Friday night the Spartans host No. 25 Iowa in the final home match of the regular season. The match will also serve as Senior Day for the six Spartan seniors, and will be played at Ralph Young Field at 3 p.m. Team Notes: MSU is coached by Helen Knull. Knull is in her sixth season at the helm of the Spartan field hockey program. The Spartans claim an 8-8 overall record while sitting at 2-4 in the Big Ten. All of MSU s losses this season have come at the hands of nationally ranked opponents, the highest being Penn State at No. 4. MSU has faced at least one ranked opponent in every weekend of play with one exception: the weekend in Ohio (at Miami and Ohio State). The Spartans have competed in three overtime games this year, two of which have gone into double overtime and one of which took a shootout to decide a winner. MSU is undefeated in overtime games, posting an impressive 3-0 record. Through 16 games, the Green and White is averaging 1.94 goals per game while allowing 2.56 gpg. The Spartans claim a shots on goal percentage of.552. The Spartans are fourth in the Big Ten in total shots with 261. As a squad, MSU ranks 28th in the nation in defensive saves with four. The Spartans rank at an impressive 18th in the nation in saves per game with The Green and White is averaging 16.3 shots per game and has tallied 26 total assists. Player Notes: Redshirt senior midfielder Kendal Anderson leads the team with seven goals to go along with two assists, registering 16 points, second-best on the squad. The Shaker Heights, Ohio native ranks ninth in the conference in shots with 47, (2.94/game). Senior forward Sophie Macadré sits second on the team in total goals with six. The New Zealand native adds a team-high seven assists, leading the team in total points with 19. Macadré sits 10th in the Big Ten in assists (0.44/game). Redshirt senior back Simone Vagnoni has catapulted herself into being tied for second on the team in goals with six, after scoring a goal in each of the last three games. The captain has been dominant in the past three contests, tallying a single goal in each outing. Vagnoni adds two assists to her season total, registering 14 points (third on the team), and plays an integral part of the Spartan backline. Vagnoni was named as an alternate for the Victory Sports Tours/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Senior Game. Sophomore midfielder Makenzie Brown has three goals and is the only Spartan this season to score twice in one game. The Scotland native tallied two goals in a span of less than 20 seconds in the match against Yale on Sept. 17. Junior back Bailey Higgins has been an integral part of the Spartan backline, starting in every game this season. Higgins is second on the team in assists with five. Senior forward Grace Santi has two goals in 2017, fourth-best on the team. The senior also adds one assist, tallying five points. Freshman forward Lia Sinisi is the only freshman to start in all 16 games for the Green and White. Redshirt senior back Lauren Bonness, sophomore forward Kelsey Keener, freshman forward Meredith Ross, and sophomore back Hannah Ackers have each recorded one goal for the Green and White. Senior Katie Miller and freshman Mairi Fletcher have both seen time in net for the Spartans, combining for a save percentage of.735. Miller leads the team with 60 total saves and claims a save percentage of.706, seventh-best in the Big Ten. The senior captain has recorded over 780 minutes in net, ranks eighth in the Big Ten in saves and ninth in saves per game with Fletcher ranks sixth in the conference in saves per game with The freshman has a save percentage of.742 (sixth in the Big Ten). Last Time Out: MSU had two tough matches last weekend, first hosting No. 18 Rutgers before heading to Indiana. The Spartans fell to the Scarlet Knights on Friday night in a 3-2 battle. RU was able to take a 1-0 lead early in the game before MSU answered, evening the score at 1-all. Santi found the back of the net at 16:56 when she drew the goalkeeper out of the net and slid it past the right glove of the Rutgers defender. The Scarlet Knights claimed the next two goals, the first coming at 30:19 and the second at 34:56 to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Spartans made it a one-goal game in the 44th minute, when Simone Vagnoni netted one off the penalty corner from the top of the circle, making it 3-2. Madison O Neill was credited with the assist on the goal. On Sunday, the Spartans rebounded with a 3-2 victory at Indiana. At 14:28, Cara Bonshak controlled the ball, dribbling it past an IU defender and shot it into the circle to Kendal Anderson, who found a slicing Lauren Bonness, who cut into the left side of the goal and fired it past the goalkeeper, giving MSU a 1-0 lead. The