (26) for triumphs by a first-year Wolfpack mentor, and the 24 wins were the most for the Pack since This season, the Wolfpack finished with a second straight top-four ACC finish, a second straight trip to the ACC Tournament semifinals and 11 conference victories. That league win total is the highest since the squad also had 11 wins in ACC play. State was ranked in the national polls for 14 weeks during the campaign. In his first ACC campaign, Gottfried guided NC State to nine conference victories and a tie for fourth in the league standings. The Pack was ranked 20th in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The last time NC State had been ranked in the final poll was following the season. It marked the fourth time that a Gottfried-coached team has finished ranked in the final poll. Last season, Gottfried earned his 300th career win with the Pack s win over Virginia in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. In 16 collegiate seasons, his career record stands at , with a mark at State. He brought a wealth of experience and achievement to the Wolfpack position, after spending 11 seasons as head coach at Alabama ( ), compiling a record of with five NCAA Tournament and three NIT appearances. He led Alabama to three top 25 final rankings, including one top 10 ranking. He led the Tide to the SEC regular-season championship in his fourth season, also the first of five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Gottfried was named the 2002 SEC Coach of the Year. Gottfried s squad became the first in Alabama history to be ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, as the team held the ranking for two weeks. The program achieved another first during the season, as Alabama upset top-ranked and top-seeded Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and then defeated reigning national champion Syracuse to advance to the school s first Elite Eight appearance. Gottfried served as head coach at Murray State for three seasons, compiling a overall record and mark in conference play. In his first season with the Racers, Gottfried s squad advanced to the 1996 NIT, then made the NCAA Tournament in both 1997 and He coached Murray State to Ohio Valley Conference championships in each of his seasons as head coach, becoming the first head coach to win three OVC titles in only three seasons. Prior to his stint at Murray State, Gottfried spent eight years as an assistant at UCLA ( ) and was on the staff when the Bruins won the 1995 national championship. He started his collegiate playing career at Oral Roberts, where he was a freshman All-American during his one season (1983) with the Golden Eagles. Gottfried transferred to Alabama, where he started 98 consecutive games and helped the Crimson Tide advance to the Sweet Sixteen in all three seasons he played. He holds the school record for most threepoint field goals in a single game (8), and is the school s all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage (.485). Gottfried earned a B.A. in communications from Alabama in He won both the school s Hayden Riley Top Scholar Award and the Bryant Award as the school s top scholar-athlete during his senior year. A seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Pistons in the 1987 NBA Draft, Gottfried toured internationally with Athletes in Action as a player in and later returned in 1989 to coach a summer tour in Poland and Germany. Gottfried is the son of Joe and Mary Gottfried. Joe is the former Director of Athletics at South Alabama before retiring in 2009 after 25 years. His uncle, Mike Gottfried, was a longtime college football coach and serves as an ESPN college football analyst. 47 NC State Basketball Coaching Staff BOBBY LUTZ ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Considered one of the top basketball minds in the nation, Bobby Lutz is in his second season on head coach Mark Gottfried s staff at NC State and his first year as associate head coach. Lutz was elevated to his current position on April 20, The 53-year-old Lutz came to NC State after a season on the staff at Iowa State, where he helped the Cyclones earn their highest win total since Prior to his stint in Ames, Lutz served as the head coach at Charlotte from , where he led his alma mater to eight postseason appearances (five NCAA, three NIT) in his 12 years at the helm. He is the winningest coach in 49er history, posting a record of and is the only coach in school history to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament apperances twice in his career. A native of Catawba, N.C., Lutz led Charlotte to a school-record five 20-win seasons, averaged more than 18 wins a year and won three Conference USA titles (1999, 2001, 2004) in his tenure with the 49ers. He had four top 20 national recruiting classes and tutored 10 players who earned first-team all-conference honors. His 49ers squads knocked off a top-10 opponent five times, including a win over No. 3 Cincinnati in Five of the eight wins over top-10 opponents in Charlotte s history came under Lutz s watch. In 2005, Lutz was a finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award. Prior to being named head coach, Lutz was an assistant coach at Charlotte for three seasons ( ) under head coach Melvin Watkins. The 49ers compiled a record of and went to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments when Lutz was an assistant for Watkins. Before his tenure at Charlotte, Lutz molded Pfeiffer, a NAIA school in Misenheimer, N.C., into a national power as head coach from He posted a record and qualified for six straight NAIA Tournament berths, including three Final Four appearances. His teams had a.785 winning percentage (153-42) from and he developed 10 NAIA All- Americans. During his 49ers tenure, he also tabbed as the 2005 C-USA Coach of the Year by ESPN.com and CollegeInsider.com and was named The Birmingham News 1999 C-USA Coach of the Year. Lutz graduated with High Honors from UNC Charlotte in 1980 with a degree in economics and psychology and a 3.82 GPA. He earned three other degrees: Lenoir-Rhyne, 1981 (A.B. Secondary Education); Winthrop, 1985 (M.A.T. Secondary Social Studies); Clemson, 1986 (M.A. Education - Administration & Supervision). Lutz has been extremely active in off-the-court endeavors and goodwill