Carlsbad 5000 Race Report Written by Sandy Draper It was another great day for the Snail s Pace at Carlsbad on April 1st. Runners from the Fountain Valley, Laguna and Brea chapters, as well as some running academy and racing team folks had a chance to race the wind and compete for individual and team awards. Monet, Luigi, Bob N. and I met at the store at 5 am to carpool to the race. Upon arrival at Carlsbad, Bob directed us to his secret parking location, which was still available at 6 am. That alone made it worth getting up early since there is nothing worse than searching for a parking space, knowing that time is ticking away and you haven t gotten your number yet. We picked up our packets and headed for the team canopy to hang out, cheer on the runners and eventually take our turn at racing. The club canopy was positioned in the optimal viewing location we could see runners passing at ¾ mile, 2 miles and 3 miles into the race. There are five age-group races, plus the people s race, which allows strollers, dogs, walkers, costumes, etc. At the end of the morning, the elites run their race. There is an option for people to run all five of the age-group races, thus completing a total of 25K; however, I think the only Snails who accepted that challenge were from Laguna. The weather was a bit windy, but still good. The expo was typical (free samples of Lara and Cliff bars & lip balm, discount gear vendors and time share touts). The T-shirt was a short-sleeve, promotional-quality tech shirt in white. The medals were nice (but only available to the top 250 in each age-group) and there was a separate medal and T-shirt for the 25K challenge folks. Overall, it was a fun way to spend a morning. (continue on next page) 4
Carlsbad 5000 (continued from previous page) There were several Snail s Pace teams that placed in the top five. 1st Place Mixed Open Team, John Gardiner, Leilani Rios, Humberto Rojas 2nd Place Womens Masters Team, Sue Zihlmann, Terry Luzader, Sandy Draper 2nd Place Corporate Team, Chris Dedio, Fernando Gonzalez, Bob Morris 4th Place Mens Masters Team, Kevin Broady, Mark Donaldson, Evae Silva 5th Place Mens Masters Team, Danny Rosales, Chris Jaggers, Dave Parsel 5th Place Mens Open Team, Rob Cherry, Luis Palacios, Sam Blackmar Registration is open for the 2013 Carlsbad If you register by 4/30/12 with online code CB2013, you save $10, bringing the price down to $20! Now that is a bargain 5K. And don t forget to sign up for the team competition so the Snail s Pace can keep up the team winning streak. A big thanks to Dave Reynolds for providing hot breakfast for the runners. I had no idea so many people loved bacon after a run. 5
Double Marathon Weekend My First Double Marathon Weekend : Richmond VA, November 12, 2011 and Outer Banks NC, November 13, 2011 Written by Bridget O Callaghan-Hay While searching for a fall marathon I came across the Richmond Marathon in Virginia. Jon, my husband, was on board since in addition to me getting a marathon in another state, we could have an early Thanksgiving with his sisters, who lived in Virginia, and a chance to celebrate his aunt s 103rd birthday now that s endurance! Then I noticed that the Outer Banks Marathon which started in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina was scheduled the day following Richmond and the goal of finishing both marathons entered my head! We were familiar with both locations and had spent many summers doing the three hour drive between Richmond and Kitty Hawk on the way to family reunions. Also consider the bang for the travel dollars; 2 marathons in 2 states and a visit with family! Was I insane to set myself the goal of completing 2 marathons in 2 states in one weekend? I knew that Mike Larkin from our Fountain Valley chapter had completed several double marathons and even a few triples so I sought his advice on whether my goal was doable. Among his tips that I took to heart were: running should always be fun, make your first double fun, plan on taking at least minutes longer than usual to complete each marathon, start at the back of the pack and find a fun group to run with. To train for this adventure I started doing back to back long runs on the weekend, and trained 5 days a week at MaxBodyBootcamp I remembered those days where I d arrive at boot camp feeling exhausted after a run but still managed to finish the WOD (workout of the day) which often included100 pushups, squats, burpees, pull ups, core work etc. As the big weekend approached, I started to focus on the logistics of completing the 2 marathons. I placed my running gear into two separate jumbo storage bags labeled by event name, 2 other bags contained warm-up gear, and of course 2 pairs of shoes. I had one of my most organized carry-on bags. The part of the adventure I wasn t looking forward to was the 3 hour drive between Richmond and the Outer Banks. (continue on next page) 6
