1 KAY COUNTY P. O. Box 430, Newkirk, OK FAX County Website: State Website: County February 2010 Review important issues before OYE The Oklahoma Youth Expo is fast approaching and as preparations are made to compete at one of the greatest livestock shows in the country, it becomes important to review some important issues. Oklahoma s state agricultural youth programs are committed to encouraging positive youth development through honest and fair practices in regard to junior livestock events, said Rusty Gosz, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension youth livestock specialist. The youth in Oklahoma participate in livestock programs designed to raise an animal that will provide a safe and wholesome product for the consumer, Gosz said. The testing procedures at the Oklahoma Youth Expo are also designed to improve food safety by preventing chemical/drug residues from entering the food chain. This effort aids the learning by youth in understanding their role as producers in the food supply chain and their responsibility to produce safe food products while caring for animals in an ethical manner. One area demanding attention is the issue of extralabel use. The following is a list that constitutes extralabel use in regard to livestock pharmaceuticals and feed additives: increasing the dosage, changing the frequency, changing the route of administration, changing the duration of treatment, changing the disease to be treated and changing the animal species to be treated. For example, Ractopamine hydrochloride is a leanness enhancing agent that has gained regulatory approval with specific feeding rates and times for use in market swine (Paylean, Explode) and market cattle (Optiflex) in the United States. There are other similar approved Beta Agonists, such as Zilpaterol, which to date are only approved for specific regulated use in beef cattle and are not approved for use in species like sheep or goats. Currently, such products have not been approved for use in other species, and no feed additive may be used in an extra-label manner. This extra-label use would violate federal law mandated by the Food and Drug Administration. According to the FDA, the extra-label use of a livestock drug is ONLY extended to a licensed veterinarian. Gosz said there are other recent examples of extra-label use, as well as the use of over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs that would be used in an extra-label manner. Following are real examples of extra-label drug use that resulted in forced action to be taken by the state shows in Oklahoma. In most cases it s not the result of malicious behavior, he said. Instead, it s usually a lack of understanding about extra-label uses that resulted in disqualification and monetary fines. Some OCT products that may be misused include Naproxen (Naprosen, Aleve), Phenylbutazone ( Bute ), Flunixin Meglamine (Banamine), Oxyphenbutazone ( Oxy ), Meclofenamic Acid (Arquel), Acetylsalicylic Acid (Asprin), Acepromazine (Ace), Dexamethasone (Dex), Furosemide (Lasix) and Zilpaterol (Beta Agonist). If there is ever a doubt or a concern, consult your veterinarian, Gosz said. If your veterinarian recommends any kind of extra-label treatment, be sure to get the prescribed treatment in a written prescription and provide documentation to show managers when you arrive at the OYE. Livestock projects provide positive learning experiences teaching many valuable life skills through responsible animal husbandry. The goal is for each exhibiter to develop an understanding about how competition can provide an impetus to not only excel, but to do so with honor and a sense of fairness that comes from operating within a set of rules and guidelines. It s our responsibility and commitment to foster this atmosphere at youth livestock shows in Oklahoma. The OYE is the window through which many view the agricultural industry. Let s take pride in who we are and showcase the best of what Oklahoma has to offer, he said.

Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission is teaming up with 4-H to promote Bake & Take Month during March. The FAPC and Oklahoma Wheat Commission are encouraging 4-H members to bake a product made from wheat and take it to a neighbor, friend, relative or organization during the month of March. The Bake & Take promotion is a wonderful way to get our young people to experience the joys of baking and understand the importance of the cereal grain and wheat grown in our state, said Renee Nelson, FAPC milling and baking specialist. Bake and Take originated in 1972 with the Kansas Wheathearts, an auxiliary organization of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, as a community service event to celebrate the wheat harvest in Sumner County, Kansas. Even though the Kansas Wheathearts disbanded in 2001, Kansas Wheat continues these efforts today. For more information or ideas to celebrate Bake & Take, contact Nelson by calling or ing renee.albers_nelson@okstate.edu. The FAPC and Oklahoma Wheat Commission want to help promote your event, so please contact Nelson if you plan to participate in Bake & Take. 6 KAY COUNTY 4-H CLOVER CONNCTION FEBRUARY, 2010 Page 6 Community Service Opportunity How many times have you been at a restaurant where children are restlessly waiting for their food? Smart Start Kay County has joined with A+ Printing to package a small pad of paper with recycled crayon pieces in a small zip-lock bag. These bags are given to customers with small children a several area restaurants. The scene turns from cranky children and parents to that of children and parents engaged in an activity together. You can help by: - donating used crayon pieces. - or peeling the wrappers off used crayons and melting crayons in the microwave. Soften until crayon pieces melt together and pour into a shape or mold of some sort such as a circle, stick, ring, heart, etc. Do not mix colors together. The new multi-color crayon produces interesting color designs on paper. If you have questions, please ask me about it.
