4 PERSONAL - Married to Bruce Tappmeyer - No children EDUCATION - SUNY-Cortland BS, Health and Physical Education, Lamar Masters, Physical Education, 1983 CAREER RECORD As a head coach COACHING HONORS MIAA Coach of the Year COACHING EXPERIENCE North Florida Head Coach * * Total Missouri-Rolla Head Coach Total (7 years) Lamar University Assistant Coach TOTAL (21 years) A n outsider to the University of North Florida women's basketball program could say that Mary Tappmeyer is entering her sophomore year of coaching. That is only part of the story. It is true that Tappmeyer is leading her team into only its second year of competition at the Division I level that is. After 13 successful years of guiding UNF through the NCAA Division II ranks including two consecutive years of participation in the NCAA tournament, an NCAA South Atlantic Regional title, a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 and threestraight 20-win seasons Tappmeyer had to chart a new course for women's basketball at the University of North Florida. She was tasked with steering her squad through the four-year transition to the Division I ranks, beginning with the season. In the fall of 2004, when UNF announced its decision to join the elite of collegiate athletics, Tappmeyer rolled up her sleeves and went to work. Of course, Tappmeyer is no stranger to either hard work or taking challenging head coaching jobs. In 1981, at the youthful age of 25, she took her first head coaching job at the University of Missouri-Rolla. UMR had been a struggling Division II program in the years before Tappmeyer took over the reins. In only her third year with the program, she took a team that had previously won only six games the year before and won a record 19 games during the season, earning herself conference coach of the year honors for that feat. She finished her career at UMR as its all-time winningest coach, posting a overall record in seven years. In the fall of 1991, "itching" to take on a new challenge, Tappmeyer accepted the job as the head coach at UNF, a young, up-and-coming state university that was to begin competitive women's basketball in the fall of Tasked with creating a team from scratch, Tappmeyer set out in August of 1991 to handpick her first-year squad. One quickly finds out when discussing basketball with Tappmeyer that she bases a large part of her coaching philosophy around freshmen who will be in her program for four years. Freshmen is exactly what the inaugural squad was comprised of nine of them to be exact. After suffering through an inaugural season with her "baby Ospreys," UNF proceeded to rattle off three-consecutive winning seasons during the first four years of the program. Other highlights at the Division II level for Tappmeyer were three-consecutive 20-win seasons from , coaching an All-America in forward Skye Barber, leading her team to a No. 2 national ranking during the season and earning a berth in the NCAA Elite 8 in During the year, the inaugural season of Division I competition, Tappmeyer led her team into new and uncharted territory. During the first nine games of the season, eight of which were away from the friendly confines of UNF Arena, the Lady Ospreys faced foes such as Rutgers (ranked No. 3 in the nation), Iowa State, Indiana and South Florida. Those formidable opponents prepared UNF for its upcoming conference season, in which it performed admirably. Tappmeyer coached a squad that finished 9-11 in conference play and knocked off conference champion Belmont near the end of the year. In addition to her basketball successes, and they are many, Tappmeyer prides herself on the academic philosophy that is an integral part of the mission of the UNF Athletics Department. While at UNF, Tappmeyer's players have graduated at a 98 percent rate. A highlight of the inaugural year of competition at the Division I level was placing 12 members of the women's basketball team on the A-Sun All Academic List. Tappmeyer's players have been successful both on the court and in the classroom, where she has coached two All-America performers (Jennifer Cordes and Skye Barber), one Rhodes Scholar state finalist (Nancy Miller), an NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipient (Miller), 55 academic all-conference performers and nine all-conference honorees. Barber became the program's first conference player of the year and all-region selection in Tappmeyer played both college basketball and golf at SUNY-Cortland from During her career, Cortland advanced to the state tournament multiple times in basketball. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in health & physical education from Cortland in She later earned her master's degree, also in physical education, from Lamar, in She was inducted as a member of the Pittsford, N.Y., Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Missouri-Rolla Hall of Fame in Tappmeyer's home away from home is on the golf course, where she won the Missouri state golf amateur championship in She was also part of the Florida State Women's Golf Championship four-ball title squad three times. When not on the basketball court, on the road recruiting or on the links, Tappmeyer can be found spending time with her No. 1 fan, husband Bruce.

"I'm not completely disappointed," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "We met some of our expectations tonight and some of them we didn't meet. They are a physical team and rebounded well in the second half." The Lady Ospreys came out of the gates strong in both the first and second half, hanging with the Gators until runs midway through each half gave Florida an advantage UNF could not overcome. Tamara Hubbard helped spark UNF in each half, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Lady Ospreys a 3-0 advantage before starting the second half with her second 3-pointer of the contest. Hubbard led the Lady Ospreys with eight points, while Antoinette Reames pulled down a career high 11 rebounds. Three different freshmen tallied points for the Lady Ospreys, with Tiffany Williams and her five points leading the way. Turnovers proved to be the Lady Ospreys' downfall, as they tuned the ball over 30 times compared to 14 for UF. "As UNF gets more experienced the mistakes they made tonight won't be an issue," Florida head coach Carolyn Peck said. "As they continue to mature they will get better and better. They caused issued for us." Three separate Gators scored in double figures with Kim Dye's 13 points leading the way. She hit four 3- pointers on the night, as UF was 6-of-22 from long range. The youthful Lady Ospreys were firing just enough at the end, however, to pull out their first victory of the season. Fueled by strong defense and timely free-throw shooting down the stretch, the Lady Ospreys posted a win over NJIT to improve their season record to 1-1. Senior Tamara Hubbard led UNF with 12 points, while Jennifer Bowen added nine points and Sabrina Schmitt eight. Antoinette Reames also added five points and five blocks in the victory. UNF shot 42 percent for the game, but hit just 1 of 7 shots from 3-point range and only 13 of 23 free-throw attempts. The Lady Ospreys delivered in the clutch - getting a critical rebound and four straight free throws from Bowen in the final 11 seconds to seal the hard-fought win. "We're just telling our kids to win as many games as we can ugly in November and December," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "As a young team, we are going to have a lot of close games. We want to win the close, tough, ugly ones now in November and December and be fine-tuned by the time we get to January and February. It was a win, and we'll take as many of those as we can get." New Jersey Tech (0-2) shot 33 percent for the game, hit 4 of 13 shots from 3- point range (31 percent) and outrebounded UNF, 38-34, but could never grab a second-half lead. Kelly Crowe scored 15 points to lead the Raiders, while Katie Piekielski added 14. Both teams started slowly, managing only a 6-6 tie 11 minutes into the game. Schmitt and Hubbard each scored a pair of baskets over the next five minutes, however, to fuel a 12-3 UNF run and put the Lady Ospreys up with 2:44 to play before halftime. NJIT sliced into that margin just before the intermission, but the Lady Ospreys still led at the break. UNF (1-2) committed 28 turnovers and couldn't find its shooting touch in the second half in falling to tournament host Longwood. The Lady Ospreys outrebounded the Lancers and got a strong performance from sophomore center Antoinette Reames with nine points and a pair of blocks, but those efforts weren't enough to overcome critical turnovers that fueled the Lancers' attack. Longwood scored 25 points off of UNF's miscues. Despite those struggles, UNF rallied to cut a 10-point deficit to just four points with 19 seconds remaining, only to fall short. Ashleigh Hollman scored 15 points to lead Longwood (3-0), while Amber Sims added eight of her 12 points in the second half. UNF shot 43 percent for the game but hit just 38 percent over the final 20 minutes.
