1 81 th Triangular Athletics Meeting 24 February 2016 SACS 2:00pm 5:20pm
2 THE TRIANGULAR A BRIEF HISTORY One of the earliest records that makes reference to schoolboy athletics in the Western Province is to be found in the annals of the Diocesan College of Three years later an attempt was made by Victoria College, Stellenbosch, to arrange a track and field meeting between themselves, Diocesan College and SACS - but nothing came of this. In fact, according to recent research, inter-schools athletics championships began in 1917, when twelve Cape Town schools took part in a meeting on Newlands Rugby ground, and competed for the Macdonald Cup a silver trophy donated to the competition by John Macdonald in memory of his son killed during the First World War in Flanders. This first competition was won by SACS and the meeting became an annual event. From 1921, country schools joined the competition in increasing numbers, and in 1923 and 1927 the cup was won by Paarl Boys High. For three years after that only city schools took part. When, in 1931, the country rejoined the competition, there was a feeling amongst some that the meeting was becoming too big, the programme crowded with heats, and that inter-school rivalry was becoming over-heated to the detriment of the sport. Hence, Bishops, SACS and Rondebosch withdrew from the Macdonald Cup competition in 1934, and held instead a triangular athletics meeting on the Bishops ground. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent under the oaks at Bishops and as no one worried about points, everybody seemed to be happy, noted the SACS Headmaster. Immediate advantages were that the three schools could enter two athletes instead of one per event and, there being no heats, a greater number of events over a wider range could be included in the programme. It was decided that at this meeting there would be no points scoring. Justification for this decision appears in the Bishops magazine of June, 1934: a) To curb over-competitiveness and unhealthy rivalry between the schools; b) To prevent staff jealousies between the schools. So the SACS-Bishops-Rondebosch triangular became an annual social and sporting event; the programme changed very little from year to year, and participation was in the best amateur spirit. As the 1954 athletics season approached, Messrs D Brown (a SACS teacher), and G J Roux (the WPAAA secretary) began negotiations with Mr Piley Rees of Bishops, to establish a Peninsula Schools Athletics Union. One of the goals was to make the the triangular a mid-week fixture, thereby enabling the athletes from these schools to take part in their provincial and, therefore, national championships - an opportunity of which they had been deprived, since there was an annual clash of dates between the triangular and the W P Junior Championships. So, in 1954, for the first time in 20 years, the W P Junior Athletics Team was strengthened by the inclusion of athletes from these schools.
3 A traditionally conservative approach towards radical change has resulted in the triangular retaining a character of its own amongst athletics meetings. Despite the inclusion of certain under 15 events (1984), the pace of the meeting is still relatively leisurely, which enables supporters to focus on many separate events that seldom come into their own in the more usual crowded programme. In 1985, to celebrate the 50 th Triangular, a team was selected to represent the three schools in a Triangular against Grey-Kingswood-St Andrews and Dale-Queens-Selborne Colleges. The meeting was held in Queenstown on Saturday 30 March and was indeed a memorable occasion. Our combined team was captained by Dean Peacock (Bishops), Dion Steer (Rondebosch) and Joel Dave (SACS) saw SACS host a return meeting, but on this occasion only Dale-Queens-Selborne represented the Eastern Cape. From 1992 Bishops Prep, Rondebosch Prep and SACS Junior Schools decided to hold their own triangular. The under 13 events introduced in 1971 and the under 11 and 12 sprints and relay races were thus excluded from the programme. Today, as we celebrate the 81 th Triangular, there are 45 events on the programme. In 2013 the decision was made to enter three athletes per school for all middle distance events. All spectators are assured of an excellent afternoon s athletics and, above all, healthy rivalry between friends. Doug Brown and Simon Perkin
