1 Game Notes Eastern Kentucky university men's basketball Game 2 QUICK NOTES EKU opened the Dan McHale Era with a resounding win over Coppin State on Friday at McBrayer Arena. Friday s win was the first time Eastern had scored more than 100 points against a Division-I opponent since a win over Alabama A&M on December 30, Senior Jarelle Reischel - a transfer from Rhode Island - paced five Colonels in double figures with 21 points in Friday s win. It was the first time five Colonels had scored in double figures in a single game since the OVC semifinal win over Murray State on March 7, Four of the Colonels top five scorers on Friday were newcomers. Redshirt junior JaVontae Hawkins (a transfer from South Florida) scored 19, sophomore Greg King (a transfer from Chipola College) scored 11 and freshman Nick Mayo scored 10. Senior Ja Mill Powell was the only returner to score in double figures. He scored 18 points and also grabbed a career-high five boards. Monday s game promises to pit two high-octane offenses against each other. UNCW also entered triple digits in its seasonopening win against Milligan College. EKU leads the all-time series with UNCW, 3-1; however, the two progams have not met since the season. The Colonels lost 72 percent of its scoring and 67 percent of its rebounding from last year s 21-win team. The team tied for fourth with 21 wins. 20 WINS FOR 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR With its victory over Norfolk State (March 17) in the CIT, the Colonels recorded their third straight 20-win season and the 10th in program history. In 2013 Eastern beat Gardner-Webb in the CIT for the first win in a national postseason tournament since 1945 (68 years). After beating Norfolk State and High Point, EKU has three postseason wins in three years. TOP-3 FOR THREE Eastern Kentucky has finished in the top-3 in the OVC for three straight years. Two of those years, and , the Colonels finished with the second best record in the league. TWO ON 1ST TEAM ALL-OVC Corey Walden and Eric Stutz were chosen First Team All-OVC. It is the first time since 1994 that two Colonels earned first team honors in the same season. 1ST IN TURNOVER MARGIN EKU led the country in turnover margin (+7.2). HIGH RANKINGS YEAR-AER-YEAR Eastern Kentucky has ranked in the top-5 in the nation in turnover margin the last three years (2013-4th, nd, st) and in the top-10 in the nation in steals the last two years (2014-6th, nd). RAISING THE DEFENSIVE INTENSITY Eastern held 10 of its last 13, opponents below 70 points. Five of those 10 were held under 60 points. For the season, EKU held 23 of its 33 opponents to fewer than 70 points. ALL-OVC POINT GUARDS With Corey Walden earning first team All-OVC honors, each of EKU s three recent starting point guards have earned first team All-OVC recognition. Mike DiNunno (2013) and Glenn Cosey (2014) got the streak started. WINNINGEST 4-YEAR STRETCH With its win at Tennessee State (Feb. 14), EKU set a new program record for the winningest four-year stretch. Eastern won 86 games over the last four years. The previous record was 80 from WINNINGEST 3-YEAR STRETCH With their win over Austin Peay (Feb. 23), the Colonels set a new program record for most wins over a three-year period. EKU had 70 wins since The previous record was 65 from ND WINNINGEST OVC TEAM LAST 10 YEARS With 188 victories, EKU is the second winningest program in the Ohio Valley Conference over the last 10 seasons (among members during that entire time). PROTECTING THE BALL Over the last two seasons, a total of 67 games, EKU has committed more turnovers than its opponent only four times. COLONELS IN SCHOOL RANKINGS Corey Walden set new school records for career steals (236) and steals in a season (99). He also posted the fourth-best career free throw percentage (84 percent) and 10th most career assists (288). Eric Stutz set a new school record for games played (133) and finished with the third-best career field goal percentage (60.8 percent) in program history. 30 OR FEWER IN A HALF In EKU s 66 halves of basketball this season, the Colonels held their opponents to 30 or fewer points 26 times. Which means, 39 percent of the time this season, an Eastern opponent hasn t scored more than 30 points in a half. TURNING TURNOVERS INTO POINTS EKU committed 238 fewer turnovers and outscored its opponents by 325 points off turnovers ( ) during the season. In , the Colonels committed 215 fewer turnovers and out-scored their opponents by 287 points off turnovers ( ). In EKU s five conference losses, opponents scored 75.4 points per game and made 50 percent of their shots from the field. Offensively, Eastern Kentucky put up roughly the same numbers win or lose. The Colonels shot 49 percent and averaged 71 points in their wins compared to 45 percent shooting and 70 points in their losses. SUMMER TRIP TO AUSTRALIA The Colonels took a 4-game summer trip to Australia in August. EKU won one game. Nine Colonels saw action during the trip. Corey Walden averaged 18.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Timmy Knipp scored 16 points per game. Jaylen Babb-Harrison averaged 14 points and 5.3 rebounds. For a full recap see page 12. TOP-5 OPPONENT After taking on No. 1 Kentucky (Dec. 7), EKU has faced a top-10 team in three straight seasons (No. 10 Illinois in , No. 4 Wisconsin in ). It was Eastern s third game against a top-5 opponent since 2007, when the Colonels faced No. 4 North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament on March 15. FOR 3, FOR 3, FOR 3, FOR 3, FOR 3... EKU attempted a season-high 39 three-point attempts against UT Martin (March 25) in the quarterfinals of the CIT. It was the most three-point attempts since launching 39 treys against Warren Wilson on Nov. 13, 2013 and 42 at Tennessee State on March 2, ST TO SCORE 35 SINCE... Corey Walden scored 35 points in Eastern s win over Tennessee Tech (Feb. 28). He is the first Colonel to score 