This will be the third meeting between the two in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with the two splitting a pair on their respective home courts. Purdue won the 2003 game, 76-64, while 18thranked Clemson won in 2007, The first two games between the two schools went into overtime, with Clemson winning both games. The Tigers won in and in Clemson forced 38 turnovers by Purdue in the game, still the second-highest figure by a Tiger opponent on record. The Tigers blocked 11 shots in the win, including four apiece by Trevor Booker and Raymond Sykes. Clemson guard K.C. Rivers had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win. A common link from the game was Rick Ray, assistant coach for Purdue at the time. He later coached for two seasons under Brad Brownell at Clemson ( ). Scouting the Boilermakers Purdue enters Wednesday s game with a 2-3 overall record and has not played a game since beating UNC Wilmington - one of Brad Brownell s former teams on Nov. 21. Purdue s losses have come to Bucknell, Villanova and Oregon State. The Boilermakers have struggled from long range, connecting on just 26 percent of their three-point shots. But, Purdue s defense has been outstanding. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to 38 percent shooting overall, 30 percent from three. Purdue also owns a strong +7.8 margin in the rebounding column. The Boilers top player so far this year has been Terone Johnson, a guard averaging 11 points per game. In 111 minutes, he only has three turnovers and is shooting 50 percent from long distance. D.J. Byrd, a senior, also averages double figures at 10.8 per contest. Purdue is coached by Matt Painter, who has a stout record in his ninth season leading his alma mater. Game No. 5 Review... Clemson Controls Paint in Triumph Over Marist Clemson used a 22-4 run in the second half to pull away from a pesky Marist team in the fifth place game of the Old Spice Classic at HP Field House on Nov. 25. The win improved the Tigers to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 for the event. Clemson, who improved to 11-0 all-time against teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, were led by senior center Devin Booker, who posted 15 points and 13 rebounds. Adonis Filer added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Milton Jennings added nine and K.J. McDaniels eight for Clemson. The Tigers shot 47 percent for the game, but 57 percent NUMERICAL ROSTER in the second half. Clemson shot just 2-for-9 from three after recording the tournament record for a single game with a.750 accuracy in the second round against UTEP, but it mattered little. The Red Foxes shot just 34 percent for the game. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball early in the opening half of play. Marist made just one of its first 15 field goal attempts, but was able to keep it close as the Tigers shot just 4-for-14 through two timeout breaks. Milton Jennings broke a nearly five-minute drought with a three at the 9:10 mark to give the Tigers their biggest lead at The lead grew to double figures for the first time at 17-6 after McDaniels took a steal the length of the court for his second dunk of the game. Drew Price quickly countered with a 5-0 run of his own, first on a three and then a dunk after a McDaniels turnover. Marist pulled to within one at halftime, 22-21, after Clemson yielded a 15-5 run to end the half. The Tigers shot just 36 percent in the opening frame and were victimized by six turnovers. Marist wasted no time in taking its first lead of the game on a three by Isaiah Morton on its opening possession to start the second half. The Red Foxes scored the game s first seven points of the half, prompting a quick timeout by Brownell. The Tigers answered with an 8-0 run of its own, culminating with a shot from the left block by Booker. The run extended to 20-4 after a Filer putback and rainbow three from Harrison off a semi-break. Clemson pushed its lead to after Filer scored another basket and followed with a full-court pass to a streaking Booker, who flushed it home for his 13th point of the game. A three from Devin Price ended a lengthy Clemson run to make it 50-37, but Rod Hall responded on the other end with a nifty finger roll in the paint. The Tigers closed the game with a third slam from Booker on an alley-oop from Florida native T.J. Sapp. Quick Notes on the Old Spice Classic Clemson went 2-1 in its first trip to Orlando for the event, falling to Gonzaga (57-49) before defeating UTEP (69-48) and Marist (59-44). Milton Jennings was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 11 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Jennings scored a season-high 18 points in the win over