When the final whistle blew, Charlotte had recorded more shots (19-11), shots on goal (8-4) and corners (5-4) than Marshall to go with its three-goal win.

SENIOR SENDOFF Co-captains Zach Hunter (Marietta, Ga.) and Travis Brent (Virginia Beach, Va.) are set to be recognized prior to their final game for Marshall, along with Tyler Atwell (Hurst, Texas), Cody Partyka (Venetia, Pa.) and Anthony Virgara (Pittsburgh). The quintet has combined for 198 starts entering the contest and a total of 248 games played. On the offensive end, the group has scored a combined 15 goals and eight assists in their time in kelly green. THE GRAY AREA Marshall coach Bob Gray (Postgame Nov. 2) Our guys played hard, but it is just the same old story for us, we don t have anyone that can put the ball in the net. It is going to be our Senior Night on Friday and we are going to face a team that is currently ranked 10th in the country, so we are going to just go out and try to get that signature win we have been trying to get all year. We will have to give our best effort and play the role of spoiler, hopefully. 2

3 SCOUTING THE BLAZERS Having initially climbed the C-USA standings, UAB has struggled recently. The Blazers are in a two-match losing streak (to New Mexico and South Carolina). A 4-3 loss to the Gamecocks dropped UAB to fourth in C-USA with one contest remaining. The Blazers have bolstered a high-powered offensive attack, averaging 2.5 goals per game. Freddy Ruiz has been the leader of the UAB offensive attack, with 11 goals and added three assists for 25 points. UAB leads the series The Blazers have won three straight against Marshall, which has not topped UAB since RELOADING & REBUILDING The 2013 squad has 14 returning from 2012 and 14 newcomers to the program. Those who accounted for 14 of the 30 Marshall goals (53.3%) will be back for the Herd, along with those who accounted for 11 of 21 assists (52.4%) and 43 of 81 points (53.1%). HOME SWEET HOME As part of the Marshall University Vision Campaign for Athletics, Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex took two years and $8 million to construct for the Marshall men s and women s soccer programs. The complex opened on Aug. 23 with the men having downed a team of MU Alumni, 2-0, before a crowd of 1,433. A total of 85 men s soccer alumni attended the festivities, including former Marshall coaches. YOUNG BLOOD The 2013 squad is loaded with young talent as 20 of the 28 roster spots are filled by freshmen and sophomores. 15 of those slots are taken up by freshmen, 12 of which are true freshmen. The squad is the youngest Bob Gray has ever coached during his 19-year tenure at Marshall. HOME GROWN Not lacking on hometown talent, the Herd have six natives of the state of West Virginia, all of which are underclassmen heading into the season. (Ian Lovern, Logan Powell, Brady Reymond, Trevor Starcher, Felipe Thompson* and Tommy Trupo) INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR Just like in years past, the squad has a dose of international flavor as six members of the 2013 team are from outside of the United States. Countries include: Jamaica (Jahvon Allison), Canada Andrew Ferguson and Daniel Jodah), England (Curtis Gallagher), Chile and (Felipe Thompson*) New Zealand (Nick Edginton). * - Marshall freshman Felipe Thomson hails from Santiago, Chile, but spent his senior year of high school at Hurricane HS in Hurricane, W.Va. Thompson bridges two gaps as he spent most of his life outside of the United States, before relocating to West Virginia. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE The Herd will take on nine teams in 2013 that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the first of which took place at Akron (Aug. 20) in an exhibition. In 2012, six of those nine teams either finished or received votes in the final NCAA top 25, three in the top 10. One of the opponents, Maryland (Oct. 15), were national semifinalists. PRESEASON C-USA HONORS Five of the 10 first place votes went to squads that are entering year one in C-USA (New Mexico with four and Charlotte with one). Marshall failed to place anyone from its 2013 squad on the All-Conference USA team, making them one of the three programs to do so as they joined FIU and new C-USA member, Florida Atlantic. Marshall was picked to finish ninth by C-USA coaches in the ten-team conference as the Herd collected a total of 23 points the the poll. First place favorite Tulsa received 92 points, while tenth place pick Florida Atlantic collected 10 points in the poll. SENIOR LEADERS The 2013 Herd squad has four seniors on the roster, five fewer than the nine that were on the 2012 Marshall roster. Among those nine were 2012 Conference USA Co-Player of the Year Daniel Withrow and Tom Jackson, who ranks fifth all-time in goals among the Marshall record books with 26. A TOUGH FINISH TO 2012 With the construction of Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex, Marshall was forced to play all but one of its 2012 home matches away from Huntington. After having started the 2012 season , the Herd struggled down the stretch as they finished 1-4 in the last five matches of the season. A NEW AGE FOR C-USA 3

