2 Rich Ryerson HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON UNLV 87 Former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson was named the fifth head men s soccer coach in UNLV program history on April 7, He took over the helm of the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach under former Rebel coach Mario Sanchez. It s a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater, said Ryerson. UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it s been the foundation for everything I ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer. In his first year as the Rebels head coach, Ryerson took a team that had 11 newcomers and coached it to a mark. Seven of the 11 losses were by one goal, and UNLV pulled off several impressive victories, including a win at Stanford and both a win and tie against MPSF Mountain champion Denver. the Rebels posted a program-best mark and No. 4 final national ranking. A two-time all-region and allconference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor s of science degree in business administration. 6 The number one priority for most new head coaches usually the same, to win more games than the year before. But for second-year Rebel head coach Rich Ryerson, it can be forgiven that wins and losses were probably second on his list. And what was at the top of the list in 2010? Saving the men s soccer program at UNLV. And saving it is exactly what Ryerson did. With the threat of seeing the program dropped due to unprecedented budget cuts in the state, Ryerson was key in helping bring in a record donation to the team, $850,000 from the Englestad Foundation. That donation, which was finalized in the spring of 2011, gave the Rebels a strong base for the next five years. Ryerson s second goal was also to save his roster. Following the departure of Mario Sanchez as coach in 2010, UNLV lost a total of 13 of 22 players from the roster between a combination of graduation, transfers, and incoming recruits that chose to sign elsewhere before Ryerson was named head coach in April of But Ryerson was able to keep several key players on the team, most notably his top two scorers. That would pay off as UNLV posted six wins, including highlight victories over Stanford and Denver, an eventual NCAA at-large selection. With the solid footing the Rebels now find themselves under, Ryerson has been able to add another group of impressive freshmen to last year s class. One year after struggling to put a product together on the field, Ryerson is now in place to field a team capable of challenging for a top-half conference finish. Overall, I was disappointed last year in our record with only six wins, but at the same time, I felt we were in every single game except perhaps for two. And there were several positives, the wins over Denver and Stanford, and we had three losses to New Mexico by one goal each, two in overtime. Ryerson was also happy with the core group in 2010, Stephen Sifuentes, Nick Marshall, Jonny Espinoza and Mike Mota. These four players really helped us bring the whole team together after the departures, they helped us transition into a new year that included 11 newcomers, and to play together as a team on the field. They really made a strong statement with their actions on and off the field. All four of those players earned all-conference honors during While Sifuentes is gone, graduated after scoring a team-high 15 points last year, the other three all return to once again pace the Rebels on the field. Marshall, Espinoza, Mota, they all had the chance to leave for somewhere else but they choose to stay and honor their commitment to UNLV, and from what they gained in maturity and leadership and dealing with a hard situation, that will pay off over the next few years. I expect a very bright future for them. It s not just the aforementioned trio that has Ryerson optimistic about the 2011 season, but his overall increased depth on the team. We have depth in the midfield this year, we have depth on the backline - that s something I couldn t call upon last year, said Ryerson. The experience on the backline will also allow Ryerson to switch up the team s formation this year to a 4-4-2, after playing three on the line in FORWARDS With increased goal scoring a priority in 2011, the forwards will be looked at to answer the challenge. And the Rebels know they have one player that will step up to the call, first team All-MPSF junior Nick Marshall, who is one of the biggest keys to the team this year. Marshall brings a lot of personality on and off the field, the kind of personality a team needs to have success, especially on offense with his confidence in his ability. He has great explosiveness over a short distance, allowing him to get open for goals, said Ryerson. Marshall posted 19 points as a freshman and followed that with 12 points in 2011, off five goals and two assists. Two players looking to challenge for starting roles up top are sophomore Joaquin Rivas and freshman Salvador Bernal, both Las Vegas natives. Rivas recorded five points in 2010, including a golden goal, while Bernal was one of the surprises of the preseason. Rivas has a powerful left foot and is already a threat to score for us when he s on the field, while Bernal is one of the quickest players on the team, while also possessing a good finishing touch, said Ryerson. Also returning is junior Robert Garcia (15 starts and four points in 2010), a quick and creative player on the attack, and sophomore Rory Emslie, who gives UNLV a a physical presence on the field at the position. Another newcomer is Israel Lopez, the first-ever northern Nevada (Carson City) native in