She also becomes the sixth Lion to be named First Team All-WCC twice. Young (Torrance, Calif.) missed the first eight games of the regular season with a broken foot but recovered to put up one of the greatest offensive seasons in LMU history and earn First Team honors for the second time in her career. In just 20 games, Young topped 20 points on nine occasions and scored in double figures 6 times, putting up a 6.3 ppg average overall. Her,542 points rank third all-time at LMU while she is fourth in field goals made and fifth in free throw percentage. Nichols (Long Beach, Calif.) earned her first all-conference award with a selection to the Honorable Mention team despite missing the final six games of the season with a torn ACL. Prior to her injury, Nichols was among the WCC leaders in scoring, rebounding, steals, three-pointers made, and minutes played. She averaged 6.5 ppg in the WCC and 4.6 ppg overall and had posted a new career-high of 33 points at Santa Clara on January 29 in the last game before her injury. On the season, Nichols averaged 4.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2. apg, and 2. spg in 3. minutes. LMU ACHIEVES THREE-PEAT IN SOLES4SOULS SHOE DRIVE In conjunction with the 20 Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championships in Las Vegas, the WCC and Zappos.com will donate over,740 new and gently used pairs of shoes to international non-profit Soles4Souls. This is the third year that the WCC teamed up with Zappos.com and Soles4Souls to challenge each WCC campus to collect the most shoes from December to the end of the conference basketball season. Through the efforts of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and marketing department on each campus, the WCC set another conference record, beating last year s total of 0,000 pairs of collected shoes. I would like to congratulate our eight institutions, their student-athletes, administrators and campus communities for setting yet another conference record, said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. To see the Zappos. com WCC Shoe Drive and Kidz Day grow from a one-year experiment to a tradition within our conference has been a great way for our schools to showcase their shared dedication to meaningful community outreach. Loyola Marymount, the three-time winner of the Zappos.com WCC Shoe Drive, collected 2,260 pairs of shoes. Portland came close behind with 2,45 pairs, while four of the remaining six WCC institutions were able to gather over,300 pairs of shoes. For their efforts, the Loyola Marymount Lions will receive a student-fan group party provided by the WCC and will be recognized at the first round games of the LMU men s and women s basketball teams at the Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships. THE HURT LOCKER LMU s reliance on its depth suffered a major blow this season as the team has gone through a myriad of injuries that has kept it from playing at full strength. Three players - junior starters Alex Cowling and Candice Nichols and freshman Mackenzie Kerins - are all out for the season and injuries have resulted in only three players playing in all 28 games thus far. Four projected starters have missed significant time and the Lions were forced to play without two,000 point scorers against Cal State Northridge and UCLA. As a result of the injuries, LMU used eight different starting lineups in the first 4 games and the injuries have accounted for a combined 55 games missed. The biggest injury has been that of junior Alex Cowling, who made it through the first month of the season before being sidelined with a recurring foot problem. After leading LMU in scoring in each of the first six games and averaging 22.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg, it was announced on December 8 that Cowling will miss the rest of the season and petition for a medical redshirt. Junior Candice Nichols will also miss the rest of the season after suffering a season-ending knee injury on February 3. To that point, Nichols had been LMU s rock as the only Lion to have started every game of the season and scoring in double figures in 9 of 2 games overall. She picked up the slack when Cowling went out, turning in top-scorer performances in the six games following Cowling s injury, and was averaging 4.6 ppg overall and 6.5 in WCC play, in addition to being among the WCC leaders points, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive rebounds, three-pointers made, and minutes per contest. Nichols underwent surgery on March. 5