35 or more points in a game since Shawn Fields scored 36 at Morehead State on Feb. 15, ALLOW ME TO ASSIST YOU Eastern had 20 assists on 25 made baskets against Austin Peay (Feb. 23). Paul Jackson s father -- Bishop Wiley Jackson -- is the founder and pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Cathedral in Atlanta. JaVontae Hawkins has five siblings. Tommy Matthews had a job working for the United Way during the summer of Isaac McGlone once went on a mission trip to Louisiana to assist in hurricane relief efforts. A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING IS BECOMING A THEME Isaac McGlone is showing a tendency to do whatever his team needs to win. Against Austin Peay (Feb. 23), McGlone had six points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds. ISAAC STEPS UP In the absence of senior point guard Corey Walden at Belmont (Feb. 19), Isaac McGlone scored a career-best 14 points and tied his career-high with five steals. He made 6-of-12 from the field, both also new career highs, and turned the ball over only once in 35 minutes of action. A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING Isaac McGlone hit 3-of-5 from three-point range and finished with nine points at Morehead State (Jan. 31). He also had five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. DOING WHAT HE CAN Isaac McGlone missed the team s shoot around the day of the Murray State (Jan. 29) game due to an illness and wasn t expected to play. However, in 29 minutes of action he dished out six assists and had five rebounds. He had never played more than 28 minutes in a game during his first season as a Colonel. Dan brings years of experience at some top-flight programs to EKU, along with ties to Kentucky and this region. He came to us with the highest recommendations from some of America s best coaches and we have every confidence he will take our basketball program to the next level. Before being chosen as Eastern Kentucky s 20th head men s basketball coach, McHale completed his second season as an assistant coach at the University of nesota where he worked under head coach Richard Pitino. McHale got his coaching start under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino as a staff assistant at Louisville from 2001 to I m extremely excited to be working at Eastern Kentucky University, McHale said. I want to thank President Benson and Steve Lochmueller for this opportunity. With the leadership of these two, it s an honor to be a part of these exciting times at EKU. We are going to bring excitement to McBrayer Arena with a fast paced style of play. It s going to be fun for our players and our fans. In his first season at nesota, McHale helped the Gophers to a NIT Championship and a record that included wins over No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 11 Ohio State. The 25 victories are the second-most in program history. The squad won 18 games, including a victory at Michigan State, a team that would reach the Final Four. I am extremely excited and proud of Dan McHale, Richard Pitino said. Eastern Kentucky is getting a tremendous coach and recruiter, but more importantly a great person. He will represent the Eastern Kentucky program in a first-class manner. There is no doubt in my mind that he will do great things there. McHale served as a student manager for four seasons ( ) at Kentucky. He was part of one national championship team, four NCAA Tournament teams and three Southeastern Conference championships while working with Tubby Smith s Wildcats. The Cardinals went 25-7, won the 2003 Conference USA Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament in McHale s second season as a staff assistant at Louisville. During his first stint he assisted with opponent scouting, game preparation and on-campus recruiting. After one year as the director of operations at Manhattan College, McHale returned to UofL for two seasons as the director of video operations, overseeing advance scouting video and evaluation video of Cardinal players. In his second two-year stint at Louisville, the Cardinals won 45 games and played in two NCAA Tournaments. Dan is one of the hardest working coaches in our profession, Rick Pitino said. I have great admiration for his dedication to our game. He is a great addition to our state. In 2007, McHale joined Kevin Willard s first staff at Iona College. As an assistant, McHale helped lead the Gaels from two wins the season before the duo arrived to 12 wins their first season and 21 wins in year three at Iona. He recruited NBA draft pick and 2012 MAAC Player of the Year Scott Machado to Iona. McHale followed Willard to Seton Hall when he was named head coach in In their second season, the Pirates won 20 games. While at Seton Hall, McHale was responsible for the Pirates defensive game planning and spearheaded opponent scouting and game preparation. Eastern Kentucky has hit a home run with the hiring of Dan McHale, who is a rising star within the coaching ranks, Willard said. He is not only a terrific recruiter and mentor of student-athletes, but he also has a great mind for the game of basketball. Dan has earned the opportunity to lead a basketball program, and with his outstanding knowledge, personality and work ethic, he will make a positive impact at Eastern Kentucky. McHale will look to add to the success of the Rick Pitino coaching tree that includes Billy Donovan (Florida), Tubby Smith (Texas Tech), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Richard Pitino (nesota) and former EKU head coach Travis Ford (Oklahoma State). McHale has caught the eye of one of America s top young college basketball coaches Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. Dan is going to do an outstanding job at Eastern Kentucky University, said Pastner. He is a tireless worker and will do the job with great principle and great work ethic. Eastern Kentucky got a winner in Dan McHale.
