Since 2005, however, FAU has won four out of the last six. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the University s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all started back in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affected the citrus industry and left Mr. DeLand in financial trouble, Mr. Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. When, at Mr. DeLand s request, Mr. Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889, the school was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in 1901, and the nickname Hatter was used then and is still used today. HANDLING HAVOC DIFFICULT AT VCU VCU forced Stetson into 22 turnovers - seven more than in any other game to that point in the season - and defeated the Hatters by a score of in Richmond on Nov. 28. Notes - Joel Naburgs and Chris Perez led Stetson with 16 points and 15 points, respectively in the loss. The former added three assists and two steals, while the latter chipped in with four rebounds. - The full court pressure by the Rams made it difficult for Stetson to get into their halfcourt set all game long, which held the Hatters starting frontcourt of Adam Pegg and Willie Green to a combined total of five points in the defeat.

Attendance: 615 Score by periods 1st 2nd Total Florida A&M Stetson DELAND, Fla. - Never trailing the entire game, the Stetson men s basketball team (1-1) opened up its home slate of contests with a convincing victory over Florida A&M (0-2) on Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center. Senior Adam Pegg led the Hatters with 19 points, on eight-of-ten shooting from the field, to help Stetson improve to 1-1 on the season. I m proud of our guys, Head Coach Casey Alexander said after the game. I think we really competed for 40 minutes. It wasn t pretty the entire time. We had much more success on both sides of the floor in the first half, but our guys are really trying hard to do what we ask them to do, which is goal number one for a coach. The Hatters scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper from the top of the key by junior Willie Green, and there was no looking back from there. Stetson opened up to a 14-7 advantage less than five minutes in when junior Aaron Graham nailed a three-pointer and then connected on a pair of free throws in consecutive Hatter possessions. SU extended its lead to double digits for the first time when Green slammed home a tip dunk with 9:42 to play in the first, giving Stetson a advantage midway through the period. After a layup by the Rattlers, freshman Leke Solanke matched Green with a thunderous tip dunk of his own, igniting the Stetson crowd and sending the Hatters on a run that extended the lead to 19 four times before the half ended. Stetson went on a 10-1 run, beginning with a layup by senior Liam McInerney with 8:12 to play in the half, and concluding with a nice post move by Pegg with 5:27 remaining. The stretch gave the Hatters a lead. More than anything, we had the patience we want [in the first half], Alexander continued. In preparation we talked about taking a great shot for our team, and for the most part we really did that. We threw the ball into the post seven times in the first half, and we scored on all seven possessions. That s a group of players that are trying to do what we ask them to do. A layup in the lane by freshman Logan Irwin, and a three-pointer by senior Joel Naburgs got Stetson out to a similarly hot start in the second half. The 27-point lead that Graham gave the Hatters on a breakaway dunk with 17:39 to play in the game slowly began to fade as the Rattlers started hitting some shots, and the Hatters went a bit cold. Florida A&M used a 10-0 run midway through the period to cut the lead to with 8:33 to play on a layup by Jamari Bradshaw. After Alexander called a 30 second timeout to rally the troops, the Hatters fed the ball into the post to Pegg to stop the bleeding. The Stetson center scored in the paint to stop the FAMU run. We called a couple plays to get the ball inside, Alexander said. Adam s a guy that can get us a basket or a foul, and our guys know that. He wants that challenge, and our guys know that we can count on him. It was great that when we went to him, he delivered, and settled the storm a little bit. Graham, Perez, and Pegg all hit free throws down the stretch as Stetson went on to defeat the Rattlers and improve to 1-1 on the season. Pegg led SU with 19 points, while Graham added 16, Naburgs chipped in with 11, and Irwin added 10. Game 3 Nov. 19 Stetson 81, Southeastern 59 DeLand, Fla. Beginning uncharacteristically slow on offense, neither team had scored by the time the first media timeout rolled around at the 15:59 mark in the first half. In fact, the Fire gained the advantage first, scoring with 15:41 to play and again a minute and a half later, before the Hatters ever got on the board. We re a good offensive team so I kind of assumed it would come sooner rather than later, but yeah you re concerned when you don t get off to a good start, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said following the game. Junior Aaron Graham came off the bench and tallied the Hatters first five points of the contest, knocking down a three just over six and a half minutes into play, and a runner in the lane less than a minute later to cut the Southeastern lead to 6-5 nearly midway through the period. A three-pointer from senior Joel Naburgs gave Stetson its first lead of the game, at 8-6, but after a triple by the Fire s Brandon Moore, it was a layup by senior Adam Pegg that put the Haters on top 10-9, a lead the team did not relinquish the rest of the way. A pair of blocks within 20 seconds of each other by freshman Leke Solanke seemed to energize the Hatters as a 12-0 run gave Stetson