Double Marathon Weekend (continued from previous page) Richmond Marathon, Saturday 11/12/2011 Thursday night we checked in late to the Holiday Inn Express in downtown Richmond a great location for the race. Friday we stepped out to a cold wind and walked to the start line and checked out the finish line area. After stopping at the well-organized expo we met with my cheer squad Jon s sisters, Karen and Debra and niece Emily. At the expo excellent spectator material was provided and included detailed directions on how to get to each of the designated party zones. Three party zones were set up along the course with free food, and noisemakers for spectators. Saturday the temperature at the start line in historic downtown Richmond was 32 F. I was almost the last person to cross the start line. After running through some of the city s beautiful old neighborhoods, while traveling up Monument Avenue, past statues of Confederate soldiers, I caught up with the 5 hour pace group and planned to stay with them, The pace leader was an ultra runner and a great pace leader. Approaching the first party zone, I stopped for a few hugs from my cheer squad. Crossing the James River on the Huguenot Bridge brought back memories of earlier family trips when we went down the river rapids on floatation cushions. The fall foliage along the James River was amazing. After completing the second river crossing via the Lee Bridge we arrived at mile 16 and the first junk food station. It was well stocked with gummy bears, cookies, pretzels, and soda. I am now a fan of a gummy bear and pretzel mix for marathon fueling. I had to remind myself to fuel up and hydrate well during this run for my run the following day. The two wet-washcloth stations, at miles 17 and 23 were a nice touch but it was so cold I didn t use them. The last mile was downhill to the finish where there was plenty of post race goodies, including bagels, fruit, and pizza. With all the spectator support along the course and my own cheer squad, I failed to stay with the 5 hour group and crossed the finish line in 4:49 hoping I wouldn t suffer too much extra the next day. After stopping at Debra s house for an ice bath, and more food we began the long drive to the Outer Banks. I sat on tennis balls and a mini foam roll and massaged my legs and back with the stick throughout the drive. (continue on next page) Freezing at start line Halfway mark Mile 19 Finish line 7
Double Marathon Weekend (continued from previous page) Outer Banks Marathon, Sunday 11/13/2011 The Outer Banks was described as a point-to-point, mainly flat course with a start line in historic Kitty Hawk, home to the birth of aviation, with two hills (the first in Nags Head Woods Preserve around mile 12 and the second at mile 23), and the Washington-Baum Bridge (bridge stats:1.05 mi long, 82' high, with a 650' climb to the top at a 4% grade). We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn only a mile from the start line and right on the Atlantic Ocean wow only 2 months earlier I had run on the other side of the ocean in Co. Kerry, Ireland! Morning arrived fast and it was off to the start line of marathon 2. I ended up being the last person to cross the start line my legs were moving slowly. Just like in training by about mile 4, I was moving a bit better. I hung with the party crowd, many of them marathon maniacs and 50 state members. After several pleasant miles though communities along the bay, we arrived at mile 8 and ran the base of the famous Wright Brothers Monument, marking the location of the first flight that took place on December 17, Around mile 10, we entered the Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve. This maritime forest was amazing beautiful trail running, along a well-packed, soft dirt road. At about the 12.5 mile, the course went by the largest sand dune on the East Coast Jockey s Ridge State Park where we got views of hang gliders flying from the mountain of sand. Entering Nags Head, I got my first view of the Washington Baum Bridge and Roanoke Island. It was starting to get warm. At mile 13 now on the main highway I met my cheer squad, Jon, Debra and Emily. I was grateful for the gummy bears and pretzels. It was great seeing the cheer group about every 3 miles along the course. (continue on next page) Start line Nags Head, NC 8
Double Marathon Weekend (continued from previous page) About mile 18 we left the main highway and headed into a community on the Roanoke sound and past the houses where we stayed on family reunions. Back on the main highway just before heading over the Baum Bridge, I had one last stop with my cheer team. Now for the bridge I focused on enjoying the unbelievable view over the Roanoke Sound. Having conquered the bridge it was only a little over 2 miles to the finish line in downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island where the first English colonists settled in America in Passing the 25 mile marker I picked up the pace I was going to finish this run!! As I crossed the finish line in 5:43, I experienced another one of those rare moments in life when dreams and reality became one. It was an unbelievable experience! Tuesday we returned to Richmond and got to celebrate Debra s birthday. I was able to do a short jog with Lady a retired greyhound track star whom Debra had adopted. Then it was onto Roanoke and Blacksburg where we got to spend some time with Jon s 103 year old Aunt it was such an inspiration visiting with her seeing how full of life she is. Richmond lived up to its reputation of being America s Friendliest Marathon. The race directors catered to the runners and spectators. The Outer Banks course had some incredible scenery and went by some great historic sites. The pirate themed finish line festival was unique as well as the finisher medal which came with a detachable charm. With controlled pacing, right attitude and proper fueling two marathons can be completed on a weekend. Approaching The Bridge ~ Mile 21 Heading to the finish line Recovery jog with Lady 9