UTEP and made a career-best four from outside the arc. K.J. McDaniels also averaged 11 points per game in the event, which included a career-high 17-point outing against UTEP. PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Brad Brownell... Clemson 9-4 All-Time in ACC/Big Ten Challenge With the win over Iowa last season, Clemson moved to 9-4 all-time in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games. The Tigers record is one of the best in the history of the event. The Tigers won five straight in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, including three on the road, from Clemson won at Penn State (2005), Minnesota (2006) and Illinois (2008), and knocked off Ohio State (2004) and Purdue (2007) at home during that span. Clemson has now won four straight challenge games on the road, the first team in the history of the event to accomplish the feat. The Tigers have five overall road wins in the event, more than any other school. Brownell s first coaching gig was as a graduate assisant for Jim Crews at the University of Indianapolis in 1991, where he was promoted to a restricted earnings position from Wednesday s game will be Brownell s first against the Boilermakers and the third team from the state of Indiana he has faced in his career. He previously played Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Valparaiso as the head coach at Wright State. He was 5-3 versus Valpo and 1-0 against IPFW. Matchup of Renowned Xs and Os Coaches on Display Wednesday s game will be the first ever between two highly regarded instructors of the game, Purdue s Matt Painter and Clemson s Brad Brownell. Both are thought to be outstanding when it comes to Xs and Os. Painter owns a career.688 winning percentage, while Brownell is not far behind at.649. Painter is a 1994 graduate of Purdue and took over the reins of the program from legendary Boilermakers Head Coach Gene Keady. Painter played under Keady from and recorded 276 assists, still a top-20 figure in school history. Tigers Balanced Offensively Through Five Games One of the consistent themes of Brad Brownell s teams at Clemson has been balanced scoring. This year s squad appears to be on a similar track. Entering the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, seven different players average at least five points per game, led by Milton Jennings at 10.8 per contest. Jennings and fellow senior Devin Booker, along with junior K.J. McDaniels, have all averaged double digits in the scoring column through five games. Clemson s balance has been reflected by the fact that three different players have led the Tigers in scoring. Booker led the Tigers against Furman and Marist, while Jennings did so versus Presbyterian and UTEP. Freshman guard Adonis Filer was Clemson s leader in the Gonzaga game. Booker Fourth Among Active ACC Players in Rebounds Senior center Devin Booker is fourth among active players in the ACC with 534 career rebounds. Mason Plumlee is first with 786 boards, followed by Richard Howell (717) and Reggie Johnson (690). Booker averaged a team-high 7.0 per game in as a junior, and leads this year s squad with a 7.4 per game figure. Clemson Sets Old Spice Single-Game Shooting Record Clemson struggled to find its three-point shooting touch in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic against Gonzaga, but that was not the case in the Tigers next game against UTEP. Clemson came out on fire and made 10-of-12 in the opening half, just one shy of the Clemson record for three-pointers in a half. The Tigers went on to make 12-of-16, a single-game tournament record for three-point percentage (.750). It was also the fifth-best mark in school history. Milton Jennings and K.J. McDaniels both made four apiece, the first time in school history that two forwards made that many in the same game. It was a career-high for both, while McDaniels was perfect in four attempts. It was also the first time any Tiger duo made at least four in the same game since backcourt mates Tanner Smith and Andre Young achieved the feat against North Carolina in the 2011 ACC Tournament semifinal against North Carolina. The Tigers have yielded just 49.6 points per game through five contests, best in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Three of Clemson s five opponents have failed to surpass 48 points, and all five have scored 57 or less. Clemson s current five-game stretch of holding opponents to 60 or less is a first for the program since the season, when Rick Barnes final team went Dec. 17 through Dec. 30 without allowing five straight opponents to break 60. One of the primary reasons for Clemson s outstanding numbers has been the perimeter defense. The Tigers have held opponents to just 26.9 