It is open to all members, Cloverbuds and 4-H ers, ages A nationally recognized element of the Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Program, it is often credited by 4-H alumni as having given them an edge above their peers in high school, college, and beyond. It is a good opportunity for youth to develop poise and self confidence in front of a small group, build public speaking skills and express ideas clearly and creatively. Training for leaders, parents and 4-H ers, new and experienced, will be held on Tuesday, January 29 at 6:30 pm here at the CCE Office, 50 West High St, in. Training will cover the types of presentations, age guidelines, how to pick a topic, the 4-H presentation format, tips for posters and PowerPoints, a review of the evaluation guidelines and sheets, with breakout sessions for horse communications and Cloverbuds. 3 19th Annual The Fred Sanders Award for 4-H Youth SAVE THE DATE! June 1, 2019 Fairways of Halfmoon Registration 7:30 a.m. Shotgun Start at 9:00a.m. Fred Sanders grew up showing cattle at the Saratoga County Fair. His individual successes propelled him to show at several fairs and included trips to the NYS Fair where he had his share of memorable times. In a tribute to his 60 years of showing cattle and his passion to see youngsters involved in showing at the fair, a continuing Fred Sanders Award was established to begin with the 2012 Saratoga County Fair. Fred had a passion for showing cattle and enjoyed watching the local 4-H ers showing their cattle at the fair. Each year, in his honor, the winner s name will appear on a wall plaque in the Saratoga County Fair Office as well as a $250 cash award and an individual plaque presented in the show ring to the Saratoga County 4-H er who garners the highest points total from the following: 5 Points: Awarded to 4-H ers who participates in a minimum of 5 county dairy bowl practices as either a participant or teen coach. 5 Points: Awar ded to the 4-H ers who participate in at least 1 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging event. The Saratoga County Fair judging class does not count. 2 Points: Awar ded to 4-H ers who participates in judging class at the Saratoga County Fair 10 Points: Awar ded to any Sar atoga County 4-H er who participates on Public Presentation Day/ Make-Up Day in March. 1 Point: Will be awar ded each time a 4-H er participates in a 4-H Dairy Club meeting or activity. 5 Points: Awar ded to 4-H ers who create an educational poster or display that falls under Dept. 12General Animal Science, Section A, Class 6- Posters illustrating and animal science topic in the Saratoga County 4-H Fair Book. Points Awarded for participation in Fitting and Showmanship at the Saratoga County Fair: 10 Points: Blue Danish Score 7 Points: Red Danish Score 4 Points: White Danish Score Additionally, points will be awarded for each of the following classes in Dept. 1, Section H of the 4-H Fair Book. Class 1: Best Br ed and Owned by exhibitor (all br eeds competing together ) Class 2: Daughter Dam Class 3: Exhibitor s Her d (all br eeds competing together and her d may be split by br eeds) 3 Points: 1st Place 2 Points: 2nd Place 1 Point: 3rd Place *In the event of a tie, a Dairy Challenge exam will be given to break the tie* For the 2019 year, the point system will be in effect as of January 1, Get Outside this Winter: Snow Shoes Available Thanks to donations from the 4-H Leaders Association and Teen Council, we now have 17 pairs of Snow Shoes available to clubs and members. They can be used at the 4-H Training Center or checked out for use at other locations. We have a wide variety of sizes as well, so there should be something for everyone. Call the 4-H office to reserve them for your next meeting! HAVE A BALL at the First Annual 4-H Clover Bowl! What: Saratoga County 4-H Clover Bowl When: Saturday, February 2nd from 2:00-5:00 Where: Spare Time in Clifton Park Cost: $15.00 Join us for the First Annual 4-H Clover Bowl! It s guaranteed to be a great afternoon of bowling for our 4-H members and their families. $15 gets an hour and a half of bowling, shoe rental, pizza and soda. 4 Save The Date! STARR Teen Trip Saratoga County 4-H Robotics at the Red Hook Qualifier When: April 5th-7th, 2019 Where: NYS Fairgrounds The Saratoga County 4-H FTC Teams had a great showing at the Red Hook Qualifier on December 16th. From the HazMatrix FTC Team: We had a great day at our first meet of the year at Red Hook High School. We had 6 of our team members attend, and for all of them it was their first experience at competition. We did great in the qualifying rounds and ended