No. 6 Maryland (13-3, 6-0) will return home to College Park to host Indiana (8-7, 4-2) Friday at 6 p.m. and Towson (2-12) Sunday at noon for the Pink Game and Senior Day. Friday s game will be the 900th game in Maryland field hockey history. Maryland owns a record of (.750) since its first year back in With a win Friday, the Terrapins can clinch at least a share of their second straight Big Ten title. Maryland won its 11th straight game Sunday with a 4-0 win at Rutgers. Fifth-year senior Welma Luus picked up her fist career hat trick in the win. Sophomore Carrie Hanks also scored and freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made three saves in the Terps third straight shutout. Luus was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the second time this year. Maryland is ranked No. 6 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll released Oct. 20. Twenty-seven of Maryland s 55 goals have come off of penalty corners this season. The Terrapins have allowed just six goals off of corners this year. Senior Anna Dessoye has 49 assists in her career and just five Terrapins in program history have reached the 50-assist mark. Last year, Maryland went on a 13-game win streak in the middle of the season. Along the way, the Terrapins won the school s first ever Big Ten title with the regular season crown. The Terrapins also led the nation in scoring with 92 goals scored for an average of 4.00 per game. In last year s NCAA Second Round, the Terrapins fell to Albany, 2-1. 2 Scouting Indiana Indiana is 8-7 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. Last weekend, the Hoosiers won at Ohio State, 3-0, and beat Penn State, 1-0. Maddie Latino leads the Hoosiers with nine goals this year. Maryland won the only meeting between the two schools last year. The Terrapins won 8-2 in Bloomington on Oct. 24. Anna Dessoye added two goals and an assist. Carrie Hanks, Sarah Sprink, Shari Jones, Emma Rissinger and Welma Luus also scored. This will be Indiana s first trip to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Scouting Towson Towson is 2-12 overall. Most recently, the Tigers lost at Hofstra, 9-0, and at La Salle, 3-0. Stacey Mackintosh and Morgan Skavdahl lead Towson with three goals each this season. Maryland leads the all-time series, , and has won 25 straight matchups since Most recently, the Terrapins beat the Tigers, 9-0 on Oct. 16, 2012 Oh Captain, My Captain Seniors Sarah Sprink and Kasey Tapman were voted co-captains for the 2015 season. This is Sprink s third straight season as captain for the Terrapins. She helped lead the Terps at both ends of the field last season as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and as the team s leading scorer. Tapman is a fifth-year senior that has worked to become one of the anchors of the Terrapins defense unit. Meharg on Sprink and Tapman - Sarah s daily commitment to hard, gritty work in a high performing training enviroment make her a logical choice as captain. She has developed to be the type of versatile leader that her teammates rely on. Kasey is the eptitomy of the word selfless both mentally and physically. On the field and off the field, she lives within the four Fs.Family, Friends, Faith, Field Hockey. She is unconditionally loyal and reliable. Both Sarah and Kasey are excellent role models for the new players. They set the tone for how we behave and what our goals are. 3 in the history of the sport in the NCAA with nine teams - Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland. The Terps are (.741) all-time against Big Ten opponents. Head coach Missy Meharg is (.856) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 27 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program. The Terrapins won the first Big Ten title for the University of Maryland with a 4-1 win over No. 14 Iowa on Nov. 1, 2014 in College Park. Three Named to Big Ten Players to Watch List Seniors Anna Dessoye, Sarah Sprink and freshman Linnea Gonzales were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list in August. Dessoye was named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List last year as well and made the All-Big Ten Second Team. She led the Terrapins with 19 assists last year and added 12 goals. Sprink earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honor last season and was also named to the All-Big Ten First Team. She led Maryland in scoring last year with 16 goals. Gonzales, a forward from Bel Air, Md., is a member of the U.S. Under-21 Team. Home Sweet Home Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage. The Terps are (.895) all-time at the Complex. The Terrapins are 28-1 (.966) vs. Big Ten teams at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. They have won 18 straight matchups at home vs. Big Ten teams, dating back to Penn State is the only Big Ten team to win at the Complex with a 1-0 victory on Nov. 11, Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-no. 1 Old Dominion. The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 24 of Maryland s NCAA Tournament games, and played host to three Final Fours (2007, 2010, 2014). The Terrapins are 22-2 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field. Pack the House The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance for the last five years - since In 2014, Maryland led the country in attendance with 8,707 fans coming out to see the Terrapins. On average, 670 fans came to each game. An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex. Overtime is Terp Time During Missy Meharg s tenure, the Terrapins have become one of the nation s most dangerous teams in overtime. The Terps are (.700) all-time in games that have gone to overtime or penalty strokes. In Meharg s tenure, the Terps are (.697) in overtime or penalty strokes games. Play the Best The Terrapins play one of the strongest schedules in the country. Ten of the Terps 19 regular season games are against teams in the NFHCA Preseason Top 20. The Terrapins will face off against six of the other 15 teams in the 2014 NCAA Tournament this season. Meharg Named Top Recruiter Terrapin head coach Missy Meharg was named one of college athletics top 20 recruiters by ESPNU in January Meharg was the only NCAA field hockey coach to make ESPNU s list. Meharg welcomes Teun Backer as the Terrapins volunteer assistant coach this year. Backer, who is from the Netherlands, has played hockey for