the UNLV men s soccer program. ABREGO MIDFIELDERS This is a group that developed very nicely over the past year, with returning starters and juniors Espinoza, Zach Kupfer and sophomore Jose Mendoza coming back after a year of playing together in the midfield. These three players saw extensive playing time last year, we relied on their ability to control the game on the field and expect to see them take more control of the flow this season, said Ryerson. Espinoza, a second-team All-MPSF pick in 2010 after scoring four goals and posting 10 points, is the playmaker of the group. Once he started to understand the importance of his role on the field, he really took over and became a key player for us on the field last season, said Ryerson. Zupfer meanwhile played more of a defensive role last season, but will be returning to an attacking position in That s a spot he s had success in before for the Rebels, as he scored 13 points as a freshman off five goals and three assists, showing why he s considered one of the best finishers on the team. The third returnee, Mendoza, was the only freshman to start in all 19 games last year, and will be looked at as the Rebels holding midfielder this season after scoring one goal a season ago. The other returnee is sophomore Shane Panther, who saw limited time in seven games in The Rebels added one newcomer to the group, Julian Portugal of UNLV MEN S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

7 Las Vegas, a very technically gifted athlete with good vision on the field, and is a player Ryerson expects to challenge for significant playing time. DEFENDERS This is the group Ryerson is most excited about. This is easily the strongest backline we ve had in the four years I ve been involved on the coaching staff. It s a collection of eight players that have great size and the ability to make plays in the air, and it s really the first group of players who all bring a true defensive mentality to their game. Leading the way is Mota, a junior and one of the tallest players on the team at 6-2. Mota is becoming a true leader for us on the field, and he always gives us a scoring threat with his height for headers. He also possesses a good kick, and can strike the ball up to 60 yards. Senior Richard Abrego is expected to see time on the line this season after playing up front his first three years. Abrego works as hard as anyone during our training, and brings that effort onto the field every single game. The Las Vegas native was fourth on the team in scoring last year with seven points (two goals, three assists). One player that redshirted in 2010 but has played his way into contention for a starting role after a strong spring and summer is freshman Kyle Mellies. He really developed over the summer into a strong defender, and has shown the ability to close down on opponents, said Ryerson. Sophomore Scott Brandon played in 14 games last year and is looking to challenge for the left back spot, while the other Rebel to see action in a game last year was sophomore Ryan Robertson, who was limited in 2010 by injuries. The Rebels have high hopes for an improved overall team defense in 2011, led by returning goalkeepers Ryan Howard (above) and Simon Cook. Joining those five are a group of three freshmen, all of whom are expected to make an impact this season. Two are Las Vegas natives (Ricky Acero and Corey Ackley), while the third player is Connor Coletti from Sandy, Utah. GOALKEEPERS Three goalies are on the roster this season, including two returnees from 2010, senior Simon Cook and sophomore Ryan Harding, and either one could get the nod as the starter this season. Both goalies have their own different positives, as Cook brings maturity and leadership on the field, while Howard is a more athletic goalkeeper. The two combined to post a 1.47 team GAA and three total shutouts. Joining that pair is freshman Aaron Stoddard from Sandy, Utah. SCHEDULE UNLV begins the season on the road at Cal Poly on Aug. 27. That s the first of five non-conference road games, while only two are at home this season - San Francisco and Green Bay in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The MPSF season will start up on Oct. 1 with a home contest against New Mexico, while this year s league tournament will be held in Denver on Nov It s a tough schedule, especially playing so many Big West schools, that s a conference that typically has several nationally and regionally ranked squads, said Ryerson. But it will challenge our team, and then we get into conference play, where our goal is the same as last year - to exceed expectations, to finish higher than 2010 s sixth-place record. 19

22 It was a season of change for the Rebels in 2010, as they had to make a switch at the top after four-year head coach Mario Sanchez left in January and several key players either graduated or transferred out before the next coach was named. By naming the Rebels replacement, the school had to look no further then its own past, as former UNLV standout Rich Ryerson was named as the fifth coach in the program s history in April of Ryerson had spend the past three seasons as an assistant, and was ready for the challenge of taking over at the helm of his alma mater. Perhaps the biggest challenge was finding a starting 11 after seeing seven players transfer in the offseason before Ryerson was put in place, while the Rebels would also have to work with a new goalkeeper between the pipes. One thing working in UNLV s favor though was the return of its top two scorers from the year before, forwards Nick Marshall and Stephen Sifuentes. And as expected, the duo were the biggest factors on the team in 