6 THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE PAIN DOWN YOUR LEG Many runners have had this complaint before: Pain shooting down their buttocks and the back of their thigh, some have it going all the way down to their foot. It is called Sciatica. But what really is Sciatica? And why do sufferers have pain traveling down their hip and leg? To answer those questions, think of your nervous system like the electrical wiring in your car. The wires go somewhere and carry electric messages so things can work: wiring to the brake lights for example. Below is the wiring schematic for the Sciatic nerve. The Sciatic nerve is a really big nerve (about the width of my thumb). It starts in the low back. Major nerves come out of each level of your lower spine. They join (becoming the sciatic nerve) and travel down through your hip and thigh, dividing into two segments that continue down the leg to the foot. Here is why you have pain down your leg The nerves that come out of the back and make up the Sciatic nerve are commonly pinched by different structures. When the nerves are pinched, irritated and inflamed then the nerve doesn t work right, it short circuits. When this happens in a car s wiring to the brake lights, then the brake lights don t work right. When it happens to the Sciatic nerve, a person can feel sharp, shooting pain traveling down the hip into the thigh. They can also feel numbness or tingling and pain traveling down the course of the nerve. When you have Sciatica, you don t really have a problem in your thigh or hip (where the pain or other symptoms are). You have a problem where the nerve is being pinched or irritated. If you have pain in your hip or in the back of your thigh, it could be Sciatica. But it could also be an injury or problem directly in that area. Many patients come in and say they have Sciatica when they don t. First thing to do is figure out if you have Sciatica or not. There is a test you can do to find out. Check out this video ( to see an example of the test. Hope this helps you understand your problem a bit more. Dr. Raymond Bunch, D.C. 7 Staff Spotlight Eduardo Guapilla New Balance/South Coast Plaza Staff Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal? Anaheim, California, lived in sunny So Cal all my life. What got you started on running, when, where, etc.? A science teacher in sixth grade was putting together a team and I thought I had what it took to be part of it. I never stopped and always wanted to be a top finisher. What has been your favorite race and why? San Francisco Distance Carnival, the venue was unbelievably nice and the competition fierce. What is the coolest place you have gone for a run? Black Star Canyon, by mile 3 you are just going up and up. What are you training for now and how is it going? Currently training for an upcoming cross-country season and I am feeling fit. Do you have any races that interest you? College invitationals because I find the best competition. What are your current running goals? I have my eye set for the Titan Invitational this cross-country season. Goal is to run 25:30 in the 8k. What is your best running tip? Injury prevention and healthy eating, it goes a long way! Why do you run? It has become a lifestyle and I can t see myself not training to run fast or improve. Any other hobbies or interests? I do photography on my free time. I love hiking and exploring place I haven t been to. What do you like most about working at New Balance/South Coast Plaza? Everyone I work with is so friendly and I like helping people find comfortable shoes!

8 Ask Dr. Fartlek Some of you more veteran Snails might remember a newsletter column that ran in the Laguna Hills Snail s Tales from In the column, correspondent editor Dr. Fartlek would answer running related questions from members. Dr. Fartlek has been on hiatus, but recently reconnected with the club and is open for business. Below are some past highlights of the column to give you a taste of the doctor's expert advice. Questions for the next issue can be sent to: askdr.fartlek@gmail.com. And now, for your reading pleasure... Dear Dr. Fartlek: How can I lose weight when I have pizza and beer after I run? I.M. Fat Dear Fat: You did lose weight. You just found it again. Go for another run. Dear Dr. Fartlek: Why do my toenails turn black and hurt after long run? Black and Blue Down Under Dear Under: Has it occurred to you that your shoes are too small? Of course, it may have nothing to do with running in which case you need to consult a doctor with more medical expertise than I. In either case, keep your shoes on so the rest of us don t have to look at them. Dear Dr. Fartlek: I have been sick for 30 days. I need your help with remedies to get better. Running is suffering. Sick Runner Dear Sick: First of all, most people think we runners are sick to begin with. Second, have some chocolate. Dear Dr. Fartlek: What is the appropriate stretching exercise and after run routine for pain below the patella where the patellar tendon attaches to the tibial tuberosity? What are the differences between the symptoms of 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd degree tendonitis? Concerned Runner Dear Concerned: How can I worry about your pain after you ve given me such a headache? Dear Dr. Fartlek: How do you prevent running shorts creep? Wedgie Dear Wedgie: It depends on the cause for the creep. Perhaps you are purchasing the wrong size shorts, or keeping them long after the elastic has given up the ghost. In the meantime, find a friend to run behind you and tug on them every half mile or so.

9 Hash Run April 23, 2017 Pam-A-Lot Belasco It was a bright and sunny morning when 10 courageous, adventure seeking snails found themselves massing at Vista Park in Costa Mesa. Anxiety and anticipation ran high as the rules of the hash run were set forth and the run began. Down the street and into the wild they ran following the markers best as they can. On-on! they called out. On-back! they cried as the false trails were followed trying to find their way to the treasure a stash of a token beer and water. When, finally, in a clearing, the marking of the large BN was found, indicating the treasure was near. The treasure, finally discovered, was riotously looted. Stumbling back to the park, they celebrated by naming themselves the bravest of all. Root beer toasts flowed while chants of down-down were lifted on high. Feasting was enjoyed by all. As they parted to their own ways, oaths of Until next year were heard.