6 LMU INJURY BUG Player Injury Games Missed Alex Cowling Foot 22* Monica DeAngelis Foot 9 Renahy Young Foot 8 Jessica Vargas Shoulder 7 Candice Nichols Knee 6* Mackenzie Kerins Shoulder 5* Melanie Ysaguirre Concussion * Player out for season Senior guard Renahy Young was the first to go down, suffering a broken foot in October that kept her out of the first eight games before she returned to action against Cal State Fullerton. Still, the injuries to Young, Cowling, and Nichols have meant that LMU s top three scorers were not on the court together at any time in After season-ending injuries in and , fifth-year senior Jessica Vargas played the first two games of this year before suffering a shoulder injury. She missed seven games and came back at Portland State. Redshirt sophomore Monica DeAngelis, who underwent off-season surgery in August, went down with an ankle injury before the Sacramento State game and missed the next nine games. She returned to limited action in the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic. Although she has not missed any games, junior Lauren Wilkins battled mononucleosis in the pre-season but is back to full strength. Lastly, through all of this is senior Melanie Ysaguirre, who is perhaps the toughest player in the WCC. Ysaguirre played through shoulder and thumb ailments this season before having to miss the Portland State game after suffering a concussion against Cal State Fullerton. Then a day before LMU left for the Seattle tournament, Ysaguirre dislocated her left pinky finger but has continued to play through the pain. The first week of February was particularly debilitating to the Lions. After Nichols was lost for the season on February 3 against San Diego, two more players went down two days later against Saint Mary s. Freshman Mackenzie Kerins dislocated her shoulder and Vargas broke her nose, although she returned later in the contest and will be wearing a mask for the remainder of the games. Kerins is done for the year and also underwent surgery on March. REDEDICATION TO DEFENSE PAYING OFF Head Coach Julie Wilhoit said that during the offseason, the players came to her wanting to rededicate themselves to team defense. That philosophy has shone through in the early going as the Lions are third in the WCC in opponent scoring average (64.6 ppg), which is well ahead of last year s 67.3 ppg. LMU is also forcing 6.5 turnovers per game overall and is third in WCC games with a +3.4 turnover margin. Last season, LMU held an opponent under 60 points on six occasions. That feat has already happened 0 times in 200-, helping the Lions go 7-3 when keeping their foes under 60 points. The Lions have also held 0 opponents under 40% shooting from the floor and are 8-4 when achieving that feat. YOUNG CLIMBS LMU ALL-TIME SCORING CHART Due to the injuries to Cowling and Nichols, much of the scoring load has fallen on senior Renahy Young, who continues to etch her name among the school s elite. Young became the th member of LMU s,000-point club last January 4 at San Francisco and entered the school s career scoring top-0 the next game at Santa Clara. Her ability to move up the list was hampered this year by her own preseason foot injury that sidelined her for the season s first eight games but she has since returned to continue her record climb. She currently sits in third place on LMU s all-time scoring list with,542 points and has already put herself atop two of LMU s alltime record lists. On January 8, she became the school s all-time leader in free throws made at San Diego, breaking current Associate Head Coach Lynn Flanagan s 20-year-old record. A much more recent mark fell in the home contest against San Diego on February 3, when Young topped Lisa Helmers record of 56 career three-pointers, established just last season. After scoring 3 points in her season debut against Cal State Fullerton, Young suffered through a mini-slump before exploding for a career-best five straight games of 20+ points to bridge the new year. A Preseason All-WCC selection in 200-, Young is currently leading the team with a 6.3 ppg scoring average, which she has bumped to 8. ppg in WCC play, third in the conference. This year, Young has put up nine 20-point games and has scored in double figures in 6 of her 20 games overall. For her 0-game career, Young has scored in double figures 80 times, including topping 20 points on 2 occasions. She is also fourth all-time at LMU in career field goals made (499), fifth in free throw percentage (.770), and tied for ninth in steals (75). On March, Young was named to the All-WCC First Team, joining Bryn Britton ( ) as the only Lions in history to earn All-WCC honors in each of their four collegiate seasons. Young also became the sixth player in school history to earn First Team honors twice, having also been placed on the team in Young barely missed her first career double-double at UC Irvine, putting up nine points and a career-high nine rebounds to go along with five steals. She looked to have returned to her pre-injury form at the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic, earning All-Tournament honors after registering 22 points against Seattle and 2 against #4 Notre Dame. She followed that up with 2 points at Saint Mary s and 25 (23 in the second half) in the win at San Diego to earn her fourth career WCC Player of the Week award. For the week, Young