Their three-point game helped them throughout their 11-0 run to take a lead against the Bearcats and ultimately win the game. Shy Copney led the three-point shooting with five, while Raven Dean made three. Tianna Tarter, Erica Haynes-Overton and Jada Craig are also threats on the three-point line for the Buccaneers this year. SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS ETSU will return one of the most potent offense from a year ago with seven returnees, including four starters. The Bucs are led by senior Tianna Tarter who leads the Bucs in almost every stat category. She is ETSU's most recent 1,000-point scorer and recorded more than 500 points in a single season last year. TARTER EARNS PRESEASON ALL-SOCON HONORS For the third straight year Tianna Tarter earned Preseason All-SoCon honors after leading the Bucs with 19.8 points per game. Tarter earned five POTW awards, including three back-to-back-to-back honors, becoming the first ETSU player to earn that many consecutive awards. BUCS PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH BY THE COACHES In the Preseason Coaches Poll, ETSU was picked to finish fourth behind Mercer (1), Chattanooga (2), and UNCG (3). Mercer received seven first place votes. UNCG received one first place vote. START THE SEASON OFF RIGHT In each of the past four seasons, the blue and gold have registered season opener victories. Last year's season opener win came from Butler with a win. The Bucs in the last four season openers have outscored their opponents, HOME SWEET HOME Since moving to Brooks Gym at the start of the season, the Bucs have been dominant in Johnson City compiling an overall record of inside Brooks Gym. Last season, the Bucs went 8-8 at home, but the year before, they went In , they had just two losses in Brooks Gym. ONE OF 20 Tianna Tarter was named to the 2018 Nancy Lieberman Watch List. This list features the most exclusive point guards in the country. RECORD BREAKING SEASON FOR TARTER IN Junior Tianna Tarter has had one of the best seasons in ETSU history as she became the first Buc player to record at least 500 points, 150 rebounds and 120 assists. WELCOME HOME Graduate transfer Shy Copney will join the Bucs for her final season. Copney is a Johnson City native and Science Hill High School alum. Western Carolina 8 points WHAT A SCHEDULE The Bucs have one of the most daunting schedules in As of Nov. 2, Notre Dame is ranked sixth in the country. The Bucs open up with Notre Dame on Nov. 25 at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The Bucs took on #14 Tennessee. At the Gulf Coast Showcase, the Bucs will either play South Florida or Washington State in their second game. South Florida is ranked #23, while Washington State is not ranked but received one vote. Other opponents ETSU will face who received votes are NC State with six votes and Michigan State with four votes. NEW PERSONAL BEST Tianna Tarter recorded a new personal best of 11 assists against Cincinnati on Nov. 10. She last had ten against Western Carolina last season. SHERER SHINING Freshman Alayjah Sherer earned her first collegiate start against No. 14 ranked Tennessee. She finished the game with a team high of 13 points and tallied five rebounds and added in an assist. Against Cincinnati, she had seven points and five rebounds after coming off the bench for the Bucs. Sherer has been active in ETSU's defense and offense and is a key contributor when starting and coming off the bench. She averaged 4.3 rebounds per game. NEW MATCHUPS This season, the Bucs will play four new opponents; North Greenville, Michigan State, Duquesne, and Notre Dame. Depending on the Gulf Coast Showcase results, the Bucs may add another new opponent to that list with Washington State. DOUBLE-DOUBLES Tianna Tarter recorded her 12th double-double of her career finishing with 14 points and 11 assists against Cincinnati in their home opener. FINISHING IN REGULATION ETSU has not had an overtime game since IS THE MARK Since the season, the Bucs are when they hit the 75-point plateau. DOING WHAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE Tarter is the only player in the NCAA to record a stat line of 35 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Tarter did so against SEC opponent, Vanderbilt on Dec. 8 TARTER S HISTORIC NIGHT VS. VANDY Tarter had a night against Vanderbilt that ETSU fans will never forget pouring in a career-high 35 points on 15-of-28 shooting from the field. Tarter s 35 points was the most by a SoCon player this season while her 15 made field goals ranks as the 3rd most in the NCAA this season. OBJECTS In one of the more odd stats of the season, the Buccaneers are all-time vs. opponents with Animal mascots. The margin is much larger with opponents that have an Human/Object mascot, as the Bucs have a record all-time WOMEN S BASKETBALL SETS ATTENDANCE RECORD Against No.13 Tennessee, the ETSU women s basketball program set a new attendance record of 6,072 as the Bucs and the Lady Vols hit the court. Due to the amount of people the game was moved into the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center, marking the first time ETSU has played a basketball game in the mini-dome since NEWCOMER TO THE STAFF Head Coach Brittney Ezell has added the addition of Assistant Coach Chris Lewis to the coaching squad this season. Lewis comes from George Mason, where he spent the last four seasons. He coached three All-Atlantic 10 performers during his time at George Mason. Lewis is a native of Saint Louis, Mo. and begins his first year with the Bucs. TARTER JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB With 2:23 left in the third quarter vs. Elon, junior Tianna Tarter hit nothing but net on a free-throw to become the 23rd member of ETSU s 1,000-point club. Tarter scored her 1,000 point in her 66th career game. BUCS TO PLAY IN GULF COAST SHOWCASE ETSU will play in the Gulf Cosst Showcase during Thanksgiving this year. They open upt the tournament with Notre Dame who is ranked sixth nationally. From there, they will play the winner/loser of the USF/Washington State game. DIAPER DANDIES ETSU will have new faces on the floor this season as Coach Brittney Ezell welcomes five newcomers to the squad. The five newcomers include freshmen Erica Haynes-Overton and Alayjah Sherer and transfers, Shy Copney, Britney Snowden, and Micah Scheetz. All are eligible