Junior Camp, for members 8-11 years old, will be June 7-10th and Teen Camp, for youth ages 12-14, will be June 4-7th. Contact the Extension Office or Crystal Karhoff for an application and health form which are due to the Extension Office by May 1st. A camping fee of $85/camper or $80/ camper with 2 campers in the same immediate family should accompany the application. Make checks payable to the Knox County 4-H Council. 2 National Volunteer Week April 23-29, 2017 Take a moment during this week to remember the many 4-H volunteers that make our county program a success! Knox County 4-H currently has 56 ACTIVE volunteers enrolled in one or more projects. Consider sending a thank you note to a project leader or club leader! Show-Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) If you missed the training, you will need to complete the training online at by June 1st to be eligible to exhibit livestock in the state of Missouri. After completing the training, please contact the Extension Office so that we can change your status and send you your SMQA card. World Wear Project Knox County 4-H Council has decided to participate in the World Wear Project Shoe Box Program as a fundraiser for the Knox County 4-H program. The Shoe Box Program accepts wearable basketball, jogging/ running, tennis, court, aerobic and training shoes. Shoes should be in wearable condition, no stains, holes or overly worn on the outside or soles. Also accepted are wearable men s shoes, women s shoes, and kid s shoes. Shoes should include wearable all leather and leather look-alike tennis shoes, sports shoes, casual shoes and dress shoes. They do not accept winter boots, foam flip flops or any shoe with metal cleats. Shoe donations may be dropped off at the Knox County Extension office during regular business hours. If you have any questions, please contact Crystal at H State Congress The Missouri State 4-H Congress will be held May 31-June 2, 2017 for Missouri 4-Her s ages The Missouri State 4-H Council plans and implements the event that is held on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. At State Congress, delegates have the opportunity to learn the life skills of a super leader, connect with experts in quality workshops and learning opportunities. Delegates get to experience campus life by staying in residence halls, eating in campus cafeterias and learning in college classrooms. Those attending get to meet other 4-Hers from across the state in a fun filled atmosphere and even get to help elect regional representatives and state officers. More information can be found at main. Registration opens March 1st in 4-H Online and the cost is $225. Registrations need to be completed by April 10th. 3 Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its sixth year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers and college professors, will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking, Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years of age interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be held June 21-22, 2017 and registration is due May 16th. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. For more information, contact Patty Fisher at fisherp@missouri.edu or and be sure to download the brochure on the Missouri 4-H page at Show Stock Clinic A Show Stock Clinic focusing on sheep and goats will be held Saturday, May 12, 2017 at the Rockin A Arena outside of Palmyra. Registration will be from 8:00-8:30 am and the clinic will run from 8:45 am until noon. Members will discover more about showmanship, daily care, making weight for the county fair, grooming and animal selection. Live animals will be on site for hands-on practice. The concession stand will be available for lunch and fitting demonstrations will be provided after lunch. RSVP by April 28th for the early bird registration of $10/youth. This opportunity is being coordinated by MU Extension Livestock Educator Brenda Arnold. Missouri Sheep Producers Starter Flock Program Goal: To provide a current Missouri 4-H or FFA member a grant opportunity to purchase ewes for a starter flock. Reward: Up to three winners will receive a $600 grant to be used to purchase ewes from a current MSP member and work with this member in a mentoring program. The sheep purchased may be purebred, registered or commercial stock. Applications must be postmarked by May 15th. Details at MU Animal Science Youth Leadership Academy This four-day program will focus on increasing knowledge of Missouri s diverse and dynamic livestock industry, as well as building participant s leadership and communication skills. Twenty high school students will be selected to participate in the session based upon educational, community, and agricultural involvement, as reflected through an application process. Students will have personalized instruction and interaction with counselors, professors, and livestock industry leaders. The goal of this academy is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and help prepare them for a successful future in their endeavors. The participants will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership development, learn about current issues regarding livestock production (all species), tour industry leading operations and businesses, and interact with University of Missouri. 