3 WELCOME Welcome to the June State Newsletter From the words of our HYGAIN nutrition article; It s official, winter is here! Luckily before the cold set in we were able to enjoy the fantastic display of Pony Club competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the 2018 State Sporting, Campdraft and Team Penning Championships both held in April. We were delighted to be able to claim back the Champion State award for the Sporting Championships, which Queensland had previously won for the last 5 consecutive years! A fantastic achievement by NSW riders. Our next State Championship event is not far away with the 2018 State Showjumping & Jumping Equitation Championships being held at Morisset Showground from the 7th 10th July. Entries are now closed, but it is free to go along and watch all the action! Over the last couple of months we have been busy with several new opportunities for members and clubs within the organisation. Our wonderful Official Feed Partner HYGAIN announced in January that it would be supporting 2 Zone events in After receiving many applications, we can reveal that the Zone 7 Jamboree in October and the Zone 23 Jamboree in November will be supported with HYGAIN sponsorship! Congratulations and thank you to all Zones who applied. The opportunities didn t stop there, our Brand Ambassador search with long time partner Horseland came to FROM THE EDITOR close as two lucky pony club members received the good news they had been waiting for. 5 NSW Takes back the Trophy after 5 Years! Over 150 riders from NSW and QLD took part in the Pony Club NSW State Sporting, Campdraft & Team Penning Championships held from the 14 th -16 th April at Dorrigo Showground on the state s midnorth Coast. For the first time since 2012, NSW riders were able to bring home the Champion State Award after QLD had held onto the Sporting title for the last 5 years. Competitors and their families from all over NSW and interstate from QLD were welcomed to the small town of Dorrigo by Zone 9 and the North Dorrigo Pony Club, with Championship Dinners held on the Saturday and Sunday nights. The grounds were carefully prepared with extra yards and equipment brought in from around the region. The State Sporting Championships commenced at 8:30am on Saturday morning with the best Sporting riders from all over NSW and QLD taking part in seven races including the Flag, Barrel and Bending Races. In the Under 11 years competition Nathan Lonsdale from Salt Ash Pony Club in Zone 25 was awarded the Age Champion and Alena Duncan from Cobargo in Zone 14 was just 1 point behind to receive the Reserve Champion title. Age Champion for the 11 & Under 13 years went to Madison Shaw representing Queensland, followed by Zali Duncan from Cobargo in the Reserve place. Queensland competitor Beau Horn was the 13 & Under 15 years Age Champion and Kelsey Kennedy from Willawarrin in Zone 9 claimed the Reserve Championship. The Queenslanders continued their winning streak with Alyssa Sinclair taking out the 15 & Under 17 years Age Champion award, with Hannah Dunn from Walcha in Zone 15 close behind in the Reserve Champion position. In the Associate division Anastasia Martin from Merriwa in Zone 7 was hard to beat, winning the Age Champion award, followed by Kate Patch from Queensland who is no stranger to the Champion position, having held the number 1 title in 2014, 2015 and was the last time NSW beat QLD in the State Sporting Championships and in 2018 the drought has been broken as NSW was named the Champion State with riders Anastasia Martin from Merriwa, Lola Barwick from Gravesend, Alena Duncan from Cobargo and Nathan Lonsdale from Salt Ash were awarded the highest point scoring riders from the same State. The winning Zone was awarded to Zone 25 with riders Nathan Lonsdale from Salt Ash along with Anthony Shultz, Amy Shultz and Jodie Harris all from Gloucester being awarded the highest point scoring riders from the same zone. The State Campdraft Championships kicked off on Sunday 9 th, with just under 100 competitors taking part. The event was judged by Steven Blackadder, with riders fortunate to have two runs in the campdraft, doubling their chances to get a great score. Cattle were brought in from neighbouring farms around the area and were a fantastic standard for the competition according to Zone 26 competitor Ginger Soames who placed 3 rd overall in the 15 & Under 17 years Campdrafting event. It s not very often we go to an event where the cattle are so well suited to the ability of each age group and as a competitor it was great to see each rider respectful of the cattle Ginger said. In the Under 13 years age group, Anthony Shultz from Gloucester in Zone 25 was announced as the Age Champion just ahead of Emily Mills from Moree in Zone 8 who scored equal points with Anthony, but was determined the Reserve Champion on a countback of scores from the judge. Georgia Osmond from Dungog in Zone 25 was well out in front of competitors in her age group, claiming the 13 & Under 15 Years Age Champion while Amelia Stubbs from Hastings District in Zone 9 was awarded the Reserve Champion. The 15 & Under 17 Years Age Champion was awarded to Jacqueline Coombes from Bingara in Zone 8 who scored the highest points in the whole Championship, while Charlotte Maslen from Gloucester in Zone 25 was awarded the Reserve Champion title. The Associate division was very close with Matthew Ireland from Walcha in Zone 13 landing the top spot of Age Champion, closely followed by Anastasia Martin from Merriwa in Zone 7 in the Reserve Champion position. 5