Hoosiers tied the game at 1-all in the 49th minute after being awarded a penalty stroke. At 58:57, the Spartans scored their second goal of the day off a penalty corner. Simone Vagnoni found the back of the net from the left side of the circle, giving her team a 2-1 lead. Macadré and Madison O Neill were credited with the assists off the penalty corner goal. The third goal of the afternoon came from Bonshak. The freshman played the ball after it was deflected out of the upper left side of the circle. The Allentown, Pa. native played the ball back into the circle and fired it in low, giving MSU a two-goal lead with just under nine minutes to play. The Hoosiers earned a penalty corner as time expired and played
2 the corner when the clock hit zero. The Hoosiers scored on the penalty corner, making it a 3-2 final. Series History: The Spartans and the Iowa Hawkeyes have met 65 times throughout the duration of their series, and the Hawkeyes hold a series advantage of In the first game of the series, dating back to Oct. 21, 1977, the two teams tied in a 2-2 draw. The Spartans hold a 3-2 advantage over the last five meetings. The last time MSU defeated Iowa was on Oct. 17, 2014 in East Lansing by a final of 2-0. Scouting the Hawkeyes: The No. 25-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes hold a season record of 10-5 and are 1-5 in conference play. Lisa Cellucci is in her fourth season at the helm of the Hawkeye field hockey program. As a team, the Hawkeyes average 2.40 goals per game while also allowing Iowa boasts a.599 shots on goal percentage to go along with 10.8 shots per game. The team has registered 38 assists this season. In its last game, the Hawkeyes fell at home to No. 3 Michigan by a final of 3-2, its third-straight loss. Sophomore Katie Birch leads her team in goals with 13 while adding six assists, totaling 32 points. The midfielder owns a shots on goal percentage of.667 and has collected all of the Hawkeyes penalty strokes on the season, going 3-for-4. Birch is second in the Big Ten in four different categories, including shots (61), shots per game (4.07), goals (13), and goals per game (0.87). Freshman Maddy Murphy is second on the team in goals, totaling nine on the year. Senior Katie Jones has spent every minute in net for Iowa, totaling over 1,058 minutes. Spartan Snippets: Hannah Ackers sister, Chandler, played her collegiate field hockey career at Iowa. Junior back Amanda Robinson faced off against her sister, Rachel, in the match against Virginia. The game marked the first time the sisters met on their opposing teams. The Spartans currently have athletes on the roster from three foreign countries and eight states. Fletcher and Brown both come from Glasgow, Scotland; Miller from Country Kildare, Ireland; and Macadré from Wellington, New Zealand. The remainder of the roster is made up of athletes from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, Virginia, California, Ohio and Connecticut. The 2017 season marks the fifth consecutive year the Spartans have had twins on the team. The Abbott twins, Caitlin and Mary Claire, first wore the Green and White in The Cole twins, Meghan and Maggie, are now on the Spartan squad as sophomores. 4 The Helen Knull File Helen Knull concluded her sixth season as head coach of the Michigan State field hockey program in She was hired as head coach on Dec. 27, 2010 after serving as an assistant and associate head coach for five years. Her overall record on staff for the Spartans is and she holds a record as head coach. Helen is an enthusiastic and energetic individual, and we are thrilled that we could elevate her into the position of head coach, said MSU athletic director Mark Hollis of the hire. Helen has helped build and maintain what has become a winning tradition at Michigan State in our field hockey program. The program has seen unparalleled success over the last decade, and we are confident that making Helen Knull our head coach will continue that success into the future. The 2016 season saw the Spartans go 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. MSU faced a slew of tough opponents, facing nine ranked opponents in the 18-game schedule. Kendal Anderson and Simone Vagnoni had successful junior seasons, as both were named Second Team All-Big Ten and NFHCA All-West Second Team. 14 members of the 2016 squad were Academic All-Big Ten selections. MSU had its best season under Knull in Overcoming a slow start, the team finished 14-10, highlighted by a Big Ten Tournament Championship and Elite 8 appearance. The Spartans won seven of their final nine games, including NCAA Tournament victories over Miami (Ohio) and regional host and second-seeded Syracuse, snapping the Orange s 45-game win streak at home. Knull was named the NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year, becoming the third coach in program history to earn the honor. Three players were named to the NFHCA West All-Region Team and five players were named to All-Big Ten teams. Abby Barker was a Third Team All-American and First Team All-Big Ten selection. In addition to the on field success by the program in 2013, the Spartans excelled in the classroom as well. MSU was the recipient of the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award on top of having 13 student-athletes named to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, recognizing them for their individual effort in the classroom. Nine of Knull s players were also named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team. Kristen Henn became the third field hockey player in program history to be named the Big Ten s Medal of Honor winner, the conference s most exclusive award to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The 2012 season was highlighted by many achievements both on and off the field, as the Spartans went in Knull s second season as head coach. Abby Barker was named to the First Team All-Big Ten, while Kristen Henn and Becky Stiles were Second Team selections. Barker and Stiles were also named as 2012 Longstreth /National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I First Team All-West Region selections. Barker was then recognized nationally as a 2012 Longstreth /National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Prior to being named head coach, Knull served as an assistant coach on the Rolf van de Kerkhof s Spartan staff from , and was elevated to the title of Associate Head Coach in the spring of In the seasons in East Lansing before being named head coach, she helped the Spartans compile a overall record, including an mark in the last two seasons combined. In 2009, the Spartans won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles, becoming only the second school in Big Ten history to finish the regular season and tournament play unbeaten. The Green and White also advanced to the NCAA Tournament four straight times ( ). Knull arrived in East Lansing in 2006 from Kent State, where she served as an assistant coach for two years and as an associate head coach during her last season at her alma mater (2005). Knull was a four-year starter, two-year captain and a two-time All-American at Kent State, leading the Golden Flashes to the NCAA Tournament four straight years ( ). In 2002, Knull was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. She was inducted into the Kent State Athletics Hall of Fame in As a coach, Knull helped guide the Golden Flashes to two Mid- American Conference championships (2003, 2005), cultivating the development of two Freshmen of the Year and one MAC Player of the Year. In addition to her experience at Kent State, Knull has worked as a Regional Coaching Director for Region Nine of the United States Field Hockey Futures Program. As Regional Coaching Director, Knull oversees the training sites and coaching development in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania. While growing up in Scotland, Knull played on the National U-16 and U-18 teams before coming to the United States for college. Knull earned a degree in sport management with a minor in coaching from Kent State in 2003, completing a master s degree in sport management in Knull obtained a Level II coaching accreditation through USA Field Hockey in November Knull and her husband, Justin, have a daughter, Grace, and a son, Calum. The family resides in Laingsburh. Division I Second-Team All-American. Two of Knull s players were also selected to play at the USA Field Hockey 2013 Women s National Championship. During Knull s first season as head coach in 2011, the team tallied a season record of Off the field, Corey Block was presented the President s Award at the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala. The award is given to the male and female graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA. The team was recognized with the 2012 SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. The NFHCA also recognized nine athletes from the field hockey team to its National Academic Squad and senior Corey Block as a Scholar of Distinction. 13 members of the team were Academic All-Big Ten selections for the fall of On the field, three Spartans earned NFHCA All-Region honors, while two of them also picked up second team All-Big Ten accolades under Knull s first year as head coach. In the classroom, MSU earned the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award, while 11 Spartans received NFHCA Academic honors, 10 were Academic All-Big Ten and three were Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