4 2nd Annual 4-H Day with the Kansas City Royals Missouri and Kansas 4-H members, parents, volunteers, supporters and alumni will gather at Kauffman Stadium on Friday September 8, 2017 for the 2nd annual 4-H Day with the Royals playing the Minnesota Twins. Tickets for the game will be early bird $40 each by April 15 or $60 by July 15, and this includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Royals emblem on the front. Pregame ceremonies will include one 4-H member joining the Captain s Club to represent 4-H prior to the game and four 4-H members and/or volunteers attending batting practice. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Royals website at Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline, so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must order together. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Royals raffle to win prizes. Complete information can be found on the print order form. Summers at Mizzou Do you have an idea you want to turn into your own business? Do you like helping people? Do you want to learn about drones? Are you interested in science? Camps are offered the week of July 9-13 and July Mizzou offers even different camps: Scrub In to a Health Career, Build-a Business, Dog Days of Summer, Network Forensics for Hacker Trackers, Robo Palooza, Telling the Story of the Stars and GeoTech: Drone Camp. These camps are offered as residential or day camps. Camps are available for a wide range of ages beginning with 12 year olds; check registration information for the age range of each camp. Annual MU College of Veterinary Medicine Open House Don t miss this year s College of Veterinary Medicine Open House to be held April 22nd 9am-3pm. This is a free event and open to the public. Watch the Purina Incredible Dogs preform, tour the Veterinary Health Center and try your hand at milking a cow-the old fashioned way. There will be informational lectures, including information on how to apply to the college, free wagon rides from the Missouri Mule Team, and much more. Free Volunteer Training on Mandated Reporting A statewide group of social service and educational organizations worked together to create a fee, online training on Mandated Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting. The training itself is not required of 4-H Volunteers. However, 4-H Volunteers DO fit the definition of mandated reporters (i.e. someone who has temporary care, custody or control of minors); therefore it is enormously helpful to know the basics that are included in the training: legal requirements of the mandated reporter, child abuse/neglect defined and indicators of child abuse/neglect, plan for responding to suspicions of child abuse/neglect, and effective reporting. 5 Veterinary Feed Directive As of January 1, 2017, medically important antimicrobials in medicated feed have become veterinary feed directive (VFD) drugs, and the resulting VDF feed must be authorized by a licensed veterinarian and distributed and used in compliance with the VFD regulation. Also animal producers will no longer be able to use these VFD feeds for growth promotion or feed efficiency. Learn more about what this means to you by visiting the website: State Poultry Day State Poultry Day will be held June 17, 2017 in the Animal Science Building on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri from 8am until 3:30pm. This will be a youth training/skills demonstration event in an educational format. There will be two educational sessions for the day which will include production judging contest, fun poultry quiz bowl, domestic poultry photo contest and a dozen eggs contest. This will be a great opportunity for leaders to pick up information and materials they can take back home to assist their poultry training and programs for members to hone their skills in a voluntary just for fun quiz bowl. Registration opens April 15th in 4-HOnline. The event is open to all 4-Hers, but participants 14 and over (4-H age) will be placed in the senior division. It is $20 for both youth and adult registrations until May 15th. Late registrations will be $25 until June 1st. For further information, check out H Horsemanship & Trail Clinic The H Horsemanship and Trail Clinic will be held May 6th from 12-5pm at the Mid-MO Saddle Club in New Bloomfield, MO. The Trail Clinic will introduce the basics of the trail class. Participants will learn how to achieve success with their horse including topics like fearful horses, groundwork, and transitions. The Horsemanship clinic will focus on attacking the pattern. Participants will learn fundamental maneuvers that will allow the rider to excel in the show arena. The cost for 4-H members us $25. Registration information can be obtained form the extension office and is due by April 24th. Drive-On Show Pig Camp Johnson County Fairgrounds, Warrensburg, MO The annual show pig and leadership camp will be held April 29, There will be great speakers, prizes and giveaways during the day. The cost of the camp is $35 for youth registration and $5 for parent registration. The registration will cover a t-shirt, lunch