Many 4-H members do community service. 4-H members collect canned food, visit senior living facilities, pick up trash around their communities, clean up yards, and so much more. While this is a valuable activity, it could be so much more. It could be Service Learning. Service Learning is a concept of integrating learning and gaining skills into a community service activity. That might sound scary and time consuming, but it doesn t have to be. Be sure to involve 4-H members in the planning, design, implementation, management, and evaluation of a service project. Encourage members to become aware of community needs and think about how they can help. Then as they plan and get involved in all that it takes to do a project, they are really gaining valuable life skills such as leadership, teamwork, concern for others, communication, problem solving, and possibly many more! Youth in your club are essentially learning while they are serving their communities. Suggestions to get started: Invite a guest speaker from the community to come and speak to the youth. (example: director of the local food bank, someone from the animal shelter, mayor or city councilperson, senior center or program director, parks and recreation representative). Visit one of these groups and tour their facility! Have youth (and adults if you need more ideas) list service project ideas on sticky notes to stick on the wall, categorize the ideas by topic, give everyone 2-3 votes, and take the top two or three most votes to explore as possibilities. Club members should also talk about how the service project went either after the activity, during the activity, or at their next meeting. A debrief can really help the youth understand why what they did was important and what still needs to be done in the future by them or by another group. This doesn t have to take a bunch of club time, but it very important for members to share with each other about what they saw, did, and accomplished together. Members of the club could even present what they have done, learned, and concluded about future needs to other community groups and public officials or write an article for the local newspaper. Also, don t forget to celebrate the club s accomplishment in completing a service project! The members of the club should be proud of what they have done for someone else and their community! 10 Cloverbud Corner 4-H Project Area: STEM Life Skill: Stimulate our curiosity about how air power works. Time: 20 minutes Suggested Group Size: 3-12 youth Source: The Big Book of 4-H Cloverbud Activities, Lesson 3, pg. 14. Prep: Gather Supplies. Cut string to 6 lengths (1 per group of 3 youth) Materials: Balloons Tape Straws String (6 lengths) Scissors Activity: 1. Explain that you are going to be doing an experiment using air under pressure. 2. Divide the youth into groups of three. 3. Give each group a straw, balloon, tape, and string. 4. Have the group blow up the balloon and one member will pinch the balloon closed. 5. Have the other two members thread the string through the straw. If they struggle try wrapping the end of the string with tape. 6. Have the members tape the straw lengthways to the top of the balloon (with the string running through it). 7. Have the two members each grab an end of the string and pull it taught. 8. The member pinching the balloon can slide the balloon along the string to one end. 9. Let the balloon go and see what happens. 10. Let the youth take turns launching the balloon rocket. 11. After the teams have all launched their balloon rocket a few times bring them together for a discussion. 12. Ask questions such as: Did the balloon do what you thought it would? If your rocket had problems, were you able to repair it? Did anything different happen when the balloon had different amounts of air? What do you think would happen if only one end of the string was being held? What would happen if you blew up a balloon and let it go with no string or straw attached? 13. If time allows, let them experiment trying different things like using a longer piece of string to see how far it will go. Save the Date - Community Service Opportunity!