campaigns in his career. He has served as the honorary chair of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society s Light Up The Night Campaign as well as the Coaches Curing Kids Cancer organization. In 2002, he was named the Carolinas Father of the Year by the National Father s Day Council. ORLANDO EARLY ASSISTANT COACH The season is assistant coach Orlando Early s second year on the NC State men s basketball staff and his sixth year working with Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried. Over that span, the duo has produced five winning seasons and five NCAA Tournament berths, including State s record last year, its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2006 and its first Sweet 16 appearance since Early spent four seasons ( ) as an assistant under Gottfried at Alabama. During that time, Crimson Tide topped the 20-win mark three times, posted a combined record, advanced to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, held the No. 1 national ranking, won an SEC regular-season championship and made a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight. His work as an assistant coach was recognized on a national level in 2004, as Athlon Sports named him the third best assistant coach in the nation. Early joined the Wolfpack after serving one season as an assistant coach at South Carolina. Prior to that he spent five seasons as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe. Early led Louisiana-Monroe to a record during his tenure, including a mark in home contests. He led a squad that was heavily affected by Hurricane Katrina to a mark during his first season ( ), and followed that with an record in the program s first winning season in five years. His sophomore squad collected a 14-0 mark at home and a share of the Sun Belt Conference West Division title in the program s first season in the league. He also guided the Warhawks to their first postseason victory since in the conference tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals, where they eventually fell to tournament champion North Texas. For his efforts, Early was named Coach of the Year by four different outlets, including the Sun Belt Conference, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (District 8 Coach of the Year). He also concluded the season as a finalist for the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. Early began his coaching career at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, serving as an assistant from He followed with a three-year stint at Western Carolina. He was an assistant coach in 1996, when the Catamounts captured the Southern Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He served as associate head coach during his last two years at Western Carolina. Early followed his term at WCU by continuing to climb the coaching ladder, spending three seasons ( ) as an assistant at Charlotte, where he worked with fellow Wolfpack assistants Bobby Lutz and Rob Moxley when Lutz was the 49ers head coach. He helped Charlotte to a pair of Conference USA titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT appearance. Early and his wife, Jualeah, have three children, Nakita, Storm and Erica. 48 NC State Basketball Coaching Staff ROB MOXLEY ASSISTANT COACH Noted for his recruiting prowess, Rob Moxley is in his second season as a member of the NC State basketball staff. The season marks the 14th year that Moxley and associate head coach Bobby Lutz have worked together. Moxley, born in Baltimore, Md., came to NC State after serving as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee for the season. Prior to his one-year stint at MTSU, he served as Lutz s associate head coach at Charlotte for five seasons and was with the program 12 years overall. He served as an assistant coach for seven years ( ) before accepting an assistant coaching position at Maryland in He returned to Charlotte after one season to take over as associate head coach. Moxley proved his ability to recruit by helping the Wolfpack land the top 10 recruiting class of Tyler Lewis, Rodney Purvis and T.J. Warren, all of whom were McDonald s All-Americans. In 2008, HoopScooponline.com ranked Moxley among the nation s top 100 assistant coaches. In 2007, rivals.com ranked him as one of the top 25 recruiters in the country, and Basketball Times placed him 10th in its top 16 Friends of Junior Colleges. During his time at Charlotte, Moxley helped land four Top 20 recruiting classes for the 49ers and was instrumental in signing 2001 ESPN.com National Freshman of the Year Rodney White and 2003 All-Conference USA choice Demon Brown. Moxley helped attract Maryland s 18thranked 2006 recruiting class (Rivals.com) and recruited 2010 ACC Player of the Year and 2010 NBA first-round pick Greivis Vasquez. He began as an assistant under Lutz at Pfeiffer University in They worked together for two years before moving together to Gardner-Webb in When Lutz was offered an assistant position with the 49ers for , Moxley remained at Gardner-Webb. He returned to Pfeiffer for two years, , as an assistant to head coach Dave Davis. A 1994 graduate of Pfeiffer, Moxley and his wife Jennifer have four children: Joey, Emily, Allison and Jack. He was a junior college Division III All-America guard in 1991 at Montgomery (Md.) C.C. He played two seasons at Newberry (S.C.) College under coach Tom Quinn. JEFF DUNLAP DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS In his second year on the Wolfpack basketball staff, Jeff Dunlap, a 27-year veteran of the coaching ranks, serves as the Wolfpack s director of basketball operations. Dunlap is no stranger to NC State head coach Mark Gottfried with the two having an association that spans more than 20 years, including a twoyear stint in which Dunlap served as an assistant coach on Gottfried s staff at Alabama. A proven and successful coach, administrator and recruiter, Dunlap has worked in the SEC, MAC, Horizon League and Big West Conference in his career and also coached in the Division II and junior college ranks. Dunlap served as an assistant coach at Western Michigan during the campaign, helping lead the Broncos to a record and a postseason berth. It was his second stint at WMU, as he also served as an assistant coach from Dunlap spent the 2010 season