a 20-9 lead with just 6:29 to play in the half. Senior Liam McInerney capped the stretch with a three on an assist from Naburgs. After a two-pointer by SEU s timothy Jickell stopped the run, Stetson rattled off 12-2 run over the final 5:08 of the half to take a lead at the break. A commanding block by junior Willie Green, which led to a break that ended with a long range bounce pass from sophomore Dennis Diaz to a streaking Perez, highlighted the stretch. Perez finished, got fouled, and knocked down the free throw for his first of two conventional three-point plays on the night. A backdoor layup by Naburgs on an assist from freshman Logan Irwin opened the second half, but Southeastern quickly countered with an 8-2 run that cut Stetson s lead to with 17:51 to play in the period. It was a Perez three-pointer that ended the Fire momentum, and after a steal by Graham, a nice move in the post by Pegg put the Stetson lead back up to 20 points at It was just over eight minutes later that Perez was at it again, giving the Hatters their largest lead of the game, a advantage with 8:50 to play. The junior guard converted a traditional three-point play, and then a triple from beyond the arc within 20 seconds of each other, which allowed Stetson to cruise to the buzzer. I m proud of Chris, Alexander said. It was great to see him come through at a time when we really needed somebody to come through. You can always count on Chris playing hard. Chris wants to be good, and he s a guy you can depend on, so I m glad to see that he carried us. A game that was physical, and a bit out of control at times, featured a number of hard fouls and a couple of moments of retaliation. One of those came at the 11:32 mark in the second half when Pegg retaliated on a hard foul on one end of the floor with one of his own, which was called flagrant. Pegg was forced to leave the game, finishing the night with 14 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. It marked the first back-to-back wins for Stetson since victories over Jacksonville and North Florida in January of last season. Moreover, Monday night s win gave the Hatters back-to-back 20+ point triumphs for the first time since November of the season.

Attendance: 1241 Score by periods 1st 2nd Total Bethune-Cookman Stetson DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson men s basketball team (2-2) lost at home for the first time this season, falling to South Florida (4-2) by a score of on Monday night. Senior Joel Naburgs led the Hatters with 18 points on four three-pointers in the defeat. With such small margin for error, like we had in this game, you have to win the free throw battle, you have to shoot a high percentage, and you have to have guys really rise up when their time is called, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said after the game. Not to discredit anybody - our effort was great - it just wasn t our night to finish it off. Not only was the effort there for the Hatters, but the quality of play was as well, as the team went toe-to-toe with the Bulls until the final few minutes of the game. Stetson tied the game for the fifth and final time of the night when a pair of free throws from junior Aaron Graham made it with 3:50 left to play. Unfortunately, USF quickly went on an 8-0 run to put the Hatters out of reach and leave DeLand with the win. I felt like our guys played hard enough to win the game, Alexander said. I m really proud of their effort. I think they thought they could win the game, they played like they were going to win the game, but we just simply weren t good enough down the stretch. I don t think it s anything they did, or we didn t do. We had some great looks, they just didn t fall in. A team that used defense to advance all the way to the Third Round of last year s NCAA Tournament, the Bulls tough and physical style of play forced another slow start for the Hatters on Monday. Stetson, which was averaging 82.7 points per game coming into the night, only had three points at the first media timeout. Fortunately for SU, its opponents had been shut out at the first break for the second straight contest, as Stetson led USF 3-0 through 4:19. As the two teams got comfortable, it was South Florida that took the early advantage, using a 9-2 run to take an lead and force a Stetson timeout with 8:01 to play in the first half. The Hatters stopped the bleeding with a layup by junior Chris Perez, and then went on a 7-1 run to tie the game back up at when a long two-pointer by Graham was good at the 4:35 mark. After a Naburgs triple cut the USF lead to one point at the break, the senior guard scored seven out of the Hatters first nine points of the second half to give Stetson a lead with 15:45 to play. Unfortunately for SU, the Bulls soon went on a 7-0 run, which included five points from Jawanza Poland, and USF held a lead midway through the second half. The late eight straight points by the Hatters tied the game one final time, but it wasn t enough to escape with the victory. I m sure that was part of it, Alexander said about USF physicality playing a part in the loss. They hang their hat on defense, and regardless of what our offense was, or who we had playing, it was going to be tougher to come by tonight. 