averaged 23.0 points, 3.0 steals, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 45.5% from the floor, 35.7% from three, and The Last Time... 7 -for- at the line. Young had her fifth straight 20-point game against Portland, leading all scorers with 22 points as she tied her career-high with five three-pointers. She also had 2 points in the win at San Francisco, 24 at home against San Diego, and closed out her career at Gersten Pavilion with 20 points vs. Santa Clara and 25 on Senior Day against San Francisco. In light of Nichols season-ending injury, Young will honor her friend and teammate by assuming Nichols #22 jersey in place of her usual #0 for the remainder of the year. Young is the second Lion to switch jersey numbers this season after Jessica Vargas swapped out her #2 for #20. BUCKLEY ON THE BOARDS Talk about picking up where you left off. Last season, Camille Buckley came off the bench in the season opener at SMU to pull down 3 rebounds and was averaging 4.5 boards in just 8.4 minutes per game before an injury cut short her season after eight games. Back healthy following a medical redshirt, Buckley has returned to her old ways, ripping down a team-best 9. rebounds per game, which puts her fourth in the WCC and 59th in the nation. She is second in the league in rebounding on the offensive end (3.8 per game) and is shooting 49.6% from the floor while contributing 6.3 ppg in just 22.4 minutes per contest. She has a team-high six double-doubles (five in conference) and has ripped down 0-or-more rebounds in a game on 3 separate occasions. Buckley certainly stepped up her play during the WCC schedule, averaging 8. ppg and a league-best 0.6 rpg on 50.6% shooting from the field to earn the WCC Newcomer of the Year award and a place on the All-Freshman Team. Buckley tied her career-high with 3 points to go along with nine boards at San Diego, then posted double-doubles in each of the next four games. She exploded for a career-high 8 rebounds against Portland in a game in which she also had 0 points and four assists. The 8 rebounds were tied for the second-most in a single game in LMU history. Buckley followed that with 2 points and 4 rebounds against Gonzaga and 2 points and boards against Pepperdine. She registered her fourth straight double-double with 0 points (all in the second half) and 2 boards at San Francisco. In the Pacific Northwest, she had 0 rebounds at Gonzaga and equaled her scoring career-high with 3 points at Portland. She also had 3 points and 4 boards at Pepperdine and closed out the regular season with 2 boards vs. Santa Clara and 4 vs. San Francisco. 8 eight points) against Long Beach State before grabbing a then-career-high 4 at Sacramento State. She recorded her first career double-double with 3 points and 5 rebounds to go along with four assists (all career-highs at the time) in the win over Cal State Fullerton. Buckley nearly had her double-double in the first half as she concluded the first period with nine points and 0 boards. She also had 0 rebounds at Seattle. RAMIREZ RUNNING THE SHOW Just by stepping foot on the floor at Idaho State on November 2, freshman Hazel Ramirez did something that neither Renahy Young nor Alex Cowling had done at LMU: that is, start the season opener as a freshman. Ramirez, the CIF Division 3AA Southern Section Player of the Year at Inglewood High School, started at the point in each of the first 0 games this season and has started the most games this year of any Lion with 27 starts in 28 games overall. She is fourth on the team in all-games scoring at 8.6 ppg, which makes her the top-scoring freshman in the conference and 24th overall. She is also pacing the Lions and is 2th in the WCC (and top freshman) at 2.3 assists per game. Ramirez scored in double figures in seven of the first 0 games and is one of four LMU players (Cowling, Young, and Nichols being the others) to have gone over 20 points more than once this year. Ramirez posted careerhighs of 22 points (including five three-pointers) and five assists in the win over Stephen F. Austin, then had 20 to go along with four rebounds, four steals, and four assists in the victory at Cal State Northridge. In the season opener at Idaho State, Ramirez had one of those freshman moment games, shooting -for-7 and fouling out with just four points. But you want your freshmen to learn and Ramirez did just that, bouncing back with all of her 5 points in the first half against Long Beach State to spur LMU s rout. She matched that total with 5 points against Cal Poly and Sacramento State before exploding for career-highs of 22 points and five assists and in the win over Stephen F. Austin. Her free throws made in that game tied for the ninth-most in a single game in LMU history. The speedster has knocked down 38 three-pointers (second-most on the team) and is shooting 30.6% from distance, good enough for 4th in the league. She is also 4th in the WCC in threes made per game (.4). Ramirez