1 Page 1 Alfalfa County Cooperative Extension News August/September Make plans to attend the Healthy Living Summit in October Earlier this year, a group of six Oklahoma 4-H ers, serving as Healthy Living Youth Ambassadors, took part in the National Healthy Living Summit in Washington, D.C. As a result, these club members are now in the process of planning the first Oklahoma Healthy Living Summit slated Oct in Stillwater. Gearing up to plan this exciting new event are Healthy Living Youth Ambassadors Beth Armstrong, Grady County; Harlie Shaver, Carter County; Taylor Elliott, McClain County; Hannah Kornele, Woods County; and Sarah Walker and Susan Weckler, both of Payne County. Cathy Allen, who serves as the adviser for this group of ambassadors, said the Oklahoma Healthy Living Summit will serve as a training for 4-H ers who will then go back to their counties and begin projects related to healthy living. Counties can bring teams of youth and adult partners who have an interested in healthy living. When we think about living a healthy lifestyle, we naturally seem to navigate toward eating healthy foods and exercising, Allen said. While these are important components, there are other elements that comprise a healthy lifestyle. Healthy living also encompasses social and emotional health. During the summit, we ll be sharing information regarding nutrition, bullying prevention, safety, stress management and alcohol/ tobacco/drug use and prevention, along with traditional physical health issues. This summit will be a great way for counties to put extra emphasis on the last H in the 4-H emblem. Comprised of head, heart, hands and health, looking at ways to improve the health of club members and their families is part of the goals and outcomes of the 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate. Counties are encouraged to look at their local demographics and determine what health issues residents are facing. When those issues are determined, clubs will take action to address these issues. The great thing about this is healthy living is something we can incorporate into all aspects of 4-H. Activities don t have to be health specific, Allen said. For example, youth who are involved in the beef project can do activities related to how beef fits into a healthy eating plan. Another idea for those involved in the companion animals project can present information not only about pet health, but also the benefits pet owners can get when taking their furry friends on a walk. Over the past several years, the 4-H program has become a national leader in health-related education. Thanks to several Walmart Healthy Living Grants, 4-H ers have been able to promote healthy living across the state. The Oklahoma Healthy Living Summit is open to youth ages 14 and up. Oklahoma State University, U. S. Department of Agriculture, State and Local Government Cooperating. The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service Offers its progra.ms to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or status as a veteran, and is an equal opportunity employer.

7 Oklahoma 4-H Rules and Guidelines have been updated! Contact the Extension office for a detailed copy of the updated Rules and Guidelines. Highlighted below is a summary of major changes: Enrollment Guidelines: Beginning with the new 4-H year, youth who are 8 AND in the 3 rd grade by September 1 may enroll as a 4-H member. This decision was reached, after a committee comprised of county educators, district and state staff reviewed and recommended to change enrollment from age to grade in school. The date of September 1 matches age requirements set by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. No child shall be enrolled in the first grade unless he or she will have reached the age of six (6) on or before September 1 of the school year. Projecting these mandates forward, to enter third grade a child should have reached the age of eight (8) by September 1 of the school year. Any discrepancy will be handled on a case-by-case basis. 4-H membership ends on August 31 following the completion of the 12 th grade or having reached the age of 19 on or before September 1, whichever comes first. Cloverbud membership will be granted to children 5 years old through the grade. Divisions for Participation in Contests and Events Divisions for Participation in Contest and Events will be determined by grade. Graduated Seniors can: Continue to exhibit their projects through the fall state fairs (seniors are responsible for referencing fair guidelines to confirm eligibility). Participate in national 4-H competitive events and/or trips, if qualified or awarded during active membership and are otherwise eligible to participate according to the rules and regulations of the national 4-H trip/event. Fulfill their role as a State 4-H Council member when elected during Roundup. In order to not penalize any 4-H member, the H program year will be a transition year, allowing for the alignment of current events, activities and awards, to grade requirements. September 1, 2018, grade will be the determining factor for activities/events/contests/awards.