working for Big Shots, an organization that organizes exposure camps for high school basketball players across the country. He was the tournament director at camps held in Georgia and Alabama. Prior to his most recent stint at Western Michigan, Dunlap spent two seasons ( ) as an assistant coach and director of basketball operations at Alabama. In his first season with the Crimson Tide, he was promoted to assistant coach at midyear. Dunlap spent four seasons as an assistant at the University of Georgia ( ), helping the program claim the SEC East title in 2002 on the way to finishing and No. 23 in the country in the final AP poll. This season, Dunlap is reunited with Larry Farmer, the Pack s new director of player development. The UCLA alumni worked together at Loyola when Farmer was the head coach and then again for a season at Western Michigan as assistant coaches. Dunlap also the founded and served as director of the California-based Complete Player Basketball Camp, which he operated with former UCLA teammate Jack Haley, an 11-year NBA veteran. Throughout his career, Dunlap has gained additional experience by participating in several basketball camps including the Superstar Invitational, John Wooden and Pat Riley camps. Dunlap earned a bachelor s degree in political science from UCLA in 1986 and a master s in education from Azusa Pacific University in As a student-athlete at UCLA, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award in Dunlap started his collegiate career at Pierce Community College in Los Angeles and then was a three-year letterman for the Bruins from He was a member of the 1985 NIT Championship team, playing under Larry Farmer and Walt Hazzard. Dunlap is married to the former DeeDee Hinson, who played basketball at Azusa Pacific. The couple has two children, Brady Douglas and Brooklin Grace.

49 NC State Basketball Coaching Staff LARRY FARMER DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Veteran collegiate coach Larry Farmer is in his first season as a member of the NC State men s basketball staff as director of player development. BOB ALEJO ASST. AD/STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Assistant Athletics Director for Strength and Conditioning Bob Alejo oversees all of the strength and conditioning efforts of the department and coordinates the day-to-day efforts of the men s basketball and soccer teams. In his role, Farmer assists with the evaluation of video, development of practice and game schedules and game planning. He also acts as the academic and community liaison for the program. Farmer is no stranger to NC State head coach Mark Gottfried or Wolfpack director of operations Jeff Dunlap. Farmer s association with Gottfried dates back to Gottfried s days as an UCLA assistant. Dunlap also served as an assistant on Farmer s staff at Loyola-Chicago. The two also served together on the Western Michigan staff for one season. In 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Farmer amassed 166 victories in stints at UCLA ( ), Weber State ( ) and Loyola-Chicago ( ). During his time at the helm of the Bruin program, he guided his alma mater to a three-year mark of 61-23, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. During the campaign, he led UCLA to a 23-6 mark, the Pac-10 title and a No. 7 final ranking. Farmer played for legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA from , where he helped the Bruins capture three NCAA titles during a stretch in which UCLA won seven straight national championships. During his college career, Farmer helped UCLA to an impressive 89-1 mark. Following his playing career, Farmer was drafted by both the NBA s Cleveland Cavaliers and ABA s Denver Nuggets, but opted to return to Westwood to begin his coaching career as an assistant ( ) for the Bruins. Prior to the season, he was elevated to head coach. Farmer has also coached at the professional level serving as head coach of the Qadsia Sporting Club in Kuwait ( ) and as an assistant with the NBA s Golden State Warriors ( ). He also served as a coach for the Kuwaiti National Team from Prior to joining the Wolfpack staff in April, Alejo served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Oakland A s, a position he also held from In that role, he was responsible for all aspects of the organization s yearround physical preparation at both the major league and minor league levels. Prior to rejoining the A s, Alejo was the Director of Strength and Conditioning at UC Santa Barbara from During that time, he began working with two-time beach volleyball Olympians Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, accompanying them to 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2012 Olympics in London. At the Beijing Games, the duo captured gold and in London, they advanced to the medal round. From , Alejo served as strength and conditioning coach at UCLA, where he worked with 23 men s and women s teams, including the men s basketball team while current Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried was an assistant coach. During his tenure in Westwood, the Bruins racked up 25 national championships and produced more than 100 All-Americans. Prior to joining the Bruins staff, Alejo served as strength and conditioning coach for football at his alma mater, Chico State. He earned his B.A. in physical education from Chico State in 1982 and is a member of the Wildcats Athletic Hall of Fame after a successful baseball career. An accomplished lecturer and author, Alejo is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (through the National Strength and Conditioning Association s Certification Commission) and holds the advanced NSCA Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach distinction. He has also been elected to three halls of fame: Chico State Athletics, Chico State Baseball (inaugural inductee) and the Chico Professional Baseball Legends of the Diamond. Most recently, Farmer spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Western Michigan. Prior to joining the Broncos staff, he spent three years on the bench at the University of Hawai i. His college coaching experience also includes a stint as an assistant at Rhode Island ( ), where he helped the Rams reach the Elite 8. Farmer is married and has two children.
