3 State & District News Continued YOUTH PQA PLUS TO BE DISCONTINUED The National Pork Board will be discontinuing the Youth PQA Plus program on May 31, After this date, Youth PQA Plus will no longer be available as an option for young people seeking quality assurance training. This means that youth will not be able to certify or re-certify through Youth PQA Plus after May 31, and the National Pork Board will cease to issue youth certification numbers. However, the National Pork Board will honor Youth PQA certifications until they expire, including youth who earn multi-year certification by "testing out." So, youth who plan to nominate swine for the Kansas State Fair or KJLS are HIGHLY encouraged to complete their Youth PQA training by the end of May. Youth who need quality assurance certification after the end of May will need to use the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program. This is the new, national, multi-species youth quality assurance program the National Pork Board will be transitioning their youth participants to in the future. Face-to-face sessions may be taken for $3/child with a certified instructor, or the online version is available for $12/child. More information may be obtained from the YQCA website at or by contacting the Youth Livestock Coordinator, Lexie Hayes, at adhayes@ksu.edu or POST ROCK DISTRICT DOG PROJECT PRACTICES All Post Rock District 4-H Dog Project members are encouraged to attend the Dog Practices held at the Osborne County Fairgrounds in Osborne. 4 State & District News Continued Post Rock District Shooting Sports Corner Happy Spring to you all! Hope some of the recent rain made it your way this past week! Sure helps to put a little Spring back in our steps! Well, there is much to get to in this newsletter, so I won t delay! #1 We have 2 District members headed out to Garden City this Saturday, April 28 th for the State BB Gun Match! Please join me in a District cheer for Kimberlyn Nichols, and Xander Elam as they head west to represent Post Rock! They both hail from Mitchell County, and we are sure excited for them as they leave to compete with approximately 250 contestants! Good Luck! #2 We finished up our beginning shotgun project with a chilly day on the 15 th, and our 5 district kids will now move on to more advanced trap and skeet training at the Osborne shooting park with instructor Dean Heise. We sure had a fun time at Ringneck ranch! The setup, and equipment made available to 4-H by Keith Houghton is just outstanding! So thankful for his time and talents! Although May is a busy time for everyone, we would like to begin at Osborne on Sunday, May 20 th, 2-4pm. We will set dates for June and July as we go along. You are welcome to join us if you have prior experience with a shotgun, and might be interested in being on our Post Rock team for State! #3 I have some preliminary dates for Archery kids to keep in mind. On Saturday, July 7 th at 9am, we will meet at instructor Tommie Bergers house in Sylvan to practice for the upcoming qualifier. ***Important! If you did not attend the archery project in October of 2017, you need to be at this practice!! Even though in times past, we have not required shooters to be enrolled in and attend a project each year, it is a guideline that we will start to follow closely for the H year. You cannot decide on your own to attend a qualifying match without being enrolled in the corresponding project, even if you are an advanced shooter. This year, Tommie Berger has agreed to this one day practice for those that didn t attend the project, but still want to register for the qualifier. Saturday, August 4 is the preliminary date for the qualifier that will be held at Sylvan. This still needs to be set in stone, so please check FB when you can as this is the quickest way to reach all of you with information. Send me a request to join so I can add you on! #4 Drop/Add Please help me by adding or removing your name from the shooting sports projects on 4-H online, based on whether or not you attended that project. I have the actual sign-up sheets from the instructors, and am working toward making it match. If you plan on attending the one-day archery practice, but did not attend the project, then please Add. Goodness! I think that s about all I have for now! Thank you all for your support of our shooting sports projects in the time, talent, and miles! Iva Maier gotangus@ruraltel.net