2010, both offensively and in leadership as well. They turned in first team all-conference seasons while leading the Rebels to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament for the second straight year. Though the season started with a tough home loss to Valparaiso by a 1-0 score on Sept. 4, the Rebels quickly bounced back with an 8-1 rout of Alabama A&M on Sept. 6 in the second game of the UNLV Invitational, giving Ryerson his first career victory. UNLV followed up that win with one of its best games of the season, as it went on the road to Pac-10 member Stanford and pulled off a 2-1 overtime upset over the Cardinal on Sept. 10, thanks to a golden goal from freshman Joaquin Rivas. The weekend ended with a loss at 18th-ranked California, but still left the Rebels with a 2-2 mark through the first two weekends. Next up was another two games away from Las Vegas, this time in the Green Bay Soccer Classic, and the Rebels would suffer a pair of tough 2-1 losses, at the hands of Green Bay and Robert Morris. Hoping to break the three-game losing streak, the squad returned home to host the UNLV Rebel Classic. The first SIFUENTES matchup was also the first Ryerson Cup matchup, a contest b e t w e e n coaching brothers between UNLV MEN S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

23 MARSHALL but pulled off a 1-0 upset win at Denver on Oct. 17, thanks to sophomore defender Mike Mota s first career score. That win gave UNLV seven points in MPSF play, putting them in good shape towards a berth in the conference tournament before taking on the other half of the league. UNLV looked to build on the momemtum of the Denver victory with a pair of home games, but that was quickly squashed with two tough losses, 2-1 to Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 22 and a 2-0 setback to Seattle on Oct. 24. As only the top six teams in the league advance to the MPSF tournament, things were not looking good for the Rebels with only three games left to play. With their backs to the wall though, the Rebels turned in their biggest weekend of the season. It began with a huge 2-1 overtime victory at San Jose State. Sifuentes scored early in the game, while Nick Marshall posted a golden goal score, the second of his career, to lift UNLV to the win on Oct. 29, earning three points. The Rebels then picked up another point two days later, as on Halloween they went to Sacramento State and pulled out a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the Hornets. Though the regular season ended with a 3-2 loss at New Mexico, UNLV had wrapped up the sixth seed in the 2010 MPSF Tournament, and would open up play against third-seed New Mexico. In a tight contest, the Lobos would come out on top, claiming a one-goal victory for UNLV for the third time in Despite the first round loss, the Rebels finished the season with several positives from the 2010 campaign, which saw a total of four players earn All-MPSF honors. In addition to Marshall and Sifuentes on the first team, Espinoza was a second team selection, and Mota was named honorable mention. Sifuentes, who finished the season as the team s leading scorer with team-highs in goals (six) and points (15) also earned all-region honors as well, Third Team All-Far West by NSCAA. Marshall was next on the squad with five goals and two assists for 12 points, while Espinoza also reached double-figures in points with 10 off four goals and two assists. In goal for the Rebels were junior Simon Cook and Ryan Harding, and the two combined to post three total shutouts (including two over Denver, a 2010 NCAA participant) and a 1.47 GAA. UNLV s Ryerson and Robbie Ryerson, UNLV Hall of Famer and coach of Mount St. Mary s. The Rebels made sure their Ryerson came out on top with a 4-1 victory on Sept. 24. Junior Ricky Abrego was impressive in the victory, posting the game-winner as well as two assists. The second game of the tournament was against No. 18 UC Irvine, and UNLV dropped the contest 4-0 on Sept. 26. Conference play for the Rebels began on Oct. 1, and for the third time in nine games they dropped a 2-1 contest, this time in overtime at New Mexico. UNLV would return home with two big performances against the other two Mountain division members, taking down Air Force 1-0 on Oct. 8 off a score from sophomore Jonny Espinoza and earning a double-overtime 0-0 tie with Denver on Oct. 10. 26 The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women s water polo, women s gymnastics, women s lacrosse and men s and women s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 20th season in and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today s tumultuous economic times. In , the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men s and women s swimming for the first time, while serving approximately 1,800 studentathletes on 98 teams from 39 universities in 13 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men s soccer, men s and women s water polo, men s and women s indoor track and field, men s and women s gymnastics, men s and women s swimming, women s lacrosse and men s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men s soccer, AL BEAIRD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MOUNTAIN PACIFIC SPORTS FEDERATION PO Box 850 Woodland, CA office fax abeaird@mpsports.org DARREN PRESTON MEDIA RELATIONS COORDINATOR dpreston@mpsports.org Al Beaird has been the Federation s only executive director, taking the reins in December Beaird presided over the transition of the Federation from what was initially a scheduling alliance to what is now nationally recognized as the most successful NCAA Division I Olympic sports conference.