various clubs in the Netherlands and in Spain for nearly 20 years and has spent many years coaching along the way. He worked with the Kapow Hockey Club in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., which is owned by Maryland alum and Olympian Lauren Powley. Sarah Sprink hails from Germany and has years of experience playing in the German national team system. Sprink played with the German Under-21 team in the Junior World Cup in Monchengladbach, Germany in the summer of Rachel Frusher is from Perth, Australia. She met former Terrapin Jemma Buckley playing in the Australian system, who told her about the Terps. Lein Holsboer and Floor Paanakker are both from the Netherlands. Paanaker comes to Maryland to do postgraduate work in criminology. Faye Curran comes to College Park from Cambridge, England, where she went to the University of Birmingham. Welma Luus came to Maryland to play tennis, but also has much experience in field hockey from growing up in South Africa. She played on the South African Under-18 team. Terrapins on U.S. National Teams Eight Terrapins, former and present, are currently on USA Field Hockey s national team rosters. Katie O Donnell competed for the U.S. Senior National Team in the London Olympics. She and Jill Witmer both competed for the USA in the Pan American Games this summer, where they won gold and earned their bid to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ali McEvoy is also a member of the U.S. Senior National Team. Sophomore Carrie Hanks and freshman Linnea Gonzales are on the U.S. Under-21 Team. Anna Dessoye, Alyssa Parker and Delaney Leathers are members of the U.S. National Team system, as alums of the U.S. Under-21 Team. 5 MissyMEHARG (.801), 28th Season Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 28th season at the helm of Maryland field hockey program, along the way building a program rich with a winning tradition. Voted National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times, Meharg has exemplified the tradition of excellence Maryland field hockey has become known for, a program with eight National Championships and 10 conference tournament championships - solidifying the Terrapins position among the top programs in the nation. Created 7 teaching tapes and DVDs for Championship Productions Over 85 Maryland players have earned spots on the ACC s Honor Roll and 56 Terrapins have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association s Academic Squad Welsh, Infante, Rowe, O Donnell & Frazer Win Honda Award In 2001, defensive back Autumn Welsh became the first athlete under Missy Meharg to be recognized as the national player of the year. Welsh was named the recipient of the prestigious Honda Award, marking the first time in Maryland field hockey history that a Terp attained the honor. After leading the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2005 and 2006, defensive midfielder Paula Infante earned the honor both years, becoming only the third field hockey player in the history of the award to win it multiple times. Infante went on to be a top-five finalist for the coveted Honda-Broderick Cup, presented to the NCAA s Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year across all sports. In 2008, Susie Rowe capped a senior campaign in which she won her third national title with the national player of the year award after setting Maryland records with 28 goals and 74 total points scored. The defender scored the game-winner in the National Championship game, a 4-2 victory over Wake Forest. As a junior, Katie O Donnell won the nation s top award after breaking the ACC assist records and leading the team offensively. Megan Frazer, team co-captain, won in 2011 after leading the Terrapins from an unseeded NCAA Tournament berth to another national title. 6 DinaRIZZO JoppedE VRIES Associate Head Coach 6th year Maryland 02 Assistant Coach 3rd year Amsterdam 00 After conducting a full candidate search, Maryland welcomed Dina Rizzo back to College Park in June 2010, after she served as an assistant at the University of Massachusetts during the 2009 season. Head coach Missy Meharg promoted her to associate head coach in January Prior to her time in Amherst, Mass., Rizzo spent the spring of 2009 working with the Crimson of Harvard. She got her start in coaching as a volunteer assistant with the Terrapins in Rizzo served on the U.S. Senior National team for seven years after her graduation from Maryland, making 133 appearances. She competed in all six of the U.S. s games in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played in the 2006 World Cup. Rizzo was also a member of the 2003 Pan American silver medalist team and played in two Olympic qualifiers and one World Cup qualifier. As a player at Maryland from , Rizzo was a member of the 1999 National Championship team. She was named a first team All-American, All-ACC and to the NCAA All-Tournament team in Rizzo earned her bachelor of arts in Communication in Maryland field hockey head coach Missy Meharg announced the hiring of Joppe de Vries (pronounced YO-pa de-vreez) as the program s assistant coach and technical director in July De Vries comes to College Park with over a decade of experience, including serving as goalkeeping coach for the South African national teams in preparation for the London Olympics. Joppe is technically an outstanding choice to join our coaching staff, Meharg said. He s had a variety of hands-on coaching experiences, both internationally at the Olympic level and the Dutch club system, which is the best club system in the world. We are really pleased with what he will bring to the University of Maryland. We welcome his wife and daughter as well and it will be a real honor to work with Joppe. De Vries has taught physical education and marketing communications at the University of Amsterdam for the past eight years. Over the last 12 years, he worked with various club teams in the Netherlands, including coaching the Rotterdam Hockey Club and former Terrapin Berber Rischen. Terrapin greats Paula Infante and Boukje Vermeullen also played with the Rotterdam Hockey Club. From 2010 through 2012, de Vries developed with the goalkeepers of South Africa s senior men s and women s national teams, as well as the Under-18 and Under-21 teams. De Vries earned his degree in 2000 from the University of Amsterdam in physical education with a specialization in sports marketing.