closed out the regular season by scoring in double figures in three of the final four games. She had points at Portland, 0 vs. Santa Clara, and 3 points, five rebounds, and four assists against San Francisco. TOUGHNESS PERSONIFIED You ll have to scour the land to find a player who has dealt with, and played through, more injuries this season than LMU s other senior, forward Melanie Ysaguirre. A starter for much of the last two years, Ysaguirre is again doing the dirty work for the Lions despite battling through a litany of injuries. Ysaguirre has been playing with wraps on her left shoulder and left thumb all season but refused to sit out the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic after dislocating her left pinkie finger on the eve of the team s travel. The only game that Ysaguirre has missed in her entire career was the Portland State contest, which was due to a concussion she suffered against Cal State Fullerton. All told, Ysaguirre is sixth all-time at LMU with 7 games played and ninth in rebounds with 55. Ysaguirre has played an average of 22. minutes but is grabbing 5.2 rebounds per contest, second-most on the team and 2th in the conference. Much of her damage has been done on the offensive glass, where she has grabbed 8 of her 59 boards (58%) and is fourth in the WCC in offensive boards per game with 3.0. She also has 29 assists, fifth-most on the team. She shot 48.% in WCC play. Two days after suffering her dislocated finger, Ysaguirre pulled down a season-high 2 rebounds at Seattle to help LMU snap a three-game losing streak. She also had nine rebounds against Gonzaga and eight points and 0 boards in the win at San Francisco. COLLISHAW CATCHING FIRE Sophomore Courtney Collishaw got hot just as the Lions needed her the most. After Nichols went down with her injury, Collishaw stepped into her role and put up back-to-back career-highs with 3 points against San Diego and 8 against Saint Mary s. In WCC play, she averaged 6.6 ppg on 43.4% shooting from the floor. She missed just one shot attempt over the first three WCC games, then had eight points, nine points, and eight points against Gonzaga, Pepperdine, and San Francisco, respectively. The transfer from UC Santa Barbara was on also hot streak earlier in the season when she knocked down at least one three-pointer in a five-game stretch between Sacramento State and UCLA. She is fourth on the team in makes from distance with 20. One of two Lions to start each of the first 2 games (Nichols being the other), Collishaw is averaging 5.9 ppg overall. CALL HER PROFESSOR VARGAS It is a good thing that fifth-year senior Jessica Vargas wants to be a doctor because she has learned a lot about the human body throughout her career. Vargas might be one of the unluckiest players on the basketball court but she is proving that luck has no part of her success in the classroom. Vargas underwent season-ending surgery in two of the last three seasons but came back to LMU for a fifth year. Two games into this season, she went out with a shoulder injury and missed the next seven games before returning at Portland State. She added to her injury sheet with a broken nose suffered against San Diego on February 5. While sidelined, Vargas helped the young players learn and her teammates would be wise to listen to her as she in became the university s first-ever Rhodes Scholarship finalist and was named Scholar of the Year, the institution s highest academic honor. A 4.0 student who graduated in May with her degree in biochemistry, Vargas is currently pursuing a Master s degree in education. This spring, she is also teaching a class at KATE MURRAY INDUCTED INTO LMU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Considered one of the best women s basketball players to ever play at LMU, Kate Murray ( 04) became the fourth LMU women s basketball player to enter the LMU Hall of Fame, joining current assistant coach Lynn Flanagan (elected in 200), Sherri Brown (elected in 2003), and Bryn Britton (elected in 2009). Murray led the Lions to the WCC Championship and a school-record 24 victories that season. Murray enters the prestigious group ranked second all time at LMU in points with,566. Murray was named first team All-WCC twice in her career, once in 2002 and again in Her senior season proved to be a big year, as she also garnered LMU s Female Athlete of the Year, WCC Player of the Year, and LMU and WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In that same season, Murray established a single-season record for free throw percentage with a mark of.883, besting her own previous record of.857. In addition to holding the first and second spots in the singleseason books for free throw percentage, she also places second in points (492), fifth in scoring average (6.40), seventh in three pointers (48), and eighth in free throw throws (06). Furthermore, she owns the fifth (69) and 0th (60) spots in field goals made. Murray pervades the Top-0 