Foot Traffic Flat Marathon Foot Traffic Flat Marathon Sauvie Island, Oregon, July 4th 2013 by Bridget O Callaghan-Hay If you are searching for a marathon in July then Foot Traffic Flat marathon ( which takes place on the Fourth of July would be a great choice. What a great way to celebrate the Independence Day a marathon, half marathon or a 5k in the morning followed by awesome firework displays throughout Portland! The race benefits the Sauvie Island Volunteer Fire Department. Sauvie Island, located about 10 miles NW of Portland, consists of rural farmland in the middle of where the Willamette River, the Columbia River and the Multnomah Channel off the Columbia River all converge. Since past race reviews indicated that traffic gets backed up getting onto the island (there is only one bridge onto the island located less than 2 miles from the start), the day before the marathon, we drove to the island to find the start line and reconnoiter the course. The event offers shuttle buses from NW Portland. 4
Foot Traffic Flat Marathon Our first stop was the race start and finish line at the Pumpkin Patch, a privately owned farmers market on the south end of the island. Driving around the island, I got a preview of some of the beautiful scenes I would get to see. I was glad to see that the course wasn t exactly flat. One race review noted that the name of "flat" may also be a pun on the "flats" of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. for which Sauvie Island is noted. 5
Foot Traffic Flat Marathon Race day came, and while I disliked getting up at 4:15 am to be ready to leave for the island before 5:00 am it was turned out to be a wise choice. There was plenty of parking at the start line, and we were parked by 5:30 am. It was only 50, and I was glad I brought some warm up gear. While the 90-degree plus temperatures of a few days prior had abated, there were still predictions of some warm temperatures for race day. Given the nature of the course, with little shade and open spaces, this would have been a problem had it not been there for the plentiful well stocked aid stations. As we ran the first 2 miles, a hundred or so cars and several bus shuttles, inched along in the opposite direction. Many runners for both the full and the half (which started 15 minutes after the full) could be seen running back three quarters of a mile to the start. If you are reading this and decide to run in 2014, either take the earliest shuttle bus or plan on being at the bridge onto the island at least an hour before the start time! 6
Foot Traffic Flat Marathon The first 5 miles were basically flat. Views along the course included fields of berries, wheat, cows and sheep grazing, dotted with farmsteads and u-pick stands. One lane of the island road was closed to vehicles so spectators couldn t drive out on the course of the island except on bicycle. This resulted in very few people cheering along the course. The only sounds I heard were feet hitting the pavement, the bleating of a large herd of sheep, and barking of dogs as we went by some farms a very peaceful run in the country. The next section of the course was an out and back up and down the Multnomah Channel where we many large river house-boats that looked like suburbia floating on the water. This section had some rolling hills that weren t flat, but a welcome break from a flat road. At about mile 13, I met Joy Bissen, who had travelled from Wisconsin to visit family and run the marathon. This was my first marathon since breaking my foot and going through rehab to take care of back and pinched nerve issues. Since I was running injured, my plan to get to the finish line was by using a Galloway run walk ratio of 3 mins run/45s walk. It turned out that Joy was also running while still recovering and following the same run walk ratio. She introduced me to her Gymboss (an interval timer) and we travelled the rest of the miles to the beeps of her Gymboss. This section of the course had few shaded spots apart from a half-mile stretch of trees a welcome break from the already hot day. 7
Foot Traffic Flat Marathon At about mile 16, we headed inland to cross the island. A quarter mile down the road was a detour - a 1.5 mile in-and-out and up a hill. At this point Joy and I began passing many of the runners who had gone by earlier. At one of our walk breaks another runner asked if it was okay to join our group. Joy and I were so engrossed in conversation, (the Gymboss beeps can be set loud so we never missed a beep!) that we hadn t realized that a group of runners were following our run/walk breaks. For several miles we led our little group. Around mile 21, Joy s calf cramped and she wanted to walk more so we took slightly longer breaks. Once we arrived at mile 23, we decided to complete the remainder without any walk breaks. The post-race festivities were very nice as each runner was given one strawberry shortcake and one free hotdog/veggie hotdog. I used one of the numerous available water hoses and showered myself with the cold water. Kiddie pools filled with ice and water were also available for people to soak their legs. Even though getting down into the ice bath was very difficult and getting out was even more challenging, the ice cold water felt so good on my legs and back. The people organizing/operating the race were super friendly. The locals who put up with the disruption of their quiet island life on the Fourth of July in the name of charity (the run raised over $40,000 for charities including their fire department) should be commended for their generosity both in time and patience. 8