percent three-point shooting, the second-best figure in the ACC behind Virginia Tech. Clemson held No. 12 Gonzaga to just 57 total points, 37 below its season average entering the Nov. 22 contest. The Zags went on to win the Old Spice Classic. Clemson 16-1 Under Brad Brownell When Holding Opponents to 50 or Less In Brad Brownell s first season, Clemson held seven opponents to 50 points or less and compiled a 6-1 record in those games. The only team to defeat the Tigers when scoring less than 50 points was Virginia, who won on Feb. 2, Clemson held five ACC schools to 50 or less in his first season, including three straight from Jan. 25 through Feb. 2, In comparison, Clemson held a total of eight teams to 50 or less in the two seasons prior to Brownell s arrival, and In , Brownell s second season, the Tigers held seven opponents to 50 points or less. Not surprisingly, the Tigers won all seven games in that scenario, including a dismantling of Georgia Tech at Philips Arena. The team got off to a good start by allowing only 44 points to Presbyterian in its season-opening victory. The Tigers followed with back-to-back games holding UTEP and Marist to under 50 in the Old Spice tournament. Clemson is 16-1 under Brownell when holding opponents to 50 or less. Sapp played one of the best games of his young career in the 2011 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. He scored 13 points at Iowa and helped the Tigers to a win on the road. The 13 points matched a season-best for the Fort Lauderdale, FL native. He made 3-of-6 from long distance and 5-of-9 overall from the field. So far this season, Sapp has started every game and made 4-of-10 from behind the three-point arc. Harrison So Far, So Good in Clemson Debut Damarcus Harrison joined the men s basketball program in August after transferring from Brigham Young University. He signed an athletic aid agreement with Clemson in August, and in late September was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA after the Tigers filed a waiver on his behalf. Harrison, originally from Greenwood, SC, helped the Cougars to the third round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Harrison scored a career-high 12 points against Iona in the NCAA Tournament. He took to the court for the first time as a Tiger on Nov. 5 in the season opener against Presbyterian. Harrison did not disappoint, tallying eight points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of play. The four rebounds marked a career-high, as did his two blocked shots. He followed with a 10-point effort at Furman, his first double figure game since that NCAA tourney contest last March. He added six points against Marist and five versus Gonzaga in the Old Spice Classic. Blossomgame to Red-Shirt Season Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell announced that freshman forward Jaron Blossomgame would use a medical red-shirt and sit out the season. The 6-foot-7 native of Alpharetta, GA has been recovering from a broken leg suffered during a workout in April when he was still enrolled as a senior at Chattahoochee High School. He made a good jump in progress in late September, so we had held out hope he d be ready ahead of schedule, Brownell said. He s still improving consistently, but there has not been a significant enough jump within the last two weeks to let me know that he would be ready. He is enjoying his time at Clemson and is improving physically and mentally as a player. We will 5

6 CLEMSON vs. PURDUE certainly miss him this season; he s a terrific athlete who could help our depth in the frontcourt. But, he ll be better at 22 than he will at 18. Adding Jaron to our 2013 signees - Austin Ajukwa and Patrick Rooks - will be a boost to our team next season. Blossomgame is the most decorated of Clemson s five-man freshman class, earning fourstar status from ESPNU, who rated him the nation s No. 94 prospect in the class of Blossomgame, a first-team AAAA all-state selection last season, averaged 25.8 points per game and was a standout on the 17 and under Georgia Stars AAU squad last summer. This will benefit me in the long run, Blossomgame said. I can gain experience by watching K.J. McDaniels at our small forward position, and see what Coach Brownell wants out of me. Our doctors said I could be 100 percent in January, but I don t want to come back in the thick of the ACC schedule and have a tough time adjusting to college ball. If I tried to play right now, I couldn t produce the way I want to, and that would hold me back from being the best player I could possibly be. Speaking of Injuries... Sophomore guard Devin Coleman, one of Clemson s best players at the end of the season, suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a