Globally, 4-H collaborates with independent programs to empower one million youth in 50 countries. The researchbacked 4-H experience grows young people who are four times more likely to contribute to their communities; two times more likely to make healthier choices; two times more likely to be civically active; and two times more likely to participate in STEM programs. Congratulations to each fair exhibitor! Not only did the weather cooperate, but everyone worked together in making the 2018 Fayette County Fair the best ever. So I d like to personally THANK YOU. A lot of pride was shown by the hard work, love, and care that everyone put into all of their projects! Closing one chapter is very important before starting another so what better time to do this than now. Yes I m talking about completing a record book and turning it into the club leader by September 15. If you or your child would like record book assistance, please give me a call and a time to get together will be set up. Record books will be judged by members of the Youth Development Committee and other volunteer s mid-october. If you are interested in assisting, please let me know. Cloverly, Michele Your help is needed for an upcoming project workshop: Please save all clean gallon-size cans along with fruit, soup, tuna or cat food cans and pie tins. Iowa State University Extension Fayette County and the Fayette County Fair Board take all feedback into consideration to improve the fair experience for everyone! This evaluation will accept responses until Monday, September 10. 3 Hall of Fame Recipient Tom Mann Tom Mann s 4-H career started as a young boy and continues today. Tom has been involved in the Fayette County 4-H program for over 50 years starting as a 4-H member, mentor to multiple 4-H and FFA members, as well as being a volunteer auctioneer, starting in the mid 1980 s with the live animal auction and switching to an achievement auction in 1995, which he continues today. Integrity and humility is something Tom feels is important and helps teach each of the 4-H and FFA youth he assists showing beef. Tom words include, Trophies are a representation of the hard work that you put in, not things you display for all to see, which has taught those who put in the work that awards can be won and hard work does pay off. Although recently retiring and moving to Kiowa, Colorado, to be closer to his four daughters and their families, Tom commutes back to the Fayette County Fair to serve as one of the county fair achievement auction auctioneers and assist wherever needed. Tom especially enjoys helping and watching 4-H/FFA members with their beef projects that carry blood lines from his farm, Mann s Grazing Hills. 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign Thank you to the members of the Eden Outer Limits, Eldorado Eagles, Fremont Friends and Pleasant Valley Sharpshooters 4-H clubs for donating at least $3 per member to the 4-H ers for 4-H campaign sponsored this past summer by members of the State 4-H council. Contributions raised through this campaign support the State 4-H Youth Conference and financial aid for 4-H programs fees and state sponsored event registrations. Re-enrolling is Important It s that time of year when families must re-enroll to remain 4-H members. After September 15, returning members, both 4-H and Clover Kids must visit iowa.4honline.com and complete the enrollment process as has been done in the past. All youth must re-enroll for the new 4-H year. Those 4 th grade and older must be re-enrolled by December 1, 2018 to receive the yearly $20 county incentive. Those completing the process starting December 2 and after will be responsible for the full $30 payment. Note: This date is different from what was in the past! Record Books due September 15 4-H ers are encouraged to complete a record book and turn it into their club leader by September 15. All forms are available by picking up at the Extension Office or can be found online at fayette/page/record-book-forms The exhibit explanation forms that were filled out for fair can be put in your record book. Simply fill out the back of the forms or junior members (grades 4-6) may continue to use the basic project record book sheet; intermediate (grade 7-8) the experienced and senior members (grades 9-12) the advanced. When completing the forms remember that the year runs from October 1, 2017-September 30, 2018 so be sure to use the grade completed NOT the grade you are currently in. Flash drives with all the record book forms on them are available at the Extension Office for a fee of $5 each. If you would like one for your child or family please call in advance to order. Leaders must have books turned into the office on or before Monday, October 1 in order for books to be processed for county judging. Wanted: Individuals to assist with judging record books. 4 4 4-H Leader Meeting National 4-H Week National 4-H Week will be observed October 7-13, Please talk to your club members on ways current members can promote 4-H throughout the week as individuals or as a group. Some ideas that have been done in the past include: Painting or setting up a 4-H display in a store front window Writing a news release to be printed in the newspaper encouraging youth to join 4-H Making and hanging posters throughout school hallways, in the local convenience and grocery store promoting 4-H. Be sure to include contact information. Wear green all week, selections could include a county fair shirt, a 4-H club shirt or just a plain green shirt. Talk to a friend, and/or their family, neighbors or anyone that might be interested in joining 4-H. Please submit photos, identifying those in the picture along with a small description sharing what your club members did to promote 4-H! Important Forms for 4-H Leaders A kick off to the new 4-H year leaders meeting will be held on Monday, October 1 at 7:00 pm at the Extension Office. More information will be sent directly to 4-H leaders in mid-september but please mark your calendar today. Save a trip Record Books may be turned in at the meeting. State Fair Exhibits Exhibits that were selected to represent Fayette County in the 4-H building at the Iowa State Fair can be picked up during our regular business hours for 8 am-4:30 pm. Please pick up at your earliest convenience as our meeting room is being used for other meetings and space is limited. 7 Dear Clover Kids, Congratulations on the great job each of you did exhibiting at the 2018 Fayette County Fair. It is a pleasure watching you participate in Static judging or showing your pets, dogs and bucket bottle animals. As we move into the new 4-H year, I would like to remind you we do have a Clover Kids record book available from the Extension Office. The Clover Kids record book is set up to be done on a monthly basis and know it s not too late to get started. The youth may either draw a picture or write a sentence or two telling what they did that month. All Clover Kids who submit a record book will be recognized at the Awards Celebration and receive a completion award.