6 Champion State Award with high point scoring riders Anthony Shultz from Gloucester, Emily Mills from Moree, Jacqueline Coombes from Bingara and Matthew Ireland from Walcha earning the champion State title. Zone 25 was also once again the Champion Zone with Georgia Osmond from Dungog along with Anthony Shultz, Charlotte Maslen and Emma Johnston all from Gloucester Pony Club being the highest scoring riders from the same zone. The State Team Penning Championship was the final event to be held with 16 Junior Teams competing for the Champion Team Award. Teams consisted of 3 riders whose aim is to separate three specifically identified cattle from a herd of 30, and put them into a pen at the opposite end of the arena within two minutes. The Team Penning is always fun to watch and this year did not disappoint with very close scores among the top teams. Judge De Hilton was very impressed with the behaviour of the young competitors; those kids were improving throughout the day. Excellent manners and sportsmanship noted from all the teams. The Champion Junior Team was awarded to Zone 22 with riders Taleha Urszulak, Abbey James and Ella-Lin MacMillan all from Woonona Pony Club who were able to pen 3 beasts in a very quick time of seconds. With very little time separating them, the hometown team of Tia Beaumont, Emma Williams and Abby Raymond from North Dorrigo in Zone 9 were just behind in the Reserve Champion position, penning 3 beasts in 87 seconds. In third position was the Celtic Rustlers from Glen Innes Pony Club in Zone 13, followed by the Gloucester Cousins from Zone 25 in fourth place and the Queensland Zone 21 Team in fifth place. A very big thank you to major sponsors Horseland and Official Feed Partner HYGAIN who provided exceptional prizes to all our Age and Team Champions. Recognition must go to North Dorrigo Pony Club and the Pony Club NSW Organising Committee who delivered a fantastic Championship. The State Sporting, Campdraft & Team Penning Championships will be held again in 2019 with applications for suitable venues being welcomed now through the Pony Club NSW Website. The next State Combined Championship for this year is heading to Morisset for the Showjumping & Jumping Equitation Championships being held from the 7 th - 10 th July. 12 How to host an Open Day Moruya PC Debbie Hancock Moruya PC On Sunday the 25 th of February 2018 Moruya Pony club held its Open Day to allow families to come along and see what being a member of pony Club is all about and find out information on how they too can become a member of our great little club. We had a successful day with 43 riders joining on the day, in a small country town like Moruya we were very happy with the numbers and so many new faces. Children of all ages joined up from beginners as young as 2 ½ years to advanced riders. Members all received a goodie bag and entry in the lucky prize draw. The goodie bags included information that new members needed to make pony club an enjoyable experience and were a big hit with the kids. The bags included items kindly donated by Horse land Canberra, Horsewyse magazine, Mitavite, Verbac, Hygain, Moruya Veterinary and PCA NSW We had a gear check and then separated riders into groups with the led riders heading into the enclosed arena where they did some bending, trotting and enjoyed playing some games like what s the time Mr Wolf. Our other riders had a great day with a variety of riding skills being taught moving around between activities including flat work and sporting. We finished the day off with a casual lunch, drawing our lucky prize draw and everyone getting to know each other a little better. We are looking forward to another wonderful year of pony club ahead and very excited as this year marks the 60 th Anniversary of Moruya Pony Club. The Open Day will become an annual event for the club after having such a successful day. 12