list in a number of career categories as well, ranking second in field goals (580), second in free throw percentage (.83), fifth in assists (329), sixth in scoring average (2.70), sixth in steals (98), sixth in blocks (57), seventh in three pointers (06), and 0th in rebounds (480). Murray will join Edit Pakay (women s tennis/cross country, 2003), Arturo Torres (men s soccer, 2002), Kevin Witt (men s water polo, 2003), the 950 Loyola football team, and the 989 women s rowing four that won a national championship as the newest members of the LMU Hall of Fame. The four individuals bring the number of members in the Hall of Fame, which was started in 986, to 08. The two teams will be the fifth and sixth inducted into the Hall of Fame, as they join the 969 football team, the 98 women s rowing team, the 990 men s basketball team, and the 986 baseball team. The Hall of Fame induction took place on Saturday, January 29 and the honorees were recognized during halftime at the LMU men s basketball game against Santa Clara. 8

9 LMU IN THE WCC LMU, adding the title of professor to her resume as she instructs an undergraduate organic chemistry lab. On the court, Vargas had an adventurous start to WCC play. Prior to the opener at Saint Mary s, she discovered that she had forgotten her game jersey at the hotel. Wearing #20 instead of her normal #2, she didn t seem to let that bother her as she promptly went out and turned in a perfect night: 4-for-4 from the floor and 5-for-5 at the line for 4 points, her highest total since November 9, At the tail end of that game, she also broke her shoe. No worries, at San Diego, still wearing #20 and a recently-purchased pair of sneaks, she had six points, four boards, and three steals. Vargas also had 2 points at Portland. She is averaging 6.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg, and.7 spg in WCC play (th in the conference). NICHOLS SUFFERS SEASON-ENDING INJURY Junior Candice Nichols became the second Lion this year to be lost for the remainder of the season due to injury after tearing her ACL on February 3 against San Diego. In the previous game, Nichols had registered a careerhigh 33 points at Santa Clara but she fell awkwardly while attempting a shot eight minutes into the San Diego game. Nichols was the only Lion to score in double figures in each of the season s first 2 games and reached that mark in 9 of her 22 games overall. Just one game prior to her injury, she exploded for a career-high 33 points at Santa Clara to register the most points in the WCC this season and most by a Lion since Bryn Britton had 34 against Long Beach State on December 6, 200. It tied for the sixth-most in a single game in LMU history. COWLING DONE FOR THE YEAR For a player who had just come off of probably the best four-game stretch of her career, the news was not pleasant for junior Alex Cowling, who will miss the rest of the season due to a foot injury. At the time of her injury, Cowling was leading the WCC and was eighth in the nation in scoring (22.5 ppg) and was tops in the WCC in three-point percentage (46.2%) and offensive rebounds per game (4.0). She was also second in the conference in free throw percentage (89.3%) and fourth in rebounding (8.5). She followed that up with 27 points and eight rebounds in the win over Stephen F. Austin and completed the week with 2 points against #7 Georgia to earn All-Tournament honors at the Courtyard by Marriott Los Angeles Westside Thanksgiving Classic. Cowling reached the,000-point mark in just 64 career games, becoming the 2th player in LMU history in the club and the fastest to get there, beating Bryn Britton s previous record of 64 games. Prior to last season, the last time an LMU player reached,000 career points was back in Now, the Lions have two in two years. After Renahy Young scored her,000th career point at San Francisco last January 4, Cowling entered the year on 927 career points and immediately led the team in scoring in each of the season s first four games, piling in 96 points in that span. Playing just 60 miles from her hometown of Benicia, Cowling reached the milestone at the 2:48 mark of the first half on November 22 at Sacramento State with an offensive rebound put-back. Young and Cowling are the first set of LMU teammates to have,000 career points since Kate Murray and Adrienne Slaughter in Cowling next turns her attention to the LMU career scoring charts. With,062 career points, she needs 20 to move up to ninth place. After leading the WCC in scoring during conference-only games last season, Cowling was LMU s top scorer in each of the first six games of In 66 career games, she has scored in double figures 53 times and has 20 performances of 20+ points. She also has 2 double-doubles after having 3 points and rebounds at Cal Poly and 28 points and 4 rebounds at Sac State. A Preseason All-WCC selection in 200-, Cowling tied her career high with 3 points on -for-6 shooting at Cal Poly, equaling her previous