up being ranked first going into the semifinal alliance section. Our kids thought hard and decided to invite fellow 4-H Team Beta from Plattsburg to compete with us. They had been ranked 3rd themselves, but decided to join forces with us. Together we won the semifinal and final rounds to win the tournament! This advances HazMatrix to the regional level at Pace University in February, but up next will be Albany in January. Albany is another local meet, but we hope to use it to hone our skills! We would also like to recognize the Saratoga County 4-H Robovines team for providing valuable feedback to our kids technical questions over the past few months, which contributed to our success in Red Hook. From the Robovines FTC Team: The Robovines competed in their first competition of the season at Red Hook High School on December 16th. The team, coached by Tyler and Lisa Russell consisted of 6 members, Zane Swatling, Chris DuMais, Caitlyn VanDeusen, Shane Thrasher and Ryan Robichaud. The team worked hard to get their robot to perform they way they wanted it to, and ended up placing 10th out of 17 teams. When it was time for awards, the team won the Motivate Award, which rewards them for their outreach. They also got 2nd place for their programming ability. They look forward to competing again on January 19th at Albany Academy. GET TO STEPPING! The H Walkathon is Right Around the Corner! What: Saratoga County 4-H Walkathon When: Saturday, May 11th Where: Orenda Pavillion - Saratoga Spa State Park That s right 4-H ers, it will be here in no time! The Saratoga County 4-H Walkathon, a day full of fun that is for a great cause! As most of you know, this is our annual and largest fundraiser to support the 4-H Training Center. Almost all of our members and leaders have used the 4-H Training Center at some point, and we want you to think about what a great resource it is. If we want to not only keep this resource, but continue to improve it, we need your help! Upgrades and improvements are on the way for the 4-H Training Center. The goal for 2019 is to raise $12,000! That can only happen if you participate! Sewing Sensations! Are you interested in learning how to sew or enhance your sewing skills? We will be offering Sewing I, & II for interested 4-H ers!!! Who: Sewing I - is for members at least 8 years old, who are first time sewers. Sewing II - is for members with at least 1 year sewing experience with 4-H What: Lear ning Basic skills including operating a sewing machine, using a pattern, seam finishes, hemming, and more! Below are the projects that will be created: Sewing I Apron Sewing II Fleece Pajama Pants When: J anuar y 19th, Febr uar y 16th and 18th for both sections. Explore stars, constellations and the hidden meanings behind them! Would you like to experience learning more about these plants and their surroundings with the company of others with similar interest while having fun? If so, please join us for our Horticulture Training sessions! Participation in this training allows you the opportunity to participate in the Horticulture Judging Contest at County Fair and could, perhaps, place you on a county team to represent Saratoga County at the NYS Fair, with an opportunity (if you meet the qualifications) to go on to national competition. If you are between the ages of 8 and 19 and desire to learn more about plants -- their identification, culture and care requirements, as well as how to judge plant materials, please plan to attend our monthly training sessions. We meet at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 50 West High Street in. If you have any questions, please give Sue Beebe a call at (518) The 10th Annual Saratoga Horseman s Social February 22, 2019 at Longfellows, 6:30pm-9pm. Cost $30. The social is THE event for the capital region horse community to get together and talk horse. By the end of February everyone needs a night out after hunkering down all winter. This social networking function was originated by the CCE Equine Leadership committee to encourage horseman of all disciplines to get together and discuss the state of the industry and foster relationships within the equine community. The cost is $30.00 per person and includes heavy hors d oeuvres, soda, bottled water, coffee and tea. County Horse Bowl 2019 Dairy Bowl 2019 Horse Bowl practices will take place every Tuesday at the Cooperative Extension Office at 6:30pm. It s not too late to join. Do you have an interest in learning more about dairy cattle and the dairy industry. Would you like to test your knowledge in a fun and exciting competition? Then 4-H Dairy Bowl is for you! Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to come and get involved. To be on the county team, youth must compete in the County Horse Bowl, which takes places in mid February at the 4-H Office. The date for this has yet to be finalized. Call the 4-H Office (518) for more information. Our Dairy Bowl teams will begin practicing every Tuesday evening starting January 8th right up until the District Event on March 2nd. Whether you are new to Dairy Science s or think you know all there is to know, we have a team for you. 6 Community Service Teen Update Gingerbread Project Gingerbread Houses in 2018 were outstanding! In addition to a record number of houses, there were four locations displaying the houses. The houses were on display in Saratoga Springs at the Festival of Trees, in the Public Library, at the Arts Council, and in the CCE Building in. Hundreds of people viewed them during the Victorian Streetwalk, and daily visits to all locations. On Tuesday December 18th, we took the houses to various senior citizen homes, soup kitchens etc, for their clients to enjoy just in time for the holidays! Thank you to all the clubs that participated! 4-H For Leaders Teen Council Upcoming Events WHO: WHAT: WHEN: WHERE: Program: All 4-H ers 13 and older Teen Council Meeting Sat., Jan. 12th 7:00-9:30pm 4-H Training Center Birds of Prey Presentation The November Teen Council meeting found us collecting junk to construct a wild and wacky Rube Goldberg machine. Through nearly a dozen different actions, our machine performed the difficult task of turning off a light. We had a great time, and appreciate the Charlton 4-H Leaf Clovers for helping us with our crazy invention! H Leaders Association As a leader (organizational, project, or activity) you are an essential element in the successful 4-H experience of every member. Also, it is important that you the leader have a successful experience. All of our 4-H Adult and Junior Leaders are invited to join the 4-H Leaders Association to help them grow The 4-H Leaders Association is a unique combination of a new and an established forum for all leaders. The first portion of the meeting will focus on a specific topic or process, followed by a leaders forum, ending with the business meeting of the Leaders Association. There will be information sharing, discussion, how to s, and hands on activities for all leaders. Don t be left out or miss out on making things happen in your club. Be an active participant in the 4-H Leaders Association. Leaders and Junior Leaders please join us on January 14th at the 4-H Office for our first meeting of 2019! 2019 meeting dates are as follows: Natural Resources January Office March Office May Office September TC November TBD 4-H Shooting Sports Spring Program Saratoga County 4-H Shooting Sports will be offering a ten week fall program. Open to students from 12 to 18 years old, this program provides an introduction to the shooting sports program. Archery, air gun, small bore rifle (22 rifle), muzzle-loading, and shotgun are among the disciplines that will be presented. Safe and responsible handling of firearms is an essential element of the program. Responsibility and home firearms safety are components that are continually stressed and reinforced as well. Providing an awareness of firearms and the basic elements of firearms safety is a common thread throughout the course. The program begins Tuesday, March 12th and runs through May 14th. The program is held at the 4-H Training Center from 6:30pm to 8:30pm every Tuesday. Any questions or to pre-register, please call The cost of the program is $25 for existing 4H members, $30.00 for new members, $20 for an accompanying adult, $60 family cap. Mandatory attendance is required at the first class for adults registering a student. All students must be at least 12 years of age. Registration fees cover the cost of equipment and materials. 6 Our annual Christmas Party was held at the December Teen Council meeting and we had a lot of fun! We had a gift exchange and holiday treats. We also participated in a great community service project: purchasing and wrapping gifts for families in need this holiday season through the Adopt-a-Family program. Meetings will start at 6:30pm All 4-H Teens are invited to our January meeting, where we will be discussing plans for a Teen Council Ice Skating outing and a Winter Lock-In. Our program will feature a Birds of Prey Presentation with a chance for members to interact with live raptors. We hope to see you there! 11

