They raise bulls for rodeos, both local and out of state. It s a business Kelly got into 17 years ago when he competed in rodeos as a youngster.

When they aren t rodeoing, they also work auction sales, operate a trucking business and run Wildflowers Inc., a gift and upcycled furniture shop Tesa runs from home.

PBR is the highest level of competition for professional bull riders. Organizers have also invited I m Your Huckleberry to the Built Ford Tough rodeo circuit.

Like many from a small town, I m Your Huckleberry comes from humble beginnings. The Kleins purchased him in 2012 from a breeder from Texas at a sale in Arkansas.

Each has the potential to do as well as their sibling, Tesa said. I m Your Huckleberry gets his name from the Doc Holiday quote in the movie Tombstone.

He bucked off both of his two riders at the PBR Finals in Las Vegas that October. The Kleins purchased I m Your Huckleberry for the typical price for an average bull.

It s exciting that he s competing against all these high-stakes, top-dollar bulls, Tesa said. And sometimes, he even bucks better. In a given year, I m Your Huckleberry attends about 30 rodeos.

3 RIDE OF THEIR LIVES BY KATIE RYAN-ANDERSON It isn t often that small-town people are invited to bigcity, world-class events. But this couple, and their rodeoready companion, attend year after year. Kelly and Tesa Klein, Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative members, live east of LaMoure. They raise bulls for rodeos, both local and out of state. It s a business Kelly got into 17 years ago when he competed in rodeos as a youngster. Today, the couple who didn t meet at a rodeo although in their youth attended several together raises about 20 head of rodeo stock, both bulls and horses. Cowboy hats are one of many they wear. When they aren t rodeoing, they also work auction sales, operate a trucking business and run Wildflowers Inc., a gift and upcycled furniture shop Tesa runs from home. One of their bulls, however, I m Your Huckleberry, has traveled farther than some North Dakotans. At six years old, he attended the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals in Las Vegas, Nev. PBR is the highest level of competition for professional bull riders. Organizers have also invited I m Your Huckleberry to the Built Ford Tough rodeo circuit. Only the top 35 bull riders in the world (including countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, U.S. and Mexico) can compete there. We knew he was special the moment we bought him, Kelly said. Today, the Kleins now have three of I m Your Huckleberry s younger, half brothers. He may have been slower to mature, but he s become unpredictable and smart with a lot of heart, Kelly said. Last year was Huckleberry s best year. He bucked off both of his two riders at the PBR Finals in Las Vegas that October. The Kleins purchased I m Your Huckleberry for the typical price for an average bull. But given movie stars, politicians and other celebrities are now investing in bulls, some bulls like I m Your Huckleberry sell for $25,000 to $100,000. It s exciting that he s competing against all these high-stakes, top-dollar bulls, Tesa said. And sometimes, he even bucks better. In a given year, I m Your Huckleberry attends about 30 rodeos. Already this year, he s traveled the PBR tour to Chicago, Madison Square Gardens in New York City, Kalispell, Mont., and most recently to Billings, Mont. Bucking is a game to I m Your Huckleberry, Kelly said. He does everything he can to get a rider off. He loves being a bucking bull. Bull riders know I m Your Huckleberry as challenging yet they also seek him. That s the kind of bull you want to get on every day, said Stetson Lawrence, a professional bull rider from Trenton, N.D. Lawrence is only one of two riders to ride I m Your Huckleberry and qualify. Judges gave him a score of 82 out of 100. Lawrence is also one of the top 10 bull riders in the world. The other qualifying rider scored an 88. Riders who can qualify are rewarded they can earn a high score that will help them proceed to more prestigious events. Kelly and Tesa recently bought into the legendary David Bailey PRCA card with other professionals like themselves. The bulls will now be listed on TV as Bailey Pro Rodeo. With hope, Huckleberry will earn his way to the Wrangler National Finals in Las Vegas. Other upcoming events for I m Your Huckleberry include PBR Touring Pro and PRCA rodeos this summer. The event is set for Thursday, June 11, at Milnor Public School and Milnor Area Community Center. We ve hired Jamestown Inflatables to provide inflatable games and Touchstone Energy Cooperative to bring its hot air balloon. We expect about 400 people including children and young families as well as grandmas and grandpas, too. Vendors may set up tables as early as 2 p.m. and the event lasts until 9 p.m. Spaces are first-come, first-serve only.