single-game best set Feb. 3, 200 at San Francisco. That output is tied for ninth-highest in a single-game in LMU history and makes her the second player in LMU history with multiple games of 3+ points, joining Bryn Britton, who had three. Cowling earned her third career West Coast Conference Player of the Week honor on November 22 after leading the Lions in scoring in wins over Long Beach State and at Cal Poly. Cowling averaged 25.0 points and 0.0 rebounds per game to move within five points of joining the,000 point club. On Monday against Long Beach State, Cowling had a teamhigh 9 points to go along with nine rebounds in LMU s first win of the season, She followed that up with her th career double-double and tying her career-high with 3 points in a victory at Cal Poly. Cowling scored 22 points in the second half and added rebounds to turn a three-point halftime lead into comfortable win. For the week, Cowling shot 53.3% from the floor, 50% from three, and 94.4% from the line. AWAY FOR THE HOLIDAYS Starting December at Portland State, LMU embarked on a seven-game road trip, which tied for the longest in program history and is the longest in more than a decade. The Lions last trotted out on the road for seven consecutive games from December 4, 998-January 2, 999. LMU also endured seven-game road trips way back in and When the Lions returned to Gersten Pavilion on January 3 to face Portland, they had been gone for 33 days and traveled 8,686 miles. LMU went 3-4 on the road trip. PUTTING UP BIG NUMBERS LMU exploded for 94 points against Stephen F. Austin on November 26, marking the most points for the Lions in regulation since scoring 94 against Gonzaga way back on February 5, Not counting the 0 points scored in this year s exhibition game against The Master s College, the Lions last hit 90 points in a 94-9 home loss to Portland this past January. The 94 points tied for the fourth-most in a single game in LMU history. HOT SHOTS Keeping with the win over Stephen F. Austin, LMU shot a blistering 64% in the second half and finished the game at 55.9% overall, tying for the eighth-best single-game shooting percentage in program history. It was the team s best performance from the floor since shooting 58.8% against Saint Louis almost a year to the day prior, which coincidentally also came in the Thanksgiving Classic semifinal on November 27, NEEDING TO FIND THE OFFENSE In the games following Cowling s injury, the Lions struggled to find the 22.5 points per game to make up in her absence. That resulted in the Lions having the dubious distinction of being held under 40 points in three consecutive games for the first time in school history. Prior to this year, LMU had only failed to reach 40 points in a game 4 times in its 30-year history and had not been held under 40 points since December 5, 996. It has happened four times this year. DECADE OF DOMINANCE VS. THE BIG WEST LMU has long enjoyed success against the Big West Conference, posting a 39-7 record against BWC representatives since The Lions are continuing that trend in 200-, having gone 4- against the conference with victories over Long Beach State, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, and Cal State Fullerton. LMU s only losses to the conference since have come to UC Irvine. FOUR INKED TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT LMU women s basketball has signed four players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, Head Coach Julie Wilhoit announced Wednesday. The Lions will be bringing in a pair of guards, Danielle Pruitt and Taylor Anderson, and a pair of forwards, Ashley Lovett and Emily Ben- Jumbo, for the 20-2 season. We were focusing on speed, power and offensive prowess in this class and we believe we captured that and more in these four young women, Wilhoit said. We are most excited because we have recruited them all for a long time and have gotten to know them and their families well. We could not be any happier with this class. In the backcourt, LMU welcomes two local players in Danielle Pruitt of View Park Prep in Los Angeles and Taylor Anderson of Bonita High School in La Verne. Pruitt, a 5-8 combo guard, averaged 6 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game as a junior as she earned Division IV All-State honors. A First Team All-City selection in each of the last two seasons and the Coliseum League Most Valuable Player last year, Pruitt put up a triple-double during the city playoffs last season. Pruitt should add some speed to the Lion backcourt, having won the 00m dash in her league finals. Pruitt is already familiar with her future Lion teammates as she played alongside current Lion freshmen Hazel Ramirez and Alexis Love on the Cal Sparks club team. Keen-eyed fans will also recognize that she is the younger sister of former USC standout and Boston Celtic Gabe Pruitt. Joining Pruitt in the backcourt will be Anderson, who was a First Team All-CIF Division 3A selection as a junior. The 5- Anderson averaged.