and snack for everyone involved. Registration is due April 17th. University of Missouri Pork Institute June 12-14, 2017 Columbia, Missouri The University of Missouri Pork Institute is an intensive three-day educational program. Its goal is to instruct young people in profitable pork production, introduce them to the latest technological developments and train them to be leaders in the U.S. pork industry. Participants will compete for two $500 college scholarships. This event is open to young men and women who are interested in a pork industry career. Participants must have been high school students in the spring of Cost will be $100 per student and this covers registration, materials, meals dormitory lodging and field trips. Small Animal Show Clinic The Small Animal Show Clinic will be held Saturday April 29th at the Green City City Park from 10am-12pm for members enrolled in rabbits, poultry and cats projects. The topics to be covered include: showmanship, ethics, general care and selection, and health and feeding of your show animal. Participants are invited to bring their own animal for hands-on practice. Early registration for youth will be $10 if postmarked by April 21st. Late registration, including the day of the event will be $15. Lunch will be provided for youth and is available to adults for $5. SHOW CAMP Saturday April 22nd Lewis County Fairgrounds Lewistown, MO Show Camp is open to current and future 4-H and FFA youth and will cover show animal management, show preparation day of the show and showmanship. Registration will begin at 9:30am with the general session to begin at 10am. Swine and Sheep Breakout sessions will run from 10:15 to noon and Beef and Goat break outs from 12:30-2pm followed by a Wrap Up Session. Lunch will be from noon to 12:30 and is sponsored by Fleer Feeds and Hubbard Feeds. 7 Scotland County Fitting Clinic The Scotland County Fitting Clinic will be held May 12-14, 2017 at the Scotland County Fairgrounds in Memphis, Missouri. Featured Speaker on fitting cattle will be Chuck McCullough. Participants are invited to bring your own calf for hands-on experience! Materials 1 hula-hoop per participant, 50 s music, cassette or CD player Activity a hula-hoop can help youth (and adults, too!) work stomach muscles or obliques! Make hip circles with a hula-hoop by standing with the feet apart, holding the hoop at hip height, bringing it back to one side as a wind up, and letting it go and rotating the hips in a circle. Encourage youth to see how many circles they can do. Engage them in a friendly competition who can hula-hoop the longest, fastest, with multiple hoops? Music from the 50 s can set the stage for a nostalgic event! Clover Kids Corner: Scrumptious Sundae Let s make a delicious and nutritious snack! Make sure to ask an adult for help! Ingredients: Equipment: 1/2 Cup Low-fat flavored yogurt Plastic Knife 1/2 Graham cracker sheet Small Bowl 1/2 Banana Spoon Steps: 1. Before making a snack, make sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water. 2. Measure the yogurt into a cup or bowl. 3. Break the graham cracker into small pieces and put on top of the yogurt. 4. Peel and slice the banana and place it on top of the sundae. 5. Enjoy!
8 Your Inside look on Northeast MO 4-H April 2017 Northeast Regional Energizer February 18 th The Northeast Regional Energizer was held on February 18th at the Macon First Christian Church. We had a grand total of Hers, 8 adults, and 5 Regional Representatives. 4-Her s spent the day making new friends, learning about leadership, attending workshops, and having fun! Interviews for the Level 3 Report Forms and for the Regional Representative positions were held. It was a very successful day and we hope to have an even better turn out next year! State Council Update Applications for the State Council Executive Committee (President, Vice President, etc.) have been turned in any Regional Representatives wanting to apply. The State Council will now vote to select two candidates fro each position and officers will be selected by the delegates at the 2017 Missouri 4-H State Congress. Committees were also hard at work preparing for workshops for the Teen Conference held the last weekend in March. Teen Conference March 25th-26th delegates from all over Missouri, ages 11-13, joined State 4-H Council members and staff in Columbia for a weekend full of leadership, fun, workshops, and friends! Delegates attended workshops titled Belonging, Generosity, and Mastery. They dances, made spirit chants, and heard from motivational speaker Camille Yameen. Approximately Her s were present, breaking the record for Teen Conference attendance! It was an awesome weekend full of fun and we cannot wait to make next year s even better! Delegates will also participate in the Dollar Dance. State Council members will go onto the dance floor and dance with any delegate for $1 per dance and all funds collected will go to Kids Helping Kids. The theme this year is beach so we encourage you to grab your best beach gear and join us for three days full of fun! Registration is currently open on 4-H Online and will close April 15th! We hope you will join us and make this the biggest and best State 4-H Congress yet!
