Monthly Meeting Minutes : J U LY S U M M E R M O N T H Barefoot running on unknown beach On July 17 th, President Rick Noer, VP Monet De Jesus, Treasurer Robert Mignosa, and Social Chair Sandy Draper were present. New Balance representative Monica brought some new running shoes for some members to try during the fun run. In an effort to attract more participation from members, Social Chair Sandy Draper conducted an online and in-house survey. Based on the survey, members prefer the club event to be held in Bolsa Chica State Beach on a Sunday morning on September 25th. For $5, organizers will provide all the food for the bonfire/party after the run. Everything will be finalized by the next officers meeting on July 20th. More details will be announced later. For the next four weeks, Tuesday Track workouts will be held at Balearic Park (off Adams and Mesa Verde/Placentia). Get to the OCC track by 6:15 PM and do a warm-up run to the park with the rest of the group (less than 2 miles) or be at the park by 6:30 PM. 3 Notes from the president: Summer is here and many of the club members are running a variety of races or preparing to run races. The Mud Run races have started and they look like that is a fun way to race a 5k or 10k. Some of you have shared some of the unique races or other events at the meetings and I hope others will share more race results and comments. If you would like to submit an article on you favorite race or training please do so. Also, it is time to consider new officers for the next year with elections coming up in the fall. I feel there are club members that have some leadership qualities and ideas to improve on what we do. So, please consider serving as an officer this coming year. Elsewhere in this issue is listed upcoming races you may be interested in attending. If you haven t come to a club race, club meeting, or other club activities, please come. 4 Snail's Pace Spirit Incentive Award For this month, Jennifer Monioz is the recipient with 150 points. However, Dave Parsel has the highest points with 230. Every club member can win and there is a new winner every month and year-long. Just go to the web site and register. Snail's Pace Spirit Incentive Program To Participate: You must be a current member of Snail s Pace Running Club and have your dues up to date. Regular club members, Racing Team members and Running Academy Graduates are all eligible to participate and win prizes. Login to and create an account and make sure you are located in your Chapter file (Fountain Valley) and the month you need to post your points. Points are accumulated on a monthly basis and all Chapter events should be posted to the month you participated in them. If you forget to enter your points for a particular month you may go back and enter them, but remember Spirit Points are tabulated on a monthly basis at the end of each month. This addition would only be counted for annual points. How to receive points: Showing up at a regularly scheduled club run 10 points Attending the monthly club meeting 20 points Participating in the monthly club race 20 points Additional Points for wearing the Club Uniform at races 10 points Carpooling to races with other participants (two or more people)-10 points Writing a newsletter article (and having it published) 20 points Hosting a club social event 30 points Attending a club social event 10 points Recruiting new members 10 points Volunteering at a local race 10 points Prior to each monthly meeting, the previous month s points will be tabulated and high scorer will receive at least a $20 ASP Store gift certificate and will be ineligible for 3 consecutive months for this certificate. At the end of the year the overall winner will be awarded with a $100 ASP Store gift certificate, a Free Membership Renewal and a Free Entry to any Club Race (limits apply) of their choice for the next year. All points should be entered no later than the 1st of each month to give the Social Chair time to calculate the winner. If you have any questions, please see you Board of Directors for clarification. 4

5 Bay to Breakers by Luigi Giovanni Güereca On 15 May 2011, the 100th running of the Bay to Breakers (Cross City Race formerly know as) took place in San Francisco, CA. Several other Snails from the three other chapters and I were part of the 55,000 registered participants. For those of you that are new to running Bay to Breakers is one of many races that take place every year in San Francisco. It was first ran in 1912 to promote civic pride and unity among those residing in the city. Back then it was known as the Cross City Race. It begins on the East Side of San Francisco (Bay) and ends on the West Side of San Francisco (Breakers). The race is about 7.3 miles in which the winner completed it in 34:36. Runners World, Competitor Magazine and countless other runner oriented publications have listed Bay to Breakers as a race for runners and non runners to partake in because its it's own unique event that cannot be matched. Over the years it has become not just a race but a Mardi Gras type event. Participants dress in themed costumes that makes Halloween look like a little girls tea party. One of the most notable costumes is the Pink Guerilla (look at my Bay to Breakers pictures on Facebook) lining up at the Start Line with the Elite Runners. This year Black Swan one of the most popular themed costumes. Secondly, pop culture costumes from the 80s were a smash hit. For another year Chicken Boy was dancing in front of his house dancing to the delight of the crowd and participants. Unfortunately, it being held in San Francisco some of the local nudist celebrities were out in full force. (continue on next page) 5

