1 Monthly Squadron meetings are held at 1900 on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, at the Nanaimo Yacht Club (except July and August). Any date changes will be announced. Articles for publication must be in the hands of the editor by the 15th of each month. What they need is volunteers to help take the recovered junk from the docks to the parking lot. I know that we are not the Yacht Club, but we must remember that they do help us out, allowing us to hold our meetings, run some classes for no rent and run our student cruises out of their facilities, so we must be good tenants and help them out when they need it. Once the cleanup has been done, there will be some food and beverages for the volunteers. Please remember that our pledge states "... to operate our boats in an environmentally friendly manner..." and this also includes what is under the boats, so come out and lend a hand. 3 VOLUME 51 ISSUE 8 PAGE 3 Commander s Comments continued from page 1 The courses are almost done and it's time to start planning on attending our Volunteer Appreciation Night and Awards Banquet. This year, we're doing something different. We are holding the dinner on April 27, 2013 at the ABC Family Restaurant on Mary Ellen Drive (across the street from Chapters). There will be no dance to help reduce the cost of the buffet dinner. Dinner tickets will be $20/person and must be purchased by Apr 20, I will have tickets available at the April 14th meeting, or call myself or Alexa Stochmal for tickets. We have been invited to participate at the Skipper's Marine Open House on May 3-5. This will be a great chance to promote Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons and also to offer Pleasure Craft Operator Card Challenge Exams. I will need volunteers to help set up, man and take down the booth. This is a great opportunity for us as we have been offered the space for no charge, and with the cancellation of the Floating Boat Show, our only chance to really put on a PR Event until next August. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on May 7, 2013 at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. Please note that this is one week earlier than our normal meetings as the Yacht Club is being used for the upcoming Provincial Elections on May 14. PLEASE MARK THIS CHANGE OF DATE IN YOUR CALENDARS! We will also be holding the Spring Boating Course Graduation at that time, so it will be a fun social evening as well. I promise that the AGM portion of the meeting will be short so we have more time for fun. Barb Hoffstrom Training Officer s Report The Bearings and Fixes exercise was held on Sunday March 9 with 16 Boating students being able to take advantage of the event. Everyone was also able to practice their knots this time, thanks to Richard Carignan and John Smith. We had a beautiful but very cold breezy day, so everyone was in a hurry to get to the Windward Pub to do the plotting, and partake of hot nourishment. Everyone mentioned what a good day it was, and marveled at all the volunteers coming out to help. So I add my thanks to all who came out to proctor without you this would not be possible. The Pirates Cove/Wakes Cove Student Cruise took place March 10. Although the day was overcast and got a bit chilly it did not rain on the parade! We had 22 students participate and, thanks to our Cruise Master Bob Hoffstrom s wonderfully organized efforts, all went very smoothly and the comments were all very positive. Again, thank you to all the proctors and skippers who made this day possible. The next event is the Big Splash on March 19 at Beban Pool. Peter Jonkers from Safer Oceans Systems will be doing the Cold Water Rescue and Man Overboard drill, along with other demos. Thank you to Bill Weller for organizing this event. We look forward to lots of members attending. I have recently heard from Robin Lines who is well on his way to recovery after his hip surgery. He has offered to hold a Weather course this fall depending on interest. If anyone is interested, please let me know at dangil@shaw.ca or Alexa Stochmal is back from her extended stay in Belize and is once again organizing VHF courses. Both Boating, and Boat and Engine Maintenance, courses are going well. Any students who need extra help are getting it, both from proctors in class, and outside of the class if needed. The Junior Navigator class is having lots of fun, although getting sights on the sun at an appropriate height and direction at this time of year is proving to be quite a challenge. Dana Giles
4 VOLUME 51 ISSUE 8 Treasurer's Report CHEQUING ACCT SAVINGS TOTAL February 28, 2013 year to date MAJOR RECEIPTS : MEMBERSHIP DUES CPS COURSES MEETINGS ETC LUBBER LINE ADVERTISING OTHER TOTAL MAJOR DISBURSEMENTS: COURSE MATERIALS CLASSROOM RENTAL EXAMINATION FEES DUES & CONTRIBUTIONS MEETINGS ETC TRAINING AIDS OTHER TOTAL Transferred from chequing to Savings John Smith VHF Officer s Report The Maritime Radio Course scheduled for March 30 is full. We plan to give the course on April 13 at Nanaimo Yacht Club and again on April 20 at Safer Ocean Systems. While the course on April 13 is primarily for yacht club members, it is also open to the public. We already have 4 students registered. Another 5 have registered for the April 20 class. We keep these classes small to allow time for practice in using a VHF Radio in a controlled setting. Is anyone interested in assisting with the class on April 13? It would be a huge help if you knew how to hook the computer up to the projector as I have no idea. You could instruct as much as you feel comfortable doing. Also required is good hearing for the oral portion of the course. You do not have to be an RE. This is your chance to help out your squadron without making any long-term commitment. We start at 0830 and should be finished by This could be a good time to brush up on your own knowledge prior to the coming boating season. Several of the students at the Big Splash last night were enthusiastic about taking the VHF Course which may necessitate another course in early May. You may also challenge the exam for $35.00 or purchase the materials, do home study and take the exam for $ Please contact me at or koraldanser@shaw.ca if either of these options interests you. PAGE 4 Past Commander s Report My report this month is an appeal to the membership of the Squadron to come out and participate in the running of the Squadron's business. Soon the Annual General Meeting will be upon us, and we will elect the new Bridge. As you are all aware, the Bridge is simply the executive of the Squadron and as such determines the day to day operation and conducts the actual work that we do to fulfill our mandate, that is to teach boating safety to those who wish to learn (and, eventually become Squadron members as you have all done. ) As we all know, 5% of any organization generally does 95% of the work involved, and such has been the case with us. The current Bridge is understaffed, and has done an incredible job of maintaining course and speed in the presence of adverse conditions. However, it is not acceptable that we ask those who have done so much at the Squadron, District and National level to maintain their current level of contribution. Thus, I would like each of you to reflect on your commitment to the very worthwhile cause of maintaining the high level of quality instruction that we have provided up to now, and further, how would your contribution help to make it even better. To be a bridge member does not entail 24/7 commitment (though that would be ok with me!!) but rather the taking on of responsibility for certain functions from time to time. We need assistance at all levels, so if you have skills such as secretarial, organizational, in public relations, or just like to talk to people about the Squadron, that would be fine. Note please that you would not be thrown into the deep end and expected to swim! The current Bridge consists of several dedicated officers who are always willing to advise and support those just taking on the required duties. On page 2 there is a list of the Bridge positions, many of which are vacant at the moment. If you are interested (and I hope that you are) please talk to me at or me at Bill.Weller@viu.ca about how you can help. Bill Weller Alexa Stochmal