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.0 apg, and 2.0 bpg in leading Bonita High School to the CIF 3A semifinals. She is a two-time All-Miramonte League player and was named to the All-San Gabriel Valley Tribune First Team last season. LMU s frontcourt will get a boost from a pair of six-footers in Ashley Lovett and Emily Ben-Jumbo. Lovett, a 6-0 small forward from Murrieta, is currently the 36th-ranked forward in the country by Hoopgurlz.com. Lovett averaged a double-double of 4 ppg and 0 rpg, to go along with two spg for Vista Murrieta High School in earning First Team All-Southwestern League and First Team All-Valley honors. Lovett is also an excellent student, having won First Team All-Academic honors from the Southwestern League. Lovett is another product of Cal Sparks, one of the top club teams in California. Rounding out LMU s early signees is Ben-Jumbo, a 6- power forward from Tualatin, Oregon. Ben-Jumbo registered 3 ppg and eight rpg as a junior and is currently ranked as the 20th forward in the country by Hoopgurlz.com. A First Team All-Pacific Conference and Honorable Mention All-State selection, Ben-Jumbo was named one of the strongest players in Oregon by SLAM Magazine. 0

12 2 Julie Wilhoit enters her 6th season as the head coach of the Loyola Marymount University women s basketball program. The West Coast Conference Coach of the Year three of her seasons at LMU, she has steered the Lions to an average of 7 wins a season from , including LMU s first ever WCC Championship, an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and an appearance in the WNIT Tournament in The Lions have also been invited to play in the Preseason WNIT twice in the last six years. At home that record becomes even more astounding as Wilhoit s Lions are in Gersten Pavilion over the last nine years. Wilhoit became the winningest coach in LMU women s basketball history with a victory over IUPUI on December 8, On February 2, 2008, she recorded her 300th career win as a head coach with a victory at San Francisco. She reached 200 victories at LMU just over a year later, hitting the milestone in LMU s 7-60 win over Santa Clara at the WCC Tournament on March 7, Wilhoit was the first LMU women s basketball coach to earn the WCC Coach of the Year honor in She repeated the feat the following year to become only the second coach in WCC history to garner the award two years in a row. In 2004, she added to her honors by winning the WCC award for the third time in five years. She was also named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Regional Coach of the Year for Region 8. The region represents head coaches from the Pac-0, Big West, and West Coast Conferences. She was a national finalist for the NCAA Division I Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year award. In 5 seasons on the Bluff, Wilhoit has led LMU through a march from the bottom half of the conference finishers to the top. Due in large part to Wilhoit s direction and leadership, the Lions have become a consistent top tier WCC team and broke into the national spotlight with their record-breaking season in That year, the Lions finished with the best record west of Montana, and the 3th best record in the nation. LMU received votes in both the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll and the AP poll. Under Wilhoit s direction, the program has continued a process of constant improvement. The squad exemplified that by recording the program s first ever 20-win season. The Lions posted a 5-3 overall mark for the program s first ever back-to-back winning seasons, and the team shattered LMU s record books. In , Wilhoit and the Lions went 24-6 overall and ran through the West Coast Conference with a 3- record. After dropping their season-opener, the Lions rattled off eight straight victories. Much of LMU s success came at home, where they posted an impressive 2- mark in Gersten Pavilion. The only loss was to #4 Duke in the LMU Marina del Rey Marriott Beach Classic. Once WCC play began, an away loss at Gonzaga was no deterrent to the start of the conference season. The Lions bounced back by winning the next 5 games, a school-record, to close out the regular season and sweep through the WCC Tournament for the program s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. LMU earned a #3 seed and faced fourth-seeded Baylor in the first round, putting up a valiant effort before succumbing The campaign jump-started the Lions to close out the decade. LMU has recorded at least 5 victories each year since and has not finished below.500. The and teams both advanced to the WCC Tournament Semifinals, with the squad making it to the WCC Championship Game, one game shy of another NCAA Tournament bid. Most recently, the team posted 8 victories and also advanced to the WCC Semifinals. In , LMU came within a whisker of its second NCAA Tournament appearance, making it to the West Coast