6 Bay to Breakers (continued from previous page) Since last fall, event organizers, San Francisco City Officials and neighborhood representatives put out a press release informing that Alcohol, floats or bandits would not be permitted and tolerated at the 100th Bay to Breakers. Alcohol was taken from participants but most were allowed to chug as much of the beverage as possible before it was confiscated and spilled on the floor. With law enforcement cracking down; people were still consuming alcoholic beverages. Some of us decided to mask the container our alcoholic beverage was in order to consume. The floats that have been an attraction during the race were prohibited from partaking. This decision was prompted by complaints by participants and residents according to event organizers. You can still YouTube it to see clips from past running. After the race Golden Gate Park and the surrounding area became swarmed with participants from the race. Some like myself were sporting the medal and bib to let people around know of what we had just done. When I would come across another finished we would ask each other how it went and congratulate one another. People working at the business and patrons of the business asked questions about the experience or would congratulate. One of the cool things about the Centennial running was the fact that the San Francisco Examiner printed a Bay to Breakers Special Edition with all the names of those participants to have finished. The idea of running the 100th Bay to Breakers was proposed to me by my good friendo Danny Palacios. When I was up there last year during the 2010 San Francisco Marathon in July. He told me all about the festivities by going on YouTube and showing me pictures that were posted online. I was convinced by what he told me and what I saw online. When we ran Bay to Breakers we were joined by Michael Suncin. He was playing a lot of good tunes. At the end of the race both Michael and I found a pink Sunday hat that we were rocking. I highly recommend all of you Friendos to run, jog or walk Bay to Breakers. It is one giant party that the residents have stamped it unique to San Francisco like Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and countless other landmarks. 6

7 LATC s Transportation Night! Robert at the Fountain Valley store has tickets for sale to a private party at Knott's Berry Farm. Private Party = No Lines! The event is on Friday night September 16, 2011 from 7PM to 1AM. Proceeds will be donated to charities by LA Transportation Club Tickets are $30.00 and the price includes free parking. Tickets will be sold at the upcoming club meetings or at the store. Call Robert for more information. Store # or cell # About LA Transportation Club: Over the years, the LATC has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various Charities, that include the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Habitat for Humanity-Orange County, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, City of Hope, Ronald McDonald House and Hillview Acres as well as offering Scholarships to the general membership (General application) & CSULB applicants (GLS-CITT Application) to hundreds of young people. The net proceeds from their annual Membership Directory also contributes to our philanthropic effort. 7

8 Coaching by Robert Mignosa Coach a charity group or any new runner/walker As some of you may know, I have been coaching charity groups for more than 10 years, taking many first-time runners and walkers and helping them finish their first half or full marathon. Our sport is the best because it is open to all: young and old, boy or girl, short or tall, and etc. Also anyone who finishes a half or full marathon gets a metal and usually feels great about themselves. For coaching Crohn s & Colitis Team Challenge, on July 17 th, I had a team of 41 participated in the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon with finishing times ranging from 1:52 to 4:37 and all felt excited and want to continue in our sport. The thing that made it extra special this year was that our honored hero for the race was Mike McCready, the lead guitarist of Pearl Jam who has Crohn's disease and spoke to the group at our pasta party the night before the race. He fundraised and also ran the race with us. The 300 plus participants from all around the US. raised over $1.2 million for research to find a cure that makes each one of these participants even more special. They are helping to change the quality of life for all that have the illness. We have all run in races that benefit some cause that makes you all special as well. I encourage you all if you get the chance to coach any group of runners or walkers. Do it and you will change their lives for the better. 8

14 Snails Cup Update by Bob Morris Below is the latest update to the Snail's Cup Series after tabulating the Surf City 4th of July 5K. Elaine Gronberg from the LH Chapter still retains a slim lead over Jose Figueroa (BR) and the rest of the pack. Our next Club race, the Pride of the Valley 5k on August 6th has a slight downhill finish (just the opposite of Surf City) so it will be interesting to see if this course improves everyone's finish times.