4 Conference USA will look different in 2013 with the addition of New Mexico, UNC Charlotte, Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic & the departure of Memphis, SMU and UCF. KEEPING AFLOAT The Thundering Herd will look to go for its fifth straight season without a losing record as the Herd failed to reach a record of.500 or above during the 2008 capaign. POSTSEASON DROUGHT After having made three consecutive postseason appearances in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the Herd have made the postseason on just one occassion in the past four seasons (2011). EXPERIENCE APLENTY Marshall head man Bob Gray enters his 19th season at Marshall and his 37th year as a head coach. Gray has amassed 422 career wins (167 at Marshall) and currently ranks third among active Division I men s soccer coaches in total wins; behind James Madison s Toma Martin (462) and South Carolina s Mark Berson (455.) With the 18 seasons from Gray, the Herd coaching staff has a combined 28 seasons of coaching experience with the Marshall program. The other experience comes from Thomas Olivier (four seasons - Assistant), Alex Fatovic (two seasons - Assistant), Chris Bohach (four seasons - Volunteer Assistant). Record When... 5 2013 Player Performances #2 - Tommy Trupo Got an assist in the exhibition against MU Alumni (Aug. 23) from his cross into the box that was headed in for a goal by Felipe Thompson. #3 - Mukor Harris Scored a goal in the 56th minute against Wright State (Sept. 6) on an assist from fellow freshman Daniel Jodah. #10 - Jahvon Allison Unofficially recorded his first goal of the season in an exhibition against a team of MU Alumni (Aug. 23) on a strike from 25 yards out... His first point of the season came in the form of an assist on a cross to Nick Edginton against NKU (Sept. 22)... Scored in the first half against South Carolina (Oct. 19) of a 1-1 draw. #12 - Felipe Thompson In the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex Grand Opening exhibiton game (Aug. 23), Thompson headed in a goal past the alumni goalie off of a cross from Tommy Trupo. #14 - Jack Hopkins Netted a goal on a free kick with Marshall trailing Wright State (Sept. 6) by one goal with 48.6 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime... Scored the lone Herd goal against Cleveland State (Sept. 6) on a cross from Juan Ortiz... Headed home a cross in the 88th minute against Bowling Green (Sept. 27) to help the Herd collect a 1-1 draw. #17 - Trevor Starcher Helped lift Marshall to its first win of the season with a goal in the 46th minute against IPFW in a 1-0 win. #20 - Zach Hunter Recorded the first goal of his senior season in the 67th minute against VMI (Sept. 17) when he drew a penalty kick and sank his penalty shot inside the left post... In the 34th minute against No. 25 New Mexico (Sept. 30), stepped to the penalty spot and scored from 12 yards out in a 3-1 Herd defeat... Struck a ball past the Tulsa goalie for his second goal of the year in a 1-1 draw. #21 - Ben Holt Recorded his first-career assist on a cross into the box to Trevor Starcher that was struck home in the 46th minute of a 1-0 win over IPFW (Sept. 15)... Scored his first-career goal in the 71st minute against VMI (Sept. 17) on a cross into the goalie box from Daniel Jodah... Collected an assist vs. Bowling Green (Sept. 27) on a cross to Jack Hopkins in the 88th minute. #22 - Daniel Jodah Saw his first collegiate action in an exhibition at No. 8 Akron (Aug. 20) and scored the lone Herd goal in a 4-1 defeat... 8 Welcome to Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex We wanted to have one of the nicest soccer facilities in the country and in Conference USA, and we re going to have that. It s going to mean a lot to our soccer programs, and I think we ll have more interest in Herd soccer than ever before. -Mike Hamrick, Marshall Athletic Director About Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex The main entrance plaza, at the corner of Fifth and 26th, is done in sections like that of a soccer ball. A sign similar to the one at the corner of Fifth and 20th - next to the Marshall Recreation Center - will grace the plaza along with plantings. The site was the home of the Veterans Memorial Field House for more than six decades. The Herd s aged former basketball home had fallen into disrepair - but the memorial panel to veterans that graced the side of the old arena was preserved and hangs at the main entrance of the soccer stadium off Fifth Avenue. The main entrance to the 1,006-seat stadium includes a brick plaza. A glass-door entrance from the field into the equipment room, the men s and women s teams have their own locker rooms, training rooms and lounges. There also are visiting team and officials locker rooms. The Herd head coaches and assistant coaches also will have their own offices, in addition to space for graduate assistants and a conference room. Atop the stadium sits a large pressbox area that will accommodate TV, radio and print outlets. Throughout the soccer building, walls are highlighted by sections of Kelly green, and rows of textured block bring definition to the walls. The project, in excess of $8 million, is one of the products of the ongoing Vision Campaign for Marshall University Athletics. 8