18 The Long and the Short of it at Lake Albert Pony Club Rachel Whiting Lake Albert PC Lake Albert Pony Club ran its annual camp for members and clubs from far and wide on the first weekend of the April school holidays. Instructors, local businesses, parents and community members volunteered their time, food and other items to make the event possible. Children participated from the age of 5 to 18 and from all over the Riverina/Murray region including Pony Club Zones 12 and 20. Activities included the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing and the Australian grown team penning, polocrosse and sporting. Vice President of Lake Albert Pony Club Michelle Eastwood said The great thing about camp is that all children get to try everything without competition nerves. They are on their horses for 3 days which can see amazing advancement over that time. We had a number of children with firsts over the weekend. Whether it is the first time off the lead, the first cross country jump or the first experience with a real live cow, Lake Albert Pony Club camp built amazing memories for everyone involved. 22 Your Winter Nutrition Plan Starts Now! by Clair Thunes, PhD Equine Nutritionist weather (ambient temperature, wind chill, humidity). A horse s lowest energetic state is called maintenance and applies to horses and ponies that are not in work, are not pregnant or lactating, are in good health and do not have to deal with major climatic demands. It is official, winter is here and with it the challenges in horse keeping unique to the season. One of the most common challenges is to maintain condition. When we think of winter we often think of weight loss. Often weight loss seems to occur out of nowhere. Often we don t become aware until there has been significant weight loss. With careful management and attention to detail preventative steps can be taken. Maintaining condition is all about energy balance. When energy in equals energy out, body condition is maintained. This means that if the energy content of the diet you feed your horse exactly meets your horse s energy requirement it will maintain a constant weight. Knowing this, the question then becomes, what factors affect a horses demand for energy? These factors include; reproductive state (pregnancy, lactation), level of activity, age, overall health status, and Dietary maintenance energy requirements differ by the size of horse as obviously it takes less energy to maintain a Shetland pony than it would a hack. For example, a 200kg (440lb) pony has a maintenance requirement of 6.7 Mcal per day compared to 16.7 Mcal per day for a 500kg (1100lb) horse. Assuming an energy density of 2.2 Mcal per kilogram (which is typical of many grass hays) their Mcal for maintenance approximately equals the number of kilograms of hay needed per day to meet that requirement. Each time you add a factor such as work, your horse s energy demand increases, the diet must include more energy or the horse will lose body weight and condition. Cold weather requires that a horse burns more energy to keep warm, and therefore less energy is available to maintain other functions unless dietary energy intake is increased to compensate. This is one reason why horses tend to lose weight over the winter. The best thing you can do to insure that your horse comes out of the winter in the condition you want them to be in is to insure they go into winter in good condition, and 22
23 then provide enough energy in the diet to meet requirements. During the colder winter months, horses have to expend extra energy to keep warm and that means that the maintenance requirement increases. Older horses are generally less efficient at both digestion and thermoregulation and so are more susceptible to extremes in temperature. They will therefore need a diet that is more easily digestible and may require intervention earlier than their younger counterparts to stay warm. Young horses especially those under a year of age are also less able to handle cold weather in part due to the large amounts of energy that are being utilised for growth. They should be provided with good shelter and ample access to good quality hay. Should you find yourself needing to put extra weight on your horse the first step is to increase the amount of forage being fed. High in soluble fiber, HYGAIN Micrbeet provides energy at a level between good quality hay and grains. HYGAIN Fibressential is an excellent fiber source with enhanced levels of digestibility making it a great choice for senior horses with poor dentition. Other good choices of feeds for weight gain include fat supplements such as HYGAIN Tru Gain. With a fat content of 20 percent, Tru Gain increases the calorie content of the diet without fizz. If looking for a high calorie feed the extruded grains in True Care are more readily digestible in the small intestine making it an excellent choice for hard keepers and senior horses whose digestive tract may not be working as efficiently as they once did. It is possible to successfully maintain body condition in the winter even with a hard keeper, but it takes a close eye and constant assessment. In cold weather this has the added advantage of helping maintain body temperature as fermentation in the hindgut generates heat. In some cases even with plentiful forage either the horse will not consume enough or perhaps digestion is not as efficient as it could be and weight gain remains an issue. In this situation a more energy dense feed can be added to the ration such as HYGAIN Micrbeet or HYGAIN Fibressential. 23
