1 THE GREVE FAMILY GENEALOGY from: Recke, Steinfurt, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany (formerly Recke, Tecklenburg, Westfalen, Prussien) The GREVE Coat of Arms This is the coat of arms of a GREVE family. I am not sure if it is the same GREVE family as from Recke, Germany. Below it is another possibility. More research is clearly needed before stating that either is the correct coat of arms for this GREVE family. The shield is described as: The colors shown here may not be a true representation of original colors. Which translates to something like this: In gold two blue diagonally bars accompanied wise blue lilies as well as ever a blue five-sheet in the left, posed by three diagonally bars, upper-hit a corner and right under-hit a corner on the blue bewulsteten helmet between a golden flight an increasing blue lion red armoured and just as gezungt. helmetcover blue-golden.

2 ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT The information included in this document is an attempt to list the family history, genealogy, and relatives of Urban E. and Sylvia A. (Steinke) Schneider. It is far from complete, as families are constantly changing through marriages and births, and new information is collected. The information has been obtained from many different sources. Most of these sources are published family genealogies of those related to Sylvia and Urban Schneider. Most of these sources have reliable references, however, not all sources listed references. The information used is the most accurate at the time of printing, but by no means is it guaranteed to be accurate. Mistakes will be found, and changes will be made as they are discovered. THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A PUBLIC RECORD. Some of the information included may be considered sensitive information, and should not be made available freely to the public. This is especially true of any living relatives. It is an acceptable practice by many genealogy organizations to list only deceased individuals. This document includes much more than that, there for it is not intended for public use. This document is divided into four different sections, as follows: A. SCHNEIDER Genealogy B. VOISARD Genealogy C. STEINKE Genealogy D. GREVE Genealogy Each section begins with it s own set of page numbers. This allows additions to be more easily made without renumbering every page and reference within every section. The following abbreviations are used pretty consistently throughout this document: b. - born d. - died bur. - buried cem. - cemetery bef. - before aft. - after m. - married m2. - second marriage Co. - county twp. - township OH - Ohio Wapak - Wapakoneta FR - France GER-Germany Ter. - Territory Bav. - Bavaria - indicates a cemetery photo is on file for this person s tomb stone - indicates a Death Certificate is on file for this person - indicates that this person immigrated to the United States - indicates an Obituary is on file for this person Page ii

A family business since 1823, the "Altes Gasthaus Greve" can look back with pride on its long history. The innkeeper August Greve purchased the already existing Inn and tavern in In those days draymen were known to take a rest here. August Greve would typically sell rusk* and broth on Sundays after church. Soon after he set up a bakery. Back then local farmers brought their corn in exchange for baked bread. Then council meetings would be held in a small hall above the bakery. A real event around the same time was the opening of the open air skittle alley. * Find a recipe for rusk on page 8 in the next chapter. GREVE-LIMBORG Page 3