Conference championship game. The Lions finished that campaign with a 9-2 mark. Some of the greatest players in LMU women s basketball history have played under Coach Wilhoit. Kate Murray (03-04) became the first Lion to earn WCC Player of the Year honors, and Bryn Britton ( ) was LMU s first three-time All-Conference selection. Adrianne Slaughter earned WCC Tournament MVP honors in and JULIE WILHOIT Head Coach Marian 85 6th Year at LMU ( ) 23rd Year Overall ( ) was a two-time All-WCC honoree as well as the Defensive Player of the Year. In recent years, Wilhoit has seen Amanda DeCoud ( ) also garner Defensive Player of the Year accolades while Alex Cowling was the conference s Newcomer of the Year in In total, Wilhoit has coached 34 All-WCC performers. A strong believer in the LMU philosophy, Wilhoit is dedicated to excellence in academics, as well as athletics. She has coached a number of highly decorated student-athletes including the WCC and LMU Scholar-Athlete of the Year Kate Murray. In 200, Jessica Vargas became the first LMU student to ever become a Rhodes Scholarship finalist and she later became the first student-athlete to win the university s highest academic honor, Scholar of the Year. Wilhoit was appointed the fourth head coach in LMU women s basketball history on June 30, 995. Wilhoit came to LMU in July 995 after a two-year stint at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford where she posted a mark of 33-26, including a school-record 22- mark in A head coaching veteran of 22 years, Wilhoit has an overall coaching record of She coached for five seasons at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis where she posted a record of including a 45-7 mark in her final two seasons. Wilhoit led IUPUI to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 990 and 99 and a Final Four appearance in 99, where IUPUI lost to Southwestern Oklahoma in the semi-finals. After a two-year coaching hiatus, Wilhoit rejoined the coaching ranks at Pitt-Bradford and took over a team that had posted a 4-20 record the year prior to her arrival. With nearly the same personnel from the previous season, the team posted an -5 overall mark, one of the biggest turnarounds in collegiate basketball that season. The following season, she led the team to its best record ever at 22- and helped it advance to the championship game of the Keystone Empire Collegiate Conference. Following her successes at IUPUI and Pitt-Bradford, Wilhoit was hired at LMU to rebuild the women s basketball program. In her first year as the Lions head coach, Wilhoit led the team to a non-conference winning season, the first since The squad also beat Santa Clara on the road, marking the program s first conference road win since the season. Wilhoit is also active on basketball committees nationally, serving on the WBCA (Women s Basketball Coaches Association) Board of Directors as the West representative. She has served on several Player of the Year and All-American committees, including the State Farm Wade Trophy and Kodak All-American. Wilhoit enjoyed a decorated basketball career at Marian College in Indianapolis, Indiana. A four-year letterwinner, Wilhoit once held the school s career scoring record with,489 points and ranks among career leaders in steals and rebounds. She was a two-time team Most Valuable Player and earned NAIA all-district honors following her junior and senior seasons. In 2004, Wilhoit was elected to the Marian College Athletics Wall of Fame. A 985 graduate, she earned her bachelor s degree in physical education from Marian College. While coaching at IUPUI, she earned her master s degree in education from Indiana University in 988. Wilhoit began her coaching career at Marian College as an assistant coach during the season. Wilhoit s professional work experience falls outside of the realm of coaching as well. In 996 she helped co-found Sneaker Sisters, a non-profit community organization which promotes sports and fitness to economically disadvantaged girls on the westside of Los Angeles. Wilhoit currently serves as an honorary board member for the non-profit organization. She also served as the Director of Fitness at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport in Indianapolis from She is active in community service in the Los Angeles area, including the local YWCA. In the spring of 2005, Wilhoit was honored for her community services efforts by being named the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside Woman of the Year. She was also chosen to receive one of LMU s Herstory awards as part of Women s History Month. Born in Greensburg, Indiana, Wilhoit grew up in the small town of Osgood - population 2,000. She played basketball and graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in 98, a high school rich in basketball tradition. In 2006, Wilhoit was named to the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame. Wilhoit currently resides in Culver City.
