1 PO Box 430, Newkirk, OK Phone: Fax: December 2010 Fun activities planned for companion animal project If you are an Oklahoma 4-H er and have not been involved in an animal project because you do not have the land to keep a horse, sheep, cow or pig, look no further than the companion animal project. Being active in the companion animal project requires no more space than what it takes for a typical household pet, said Steve Beck, assistant Extension specialist in the State 4-H Office at Oklahoma State University. The great thing about this project is that youth who participate can live in an apartment or on a farm, or anywhere in between, Beck said. Companion animals can be just about anything you d consider to be a pet, including dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as a variety of pocket pets such as hamsters, sugar gliders and others. Doing a project with these types of animals is especially appealing for kids who don t necessarily have the acreage required for a large animal project. It s also a great way for us to reach urban audiences. Emphasis on the companion animal project began about 18 months ago and has really taken a growth spurt during that time. Beck said there are a number of fun activities planned in 2011, including a 4-H Pet Fun Day in February. This event will feature a pet photo contest, a dog quiz bowl, a rabbit quiz bowl and dog obedience classes. We re also hoping to have a Fun Match with dog obedience trails, he said. Last summer we had a pet first aid class that went over very well. In fact, we re in the process of developing curriculum geared toward veterinary sciences. Another event on the schedule in 2011 is the 4-H Sporting Dogs Day, slated April 2 in Stillwater. Dwayne Elmore, wildlife ecology and management assistant professor at OSU, and Chris Richards, Animal Science assistant professor at OSU, will be on hand to share their expertise in upland bird dogs and water fowl retrievers. Also on the agenda in April 2011 will be the Zoo Snooze where participants will learn more about the various careers at the zoo. A program Beck said they are working on implementing into the companion animal project is the PetPALS Project, which is based on an ongoing program out of Ohio State University Cooperative Extension. The PetPALS project helps teach youth about the aging process, he said. The 4-H ers involved in the project take their pets to nursing homes and senior citizen centers. Through their interaction with the residents of the nursing home and those at the senior center, the 4-H ers work on their communication and leadership development skills. It s also great for the residents because they are able to tell stories about pets they had when they were younger. Beck said both state fairs offered four new exhibit categories for the companion animal project this year, including companion animal poster, companion animal photo story board, me and my pet journal and other companion animal item. As with any other project in the 4-H program, the companion animal project provides youth with opportunities to learn project skills all while developing and practicing many different life skills. I m very excited with the popularity of the companion animal project and what it offers to Oklahoma 4-H ers, Beck said. I look forward to seeing how the project grows over the next several years. For more information about the companion animal project or any other projects offered through the Oklahoma 4-H Program, please visit