WENCKER Family Name The following is from the ancestry.co.uk Message Boards: My name is Martin Wenkers from Emsdetten in Germany... I can help you a little bit about the meaning of the surname "WENKER" or "WENKERS".... If you search about our name, you will see that the most of us are living in the North-West of Germany, Netherlands, and in the USA. There is a reason for that, which is related with our name. The first document of our family in Emsdetten is dated to the year 1498, the same year Columbus discovered America. To that time there were only 30 houses in the village, and one was owned by "Geese Wennekes", so our name was called to that time. The most importend work of the handworkers form Emsdetten were tubs made out of pasture wood. These tubs were called "Wannen" and the handworkers were "Wannenmacher" (perhaps it interesting for you that we have museum about that profession in Emsdetten). For little tubs the word in our flat-german dialect is "Wännkes". The pronouncement of that word is quite similar as if you would write it with an "e". So our surname discribes the profession of our forefathers. These tubs were so popular, that they were sold in the whole known world. Traveling traders (called Kiepenkerle) transported them over an old trade way (Leineweber-Route) to Holland and there they were shipped in the world. Quite remarkable is, that along this way you will find our name quite often.... WENCKER Ancestors Jan WENCKER (WENNEKER) b.1720 Anna?? b.bef.1723 John Bernard WENCKER b.3/7/1744 Recke d.7/26/1815 Recke Steffen RÜMOLLERMaria Catharina Gertrud b.bef.1732 RÜMOLLER Anna?? b.4/19/1756 Recke d.9/26/1820 Recke b.bef.1735 WENCKER could also be from a Germanic personal name formed with Old High German wān ʻhopeʼ as a first element. Parents of Lucy SMITZ Bernard SMITT Bernard Herman SMED John Bernard SMITZ/SMED Ann Elisabeth HAARMS?? Ann Maria Ann GUINHEIT b.1780 m.1797 d.1825 H erman John GREVE was born on September 30, 1820 in Recke, Tecklenburg, Westfalen, Prussien (Germany). He was the oldest of eight known children of Herman Heinrich and Anna Cathrine Theresia (WENCKER) GREVE. Herman John GREVE married Lucia (Lucy) Maria SMITZ on March 7, 1848, probably in Recke. Lucia (Lucy) Maria SMITZ was the only known daughter of John Bernard and Maria Ann (GUINHEIT) SMITZ. Their surname could possibly have been SMED, or SMITT, or even another variation. Lucia (Lucy) Maria SMITZ was born on January 1, 1822 in Recke, Tecklenburg, Westfalen, Prussien (Germany). Herman and Lucy GREVE left from Bremen, Germany for America shortly after they were married, and arrived in New York May 11, Their first child, John Bernard GREVE, was born on the Atlantic Ocean, on the ship B. Bohlen, (similar to below). First settling in Cincinnati, they moved to Dinsmore Twp. in Herman John and Lucia (Lucy) Maria (SMITZ) GREVE had five known children between 1848 and One of which was was born on the ship while immigrating to America. Herman John GREVE died on January 6, Lucia (Lucy) Maria (SMITZ) GREVE died on October 10, Both are buried in St. Lawrence Catholic Church Cemetery, Rhine, Ohio. Page B12 GREVE Ship Records The ship records concerning these GREVE family members are not conclusive, but they are the best I have found so far. Several sources list their year of immigration as 1848, so I can be pretty certain of that. The only GREVE I have found to match this family in 1848 is shown below as H. Greve. This matches the age of Herman John Greve, above. The marks following his age, seem to be an abbreviated form of the word ditto, as they are used throughout many ship records. Here they indicate these passengers were male and farmer. A. Frau could refer to another passenger, however Frau is used at three different places on this ship log, and could possibly mean wife. The age listed could match Lucy GREVE, Herman s wife, so this could be a possibility. However, the ditto marks would seem to indicate that A. Frau is a male and farmer, (but this, also could be a mistake). There seem to be a lot of mistakes on ship records. According to these records, the Bark B. Bohlen left the port of Bremen, Germany. (A Bark is a ship with at least three masts.) It arrived in New York, New York, USA on May 11, It carried 19 passengers in the ship s cabin, and 104 in the steerage area (below the deck). Nothing is mentioned of a child being born on this trip, but that was not always recorded by the captain either. GREVE-WENCKER Page 7

Rusk. - Double Baked - (a common meal for peasants, though they probably would not have had sugar to use in this recipe). One pint of sweet milk scalded and then used lukewarm; half a cake of Fleischmann's compressed yeast dissolved in half a cup full of the warm milk taken out of the pint; three ounces of fresh butter melted; two tablespoonfuls of white granulated sugar; one teaspoonful of salt; three pints of unsifted flour; sift the flour and put it into a large bowl, make a hole in the centre of it and stir in all the ingredients until you have a thin sponge, cover the bowl, set it in a warm place and let it rise three and a half hours; then make it into a dough and put it on the bread board with half a pint more flour and knead it five minutes, then let it rise again one hour, then make it into a loaf and bake it. When it is done and cold cut it into slices half an inch thick and bake them on both sides. Serve with a cup or bowl of beef, mutton, or chicken broth. GREVE-WENCKER Page 8

Beginning of the Parish of St. Dionysius - By Pastor Werner Heukamp, Vic.coop. Many of the GREVE family records are found in the Parish of St. Dionysius in Recke. Here is a history of how that parish began: The parish of St. Dionysius in Recke was probably founded very soon after the appointment of the diocese's first bishop of Münster Liudger (born around 742 in Utrecht, died March 26, 809 at Billerbeck). The choice of the church patron Dionysius points in the period from Dionysius churches were founded in fact almost only in that time, namely on major roads and intersections, such as in northern woods, Havixbeck and Rheine. Also Recke is on a very old road leading from Osnabrück to Lingen (now the street "Am Wall"), leads to the intersection after Voltlage and Ankum. Recke is first found in a document dating from The noble Lord gave Horstmar Wiebold the main courtyard and the church in Recke, and he also talked to the bishop of Osnabrück for the establishment of a monastery. Recke is first mentioned in 1243 as a parish and belonged to the diocese of Osnabrueck. For more photos and history of this church, go to this site: GREVE-WENCKER Page 9