Our kids thought hard and decided to invite fellow 4-H Team Beta from Plattsburg to compete with us. They had been ranked 3rd themselves, but decided to join forces with us. Together we won the semifinal and final rounds to win the tournament! This advances HazMatrix to the regional level at Pace University in February, but up next will be Albany in January. Albany is another local meet, but we hope to use it to hone our skills! We would also like to recognize the Saratoga County 4-H Robovines team for providing valuable feedback to our kids technical questions over the past few months, which contributed to our success in Red Hook. From the Robovines FTC Team: The Robovines competed in their first competition of the season at Red Hook High School on December 16th. The team, coached by Tyler and Lisa Russell consisted of 6 members, Zane Swatling, Chris DuMais, Caitlyn VanDeusen, Shane Thrasher and Ryan Robichaud. The team worked hard to get their robot to perform they way they wanted it to, and ended up placing 10th out of 17 teams. When it was time for awards, the team won the Motivate Award, which rewards them for their outreach. They also got 2nd place for their programming ability. They look forward to competing again on January 19th at Albany Academy. GET TO STEPPING! The H Walkathon is Right Around the Corner! What: Saratoga County 4-H Walkathon When: Saturday, May 11th Where: Orenda Pavillion - Saratoga Spa State Park That s right 4-H ers, it will be here in no time! The Saratoga County 4-H Walkathon, a day full of fun that is for a great cause! As most of you know, this is our annual and largest fundraiser to support the 4-H Training Center. Almost all of our members and leaders have used the 4-H Training Center at some point, and we want you to think about what a great resource it is. If we want to not only keep this resource, but continue to improve it, we need your help! Upgrades and improvements are on the way for the 4-H Training Center. The goal for 2019 is to raise $12,000! That can only happen if you participate! Sewing Sensations! Are you interested in learning how to sew or enhance your sewing skills? We will be offering Sewing I, & II for interested 4-H ers!!! Who: Sewing I - is for members at least 8 years old, who are first time sewers. Sewing II - is for members with at least 1 year sewing experience with 4-H What: Lear ning Basic skills including operating a sewing machine, using a pattern, seam finishes, hemming, and more! Below are the projects that will be created: Sewing I Apron Sewing II Fleece Pajama Pants When: J anuar y 19th, Febr uar y 16th and 18th for both sections. 14 19th Annual The Fred Sanders Award for 4-H Youth SAVE THE DATE! June 1, 2019 Fairways of Halfmoon Registration 7:30 a.m. Shotgun Start at 9:00a.m. Fred Sanders grew up showing cattle at the Saratoga County Fair. His individual successes propelled him to show at several fairs and included trips to the NYS Fair where he had his share of memorable times. In a tribute to his 60 years of showing cattle and his passion to see youngsters involved in showing at the fair, a continuing Fred Sanders Award was established to begin with the 2012 Saratoga County Fair. Fred had a passion for showing cattle and enjoyed watching the local 4-H ers showing their cattle at the fair. Each year, in his honor, the winner s name will appear on a wall plaque in the Saratoga County Fair Office as well as a $250 cash award and an individual plaque presented in the show ring to the Saratoga County 4-H er who garners the highest points total from the following: 5 Points: Awarded to 4-H ers who participates in a minimum of 5 county dairy bowl practices as either a participant or teen coach. 5 Points: Awar ded to the 4-H ers who participate in at least 1 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging event. The Saratoga County Fair judging class does not count. 2 Points: Awar ded to 4-H ers who participates in judging class at the Saratoga County Fair 10 Points: Awar ded to any Sar atoga County 4-H er who participates on Public Presentation Day/ Make-Up Day in March. 1 Point: Will be awar ded each time a 4-H er participates in a 4-H Dairy Club meeting or activity. 5 Points: Awar ded to 4-H ers who create an educational poster or display that falls under Dept. 12General Animal Science, Section A, Class 6- Posters illustrating and animal science topic in the Saratoga County 4-H Fair Book. Points Awarded for participation in Fitting and Showmanship at the Saratoga County Fair: 10 Points: Blue Danish Score 7 Points: Red Danish Score 4 Points: White Danish Score Additionally, points will be awarded for each of the following classes in Dept. 1, Section H of the 4-H Fair Book.
