1 Page 9 June / July 2011 What is The Green Promise? In today s world, 4-H competes for time from youth and volunteers. As a program we no longer just have to contend with school extra-curricular activities, sports and other youth groups because the global community has entered the picture. We are now connected to a world which screams new, innovative, trendy and immediate. The Green Promise simply describes our optimism that 4-H Youth Development is relevant in a world changing faster than any other time in history. The question is, are we providing youth, families and volunteers with the tools, projects and programs which stimulate interest and relevance? The State 4-H Parent-Volunteer Conference will be examining how Education, Creativity and Innovation prepare members and volunteers for life in the culture of the 21 st Century. Why this focus? Because employers are looking for millennial workplace skills such as knowing more about the world, thinking outside the box, thinking within the box, becoming smarter about new sources of information and developing good people skills. Historically, as a youth development program, our focus is on convergent thinking (single right answer). Is this developing an individual s creative potential or developing the ability to deal with complex problems or ambiguous questions? The question is how can 4-H transform our programming, events and project areas so youth are recognized for their unexpected, thoughtful and even brilliant ideas. Learn more about The Green Promise, July 9, at the State Parent-Volunteer Conference in Stillwater. Early bird registration is $35 and $40 after June 17. Certified volunteers attending the conference for the first time are eligible for a Monsanto Scholarship. The conference program and registration will be posted at oklahoma4h.okstate.edu/volun/eduopp.htm after May 1. 3 Page 11 Do I Use My Own ATV? 4-H ASI ATV Safety Rider Course The ASI, hands-on half-day, ATV Rider-Course is conducted by licensed ATV Safety Institute Instructors. The course offers students an opportunity to increase their safety knowledge and to practice basic riding skills in a controlled environment under the direct supervision of a licensed Instructor. The Rider Course includes pre-ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping/swerving and riding over obstacles. You ll also learn about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and environmental concerns. Taking an ATV Rider Course: Improves riding skills Builds confidence Yes you can, but if you don t have one of the appropriate size, you can make specific arrangements and an ATV of the appropriate size will be made available at the training site. What Do I Have to Bring? ODOT-approved motorcycle helmet Goggles or face shield Over the ankle boots Sturdy gloves Long pants Long sleeve shirt or jacket Gets kids started right Teaches how to Tread Lightly! There will be 4 classes available on two separate dates. Late registration will be an additional $ Tri-County 4-H Camp Hooked On 4-H Lew Wentz Campground, Ponca City, Oklahoma July 19-21, 2011 There are many things happening at this year s camp from workshops to games, sport fishing, videography and swimming. Please complete the camp form attached below and return it to the office. Camp costs this year will be $55.00, which will include two nights and three days of fun-filled activities. The fee this year will also include a camp T-shirt. So be sure to mark your registration form with the size you wear. Camp fees are Remember that we re going with two other counties so get your registration in early. There will be NO bus to transport 4- H ers to and from camp. If you would like to present a workshop at camp, you need to make an outline of your program with time lines and approximate cost and return to the extension office by June 30th. If you are 14 years old or older and would like to be a camp counselor, you must fill out an application form obtained from the extension office and return it by June 20 th. 5 Page 13 90th State 4-H Roundup Plans are underway for the 90 th State 4-H Roundup. It will be on the OSU campus July 26 th -29 th, The cost is $ if you stay in Kerr Hall or $124 if you stay in Village Suites for youth. For an additional cost you can order a t-shirt. Registration forms and payment will be due in the Alfalfa County Extension Office by June 9 th. For more information, please contact the Alfalfa County Extension Office at Attention! 4-H Record Books are due June 30 th, 2011 We would like to encourage every 4-H Member to create a record book. 4-Her s do so much during the year with a little more time and effort all this work can be documented in your record book and medal s can be won. Don t forget the other special awards such as; First Year Member and 4-H Hall of Fame. Deadline for County Books is June 30 th, Special Award Interviews 4-H Special Awards and Jr. & Sr. Hall Of Fame interviews will be held on July 25 th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Interviews will be held at the Alfalfa County Exhibit Building. Individuals will be sent a confirmation letter stating the area for which they are being interviewed and the interview time. Alfalfa County 4-H Achievement Banquet The 2011 Alfalfa County 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on August 16 th 2011, 6:00 p.m. at the Alfalfa County Exhibit Building. All members are welcome to attend. Meal will be provided by the Alfalfa County Adult Leaders.

6 Page 14 Alfalfa County Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Picnic & Party Officer Election Alfalfa County 4-H is going to have a picnic and party at the Cherokee City Park on July 7 th at 6pm. Supper will be provided and will include hotdogs, fixings, chips drinks, and desert. All you need to bring is an appetite! After supper we will elect our county 4-H officers. Each club is allowed five voting delegates, 2 of which must either be a junior or senior 4-H member. For the voting process, junior members are 4-Hers who will be entering the 7 th grade and down for the coming year. Senior members are 4-Her s who will be entering the 8 th grade and up for the coming year. Officer applications are due in the Extension Office by 4:00pm on June 30 th. Applications are available on our web site or can be picked up at the extension office. After our officer elections we will have a swimming party. We will swim until approximately 9pm. All 4-H members and their families are welcome. 4-H Roundup Orientation An orientation for State 4-H Roundup will be held July 7th, 5pm at the Cherokee City Park Items to be discussed include dress code, safety issues, reviewing the program, discussion of travel plans and expectations. Everyone attending Roundup this year must attend or make arrangements with the Extension office. Leather Craft Workshop July 13 th, 2011, 1:30 3:00pm Alfalfa County Exhibit Building Participants will learn about leather craft tools and basic crafting techniques to make their own leather craft item. This will be a hands on workshop with youth making at least one leather craft item from start to finish. Rank 1-4 from the following which item or items you are interested in making. 7 Page 15 Kids Cooking School Make plans to attend the kids cooking school. The hands on classes will be organized in a progression series as to skills learned each day. Final day will be a mystery meal prep utilizing each participant s skill level. Come join the fun and be a Chef for a week. 8 Page 16 Cattle, Swine, sheep and goat nominations for Tulsa State Fair Due July 1, 2011 Steer, barrow, gilt, wether lamb, doe goat and wether goat nominations are required for the 2011 Tulsa State Fair. This year there will be a mail-in nomination process. Nomination kits can be ordered by Ag Teachers and County Extension Educators. Individual families or exhibitors may not request kits. You must go through your Ag teacher or County Extension Educator. Nominations must be postmarked by July 1, 2011 for steers, b arrows, gilts, wether goats, does & wether lambs. Copies of the nominations, ruled and requirements sheets are available at the Extension Office. Contact Tommy if you have any questions.