conditioning drill. He is expected to miss anywhere from 6-8 months of action after undergoing surgery on July 19. Coleman averaged 6.8 points per game over Clemson s final eight contests of his freshman season, which included a team-high 15-point performance in the ACC Tournament against Virginia Tech. Tigers Picked 8th in ACC by Coaches, Media Clemson was picked to finish in eighth place in the ACC by both the head coaches and media prior to the season. For the first time ever, the ACC head coaches predicted the order of finish and voted on preseason individual honors as well. NC State was the overwhelming choice for first place by both, while Wolfpack standouts C.J. Leslie and Rodney Purvis were named ACC Preseason Player and Rookie of the Year, respectively, by both the coaches and media. In the coaches poll, Duke was picked second, followed by North Carolina. Miami and Florida State rounded out the top five. The only difference in the media s top five was a flip-flop with Florida State in fourth and Miami fifth. This is the lowest Clemson has been predicted to finish since the Tigers were tabbed ninth going into the season. Clemson was picked seventh or higher from through the season. Ajukwa, who plays for Cardinal Newman School, is a three-star prospect according to both ESPNU and Rivals.com. The athletic wing is rated the No. 2 senior prospect in the state of South Carolina by ESPNU, and the nation s No. 30 prospect at his position according to the same service. He has been an all-state selection the past two seasons by the High School Sports Report. Ajukwa was named the Statewide SCISA Player-of-the-Year by the same publication after averaging 21 points per game. He added 9.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game defensively. Ajukwa played with the South Carolina Elite on the AAU circuit. Austin is an athletic wing that can play a variety of positions, Brownell said. He had a very good junior year, followed by an outstanding summer. He will be a very good player at Clemson because he can do a lot of different things on the court. He has an ability to create his own shot, and can use his athleticism to make difficult shots at times. Rooks is listed as a three-star prospect by ESPNU, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He is rated the No. 7 prospect in the state of North Carolina by ESPNU, and No. 31 overall at his position. Rooks has led Charlotte Christian School to three consecutive conference crowns and a state runner-up finish in when he teamed with current Virginia Cavalier forward Anthony Gill. Rooks has been an all-conference selection each of the last two seasons. In , he averaged 14 points per game and shot 37 percent from three-point range. Rooks was a member of Team Loaded, a Virginia-based AAU team that won the prestigious Las Vegas FAB 48 Tournament this past summer. Rooks comes from an athletic family. His mother, Velda, was a track athlete at Appalachian State University and his father, Steven, played basketball at nearby Southern Wesleyan. His mother earned a master s degree from Clemson. Patrick is an outstanding shooter with a quick release and deep range, Brownell said. He will help us stretch defenses, and will play with the scoring mentality that you need from a few guys on your team. He s a good pull-up jump shooter. He is a young man who has followed this program for several years and always wanted to wear orange. That is exciting to me. Clemson Tabbed for 2013 Charleston Classic Clemson will take part in the 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, ESPN Regional Television announced in November. Clemson is one of six schools confirmed for the event that will be held at College of Charleston s TD Arena next November. The other schools committed to playing are UAB, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico and Temple. The exact dates of the tournament, as well as the final two participating teams, will be announced at a later date. The 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant will be a bracket-format tournament, featuring 12 games over the three days of competition. The Southern Conference will again serve as the event s sponsoring conference, marking the sixth straight year. Clemson won the inaugural Charleston Classic in 2008 when Oliver Purnell was still the Tigers head coach. The Tigers defeated Hofstra, TCU and Temple in order on their way to winning the championship. Trevor Booker was named Tournament MVP after posting 15 points and 16 rebounds in the final game against Temple. Other past winners of the Charleston Classic are Miami (FL) (2009), Georgetown (2010) and Northwestern (2011). This year s champion will be crowned on Sunday, Nov. 18.
