4 Sitting is the New Smoking? Have you heard that saying recently? Unfortunately it s true. Researchers have found that prolonged sitting shortens your life, just like smoking does. Another startling conclusion was that even if someone was a runner or active otherwise, if they sat for prolonged periods at their job the stats didn t change. The list of negative effects to the body from a sedentary lifestyle can be eye opening. Weak Gluts and legs are one result. Prolonged sitting causes changes with the muscles themselves. With major muscle groups getting weaker, this can lead to other problems. Weight Gain is another negative change. Studies show that enzymes and other chemical changes happen very quickly as one is not moving for a while. These enzymes are directly related to fat metabolism. Anxiety and Depression were found to increase with people that sat a lot. Researchers have not been able to make a clear connection as to why, but they just know that statistically it is true. Increase risk of Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer. Studies show that prolonged sitting does increase ones risk for these dreaded diseases. Unfortunately they are all too common in our society, as it has become more sedentary over the years. Neck and Back pain and stiffness are common complaints and increase with sitting and not moving much. When one does forty or more hours of the sitting exercise weekly they truly do change their posture. The head comes forward, the upper back rounds out and the shoulders hinge forward as well. This poor postural position is hard on the neck, upper back and shoulders. People can suffer injury and pain from seemingly normal activity when they have this type of posture. Text Neck is a term given to some who have this posture and aggravate it by looking down at their device too much. As a runner, having poor posture translates to poor and inefficient form. It is also the basic underlying cause of many of the injuries and complaints that runners suffer from. What to do? The answer is simple. Motion. You need to move your body. Although walking and running are good cardio, they don t really move the body in all different directions. Incorporate various movements and exercises into your sitting workday. We call short injections of motion Micro Breaks. Contact me and I will send you some exercise suggestions. You need 1 minute of true movement for each ½ hour of sitting. Use an app to remind you during your busy day. One app I ve used is called Stand Up. Probably more important than what type of movement to do is that you are disciplined in taking the time each day to do something. Sitting is the New Smoking, okay, but we can deal with it so we can have our careers and still have good posture and good health. If you need some help. If you are in pain currently or are concerned about your posture then contact my office and let them know that you are from A Snail s Pace Running club. I will give you a specialized postural exam, with digitized photos, (at a special discounted price) and we will figure out if we can do something to help you. In the meantime Get Moving!! 9 Member Spotlight Larry Isaacs Mission Viejo Member Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal? Baltimore, MD. I moved to So Cal in What got you started on running, when, where, etc.? I started taking running seriously in 1990 after I finished my actuarial exams, and after I noticed I was having trouble keeping up with my kids, then 8 and 11. What has been your favorite race and why? The 2000 LA Marathon. It was my first marathon, it was in the pouring rain, and the course then ran by USC where my younger daughter and wife patiently waited in the rain for me to run by. What is the coolest place you have gone for a run? The NCR Trail north of Baltimore, particularly miles 4 through 12, right after, or better yet, during a light dusting of snow. What are you training for now and how is it going? Whatever the next half-marathon is that is close enough so that I can sleep in my own bed and don't have to get up before 5:00. Do you have any races that interest you? Any race in Oregon in homage to Steve Prefontaine who was born the same year I was. What are your current running goals? To maintain my speed and endurance as I move up in age group brackets. What is your best running tip? Increase the lengths of your long runs VERY VERY gradually. Why do you run? So that if all else fails I KNOW that I've accomplished something during the week. Any other hobbies or interests? Swimming, biking, reading, gardening, hiking, and playing with the grandchildren. Ain't retirement great? What do you like most about being a member of A Snail s Pace Running Club? The way we members mutually support each other.

24 Fountain Valley Chapter News Bob did it again! Our infamous FV President made his way to the Vashon-Maury Island Beach comber newspaper. The article in part reads: This year s ninth annual Vashon Island Ultrama rathon and Trail Run on Saturday, June 2 nd, is emblematic of not only trail running culture, but also the events magnetism for uniting friends and families. Another reason people are drawn to the events is to reconnect with friends, old and new. This year, 80-year-old Bob Norton will return from California to his birthplace to run the 50k (31 miles) for the fourth time and reconnect with his childhood friend David Church. We have known each other since we were about 4 years old, Norton said. Norton and Church both grew up in Ellisport and attended the old Burton Grade School by Judd Creek, with Norton s family moving to California in Church went on to graduate from Vashon High School in Norton stays with Church in Ellisport when he returns, and Church comes out to the finish line to cheer on his childhood friend. Many islanders have made the two runs, a 50 kilometer (31 miles) and 10 miler, an annual event, turning the day into a reunion with family and friends. There are also many off-islanders who return year after year, drawn by the fun attitude and vibe as well as the lure of the island s trails; about one-third of the runners are from Vashon, one-third from Seattle and one-third from other locations, this year from as far-off as Austria.