to play excpet Scheetz who has to sit out due to the NCAA tranfser rule. DEAN MAKING HER OWN LEGACY Junior Raven Dean is the daughter of former NFL Wide Receiver, Muhsin Muhammed. Muhhamed played 14 seasons in NFL with the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears, appearing in two Super Bowls. DOUBLE DUTY Senior forward Malloree Schurr takes after her head coach by making the most of her time in college playing two sports (basketball and softball). As a junior, Schurr played in started in played in all 30 games for the Bucs, averaging 3.2 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and.574 free throw percentage. On the softball diamond, Schurr led her team to a 2017 SoCon Conference Championship. Schurr hit.264, while making SportsCenter Top 10 three times. BEGINNING HER FIFTH YEAR Head Coach Brittney Ezell enters her fifth year at the helm of the ETSU women's basketball program. Ezell during her time at ETSU has compiled an overall record of and inside the Southern Conference. In 2014, Ezell helped lead the Bucs to a SoCon Tournament Championship appearance. 60 WINS THE BALANCE Last season when scoring at least 60 points, ETSU won their games. They won a total of 16 games when scoring 60 points or more. SECOND HALF SURGE Senior point guard Tianna Tarter did not attempt a shot until early in the third quarter. She still was able to record a double-double, despite such rare sightings on the box score during the first half. OUTSCORING OPPONENTS Last season the Bucs outscored their opponents by exactly 25 points. ETSU score 1,950 points, while holding their opponents to 1,925 points. WANT ON THE LINE If there's someone you want shooting foul shots, that player would be Tianna Tarter who finished with a.744 frree throw percentage last season. INCREASING ATTENDANCE Since Coach Ezell's arrival, ticket sales have increased 3.008%. Last season, the Bucs were second in the SoCon after recording 18,860 in attendance. Since her arrival, she has increased the ticket sales revenue by 3,088%. Last year ETSU ranked second in the SoCon with 18,860 in attendance, while obtaining a new school record crowd of 6,072 against Tennessee. In the last four years, ETSU has finished in the top half of the conference. Ezell is a sought after public speaker as she has been a keynote speaker at the IDEAcademy, CitiBank, FellowShip of Christian Athletes Fundraising Banquet, and many organizations around the ETSU campus and Tri-Cities. She is also a member of the ETSU Standing Women s Committee and a moderator for ETSU Dinners of Distinction. The schedule features an appearance at the Gulf Coast Showcase where the Bucs open the tournament with Notre Dame. In non-conference action, ETSU will host Cincinnati for their home opener, along with Duquesne and Michigan State. In , Ezell and her staff led the Buccaneers to a overall record and went 8-8 in conference action. During the 2016 season, the schedule featured a rigorous non-conference schedule for ETSU, which included home contests against Vanderbilt, Old Dominion and the University of Tennessee. Ezell has constructed difficult non-conference schedules since being hired in 2013, playing a total of 13 teams from power five conferences. Ezell guided Shamauria Bridges and Yamile Rodriguez to sign professional contracts overseas after the conclusion of their seasons. Also in 2106, Tianna Tarter was nominated to be an All-American under the leadership of Coach Ezell. Tarter became the 23rd Buccaneer to join the 1,000 point club. During the Ezell guided the Bucs to their third straight winning season including a perfect 6-0 record at home against non-conference opponents. Ezell and the ETSU women's basketball program captured a signature victory early in the season when the Bucs defeated Old Dominion on the road. ODU is the third winningest program in NCAA Division I women's basketball history. In , Ezell directed Belmont to an campaign and the Bruins' first postseason appearance since a berth in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). Belmont took on a rigorous non-conference schedule and earned victory at Big Ten fixture Indiana. Belmont went 11-5 in OVC play, tying for second place in the OVC East and earning the conference tournament's No. 3 seed. In , Ezell directed the Bruins to 11 conference victories and a league tournament No. 3 seed in the program's final Atlantic Sun Conference campaign. Senior Haley Nelson ranked among the NCAA leaders in double-doubles, field goal percentage, blocked shots and rebounds en route to First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors. Ezell took the helm of the Belmont program after spending the previous two seasons as head coach at the University of Montevallo. Inheriting a Falcon program that recorded one winning season in its previous 12 years, Ezell directed Montevallo to a record in The Falcons also ranked second in the Peach Belt Conference in scoring defense. Prior to Montevallo, Ezell spent three seasons as head coach at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College (now Northwest Florida State College) in Niceville, Fla. The Lady Raiders went under Ezell's watch, which included an appearance in the 2006 NJCAA Regional Tournament. During her tenure, Ezell developed 14 All-Panhandle Conference performers, 12 of whom would go on to sign national letters of intent with NCAA Division I schools. The Lady Raiders also had 12 Academic All-Conference honorees. Ezell's coaching career began at the University of Alabama, where she spent five years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She was credited with delivering back-to-back Top 15 ranked recruiting classes for the Tide, with four guards developing into All-SEC players. Ezell was a four-year starting point guard for the Tide, helping lead the team to a record and four consecutive NCAA Division I "Sweet Sixteen" appearances from She ranks in the Top 20 in career scoring, with 1,022 points and is second all-time in career assists (620) and games started (114). She was a Second Team All-SEC selection in 1998 and was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team in In 1998, Ezell was a candidate for the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award, given to the top point guard in the country and was named to the inaugural WBCA/Honda All-Star Game for the nation's top 20 players.