54 is a really low number for our team. You throw [fatigue] on top of playing a really physical team, and it wore us down a bit. Naburgs led Stetson with 18 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. His quartet of triples gave the senior 135 in his career, one shy of the sixth spot in the Stetson record books. Graham added 15 points and a team high seven rebounds. Junior Willie Green chipped in with 11 points, six boards, two assists, and two blocks in the defeat. RICHMOND, Va. - The Stetson men s basketball team (2-3) fell behind early and never recovered against a battle tested VCU (4-3) squad, falling to the Rams by a score of on Wednesday night in Richmond. Known for their stifling style of defense, the Rams forced the Hatters into 22 turnovers, which is seven more than in any other game this season for Stetson. VCU turned that into 32 points off of turnovers, and 17 fast break points. In front of a raucous 21st consecutive sellout Verizon Wireless Arena, the Rams forced Stetson to 34.0 (16-of-47) percent shooting from the floor and just 16.7 (3-of-18) percent shooting from beyond the arc. That is over 20 percentage points less than the team s 37.6 percent average. However, it was offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities that hurt the Hatters in the early going. Nine boards on the offensive glass for the Rams turned into 13 second chance points, and got VCU out to a lead at the break. Stetson was hanging in there with the Rams to start, as a backdoor pass from freshman Logan Irwin found senior Joel Naburgs for a layup to tie the game at 2-2. VCU center Juvonte Reddic quickly countered with his second straight basket to give the Rams a lead they would not give up the rest of the contest. The Hatters found success in taking it to the athletic Rams, forcing VCU to foul Stetson early on. Free throws by junior Willie Green, senior Adam Pegg, and junior Chris Perez were followed by a driving basket from Perez to keep Stetson in the game a 9-8 with 13:48 to play in the first half. An 11-2 run from the Rams increased the Stetson deficit to 10 points at 20-10, and that s when VCU found its rhythm. The Hatters went into the break down 19 points when a three-pointer, a steal, and a fast break layup gave VCU the momentum. After VCU extended its lead to as many as 28 early in the second half, Stetson used a 13-0 run to get back within 15 points, at with 12:12 to play. Seven straight points by Perez - on a triple and two drives to the basket - were sandwiched between six free throws from Naburgs and Irwin. That was when the Rams showed why they recently defeated #19 Memphis, fell to #5 Duke by just nine, and dropped a tight game to #13 Missouri. VCU is a very good team, and proved it by outscoring Stetson over the rest of the game Wednesday night. Stetson was led by Naburgs, who scored 16 points, dished out three assists, and picked up two steals. Perez added 15 points and four rebounds, while Irwin chipped in with nine points and three assists. Green led the Hatters with eight rebounds. Continuing with the quality team play that led to Stetson leading the nation in assists per game as of Monday, the Hatters were once again very efficient on Wednesday night. SU recorded just 16 field goals, but 14 of them were assisted baskets. We re really disappointed, obviously, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said after the game. They re a great team, and you have to play great to give yourselves a chance, and we played anything but that. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Stetson men s basketball team (2-4) allowed Bethune-Cookman (3-6) to shoot 63.5 percent from the field and lost by a score of on Monday evening in Daytona. Senior Adam Pegg led the Hatters with 17 points in the defeat. They played harder, and they played better, Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said following the game. There really isn t any other explanation needed. They played better in every facet of the game. We picked things up a bit in the second half, but we dug too big of a hole to start. The Wildcats used an up-tempo style and lights out shooting from beyond the arc to take the early advantage over the Hatters. B-CU forced Stetson into turnovers on its first three possessions, and five within the first five minutes of play to jump out to an 11-3 lead. B-CU hit on 5-of-7 three-point attempts by the 7:14 mark, including a pair from a couple of feet beyond the arc, to extend its lead to over the Hatters. Senior Kevin Dukes was a perfect 3-for-3 during the stretch. Stetson trailed by as many as 25 points in the first half, as the Wildcats scored nine straight points to take a lead on Dukes s fourth triple of the period with 2:49 remaining. B-CU went on to hold a halftime advantage. The Hatters committed 12 turnovers during the opening frame, which was more than entire games against Miami (11) and USF (9). Junior Willie Green led Stetson with six points, while Pegg added four during the half. Stetson came out determined to cut into the deficit in the second half, and did so by limiting turnovers and getting the ball inside to Pegg. The Hatter center scored seven out of the team s first 13 points to start the frame, helping to trim the B-CU lead to just 14 at with 14:19 to play. The Hatters got as close as 13 when a triple by junior Aaron Graham made it with 10:22 to play, but the Wildcats didn t skip a beat as they produced quality possession after quality possession to increase their lead to as many as 23 twice, including the final score of Bethune-Cookman shot 63.5 percent from the field for the game, their highest mark in at least the last 15 years. The Wildcats finished 7-for-14 from beyond the arc. Adrien Coleman led B-CU with 29 points on 13-of-14 from the field. Stetson was led by Pegg s 17 points, while Graham added 12 points, on three triples, and a team high four assists. Senior Joel Naburgs led the Hatters with seven rebounds and added seven points in the defeat. SU finished with 19 turnovers, managing to only lose the ball seven times in the second half. Next up for Stetson is a two-game home-stand. The Hatters will host Florida Atlantic on Thursday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m., and Florida International on Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m.
