TV: BTN Plus RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW Second-ranked Maryland (18-4) earned the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host the NCAA First and Second Rounds this weekend. The Terps will play No. 4 North Carolina (18-5) in the NCAA Second Round Sunday. This marks Maryland s 29th NCAA Tournament appearance and 22nd straight, which is the longest active streak in the nation. Maryland is (.740) in the NCAA Tournament. Missy Meharg is (.736) alltime in the NCAA Tournament, the highest winning percentage of any active coach. Maryland is ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll released Tuesday. The Terrapins have been ranked in the top 5 in 169 of 190 polls, dating back to The Terrapins beat UMass, 2-1, in in the NCAA First Round Saturday in a shootout. The Minutewomen took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Maryland pressured throughout regulation and Grace Balsdon tied the game off a penalty stroke in the final two minutes. After 30:00 of scoreless overtime, Brooke Adler, Lein Holsboer and Carrie Hanks buried their shots in the shootout and Sarah Holliday saved three straight shots by UMass. Both were named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Holsboer was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team for her first career honor. With Luus and Balsdon s honors this year, 15 Terrapins in program history have earned 20 conference Player of the Year awards. Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 29th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She s led them to a record of (.802), seven NCAA titles, 23 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times in her career. In last year s NCAA First Round, the Terrapins fell to Princeton, 3-1. 2 Scouting the Tar Heels No. 2 North Carolina is 18-5 overall this season. The Tar Heels beat No. 12 Stanford, 3-0, Saturday in the NCAA First Round. Lauren Moyer leads the Tar Heels with 21 goals this season. Maryland trails the all-time series with North Carolina, The Terps are 4-3 vs. the Tar Heels at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Tar Heels took their last meeting, 3-1 in College Park on Sept. 5, Maryland and North Carolina have met in the NCAA Tournament nine times, with the Terps owning a 5-4 edge. They met in three straight NCAA title games in 2009, 2010 and The Tar Heels won in 2009, while the Terrapins claimed the 2010 and 2011 NCAA titles. Oh Captain, My Captain Redshirt junior Brooke Adler, Junior Lein Holsboer and senior Welma Luus were voted to be the Terrapins tri-captains this year. This is the first time for each of them to serve as team captain. Terps in the B1G The Terrapins joined the Big Ten conference in 2014, after playing in the ACC for 31 years. Big Ten field hockey is the largest conference in the history of the sport in the NCAA with nine teams - Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland. The Terps are (.755) all-time against Big Ten opponents. Head coach Missy Meharg is (.859) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 29 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program. Since joining the league in 2014, the Terps are 22-4 in conference play. The Terrapins are 35-2 (.946) vs. Big Ten teams at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Penn State is the only Big Ten team to win at the Complex with a 1-0 victory on Nov. 11, 2007 and a 2-1 win on Nov. 6, The Terrapins won the first Big Ten title for the University of Maryland with a 4-1 win over No. 14 Iowa on Nov. 1, 2014 in College Park. Maryland defended its first Big Ten title when it clinched the 2015 regular season crown with a 1-0 overtime win vs. Indiana on Oct. 23. The Terrapins won their first Big Ten Tournament title with a 5-1 win over second-seeded and 10th-ranked Michigan on Nov. 8 in the final. 3 Overtime is Terp Time During Missy Meharg s tenure, the Terrapins have become one of the nation s most dangerous teams in overtime. The Terps are (.724) all-time in games that have gone to overtime or penalty strokes. In Meharg s tenure, the Terps are (.722) in overtime or penalty strokes games. Play the Best The Terrapins played one of the strongest schedules in the country. Ten of the Terps 18 regular season games were against teams in the NFHCA Preseason Top 20. They also played four of the five teams in the Preseason Top Five. The Terrapins faced off against seven of the other 16 teams in the 2015 NCAA Tournament this season. Staff Updates The Terrapins welcome two new assistant staff members in Stefanie Fee joins the staff as an assistant coach and Joann Engestrom joins as a volunteer assistant coach. Fee played at Duke from and helped the Blue Devils to a pair of NCAA Quarterfinals appearances as a four-year starter on defense. She earned NFHCA Second Team All-America honors in She is a member of the U.S. national team and competed in the Olympics in Rio this summer. Engestrom played at Temple, where she graduated in She earned Regional All-American, All- Atlantic 10, and All-America East Conference honors during her time with the Owls. In 2003, Engestrom played on the U-23 Junior National Team and the U.S. National Team, training for the 2004 Olympics. Engestrom helped to restructure the Washington Wolves Hockey Club in Global Terps The Maryland field hockey roster reflects four continents around the globe, including Africa, Europe and North America. Welma Luus came to Maryland to play tennis, but also has much experience in field hockey from growing up in South Africa. She played on the South African Under-18 team. Grace Balsdon comes to the U.S. after playing in Great Britain s national team system. She is a member of the National Team. Sophie Pelzer, Anouk van Asbeck and Lein Holsboer all hail from The Netherlands. Pelzer has played for the Dutch Under-16 and Under-18 national teams. Terrapins on U.S. National Teams Ten Terrapins, former and present, are currently on USA Field Hockey s national team rosters. Katie O Donnell Bam is a two-time Olympian. Bam and Jill Witmer competed with Team USA in the Rio Olympics this past summer. Bam led Team USA with five goals. Ali McEvoy is also a member of the U.S. Senior National Team. Junior Carrie Hanks and sophomore Linnea Gonzales are on the U.S. Under-21 Team. Lizzy Dessoye and Kelee Lepage are on the U.S. Under-19 Team. Recent Terp alums Anna Dessoye, Alyssa Parker and current senior Delaney Leathers are members of the U.S. National Team system, as alums of the U.S. Under-21 Team. Home Sweet Home Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage. The Terps are (.898) all-time at the Complex. Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-no. 1 Old Dominion. The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 25 of Maryland s NCAA Tournament games, and played host to three Final Fours (2007, 2010, 2014). The Terrapins are 23-2 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field. Pack the House The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance in five of the last six years. An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex. Meharg Named Top Recruiter Terrapin head coach Missy Meharg was named one of college athletics top 20 recruiters by ESPNU in January Meharg was the only NCAA field hockey coach to make ESPNU s list. Her stellar recruiting classes have won her seven NCAA titles overall (1993, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011) and 20 conference titles. Here are the top 10: 1. 5 MissyMEHARG (.802), 29th Season Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 29th season at the helm of Maryland field hockey program, along the way building a program rich with a winning tradition. Voted National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times, Meharg has exemplified the tradition of excellence Maryland field hockey has become known for, a program with eight National Championships and 11 conference tournament championships - solidifying the Terrapins position among the top programs in the nation. Created 7 teaching tapes and DVDs for Championship Productions Over 85 Maryland players have earned spots on the ACC s Honor Roll and 59 Terrapins have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association s Academic Squad Welsh, Infante, Rowe, O Donnell & Frazer Win Honda Award In 2001, defensive back Autumn Welsh became the first athlete under Missy Meharg to be recognized as the national player of the year. Welsh was named the recipient of the prestigious Honda Award, marking the first time in Maryland field hockey history that a Terp attained the honor. After leading the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2005 and 2006, defensive midfielder Paula Infante earned the honor both years, becoming only the third field hockey player in the history of the award to win it multiple times. Infante went on to be a top-five finalist for the coveted Honda-Broderick Cup, presented to the NCAA s Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year across all sports. In 2008, Susie Rowe capped a senior campaign in which she won her third national title with the national player of the year award after setting Maryland records with 28 goals and 74 total points scored. The defender scored the game-winner in the National Championship game, a 4-2 victory over Wake Forest. As a junior, Katie O Donnell won the nation s top award after breaking the ACC assist records and leading the team offensively. 6 JoppedE VRIES Associate Head Coach/Technical Director 4th year Maryland field hockey head coach Missy Meharg announced the hiring of Joppe de Vries (pronounced YO-pa de-vreez) as the program s assistant coach and technical director in July He was promoted to associate head coach in the summer of De Vries comes to College Park with over a decade of experience, including serving as goalkeeping coach for the South African national teams in preparation for the London Olympics. Joppe is technically an outstanding choice to join our coaching staff, Meharg said. He s had a variety of hands-on coaching experiences, both internationally at the Olympic level and the Dutch club system, which is the best club system in the world. We are really pleased with what he will bring to the University of Maryland. We welcome his wife and daughter as well and it will be a real honor to work with Joppe. StefanieFEE Assistant Coach 1st year Stefanie Fee was hired as an assistant coach in the summer of She is a member of the U.S. national team roster and oversees the Terrapins defense. Stefanie is one of the most competitive and intense defenders and counter attackers I have ever seen play the game, Meharg said. Every 1-on-1 battle is treated like a final buzzer play. She will lead our defense. Fee competed in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August with former Terrapins Katie O Donnell Bam and Jill Witmer. Fee has been on the U.S. Senior National Team since 2012, earning 90 caps. She helped Team USA win gold in the 2015 Pan American Games, the 2014 Champions Challenge and the 2013 World League Round 2 Tournament. Fee and Team USA won the bronze medal in the Champions Trophy this summer in London. De Vries has taught physical education and marketing communications at the University of Amsterdam for the past eight years. Over the last 12 years, he worked with various club teams in the Netherlands, including coaching the Rotterdam Hockey Club and former Terrapin Berber Rischen. Terrapin greats Paula Infante and Boukje Vermeullen also played with the Rotterdam Hockey Club. Fee was a four-year starter at Duke from She helped the Blue Devils to a pair of NCAA Quarterfinals appearances. She earned NFHCA Second Team All- America honors in 2011 and graduated with her bachelor s degree in psychology in From 2010 through 2012, de Vries developed with the goalkeepers of South Africa s senior men s and women s national teams, as well as the Under-18 and Under-21 teams. De Vries earned his degree in 2000 from the University of Amsterdam in physical education with a specialization in sports marketing. De Vries and his wife, Katrien Van Den Eijnde, have a young daughter, Saar, and a son, Tijn. JoannENGESTROM Volunteer Assistant Coach 1st year Joann Engestrom was brought on as the Terrapins volunteer assistant coach in the summer of She brings eclectic field hockey pedagogy to the Terps having experienced all levels of hockey. Engestrom is a local teacher and club coach in the Maryland area. She earned a bachelor s degree in kinesiology with a focus in physical education and health at Temple University in She earned Regional All-American, All-Atlantic 10, and All-America East Conference honors during her time with the Owls. Engestrom experienced the USA National pipeline, competing in our USA Field Hockey programs, such as Futures, Futures Elite, High Performance Summer League in her career. Joann brings a wealth of knowledge and influence across all levels to our program, Meharg said. We have been coaching colleagues for many years and Maryland is fortunate to have her. In 2003, Engestrom played on the U-23 Junior National Team and the U.S. National Team, training for the 2004 Olympics and earned a spot on the Japan and Spain tours. She gained coaching experience as the Temple University undergraduate assistant while completing her degree. She began her teaching career with Montgomery County Public Schools, where she continues to grow the game with today s youth. In 2012, she earned her masters of science in Educational Leadership, along with a Maryland Administrative Certification at Hood College.
